We had a great experience at Olympia Cafe! Our waitress was prompt, attentive, and very friendly. We started out with their delicious hummus plate. The pita was warm and fluffy and the hummus was very tasty. Our waitress also brought a basket of bread to our table that was very good too! I ordered the gyro dinner and my husband ordered the chicken kebab dinner, both were fantastic!!! I highly recommend eating here. read more

Who knew. Have walked by Olympia Cafe so often when visiting Savannah; no idea it was a top notch purveyor of Greek cuisine. Saw a scroll on Savannah news announcing the Trip Advisor had listed Olympia Cafe, savannah among its to 10% restaurant in the WORLD. Had to try. From our getaway on Hilton Head Island, we planned a day trip to Savannah to include a visit to Olympia Cafe. WOW! We love Greek food and Olympia Cafe produces an exceptional version. Server said Olympia is known for seafood done in Greek fashion. The Grouper Saute bore out her suggestion, a perfect combination of panfried grouper nuggets, lemon potatoes, leeks and seasonings. Yummy, Wife opted for Souvlaki; so often tough and dry but at Olympia tender morsels of pork tenderloin beautifully seasoned, with rice pilaf. Starters of Calamari and Mussels were in keeping with the quality of the meal. When walking down Water Street, dont pass Olympia Cafe by. Pretty casual at midday, looked like getting somewhat dressier for dinner. read more

I've Lived in Savannah for 16 years now, seen and tried it all.. This place is still one of my favorites. They always treat us like family here.. And we will always return. Saganaki Mediterranean Pepper Red Snapper Shrimp Aegean Grouper Sautee' Lamb Chops Potatoes and Peas with a Lemon Sauce, amazing. It's all prepared excellently, and with Love. Order some fruit and Baklava for dessert!! I could go on and on.. People from all over the globe return once they've eaten here.. It's a great place, with great food, and a great staff, If you have a problem, ask to see Nick, or Vasili and they will make sure you are Happy. Don't let the touristy location fool you, It's a great local restaurant. Opa!!! read more

Authentic Greek Cuisine. The Snapper for 2 was as wonderful as we remembered from a year ago when we last visited Savannah. It's a small place and if you don't look for it you'll miss it. The best part of this restaurant was the waiter. He was so attentive and well mannered. The food is just so so for greek food. Gyro meat was dry. Hummus doesn't have much flavor. Shrimp Aagean had good flavor was best food option that we picked. We were seated at table outside per our request, but the table was soooo slanted the tomato sauce kept leaking out of bowl due to table. They should not having people sitting at that table read more

I really wanted to like this place. I ignored all the reviews about how overpriced and overrated this restaurant was, but I really wanted Greek food. Sigh. Wish I had listened. The reviews are spot on. You just don't get what you pay for. I ordered the combo plate with Mousakka and Dolmades. The flavors were there, but the food was close to room temp. The lemon potatoes everyone was raving about were just ok. I was shocked at the portion sizes for a Greek restaurant. For the price I was expected to have a second meal (which is typical at the Greek restaurants in my area). I have an extra star because the hostess there was just lovely and sweet. Hmm.. I really like greek food, and we stopped by here while waiting for our ferry. We grabbed our 2 gyros to go and when we got back to our hotel room, scarfed them down. SO thinks that they would have been much better had we gotten to eat them there, but I was a little put off. I mean, it's MUCH better than the crap that Great Wraps will offer you, but was it so mouthwatering great that I dreamt about it? Nope. Was the taste enough to have me go back for more? Nope again. It was ok, nothing to rave about other than the fact that this is the only greek place on River Street. i've had better at Cafe Agora in Buckhead. read more

On a budget, or are you just a cheap bastard like me? Gyros are good, but the way to go is order a Greek Trio with Spanikopita, Mousaka, and Dolmades, grab the Calamari Appetizer, and share it with a date. 3.7/5 so I'm rounding it up. I stopped on a late Thursday morning for lunch. The place was calm and welcoming, with plenty of seating to choose from inside. There's a few tables outside but apparently those get snatched pretty quick since the place sits right in the corner of a busy area in front of the river. The outdoor seating seems great for boat and people watching or enjoying the lovely weather, but I digress; I sat inside. I ordered the salmon and salad special of the day (forget the exact name). The blackened salmon was perfectly cooked and a decently-sized portion. The flavors of the fish went well with the salad but tbh, the presentation was lacking. It was regular iceberg lettuce tossed in dressing and shredded cheese. The plate just didn't look as appetizing as I had imagined. Nonetheless, I was pleasantly surprised that it was so good. As for price, it's a bit more than I'm used to paying but for the location it seems about right. I hope to be back for the fish and chips! read more

