Ambience was good but that was about it!! Coming from the Kansas City area and traveling extensively we appreciate fine food. Service was just so so. It took over 45 minutes to get our meal after it was ordered and everything was cold. I had scallops which were correctly cooked but again cold! The husbands steak was good and cooked correctly. Vegetables with the steak and the steak were cold. We asked for bread and we got a small rustic loaf with a small container of flavored butter for $9.00. We also ordered mushrooms on the side which came out in an iron skillet looking perfectly sliced, perfectly bland, and tasting perfectly like canned mushrooms. Certainly not worth the $12 price tag. Overall this is not a place where I would come back to. I think they rely more on reputation, then anything else. Surely there are some better restaurants in Bozeman than this! read more

Had a wonderful experience at Open Range. The atmosphere and the restaurant are very inviting. The food was great. Had the shrimp cocktail and the bisque to start. The bisque was really good - very flavorful and done well. Had the ribeye and the fries. Loved them. Steak cooked like I ordered - medium rare and the seasoning was nice. The fries were very good especially with the truffle added to them. To top it had the cheesecake with the chocolate and raspberry on it - perfect way to end the meal. Service was very attentive. This is a beautiful restaurant and has a cozy atmosphere. My husband and I were really excited to get in without a reservation only to be disappointed by the quality of food. Service was very friendly and to be fair the skillet cornbread was absolutely amazing. We got the smash burger and the steak frites. For the extremely high cost of these items we were expecting good quality food. The smash burger was fine but nothing special. The steak was flavorless and hard to eat. This restaurant was recommended by the hotel as boasting the best meat in town but I was warned it was a bit pricey. I certainly don't mine paying for good food so I gave it a shot. The food was mediocre at best. My steak was a little chewy but steak is always hot or miss. The Caesar salad was the highlight of the meal with its fresh dressing and an egg on top! The mash potatoes were awful. They were the consistency of instant potatoes and I almost used the whole shaker of salt to season. We are still waiting for a salad and sides..... The service was horrible all around. We made a reservation months ahead for the last night of a family trip to Montana and were impressed by the menu and reviews. It took about 15 minutes to get water, and we ended up having to take place settings off the table nearby after multiple requests. Our order consisted of 2 appetizers, 1 salad, 9 mains and 8 sides. The two appetizers came and the salad did not. Then 8 of the mains and 2 sides came, our waitress was still nowhere to be seen since taking our order. After 5 minutes of the last main and no more sides coming out, I went back to the kitchen and was able to find a runner. He was able to put the order in for the last main, as it had never been ordered. We still had not seen our waitress again, when the manager finally came over and apologized and asked about the last main course. Luckily the food runner had taken that order and it came out, but not before all of the other main courses were cold from waiting. We explained that we had still not received our Lobster Mac and Cheese, Brussels Sprouts, Potato Puree, Mushrooms or Carrots..... At this point the manager asked if we still wanted them and we said yes, assuming that they would be expedited from the kitchen. Over then next 5 minutes later, we received the Potato Puree, another 10 and we received the Mushrooms and carrots. During this time we saw at least 3 brussels sprouts and 4 mac and cheese go to tables that had arrive well after us, some of which had not even ordered by the time we had not received our sides. After 40 minutes of being apologized to and never receiving the last sides, we left without desert. I guess all I can say is that it will be a memorable lifetime experience as we can always say...... At least it cannot be as horrible as Open Range.... We heard from other locals that the kitchen was new after the restaurant was acquired and that was why it had gone downhill. However, the meat that came was cooked well and the issue was with the waitress not putting the food in and the manager not expediting to solve the problem. Only meat on the menu (minus a trout) and nothing appealing for the ladies. The space is beautiful, but waitstaff very slow. Food was really off, not tasty at all and just blah. Great combination of flavors and attention to detail with ingredients and food preparation. Cast iron chicken was a little dried out in the breast but over all a great meal and would definitely return! Came on a Wednesday night during college move in week so the restaurant was quite full. This place is absolutely abysmal! Should've went with my gut feelings regarding the other awful reviews but decided to make a reservation for Christmas dinner. The beef short ribs were 90% fat and the 10% that were actually beef were extremely dry. How do you dry out short ribs?! Their 29 day dry aged prime rib was the worst prime rib anyone at our table had ever tasted. My wife ordered it medium rare and when it came to the table it was very obviously well done. When she brought it to the attention of the waiter he told her their prime rib was braised and all cooked to the same temperature. If that was the case why would he take a temperature from her when ordering? Who braises prime rib? At $90 for the prime rib this is unacceptable. The entrees came with vegetables that were different than listed on the menu and no one mentioned anything. The lobster mac and cheese was rubbery and flavorless. When the bill came the prices were different from the menu by $20. This was the icing on the cake! I spoke to the manager and he essentially could care less. He also confirmed the server straight lied to us regarding the prime rib's preparation. He corrected the items that were over priced and gave us 20% off the prime rib which didn't even get eaten so that was far from accommodating. It is clear that management and staff are not concerned about providing good guest experiences. Trust all the terrible reviews you see, this place is awful! The food is some of the worst we've had and combined with the lack of service, prices, and ambience you'd be better off at Taco Bell. read more

