We dined at Open Range on Christmas Eve and had a great time. I was a little hesitant to make a reservation since past reviews seem to be a hit or miss. But, my husband and I decided to bite the bullet. There aren't many options for Christmas Eve dining in town anyway. Our waitress, who seemed to also be one of the bartenders was very sweet. We sat close to the entrance so we got a little cold when the front doors opened but it wasn't bad overall. The interior was very cute and inviting. We ordered way too much food but I'll break it down dish by dish... * Lemon Drop: Worth every penny. I wish I had more in a glass. * Bone Marrow: Not bad. It could have used a tad more seasoning but the sourdough bread definitely helped elevate the flavor. I wish the bread was toasted but no big deal. * French Onion Soup: Delicious! My husband hates onions but loved the soup here. It was especially tasty on a semi-cold Christmas Eve night. * 16 oz. Ribeye: Cooked perfectly. I love a cast iron seared steak and the beef tallow made it even better. We decided to split a steak - already knowing we'd order way more than two people could eat. * Lobster Mac & Cheese: It was much better than I was expecting. * Heirloom Baby Carrots: There was something about this dish that just didn't do it for me. I'm not sure if it was the spices, or lack of, but still better than others. * Cornbread skillet: A reliable side if it's something you're craving but nothing to write home about. * Cookie skillet: Not very exciting. The cookie was okay but the huckleberry ice cream made it much better. * Dow's 10-year: Treat yourself! This port was the perfect balance of sweet and smooth. My husband also ordered french fries and there was nothing special about 'em. He's not a fan of truffle fries so these were plain. 13 dudes walked through a completely empty Open Range to a Hogwartz-like table in the back, as this was *the* dinner for the bachelor party. I was seated at one of the heads, and immediately absorbed my surroundings. The first thing I picked up on was a Tshirt hanging in the kitchen that had Trump's Mugshot with the text "Wanted... For President." The 2nd thing I picked up on was our waitress looked straight out of the Renaissance. She looked just like the Mona Lisa, but with a modern twist. I'm really shy, but after a negroni or 2, I told her as much. I thought it was a compliment, but I don't think she really appreciated it. I know she went back to the kitchen and took a good hard look at a picture of the Mona Lisa on google images, because she came back and said "The Mona Lisa is NOT cute..." I jabbed back with "It's literally the most valuable portrait ever painted..." My homie, who the group knows as "The Rizzler," chimed in with a "You're like if the Mona Lisa was extremely beautiful..." He proceeded to ask her to be his date to the wedding, but she is in a very happy relationship. Shooters shoot though and he stays shooting turn-around fades over the double team. You can't help but respect that. After we all went around the table saying kind/not so kind words about the Bachelor, we put in our orders. I went with the 16oz Beef Ribeye ($72) because I'm a beast. Diesel, one of the groomsmen who I met on this trip, asked if they had a burger to which Mona said "No, I'm sorry..." Diesel whispered to me in a genuinely curious, yet slightly embarrassed tone "Is a Ribeye good? I've never had one." I held back my internal thoughts of "BRO YOU'VE NEVER HAD A RIBEYE!?!?!?" as he proceeded to confide in me that he had the palate of an 8 year old, but wanted to expand his taste. I told him he had to pull the trigger on the Ribeye. The food came and as I sat there thinking this ribeye was the poster child for a 7.5/10, Diesel grabs my arm while smiling from ear to ear and says while still chewing "Bro oh my god, this is legit the best steak I've ever had in my life." I love the Diesels of the world, genuinely happy to experience new things in life that I take for granted. We are all on our own journeys through life. We were in here for about 2 and a half hours total, ripping wine, negronis, coors lights, espresso martinis, and some 7.5/10 Ribeyes. Very disappointed. The food was just not that good. First the lobster bisque is spicy, like really spicy and it doesn't say that on the menu. It over powers the lobster and there is no point in using the "fine herbs" with something that is going to make you sweat. My dad had to send it back. The replace, french onion soup, did not hit the mark. It didn't have a lot of onion flavor and generally lacked the complexity of the dish. The baked bri we had was ok. But it was just a stacking of honey and nuts which could have