If you're looking for the kind of breakfast you could make yourself at home, this is your place. We ordered the breakfast sandwich (scrambled egg and bacon on toast), eggs and hash browns, and cinnamon roll French toast. All were lacking love and flavor. My 7 year old said the bacon needed salt. It's also a pet peeve of mine when they only serve a single grape jelly on your plate when you ask for jam. read more

Okay so the line to get in this joint can get long, but with good reason. Its delicious and reasonably priced. I ordered the loaded hash browns extra crispy. This dish hit me in the feels! I honestly got a smile at first bite. I was like "yep, thats the flavor I was hoping for." (My mouth is actually watering as I write this)....I could definitely have this again and again and again... As for my coffee, it was spot on. I forget the name of it (as I'm writing this days later) ...it may have been the Mexican mocha. All I remember was it was spot on. On of them coffees that was soo tasty I had to look in my cup in disbelief when I slurped the last drop.... If you are in the area and you see the line, don't worry just get in and thank me later. The people who represent your place will make the biggest difference in who will frequent it as a tourist visiting. My husband and I both ate here multiple times in the last few days while we were here. I just left after buying a double espresso shot and got back in line while I waited for that to buy one of the stationery cards you have in there. When my espresso was ready I realized I had forgotten to ask for it to go because we had just eaten across the street for lunch and my husband was still over there. I decided to grab espresso from yall and take my baby with me to support yall one last time before heading back to Texas today. When I super nicely said "oh my goodness I am SO sorry but could I actually get that to go?" I got the biggest attitude from the barista as she poured it into a to go cup. When I apologized again as she gave it to me, she ignored eye contact, said "it's fine..." in the rudest manner, and walked off. She was short, with brown, curly hair. I don't know if I'm just used to nice people in Texas and that not being the norm here, but that experience alone will make me never come back. It makes me sad, because the food was delicious, location awesome, etc. It has me leaving what was a great trip on a disappointing note. If you're looking for good food I give it 5 stars! My wife and I walked here from our rental one morning for breakfast. It has a decent selection and the prices were reasonable. Everything we got was pretty good. The workers were nice enough and the place was well maintained. My wife didn't love her coffee though which took a star off of my rating. read more

This place is exceptional! Listen folks, you won't be disappointed! Their birria burrito that they sell as a special is straight fire! I am a total mexican food snob, and their breakfast burrito is a heavy weight champ. My sons french toast was also awesome. My wife also loved her salad. You killed it OC! We aren't familiar with Mission Bay and wanted breakfast burritos from somewhere that wasn't extremely packed. This came up and we were very pleased to find it! Practically a walk up location to the beach, so we ordered takeout at the counter, waited about 30 minutes and took it down to the beach. Unfortunately their online ordering system was down. Really good breakfast burrito and quesadilla. Comes with avocado, bacon, cheddar and hash browns. Lots of eggs and not filled with potatoes like most places these days. We loved the salsa too. Definitely 5 stars and 10/10 recommend this place. The food was fresh and amazing. The ambience is close to the beach and very casual. Not too busy when we were there which was nice. We had the cinnamon roll French toast and breakfast quesadilla. Also ordered an açaí bowl which was really tasty. AHHHMAZING! Service was good and they were friendly. Always see this place when dining at other establishments so thought we'd drop in for breakfast. They have an interesting system. You have to order and pay for your food. Seating is first come first serve. Since they don't know who you are ( just by name) when your food is ready they are calling your name out loud searching to bring your food. It makes it a bit difficult for the server as they are searching for you and calling your name out loud instead of using a number placard to help them locate you. Anyway, I think they are known for their pastries. Tried the pumpkin scone and chocolate chip cookie while waiting for the breakfast entrees' The pumpkin scone was AMAZING! Definitely the highlight of the meal! It was flavorful could taste the spice and nutmeg in it and the texture was crumbly on the outside and soft on the inside! Wow!!! Perfect! The chocolate cookie was average. Literally the best meal of our Spring Break Trip. Our airbnb was about a 5 minute walk - and I am so glad we decided to pop into Olive on our last day. The ladies working were SO friendly and accepted our custom orders very kindly. We ordered a scramble, a fruit cup, and a chicken sandwich. It was ALL great food and a great atmosphere. Lots of cute seating and a great people watching spot. The variety of menu items was really refreshing to see and the fruit bowl was actually worth the $5! If I had to pick between my favorite pancake recipe and this cute little breakfast spot in Mission Beach, I'd choose the latter. Why? Two words - Claire and Pancakes! My taste buds are still doing a happy dance thinking about the Scones I had yesterday. Claire recommended them, and boy, was she right! It was like she knew my palate better than I did. I love this place!! I've been coming here since college so it's a classic spot for me. They have amazing latte flavors (my personal favorite is banana bread) and a great selection of breakfast foods. My go to is always the soy chorizo burrito, and the salsa is always amazing. They staff is friendly, the food comes out relatively quickly, and you can't beat the patio location right across from the beachfront. read more

History

Established in 2005.

