Cheap, fresh, pleasant. Serves beer and wine. I'm addicted to the white tuna sashimi. The spicy tuna handroll was a favourite of Jim's. Then the miscellaneous rolls from the $3 menu we'd order to fill ourselves up. 30? 40x we've been here? Had take out or delivery at least as many times. Prompt service, super cheap, yum yum yum. There are a lot to say about this place as it gives an extensive range of dishes and sushi. The sushi were alright, I would not say it was the best I ever had but it definitely was not bad in a sense. The menu is ridiculous as it can be with the names of the sushi. I mean things like Spider Roll and Dragon Roll is what you expect; they do offer those but they also offer M16 Roll, Ak47 Roll, BMW Roll, iPhone Roll, and etc. Things you would not even think of they probably have it as a sushi. The price is reasonable for such a place as most of the sushi is like 3$ and the special roll are buy one get one free which really gives u choices. I went here on multiple occasions because of my friends and since it was close to where they live and they love sushi. I am not the biggest sushi fan but this place has its ups and downs. The price is definitely reasonable and you won't leave with a hole in your wallet unless u go crazy on the sushi then thats just your fault. The problems that lies within this place is the sushi itself, people have different taste so some people may like it a lot while others think they try better ones. All in all, its not a bad place for sushi and if you are kind of not a big spender, then I would recommend checking this place out at least once. 3.5 Stars - it's not out-of-the-world sushi but I was AMAZED after eating sushi in the city to find how cheap Omiya is. Buy-one-get-one-free specialty rolls and $3 rolls? I'm sold. This is your ordinary neighborhood sushi restaurant. The service is inconsistent, even though it's the same people all the time; sometimes they're attentive, sometimes they're not, but for the most part, they're pretty good about it. Their spicy salmon is a sure win and so is their spicy shrimp roll. I used to get their spicy cooked scallop regularly but I find that recently, they've been skimping on the scallop, and putting more crunchy stuff, which makes it overwhelmingly dry. The ginza roll is good too. I don't usually order from the specialty rolls menu - there's so much to choose from, I can never decide what to pick, but the ocean king roll and the spider roll are solid choices. Their rock shrimp appetizer is to die for. If you've got a hankering for for somethig other than sushi, or might want something with your sushi, GET THIS. Omiya seems to have a lot of 20-something customers on casual dates, and a fair number of guys recovering after a workout at the gym across the street. I've been to lots of Japanese restaurants but nothing compares to the freshness of Omiya sushi and the prices are unbelievable! The specialty rolls are buy 1 get 1 free, the hand rolls or cut rolls for $3 or so and the services is great! I was at Blue Ribbon Sushi in Park Slope not long ago, spent double of what I would at Omiya and the food was not what I expected. Why spend more in awful nasty raw fish when you could have it fresh and for less? My family and friends love this place. I've been here twice for lunch, and both times we got the bento boxes. The various boxes all come with a miso soup or salad, california roll, 1 tempura shrimp & a couple of tempura veggies, 2 fried dumplings, & white rice. (substituting brown rice costs $1. extra). The first time I came, I got the ginger pork, which was quite good. The second time, I ordered the ton katsu, which sadly was overcooked, had too much breading, & was a bit tough & leathery. We also ordered the beef teriyaki, which was fine. Overall, I'd say this is really standard Japanese food - it's all right, and the lunch bento is plenty of food for $10, but nothing is particularly innovative or exceptional. It's too bad the restaurant has dropped out of the restaurant.com program (they used to participate), because that would make it a better deal for dinner. The pieces of fish were an acceptable size. The rice while certainly not the best sushi rice I've ever had was fine. I guess I wish the inari was a pouch and not served like sushi, but no matter. Shobu was closed so we gave this place a try. It was beyond disgusting. The Chicken Katsu and Vegetable Tempura were inedible... and the oil they used to cook in was so old, our food tasted like everything the restaurant fried in it before. The cook uses a thick batter instead of panko crumbs so the food was also super heavy and grease soaked, I had to blot the vegetables with several paper towels before even tasting them. The white rice was a congealed, mushy mass. My daughter said her Chicken Teriyaki was awful as well. It was as though the cook had never made japanese food before, which is supposed to be light and delicate. We threw out $45 of food after a few forced bites. Our hamster ate the carrots off of the salad though. Next time Shobu is closed we'll eat cereal. Save your money, do not order from this awful place. read more

