I'm a fan! We have had 2 meals here in 5 days, so you know we like it! We've had 2 dinners here this week. The place gets busy, so go at an off time or expect a wait. I had the fried chicken and waffles both times and loved them. The chicken is a leg and thigh which made me skeptical, but it was yummy. The waffles were perfect, not too mushy or overdone. The only change I'd make is to have thicker syrup. The waitstaff is good and attentive. The food comes out quickly. We got a cookie on the way out and it was delicious. Don't miss the baked goods and desserts near the entrance. We tried to go here for breakfast, but the 25 minute wait (even in the rain) deterred us. This is one popular place! A truly exceptional brunch experience. Me & James were going to play golf on this Sunday but it was just a bit on the chilly side so we opted to get some brunch and then go to a driving range. James had been before and said it was a good experience so we checked it out. We got there at 1p and it was busy. The hostess said a 45 minute wait. It turned out to be 30 minutes. The menu is extensive with some excellent and healthy choices. I opted for the Royale which gives you the choice of 2 eggs any style, I got the chicken sausage, wheat toast, tater tots and two pancakes w/coffee. It was crazy busy but our server Sean was a real pro. He got to us quickly and often and kept our drinks full and made sure we had a positive experience. He had a great attitude even though he was running 90 miles per hour taking care of his other tables. So many plus points for this place. A great location, excellent menu, quality food at a fair price. Two very large dining rooms, one with a large 'sit down' bar so if you're flying solo this is a good option. The one dining room is open and well lit with large atrium skylights. It also has a nice outdoor seating area so when the weather suits this has got to be a great spot. read more

She just threw our menus on the table and left without saying anything. After 15 minutes, we had to flag down a waiter. He yelled at my wife while taking her order. It took another 10 minutes to receive 2 of the 3 drinks. He did not offer any straws or say I'll be right back with the rest of your drinks. Open City is a good (not great) diner. We went for lunch on a Friday after leaving the National Cathedral. It was about noon and the place was packed but we were seated almost immediately at a nice table near the windows. The server showed us how to adjust the blinds but she neglected to bring us both water glasses. Their menu is extensive they have traditional breakfast a brunch foods e.g., benedicts, scrambles, omelets, pancakes, french toast, etc. breakfast drinks (with and without alcohol), sandwiches, burgers and more. They also serve beer and wine. The restaurant is open and bright. They have an big outdoor patio which I think would be very enjoyable on a sunny warm day. They have tables and booths as well as a lunch counter for seating. The interior was warm and inviting. Diner like but in an upscale, hipster kind of way. We ordered chicken and waffles and a bacon scramble, grits and an almond croissant. The scramble and the almond croissant were amazingly delicious. Hours later I am still able to savor the flavorful bits of egg, bacon and cheese but the chicken and waffles was simply, meh. The chicken was dry and a very very dark brown, almost burnt but not quite. Of course, because it's me, we also ordered dessert. I had the peanut butter pie which was fluffy and creamy and wonderful with a side of vanilla ice cream and a vegan dark chocolate coconut ... mousse or torte which was OK at best. The flavors were good but it was very rich and we could not finish it. Our server was rushed and initially, when we arrived, she had a lot of tables. I thought our service would improve as the crowd thinned but that proved not to be the case. She was not particularly attentive and she had to be reminded twice each for our requests for cream and water. Overall, Open City is a good value with good (but not great) food. Open city has been one of my go to food restaurants for a few months and it is continuously great quality. I've gotten hot drinks to go, carryout sandwiches, and was finally able to eat at their outdoor patio area for brunch. Seating on a Saturday morning was relatively quick, but I also arrived without a reservation and was able to get a table within 15 minutes. I started with their bourbon chai and will definitely be recommending and getting it again the next time I go. Their chai was great, but the additional bourbon made for a great brunch latte. The chicken and waffles was also delicious. The chicken was perfectly breaded and seasoned and the waffle was made perfectly. My only complaint is that it came with a tub of seasoned butter on the side but I'm glad they didn't add it to the entire waffle and put it on the side. Open city's breakfast items have never disappointed and I will definitely go regularly. read more