been enhanced by salt or spices or something. the bri itself just seemed middle of the road in flavor. The biggest disappointment was my halibut. I thought an upscale joint where you pay $50 for a piece of fish would not over cook it. It was dry; also the only flavor I really got was parmesan, the pesto didn't do much. The broccoli was good-it was chared and seasoned. The guests i was with report there steaks we fine-too salty though-cooked nicely. There was also a lobster tail that was cooked correctly and dipped in butter. Located in DTN BZN right on Main Street - very easy to find. Arrived at 8pm on a Saturday night. The place was busy, but not full. We were greeted promptly and got a table right away. There is a mix of high top seating and standard tables. The ambiance is modern - open space, nicely appointed. Our a waiter was friendly, engaging, and not intrusive. The menu is not large, but covers a lot of options. We opted to share several items: Crispy Cauliflower - very good. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside Steak Frittes - very good. Sirloin steak (med rare and tender). French fries are crispy and slightly salty Crispy Brussel Sprouts - Brussel sprouts mixed with bacon and apples. As a vegetarian I was not expecting to have a very good experience at a steakhouse like Open Range. I was invited to Open Range as part of a group dinner and decided to go when I saw it had some vegetarian options. I ordered the Mixed Green Salad which was good and did not have too much vinaigrette. I also ordered Sauteed Vegetables, which turned out to be broccolini and asparagus, Madeira Glazed Mushrooms, and Crispy Brussel Sprouts, which turned out not to be vegetarian because I didn't notice the last ingredient was pancetta. All the sides were excellent, especially the Brussel Sprouts which many people were complimenting. My son ordered the Dry Aged American Wagyu NY 14 oz. He wanted to order medium rare but the server suggested getting medium because he said the medium rare is very close to rare. However, the medium turned out to be closer to medium-well done. Still, my son very much liked the flavor of the steak though the sear wasn't that good. We also tried the Truffle Fries, which I couldn't stop eating. The person who ordered the Truffle fries said his Steak Frites weren't that good because they were a little overcooked and he thought the cut they used was probably a cheaper one. What a fun little surprise! We were greeted with a warm welcome and seated immediately. I ordered the steak frites and my husband the burger. A burger is a burger (but my husband would disagree, he loves a good burger). The burger was great although he was hesitant because it was being served on an English Muffin! My steak was SO tender I didn't even use my knife! Delicious! And the fries were also cooked to perfection! I'm such a french fry snob, if I'm gonna use my calories up they better be good! Utter disappointment. You spend over $100 on a single steak and it should be tender, properly cooked, and properly seasoned. This steak was none of the above. Awesome dinner place in Bozeman. Surrounded by a huge number of great bistros and gastropubs in Bozeman, this place stands out well. My wife and I split their special -- beef cheeks with awesome mashed potatoes and a HUGE bowl of crispy Brussels sprouts. Being in Montana, compelled us to seek out a nice steak dinner and we landed at Open Range. The dining room is nice, floor tables spread out which I appreciated. We had a reservation (not sure if you need one) and were promptly seated upon our arrival. They had some interesting craft cocktails on the menu, so we started with that. Mark's Old Fashioned & a Party Dress. Both very tasty. They kept our water glasses full which I am very fond of! We split a Caesar salad and both ordered the Waygu sirloin. My friend got hers Diane style, I did the Whiskey Onions and Horseradish. We also ordered the bread service for $6 (skip it, not worth paying the $ for 5 small pieces of unmemorable carbs). The salad was very good, the steaks juicy and delicious. They came with fingerling potatoes (meh, maybe upgrade to one of the other starches?) and carrots. They have high tables and booths as well. Food/price: - Sautéed scallops ($23): served with couscous, sautéed asparagus, lemon mousseline, herbs, and preserved lemon aioli. Personally, I thought the scallops were overly salted - to the point where even my husband (who asks for extra salt packets with his McDonald's fries) said the same thing. It definitely needed a bite of everything else on the plate to really tone it down. The lemon aioli wasn't as lemony as I thought, I think more acidity