The worst dinning experience of my life. I went there last night to try their lamb shank, because of my love of lamb. The lamb was so bad, and I know for a fact that they served me at least 10 days old already prepared shank. After having couple of bites, I was literally sick, and started to throw up. It is already 14 hours afterward, and I am still sick. read more

There are 2 sides to this restaurant. If you are looking at the restaurant, the right side offers sit down service and the left side is more for quick and/or take away service. We ordered the fish and chips and the falafel wrap. The fish is the standard tilapia and the fries are crinkle cut. The fish was tasty and a little spicy. The guy at the counter gave me a mesquite sauce for the fish as well as balsamic vinegar. Very good and filling. The fries were nicely seasoned with salt. As for the falafel wrap, it was full of lettuce and tomatoes with a tahini sauce. Super filling and tasty. As we were sitting, the cook/cashier/waiter called me up to hand me a deep fried fish which was incredible. I cannot remember what it was but it was delicious! This place was really great! As many times as I've passed it, I've been missing out! By the way, the dine in side is a little more expensive for the same food. And all the food is prepared in one location, so if you are looking to save a few dollars, go to the left side! There are 5 tables and 2 bar sections with stools. Yes, they do serve alcoholic beverages (a full bar) as well as sodas. They do have a coffee menu. Definitely a must if you want Mediterranean quick or a quick slice of pizza. This was recommended by the wonderful SCAD architecture professor who took us on a tour of the waterfront, so we went immediately. It's not too bad, with some unusual things on their antipasto plate, but seemed really overpriced. My date had the Gyro Plate, and said that it was pretty much like every other Gyro on the planet. I had the Souvlaki, which, while tender, had a flavor that was easily lost in the tzaziki sauce. I'm spoiled by Milto's souvlaki in Austin. Dolmas, on the other hand, were fresh, flavorful, and obviously homemade (so many places just dredge them out of an oily tin). Dinner for two with an appetizer and a couple of beers got up to almost $50 - understandle possibly from the location and tourist clientele, but this far costs me $24 in Austin. read more

Anyone who knows me well knows that I think that the food (in general) in Savannah has a lot to be desired. Generally speaking, the diners have about as much class and staying power as a rhinestone g-string and have the palate of an aguesiac thus not giving any of the restaurants incentive to cook good food. This is especially true of those restaurants located on the Savannah Riverfront on River Street, the same street that Olympia Cafe sits on. But, in this case, there is an exception. I have read many of the reviews below and tend to agree with parts of all of them. I think that Jane D says it well when she states that the food is "mediocre at best" (and you are now asking, how is he giving this place 4 stars after a statement like that?), but there is an exception, and that exception lies in the owner Vasilis Varlagas and his big personality and his brilliance with whole fish. I have eaten here now a handful of times and every time we go we order, in advance, the whole red snapper. Vasilis ensures that it is fresh for that day and prepares it very simply but with the care a mother gives her newborn. The fish is amazingly moist, flavorful and delicate. It is prepared in the oven, whole and comes to the table that way for all to gaze upon with awe before Vasilis himself comes out to fillet and plate. With the fish comes some very traditional sides of lemon potatoes, rice with peas and a very Greek version of a ratatouille (complete with feta cheese). Every morsel is simply delectable. This follows all the way through the meal commencing with the saganaki and red roasted pepper with goat cheese, followed closely by a Greek and Greek Village salad and ending with fresh fruit, baklava and Greek yogurt with honey. He even throws in an ouzo to boot! Everything about the meal and about Vasilis's hospitality is memorable. With all that said, going back to Jane D's quote (but I cannot endorse the "sucks" part of that quote), I have eaten here prior to discovering the fish and really found the other dishes about mediocre. There are some winners on the menu for sure, but they are few and far between. But what is a winner every single time is the whole red snapper. When I am in Savannah again, which is a regular occurrence, I will certainly keep Vasilis and the Olympia Cafe in the rotation especially if I "make the call" a day in advance to ensure that beautiful fish will be waiting for me on my next visit. Try it, you will not be disappointed! read more