Growing up in upstate New York, I used to spend many hours at my community deli not far from my house. Everyone would gather in the mornings for their coffee chit chatting about what was happening in the neighborhood. These fond memories are what I have based my dream on. I wanted to own my own cafe in my new home of San Diego. While attending USD, I enjoyed living in Mission Beach, so it was here that I started looking. When I walked into the Olive Cafe, saw the fireplace and felt the cozy atmosphere, I knew I had found the right place. With a little help from friends and family, I was able to begin making my dream come true. I want the Olive to be a welcoming place where guests can sip coffee out of their very own mugs, munch on some of Dad's Favorite Pancakes, or play games while sharing a warm scone. My mission is to serve fresh, quality home cooked food as quickly as possible. I want you to know I truly believe that it is not just my cafe. It also belongs to those who visit.

I will preface this review with the acknowledgment that this is the epitome of first world…read moreproblems. I actually love this place (I could have sworn I had reviewed positively before). I'm just extremely disappointed with how poor my experience was today because I had only super positive experiences previously and was looking forward to dining there this morning after sometime away, but holy hell ....today's experience has been so profoundly bad. Firstly, my husband ordered two breakfast burritos - one with bacon and the other with bacon on the side. I'll chalk this one up to miscommunication, but they put bacon in one, and bacon in the other too - and then added bacon on the side to the other and charged us $5.50 for the extra bacon. Again, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here and will be sure to communicate explicitly next time. They kindly made me a new one, but the new one had potatoes that weren't cooked thoroughly (likely to rush the food to me, so I acknowledge the difficulty here), however there was hardly any avocado. I literally had to complain again because I didn't believe there was any avocado at all. I wouldn't be as pissed if this weren't an EIGHTEEN DOLLAR breakfast burrito. Lastly, the coffee lids don't fit on the cups. We tried to put one on and ended up spilling the entire coffee. I chalked this up to an accident on our part, however another patron who observed our incident said "their lids don't fit the cup, right??" And I was like "oh so it wasn't just us??" And she was like "no, I almost spilled mine all over too." This random patron encouraged us to ask for a new cup of coffee as a result (thanks, random patron!). The Molly's team did kindly make us a new (albeit quite bitter) drink, which I appreciate. However, the lid was still an issue - it would spill out of the cup all over the rim between the cup and the lid when I'd try to take a sip, so I took off the lid entirely, but then was stuck with dealing with spills while walking around - I had to move at a snail's pace to prevent spills altogether. This was easier to deal with random leakage around the entire cup every time I'd sip with the lid on. Ultimately It was just a lose-lose with the ill fitting lid situation. All this to say - Molly's Team, yall were fantastic just a month ago. What happened? I understand food and services in the beach area stuff are often expensive and rarely good, but you guys are *too* expensive for this poor of service and quality. Two stars because at least the folks there are generally nice.

I think this just makes the experience more special-- having to slow down and savor a dining experience instead of rushing from place to place is truly a treat. Although not always speedy necessarily, I've had amazing service every time I've visited here. On one occasion we had longer wait times for our food and were treated with a delicious cake at the end of our meal. On another, we had a very minor snafu happen where a server was adjusting an umbrella and accidentally knocked something over on the table next to us-- the staff comped all of our meals out of consideration which was just so generous and understanding. I was interested in their coffee menu, since they seemed to take craft in some of their creations. I enjoyed their Strawberry Cold Brew. It was light and sweet from the foam on top and had a nice balance of brew and strawberry flavor. For food, we kept it all veggie with their Black Bean Tacos and a Superfood bowl. It wasn't our first choice, though, as all of our selections were sold out for the afternoon. The food was bright and colorful, but did take a little longer to prepare. My bowl had plenty of red bell peppers and onions, which I did eventually get tired of eating. I loved the crispy kale and wish they included more of it or some seeds on top for more crunch! That day they were out of stock on everything we wanted, so I will have to give it another go if I ever get the chance to revisit. Overall, the service was very kind from the ladies and the coffee is notable!