As well as the drinks and food. I had a couple cocktails off of their seasonal menu which were all amazing. I had the beef filet which was cooked to perfection. Deeply Disappointing. First, the service was good. Our server was engaging and efficient. The problem was the food. We were three on a Thursday, with reservations, looking forward to a really good meal based on the prior experience of one of our party. The first clue that something was off with the kitchen that day was a conversation we had with a couple (locals) who were leaving as we stood outside. We asked how it was and after a pregnant pause, the gentleman said, "Underwhelming." His wife concurred that the quality of the food did not live up to the prices. Nevertheless, we went inside and our first disappointment came with the menu. No French onion soup. It was one of the reasons we went there. They simply hadn't prepared it that day. We regrouped and placed our orders: we ordered a bread plate (it was $6 extra), two of us split a Caesar salad and the swordfish and the other had one of the steaks. We expected something special since we paid extra for bread, but a plate of three thin slices of sourdough bread cut in half and honey butter were delivered to the table. Real Caesar salad is supposed to have anchovies and at those prices, we were shocked to have to pay extra to have a few anchovies added. The dressing was bland, not a really good Caesar dressing. The description of the swordfish said it came with sticky purple rice. The swordfish itself was cooked perfectly--moist and flaky. But bland, no discernable flavor in the bit of something green on top. The rice wasn't the sweet sticky rice we expected. It looked and tasted like plain black rice, and was undercooked. The steak meal was OK. Nothing special. It doesn't come with a green vegetable, but the server was able to score some asparagus. Bottom line, for those prices, we expected a great meal. Underwhelming is an accurate description. We should have turned around at that hint of trouble and gone to Copper. read more

He informed us we were wrong as it was his favorite beer in the restaurant. And was not that Bourbony. Oh and "at least it is 11%", not my beer priority. When we arrived the restaurant was about 1/2 full. We had chicharonnes and escargots start. I ordered a salad and we had the rib eye and duck for entrees. Just tea and sodas for the table. A couple of sides, dessert and coffee. Our bill was about 100/person plus tip. Ok so now the real critique. The service was less than adequate. All the appetizers came with my salad. And before we finished our entrees came. Not sure why the rush there was no immediate need for a table as the place never was more than 2/3 full. Our beverages were always empty in fact the bus's boy was in such a hurry he filled our tea and soda glasses with water and seemingly ignored our protests. There were dishes piled on the table until after dinner. The French press came, the highlight for me as the coffee was excellent. But it got to steep for a bit as we could not raise the attention to get cream. The food: chicharonnes were ok needed salt not just chili powder. Mostly really dry and flavorless. The escargot were seasoned well but the bread was small smashed slices, please invest in a serrated knife, and dry. The steaks were a bit under cooked. Great char on the outside but the fat was not rendered at all so cold and thick. The duck was a little under as well so leaves it a bit toothy.
