Nice location. Made a 2:15 reservation. Sat down and was pressured to order right away? Food came out very fast. Our server did not appear to be happy or enjoy her job. Shortly after the food arrived I was informed it was "last call" for dessert or tea. This was very uncomfortable for me. I asked when the restaurant closed. I was told 3pm. Not sure why they honored a 2:30 reservation if they were going to try to rush guests out. I was literally told I have to leave by 3pm! ?? The food was decent, but the server made this experience very unsatisfactory. I hope the owner reads this review and at least do whatever they can to improve the customer service. They should never make a guest feel rushed the second they sit down, and on top of that, display a nasty unprofessional attitude. read more

Love everything I've tried here and they're BYOB! I feel like every table takes advantage of this because I saw a wine bottle on each table. One table even had a bottle for each person LOL. Their weekends are really busy so I recommend getting a reservation. I've had their pad thai, royal massaman curry, and duck and everything is so good. You really can't go wrong with any of your choices. Last time we went, we got this fried crab salad appetizer and it really was the perfect start to our dinner. This is my second time coming to the restaurant. The first time was last summer with a friend, and we happened upon it while strolling and thought the outdoor seating looked inviting. We both had a lunch salad and unfortunately other than that it had strawberries in it, I don't remember much else of the salad itself, except that it was delicious. We also had the iced Thai tea - wonderful!! Sometimes Thai tea can be overwhelming sweet - this was not. Last evening my husband and I were debating which of our regular places to eat at. I kept suggesting places I knew he hasn't been. He is very much a creature of habit and I think the Irish in him leans him towards basic "meat and potatoes". In other words, he isn't very adventuresome. But last evening he said: "I don't know, what about that Thai place on Division?" I spun around, still holding his hand, and said "let's go!". It was busy. It wasn't cold out, in fact, weirdly, November 11th was 70 degrees! But it was rainy, so no outdoor seating. We were seated very quickly at the first table against the left wall. There was a large party to our left, about 8 people, and in the middle of that front room, a long table with about 10 people. Yet, it wasn't overly loud, which was both surprising and nice. A young lady brought water and menus. And then we waited. That is the reason for only 4 stars - it took a good 15 minutes - and we were ready to leave at that point - before she came back for orders. I don't blame them really, we understand the lack of resources right now for wait staff - but we were hungry and felt if it took that long just to order, this might now work out for us that evening. I'm glad we waited since I know my husband and we wouldn't have gone back if we had left. We placed our orders - we hadn't realized it was a BYOB until it was too late, and since there are no drinks listed on the menu, we struck with water. I did, however, order the aforementioned Thai iced tea. This was served quickly in a mason jar-style mug. We shared the mussels. They came out quickly and piping hot. The broth is a mixture of green and red peppers, onions, and lemongrass. I had to let my husband know not to try and eat the lemongrass - I accidently bit into pieces and boy was I sorry! If you have even done it you understand; hard, tough, and bitter. Great for fragrance and infusing flavor, just don't eat it! lol But they were large and good, and the peppers and onions in the broth were a nice touch and very yummy themselves. I ordered the Lad Nar Pan, fried flat rice noodles with Asian broccoli in gravy sauce. Choice of chicken, beef or shrimp. I got the chicken. My husband ordered the seared tuna, medium. Our meals came out fairly quickly after the mussels were done. I tasted the sauce his tuna was plated on and it was really good - a sesame ginger sauce it tasted like. He also had a bowl of white rice, a goodly mound of pickled ginger (YUM!), and droplets of chili sauce along both sides of the plate. I believe the tuna itself was bedded on wilted Asian broccoli. He ate everything - he said it was really good! My dish was piping hot and smelled heavenly. And it tasted the same. The gravy was a rich, dark brown with a lot of flavor going on. I could taste sweetness, but not the main profile in the flavors. The noodles were wide and had to be cut to eat without making a mess, and the chicken was tender and plentiful. Twice during the meal, a very loud sound system came on to sing Happy Birthday. WOW - it was loud!!! It only lasted maybe a minute though, and we both had to giggle just a bit as it was not a traditional rendition of that song, and gave the place a cute flare. After our main meal, we thought we would be offered a dessert menu, offered tea/coffee. Nope. I had to ask for dessert - so not knowing what else was available, I ordered the fried ice cream I had heard about here. We each got one and the waitress laughingly said "oh, no sharing here!". The presentation is lovely. The plates come out with the single ball of fried ice cream centered on a raspberry sauce with some blueberries scattered on the plate and the waitress has a saucier filled with flaming liquid which she pours over each and presents the flaming dish to each of us. But that is where the rave for this dessert sadly ends. It is one single scoop of vanilla ice cream in a very lightly fried dough that gets a bit tough and chewy. We should have shared one. They run $10.00 each and I didn't finish since the dough started to taste "greasy" to me. We paid quickly and