Omiya is a go-to spot for quick and cheap sushi. Overall, their rolls are tasty and they're not flimsy with the portions. I also love their spicy salmon salad - they're generous with the salmon. They have a ton of sushi options on the menu, and their special rolls are buy 1 get 1 free. However, there are many other sushi places in the area with much fresher-tasting sushi. They also get the order wrong on occasion, and lately their deliveries have taken way too long (about an hour). In the years I've been eating here, I once got a bone in my sushi and I once got an inedible smoked salmon roll. Other than that, they're pretty consistent in terms of quality, and I have yet to find a place with more affordable sushi. read more

I'm utterly disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. My friend and I decided to eat lunch at Omiya. We pointed to the lunch special and order Chicken Katsu and Chicken Teriyaki. We were served miso soup first and waited for about thirty minutes before our actual meal came. The food was mediocre. Already short on time, we quickly finished our meals and asked for the bill. When we saw the numbers, we were astonished that the meals cost TWICE as much as indicated on the lunch menu. We questioned one of the waiters and their reply was, "You have to tell our waiter that you want the lunch menu." Although we had clearly indicated we wanted the lunch special, we just paid and left since we were short on time. The food was definitely not worth the price we paid. A word of advice: When you're ordering the lunch special from them, make sure you say it nice and slow. Apparently, pointing to the lunch menu and coming in during the lunch time isn't obvious enough. Already annoyed with the outrageous pricing and the service, we left small tips on the table, which they failed to see. We brought our bill over to the counter and waited for our change. The cashier was hesitant and yelled over to the waiter clearing our table and asked if we left any tips on the table. If we had not left tips on the table, we would have not gotten our change. Here's another typical Asian restaurant that will chase after you for tips. We won't be coming back to this place and wouldn't recommend it. read more

The prices have gone up a bit lately but it's still good compared with many sushi restaurants nearby. I recommend the buy one get one rolls (Sakura, Ichiban, Bagel, Volcano rolls). They seem to cost more but the rolls are larger and will get you stuffed. They also have buy one get one appetizers (I love the tuna/salmon cracker and white tuna) if you dine in. Making this short and uncut....ordered FRIED rice with chicken. I got over cooked WHITE rice with chicken that tasted boiled and look undercooked...(how the hell that happened? This place is really nice on the inside if you don't consider the outside of this place. The decor is really nice too, It gives it a nice vibe to it. Price was reasonable, a basic roll is only about $3 and the specialty rolls only about 8 or 9 dollars which are buy one get one free. This establishment is really clean not a single thing on the floor and the tables have no streak from food. The servers always talks to me with a smile which is really nice and check on how i was doing in a reasonable amount of time. I would definitely come back again. Prices were reasonable here and the regular sushi rolls were cheaper than the other restaurants closer to my house. A good meal can be covered with less than $10 per person. The seating is pretty comfortable. The rolls were pretty good. Three other friends and I ordered fried ice cream, but it didn't turn out to be as great as we had hoped it'd be. The serving was pretty small for ice cream that was priced at $4 on the menu. Other than that, the service was okay. They brought every thing quick and fast. I went with a friend who had heard they have great cheap sushi, so we trekked down to 86th Street and it was conveniently located across from the subway. The place was very busy and only had 2 waiters working. We were rushed to our table. I agree the menu is huge and the prices are cheap. We got about 4 pieces of sashimi, 2 hand rolls and 2 specialty rolls. They weren't bad, just ok. I also agree the poor selection of R & B was annoying. I used to eat at Omiya all the time when I first moved to Brooklyn. The prices are great and you can get a ton of food without spending a lot. Their special rolls are buy one get one free, which rocks for sushi and some of them are quite good. Unfortunately the more frequently I went the more I noticed the taste of the sushi was off. I *love* sushi but if it isn't super fresh it just isn't that good, and Omiya doesn't always have the freshest stuff. I haven't been back in a very long time.