would have been nice. The couscous was nice and fluffy. - 16 oz ribeye ($58): served with roasted potatoes, sautéed vegetable. The steaks are cast iron seared - which is why probably why I was just craving that grilled smoky taste. The steak was just okay, would prefer to make it ourselves at home. Another year, another Valentine's Dinner with the GF. Wanting some steak like usual, and being in Bozeman, we stopped by Open Range. They had a special VDay menu that you can also order from. We ordered from both the regular and VDay menu. We ordered: 1) the VDay Beet Salad, 2) the cheese board, 3) the VDay Pork belly, and 4) the tomahawk ribeye (this was off menu and was informed to us by the waiter). 1) The Beet Salad came out first. Beet, leafy greens, and a citrusy dressing. Nice and healthy. 2) The Cheese Board came after. I love cheese, but I guess I found that I don't like good quality cheese. Nothing wrong with the cheese board, just personally not for me. 3) Next, the Pork Belly. Charred sweet exterior. Nice, juicy, and fatty when you bite into it. This was so good. 4) Finally, the Tomahawk Steak. Man this was huge. It was cooked medium rare. Charred exterior, tender and juicy inside. Geez. Amazing top notch steak. I definitely took the charred bone and ate the charred meat on it. So happy that they had this. Rating: 5/5. Overall, amazing food. Service was also amazing, our waiter served us really good. Nice, low-lit ambience. We barely did damage on the Tomahawk Ribeye - we only ate like 1/4 of the steak. We had them pack it go to, and here was where it was a bit weird... Later that night, craving for some leftover steak, we opened the box and found that they only packed like 4 slices of steak (like 1/3 of what we had leftover)??? Bummer. We were very happy to be accommodated at such late notice on a Monday night after a long day of activities and driving. My boyfriend also enjoyed the Negroni he ordered here at Open Range. The dining room at Open Range is rather large and modern, with many tables and a full bar. The bacon came in two large pieces (when they say "thick," they aren't kidding) stacked atop slices of onion and tomato and sauce. The sauce paired with the meat nicely, but we couldn't find a need for the onion nor tomato... Are you just supposed to pick it up and bite into it? We ordered the steak frites medium, and they arrived as such, complemented by truffle fries and some sauces. The menu stated "arugula" as a component in this dish as well, but there were only a couple of wilted leaves mixed into the fries, so as an arugula fan, I was a little disappointed there. We were not, however, disappointed by the fries; we ate every piece. Key points: Steep prices. Alright presentation. Flavorful meat. I ordered the Wagyu ribeye which was over $160 for the meal. It was supposed to come with a half an order of roasted bone marrow, three sauces to go with the steak and a side. I did not get a Wagyu ribeye. It was a standard ribeye, but they tried to play it off as if it was a Wagyu ribeye. It was not a good experience of the three sauces. The mushroom sauce was the best and was edible. The chimichurri sauce was like no chimichurri sauce I have ever had and was gross. The third sauce was basically guacamole and was not edible. When the bill came, they tried to charge me for everything that I did not have. They did in the end make the bill right. However, the whole meal should've been compensated due to the lack of providing what was ordered and the fact that the staff pretty much verified, they do not serve Wagyu to the average person that orders it, hoping they will not understand the difference between that and just a good steak. Excellent service and great food except for one glaring problem. We ordered the Caesar salad and the mac and cheese both were excellent. I got the ribeye and my wife got the filet. Both were excellent cuts, very tender and well cooked. The glaring problem is that the chef put so much salt on the steak that it entirely ruined it. A steak should be liberally seasoned with salt and pepper but good lord this was a lot of salt. Just order your steak with light salt or light seasoning, you'll thank me later. I can't express how happy I was after this meal. My partner and I came here for our one night out in Bozeman and I'm so happy we chose this place. Everything was of the highest quality, the staff included and the walls covered in puppy photos... I'm sold! The wine was amazing and our steaks grilled to perfection. The toppings and sides you get to choose from will blow you mind. We also got the bone marrow appetizer which literally melted in my mouth. I never wanted to stop eating it.