This was my 3rd visit to Olympia's Express cafe. The gyro and apple pie are to die for! Excellent fresh food, hot, and speedy - when I am on the road, that is what I expect. Foods sampled - gyro wrap, spaghetti & meatballs, baklava, pina colada - all were great. There is a restaurant adjacent to the Express cafe for those who want a more relaxed, dress up, etc. experience - but for me the cafe is perfect. Daniel behind the counter sets the climate with friendly fast service. If you find yourself strolling River Street, stop in for a quick break. Take the water taxi over to the Westin for a quick drink, then be sure to peruse the shops. read more

Since this is Savannah we ordered the fresh fish and were not disappointed. Grilled Red Snapper - perfection, and grilled Flounder - darn good. The Greek influence in the sides of rice, peas, lemon was great. I substituted grilled veggies for my lemon potatoes and was not disappointed. Had the Greek wine Moschofilero, it was a delight with good acidity, dryness and spice. Erin, the waitress, was the best. We waited not more than 7 minutes for table when everywhere else was an hour wait. Noise level was conversational. Linen tablecloths and candles gave it the romantic ambiance we appreciated! read more

We decided to check this place out after several recommendations. Our mind was set on sharing an appetizer to start but seeing the portions of the entrees of people around us, we decided not to. We had the lamb shank and the gyro dinner. Both were excellent ! Truly tasted authentic and the portions were big. The only disappointment was the bread basket. We were expecting some sort of garlic bread but they served a dried out baguette. Apart from that, it was great. Will return for sure. read more

Strange to think that we could have our best meal in Savannah at a Greek restaurant but it's true. The service was terrific and so was the food. I must recommend the Saganaki (greek flaming cheese) and Calamari. I also recommend the Souvlaki chicken kabob. The location is right down on the river. We didn't save room for the ice cream from their parlor but I hear it's terrific. read more

Where to start...Updated n arriving to this spot, the hostess or owner (not sure which one) is frantic and creating a wait list for people trying to walk in. We made a reservation so after 30 minutes or so of the hostess's behavior my anxiety was through the roof. The food was sub-par. The Saganaki is torched with way too much alcohol so when its put out you are left with burnt cheese. I have never had bad Saganiki even in dive greek restaurants, this one sucked. The tzatziki was watery. I had the greek salad with chicken which was nasty, my partner had the souvlaki platter, equally nasty. Its a hard pass for our next trip. Do not recommend! read more

This place was great!! Food: We ordered the grilled octopus which was sooo good. The soft shell crab was a special that night and it was the best we've had. The hummus was house made and was a good sized portion and we really enjoyed. The saganaki was very good too. We had two salads for our entree. The Greek salad with gyro meat was so good, a very large salad with lots of meat, had enough left over for lunch the next day. Also ordered the Olympic salad which was very good as well. I definitely would recommend each item we ordered. Jamie was our waitress and she was sooo awesome! Since it was our first time visiting, she ordered the saganaki on the house. She also took the initiative of switching my second glass of wine to a similar Greek wine, which I did enjoy more, so that was great! I definitely recommend this restaurant to all and suggest asking for Jamie, she was so great and went over the top to make our experience so great. read more

I was very excited to try the pastisio but found it kind of dry. My husband liked his gyro. Service was ok but honestly I wasn't blown away by anything. It may be a bit nitpicky but I didn't like having my drink served to me with a straw already in it, completely out if the wrapper ( sometimes they leave some of it on the top) and also I would have never asked for a straw in the first place. read more

We were served super quickly and the staff behind the counter was very friendly. I've had gyros all over: NYC, LA, San Fran, Florida, DC, Baltimore. The one here was one of my favorites! Be aware, like another user commented, that there are two sides: the Olympia Cafe and Olympia Express. The cafe has a bigger storefront and more presence. We took the advice and visited the Express side and we were not disappointed. Food was great and you seat yourself. This is a really great place to eat at and the atmosphere and staff are wonderful. We were both tired and hungry and agreed to try The Olympia Café and we were not disappointed on bit. We will have to come back several times to just sample the large menu. Our first time we decided to try The Olympic Café Trio where you get to pick 3 of your favorite Greek dishes to make a complete dinner. I had Dolmades = stuffed Grape Leaves and Pastitsio = Greek Lasagna and Spanakotriopita = philo dough crust with spinach, cheese, herbs in a pie My wife had to Dou and Picked Greek Lasagna and the Spinach Cheese Pie Both meals were great and it came with a 1/2 loaf of fresh bread and a large side salad with Kalamata olives (yes they have pits) Everything here was great and we would go back again as soon as we vacation in Savannah again. read more
