Open City is a solid choice every time. If you want to spend time in Rock Creek Park, stopping here before or after is the move. No matter what, be sure to take in the view from the Calvert Street bridge, which is only one block away. Street parking isn't too hard to come by if you're willing to walk a couple blocks. The Woodley Park metro is on the same block. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating. Great for grabbing coffee and a snack at their coffee/bakery bar, or sitting down for a meal and drinks. I highly recommend doing breakfast here, and everyone I know (myself included) swears by the hash brown bowl. read more

Welllllll...... This wasnt our first visit to Open City. Our first few visits were about ten years ago, and obviously much better. We were excited to take family for mother's day. Our server, while kind, was extremely inexperienced. She did not know the menu and insisted the lemon salad dressing was balsamic and brought us the same wrong dressing twice-and charged us for it, um what? The arugula salad description was off, since they literally brought us a bowl of arugula with nothing else, not a crumb of a crouton or a piece of an onion, tomato or cucumber. Zero. Our bloody mary did not have a single garnish. What?? Man, it was just not a good experience and we all left kind of disappointed. I will say the man bussing tables was busy and he found time to come and clear our table-he kicked a##. The pandemic has taken it's toll on many restaurants, and it appears Open City is experiencing some growing pains right now. I hope it gets back to normal soon, because we really enjoyed our first few visits. read more

I've always loved this place and have been going there since it opened many years ago. The food is great; the vibe is great; the location is great. It's a great spot. This morning, I dropped in unannounced with a sporadically arriving group that eventually swelled to 18. The manager, Yasmin, and her staff made room for us, accommodated all the hassles that come with an extra large group, took pictures for us, and just generally helped us enjoy the celebratory breakfast for which we had gathered. Outstanding service! Came here for an iced vanilla latte with almond milk that was superb. My son wanted a chocolate chocolate muffin. They didn't have any at the moment but the man taking my order ran into the back and was able to get one for him. They filled up our waters. We were all set for the zoo. Sat at the bar with my wife. The service was fair. In fairness, it looked like they might have been shorthanded and folks might have been doing more than one job. Some constructive criticism. I enjoyed the blackened chicken with beans and potatoes. The chicken was very good and fell off the bone. The beans had a nice char. There could have been fewer potatoes and they soaked up all of the juice. A few of the pieces of the chicken could have used some juice. Not overly fancy, but very comfortable. Our waiter, Spencer, made us feel very welcome & took great care of us. My dining partner had the salmon dinner. It was a very generous portion of fish that was perfectly prepared. Instead of the quinoa that typically comes with it, Spencer was happy to swap that for garlic mashed potatoes, which was also a large portion. It came with freshly steamed broccoli. All was very good. I went with the grilled cheese with tomato basil soup. I have never, ever thought anything could be served with too much cheese, but I honestly could not eat all of the delicious cheese. The sandwich was on a brioche bread and expertly grilled to perfection. The location is ideal for anyone staying at the Omni Shoreham or the nearby Marriott. Breakfast served all day! read more

Came here for brunch because my friend lives next-door and said it is a very popular spot! There was a line out the door full of larger groups, but luckily they had a table for 2 open so my friend and I were promptly seated. When we sat down, we were given the tiniest plastic cups of water that I have ever seen (I drink a lottttt of water, so this was kind of a bummer). Had to wait multiple times for refills throughout brunch as they don't leave a large bottle on your table. As I just started a low carb diet for the new year, the restaurant was pretty accommodating for my order which I appreciated. I ordered the burger with no buns and a side of kale caesar salad substituted for the fries. Make sure you ask for no croutons if you are on a low carb or keto diet as there are a lot in my salad lol. The food was good, but probably would not travel back up to woodley park for it. read more