Well I wanted to like this place better. Breakfast was ok. I had eggs over easy and they were swimming in butter or grease. The hash browns are in a square that have been deep fried. Good rye toast. Great coffee but no refills were offered. Nothing but sugar on table and the waiters never came back to ask if we needed anything. Water was never refilled. Sausage was ok and friend had bacon that was very fatty but bacon isn't supposed to be healthy anyway. Probably ok to try but they need more help. read more

Stopped by Open City for breakfast on a Saturday morning and it was already busy. They have a modern old look with wood grain, but aim for a hipper vibe with blaring music and big screen TV's near the bar area. Sat at the bar due to its available seating and service was fast. Ordered the Open City Royale with unknown expectations and it arrived quickly. For $13, you get a huge plate of food. The French toast was delicious and the Hash Browns were square like McDonalds HB, but twice as large. Only disappointing part was the Toast, it was barely warm. Overall, when you first read Open City's entry, you see they have over 1000 reviews. They are well deserved as I was surprised with the quality and quantity of my breakfast, it was good! Twenty years ago I lived in Wodley Park; then a culinary waste land in need of revamping. During Hurricane Irma I left Miami and went to the Omni Shoreham. I noticed Open City across the street and decided to try it out. I loved it. This week I am here again in D.C. as my daughter does a summer program at Georgetown. Calling me from my perch at the Omni was open city. This is my review. I normally go after my morning walk through Rock Creek Parkway. I have had the 2 eggs, with the signature hash brown square and wheat toast with chicken sausage (add on). The hash brown square has been consistent in all my visits. The chicken sausage taste is indistinguishable from a pork sausage which attests to its quality. It is not dry whatsoever. I alternate with the bagel and salmon. The plate brings copious amounts of cream cheese but not salmon. I take it all down with their mocha. Which has been solid. The price is right on the money. Service: spotty. Sometimes I have drank my mocha and the meal then comes out or vice versa. One time my wife ordered a non fat latte and they brought her a regular latte which caused her to make a bee line to the bathroom. Only once was I given a spoon to stir my mocha. Sugar is on the table but raw and Splenda is not and you got to wait for it to be brought. Ambiance: It's a local place and casual. There are people there eating after exercising or have a morning business meeting. Nice cross current. Had the service not been inconsistent in all my visits I think I would have given them the benefit of the doubt and bumped them up; but really it's a solid 4. read more

Typically this place is like a zoo on weekend mornings but I was off on a Thursday morning and decided to come here for an impromptu breakfast. I had a house coffee with cream, yeah real honest to goodness cream and not that half and half stuff. I was momentarily tempted by the thought of having a boozy milkshake but pulled myself together and did the responsible adult thing and ordered the two egg breakfast with a side of sausage. The coffee was served with a couple of cute little animal crackers and was good and deep roast just the way I like it. The scrambled eggs were the perfect consistency without any tell tale burnt brown parts so I commend the chef. The hash brown was an unexpected delight and more like a perfectly seasoned elegant potato cake than a typical hash brown. Definitely the best hash brown that I've ever had before. The sausage was a little dry so I might try the bacon next time around. The server did take it off the bill when I asked her too. What's not typical is that this place has a full on bar counter running along the back wall so I'm going to have to come back to try some of the drinks that they carry on tap. There is also a separate coffee/tea/pastry counter near the entrance. They also have happy hour specials but since I've only been for breakfast haven't had a chance to try this yet. I've come with my pup before and sat outside when the weather's good so that's also another option. Service is good. Waitstaff is attentive. Can't think of much not to like about this place. Stopped by Open City on a Sunday afternoon with a friend who was in town from Florida for a day. We were there after brunch hours so it wasn't busy at all. We were seated immediately. I still had breakfast (because there is never a wrong time for breakfast). I got the Open City Royale, and honestly was underwhelmed. Nothing was bad, but nothing was particularly noteworthy in terms of flavor or texture. My friend ordered one of the pizzas, which I actually liked better than my food. The pizza wasn't overly greasy, it was a thinner crust, but it wasn't flimsy. The toppings also stayed on the crust well. I'd actually go back for their pizza again. The reason they actually get enough to round up to four stars is service. The staff were friendly when we walked in. Our waiter was fantastic. He gave is just enough time to consider the menu, put our order in right away, checked back a good number of times. He was knowledgeable about the menu, and made good suggestions. read more

First time I'd ever been here since I'm not in this part of DC often, but I'm really glad my friends and I went to Open City! I was the first to arrive, so I unfortunately had to hit the hostess with a request for an 11-seater table (one of my friends called ahead but they don't take reservations, at least for parties that big). I felt bad, but Open City does this cool thing where they have one large table available for large parties on a first come first serve basis. Luckily the rest of the crew showed up in time to grab the table, and we were seated in less than 10 minutes, no reservation. And the food was good too! I had the huevos rancheros and an iced coffee. The iced coffee was good (tho i prefer dunkin'), and the huevos were super flavorful, not too heavy, and were a great start to a long day of walking thru the zoo - which is something you should do if you're in the area! Overall, great seating policy, great food, and great service. 10/10 baby orangutans are adorable. read more

This review is for their hash brown bowl and coffee. I asked for the hashbrowns without meat, and asked if I could sub that for an additional egg instead. On the menu, an additional egg is 1.50, while the meat is 2.50. The waiter told me sure, I can do that for you. When I got the bill, however, I got charged 1.25 for an extra egg. I didn't bring it to his attention, so I have no idea whether they would have removed the charge. As for the food quality itself, the hash brown bowl had good flavor, jalapeños and mushrooms and some other vegetables in it. I like over easy eggs in this style of dish, because the yolks are like my hollandaise. The potatoes were a little bit gummy and oversaturated with oil. That was disappointing, because so many of the reviews and the pictures showed a crispy hashbrown square. I guess when you get the bowl they do it differently. The coffee was solid. I'm from Portland which definitely prides self on its coffee quality. This was not as good as numerous roasters there, but it was a nice full roast rounded nose. apart from the confusion over the extra egg, and my server was attentive given his workload and the number of tables he was taken care of. Found this place trying to find Starbucks. Glad I came in. The hostess and the coffee staff were friendly and chatted with me while I waited for my coffee. The place looked inviting with many families and youndlg adults for breakfast. There is even a patio with lots of seating and shade. I enjoyed my coffee (kudos for the coffee) and will defintely come back if I am near the Washington Zoo or attending a conference at the Marriott Wardman. Mad house...but not a long wait and well worth it. We almost walked away because it seemed like the place was just too crazy. We were a party of 4 and were seated within 2 minutes. I started with a mimosa. I wasn't planning on drinking but after reading some other reviews all I wanted was a mimosa. The waiter came and got our order nice and quick. It was great. I got the meal with a little of everything. I got wheat bread instead of white and my mother got an English muffin instead of white bread. Not a big deal. Who knows maybe the waited didn't hear correctly because it was so loud. Maybe the chef mixed something up. Maybe the person that brought the meals grabbed the wrong one. But it came out so fast that I didn't even care. It was more food then I could even eat. I was going to get something smaller but I thought I would just share with my daughter. She had made it explicitly clear that she had nut allergy & asked multiple times if the food was nut free. She was told by the server that it was nut free. After a few bites she started throwing up & had severe anaphylactic reaction. Her friends had to call 911 as after epipen she still experienced symptoms & was rushed to ER. It's extremely concerning that such an incident happened & I have not seen the restaurant taking any ownership for this incident. The other got the southwest breakfast and wasn't really a fan either. We also got the stuffed French toast. The toast part was very dry (tasted like regular toast) the stuffing was soooo good!