We had a party of 5 and food took quite a while. One of the guys i was with had to ask for his drink 3 times, kept getting forgotten. Went last Saturday around 11am. Patio was busy, but not full. We got a table for two right in the middle of the patio. They poured us some water and never came back. No attempts at eye contact or hand waving helped. People who came in after us got served. After at least 20 minutes of this, we got up and left. We're neighbors and have been here several times. An attractive little stonehouse right next to the cathedral, within the cathedral's compound, houses this coffee shop. It is very different from the larger Open City, which is more a typical brunch-restaurant, while this is a true café. It must attract cathedral visitors, but it doesn't feel like stocked with tourists, from the looks of it. They have wifi. Good Service, food is good, the diner is spacious, what more could you ask for? The diner is close to the metro, what I like about this diner was that they served breakfast all day. The hash brown bowl was flavorful and heavy. The fruitful stuffed French toast was on a healthy side compared to other stuffed French roasts I've had, real fresh blueberries and strawberries. The salmon was kind of on a the fishy side, lucky there were lemons although the spinach was very flavorful and the wild rice was a nice touch. read more

This was across from my hotel so it was Easy to eat here. I ordered a chicken sandwich and fries with a lemonade. The chicken sandwich had a Brussel sprouts and kale slaw which was interesting and jalapeños on the sandwich. It does not come with a side, so fries were extra. The fries tasted like they were fresh cut. Crunchy on the outside soft on the inside. I kept asking myself if they were frozen or fresh. I couldn't tell. But i think they were fresh cut. Update -- 7/22 bumping up a star for the manager reaching out to try to amend this situation. Willing to come back another day to try this restaurant again and give it a second chance. Hopefully service is better next time! -- Ridiculously slow service. Sat for almost 15 minutes before anyone came over and even brought us water. When I asked the host at the front who was speaking to someone in their bakery section both women gave me the most disinterested looks. They seemed incredibly understaffed. 2 tables who sat after us got their food before the waiter even took our order. Food wise - I had the breakfast burrito. It was smothered in sauce which would have been better on the aide even though was good sauce. Made it hard and messy to hold the burrito. The real kicker here was that the inside of the burrito was borderline ice cold. Definitely not even room temperature. Didn't even bother trying to flag down a waiter to tell them since we had such a hard time even ordering. Not much gluten free options available. The waiter said they're still bringing the old menu back slowly since reopening from COVID. No gluten free bread at the moment. Heard a rumor they use to source from Rise Bakery a few blocks down. read more

Fantastic breakfast spot across from the Omni Shoreham hotel. We ended up dining here two times during our recent stay at D.C. I found the prices to be reasonable and the breakfast selections were delicious. I ordered the two egg breakfast with the addition of the sausage. I love their signature hash brown squares! I like the fact that they are open late and offer breakfast all day long. Open City has a nice ambiance going on and they offer lots of seating, inside and outside, for their customers. The service is very friendly here too. If I ever find myself in D.C again, I would dine at Open City again. read more

Really nice place for breakfast and brunch. They are open early which is a huge plus. The Huevos Rancheros was delicious, would definitely order again. We also got two drinks, Bloody Mary and mimosa which were very good but took a while to receive them, we were almost finished with the breakfast by the time they arrived at the table. Great food, and an amazing selection of hot and cold drinks we went there for brunch and I was very impressed with the menu, they have many vegetarian options and I highly recommend ordering that hash brown block it looks like a brick but it is super delicious. Also for the coffee's they do offer nondairy milk which is a necessity these days. That place is easy to get to because it's right by the metro and the neighborhood is very nice when I went there it was cold so I didn't get to sit outside but I believe it would be an excellent experience when the weather is nice to sit in that beautiful neighborhood and dine outside I will definitely go back and try that myself read more

Lovely place This is my first time here but I pass this place often and there is always a crowd. Food - Tastes amazing. Delicious. It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely come back here for a meal. The bacon was crisp and thick cut, the grits were so creamy, the hash browns were pretty cool too! They are like hash brown patties cut in little rectangles. Staff - WONDERFUL! Our waitress name was Kierra (sp) and there was a gentleman who assisted named Gabe. This is a perfectly fine place for brunch. Offering a nice wide variety of teas, coffee drinks, beers, mimosas etc - you can definitely quench your thirst. Arriving at peak brunch time we expected a bit of a wait, the day was nice, you can grab a coffee from the bar while you wait outside - what we weren't happy with was being told a 45 minute wait and waiting for an hour and 10(happens though, not like they intended to give us an incorrect time). Food came out extremely fast. Like, spooky fast. Great with the biscuit and gravy was delightful. Rich, salty, good texture. The biscuit? A little burnt, a little dry, still had a good flavor. Other than that, had a regular American breakfast - eggs over easy, toast, sausage, nothing I'd write home about but it was all fine. I was staying at the Omni Hotel across the street, and Open City came up as a place to visit. After a very long drive, I popped in around 11PM. The space had good crowd chatting, dining, and working. I took advantage of their all day breakfast by ordering Chicken & Waffles. The waffle was very good, and had a hint of cinnamon I want to say. The chicken was nicely seasoned. The service was good. I've been interested in trying Open City for quite sometime. It took a trip to the Zoo with our daughter and family to finally get us there. Before going, I looked at their menu and found it had a decent selection of reasonably priced items. We were here on a Saturday around 5 p.m. The place was doing a good business already. Yet they were able to accommodate our party of seven. We ended up sitting in a room that looked like it had been added as an after thought. The acoustics weren't the greatest so it wasn't easy having conversations. The staff here is friendly and efficient. It didn't take long for our server to get to us to take our drink orders. My husband, son-in-law and I had sodas, while our daughter had one of the fall beers they had on tap (I can't remember which one). The kids all had milk. We started out with an appetizer of grilled chicken wings with ranch. The wings were properly cooked and not dried out at all. While the skin wasn't crispy, it had that nice flavoring that comes from grilling, as well as a bit of spiciness. We all liked them. For dinner, my husband and I both had the "Mass Ave. BLT" which is described this way: "Lots of applewood smoked bacon with lettuce, tomato and garlic mayo". I had a side of fries with mine (the sides here are a la carte). Originally I had considered having a side of mac and cheese but the waiter couldn't tell me what cheeses were in it, so in the interest of keeping things less complicated, I chose the fries. My husband didn't have a side. This sandwich certainly lived up to its promise of "lots of applewood smoked bacon", which I was pleased to see. The bread was toasted and the garlic mayo only faintly tasted of garlic. I enjoyed this sandwich while my husband would have preferred less bacon and more lettuce and tomato. As for me---I'm all about the bacon---and it was good! The fries weren't bad at all. Our daughter and son-in-law both had the Open City Burger, which consists of: "White cheddar and applewood smoked bacon on a potato bun with a side of chipotle mayo". Our daughter decided to forego the mayo. Both were very pleased with their burger as it was cooked exactly to their liking. Our daughter also had a cup of "Classic beef chili" which consists of: "ground beef, onions, peppers and kidney beans served over brown rice and topped with a three cheese blend, sour cream and cilantro". She said that she found mushrooms in it and since she's no mushroom fan, she wasn't happy about that. Otherwise, while she didn't rave about it, she said it was good. Two of the kids had breakfast for dinner, the kid-sized portion (breakfast is served all day). They had scrambled eggs, a pancake, bacon and an English muffin. The pancake had powdered sugar on top which the kids added some syrup. They both liked it and ate everything on their plate. Their brother had the kids spaghetti and meatball. It came in a bowl and the pasta was fettucini, which was odd. He liked it a lot. I had some fries left and offered them to him and he dipped them in the tomato sauce before eating them. All in all an all round decent meal. The kitchen was on the slow side. When the check came, the gratuity was included in it. The total was $125 + change for the seven of us. We would consider eating here again due to the reasonable prices. I debated between 3 or 4 stars and settled on 3 because it is "A-OK". read more