exited as they were getting very busy with more folks coming in and we didn't want to linger. If we had known to bring wine, or if we had coffee or such, maybe that would have been different. The place has a quaint atmosphere and is inviting. I love that they kept the old tin ceiling. Really love this place and my family frequents quite often when looking for Thai food. The Somerville location has nice outdoor seating. We are vegetarian, and we aren't too big of fans of the veggie appetizers, but this time we got the papaya salad, and it was really good - We would definitely get the papaya salad again. Another favorite of ours is the Thai curry noodles. Both the presentation of the food and flavor is spot on. Of course you can't get Thai food without Thai iced tea :) their Thai tea is a good size and price! Been craving a perfect plate of noodles for a while and their Pad See Ew did the trick. I love leafy greens and the Chinese broccoli in the dish was perfect! We also tried the Grilled Salmon (Served with chopped shrimp, fine Thai herbs, garlic pepper sauce on a layer of spinach) and Shrimp and Crab Meat Spring rolls. The soy and herb dipping sauce that comes with the spring rolls is incredible! The restaurant has a very nice ambiance. Came here to celebrate my moms birthday! I love that this place is right along a pedestrian only street in Somerville so that we can enjoy our food and do some people watching Ambiance - plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. We opted for outdoor seating because it was such a nice day. - the interior is beautifully decorated and is well lit Service - attentive and friendly staff Food - all dishes were plated beautifully - app: Shrimp and Crab Meat Spring Roll - fully stuffed with crab and shrimp! The exterior was wonderfully crispy and the sauce pairing was refreshing and a bit tangy - Grilled Salmon with garlic sauce- the garlic sauce went so well with the salmon and shrimp! This is also a hearty serving so it can be perfect for sharing. I enjoyed scooping some sauce over the rice as well. - Bangkok Duck- the duck skin is extra crispy! The red curry sauce was also just a tad bit spicy and went really well with the rice. My only complaint is that the duck was a tad dry - Pad Thai- one of my fave of pad thais that I've tasted. Noodles were perfectly tossed in a sweet and slightly tangy sauce and the bean sprouts added a pleasant crunch - Sweet Sticky Rice with Fresh Mango- you can never go wrong with sweet sticky rice and fresh mango slices! Due to my wife enjoying Thai food which she would get at lunch while at work so I was excluded, I have tried very little restaurant made Thai dishes. I have probably made more Thai food in my kitchen than I have had out. So after shopping in Somerville she suggested that we try Origin French Thai at 25 Division Street. Division Street has been closed to automobile traffic between Main and Veteran's Memorial Parkway so we needed to park in the public parking lot. Street parking is also available on the adjacent roadways, but you need to get lucky to find a space during busy hours. We walked inside of this historic building which is decorated to showcase the tin ceilings and brick walls while adding some Asian inspired lamps and wall paper. It is very cozy. Our server took our order and brought us salads. Just the right amount of balsamic vinegar was used to flavor the multiple lettuce creation. As soon as the salad plates disappeared, an entrée was placed before each of us. My beef Lad Nar had very tender and fresh tasting strips of beef with noodles and vegetables in a delicious brown gravy. Her chicken Pad Gra Praw was served in a delicious mushroom onion ginger sauce and she enjoyed it very much. With such excellent food and service at Origin French Thai, I can only give it my highest recommendation. A great place that we are already talking about returning to. read more

Honestly the food here is great but the service was some of the most hostile service I have ever received. This place is located on division street in Somerville NJ. We got there right when it opened at 5pm and the hostess asked us if we could be done by 6pm because other reservations are coming in. The dinner and appetizers itself were great but hard to enjoy with the hostess breathing down your back. She constantly came into the room to check the progress on our plates and the waiters never speak to you even when you are saying thank you. The menu is expansive, offering classic Thai curries and noodle dishes in addition to a unique menu of French fusion. My friend made a reservation for our party of 5, and it was pretty busy inside with a decent ambiance. I ordered the royal massaman curry with shrimp, and I thought it was okay. I liked the jumbo size of the shrimp, but the curry was a bit too thick and I didn't particularly love the flavor of it. My friend and I split the crème brûlée which was good. Origin French Thai is an upscale Thai restaurant with great ambiance, delicious food, yet slightly pricey. The Thai entree prices are in-line with most Thai restaurants in the area. However, the French inspired Thai options can run you close to $30. We ordered the Shrimp and Crabmeat springs rolls and the Vegetable Imperial roll for appetizers. Both were good, but I especially liked the Imperial roll. For dinner we got the Pad See Ew with Chicken, Pad Khing with tofu and vegetables, and the Wild Boar. Ordered 2 chicken fried rice, vegetable egg fried rice, and shrimp Pad Thai (all dishes were asked to be made spicy) My specific order was the chicken fried rice and to be honest, I've had much better fried rices. Even though the spice level was perfect, it just wasn't what I was looking for. Had too many spinach leaves (even though I love spinach!) and something was a bit off with the taste of the rice. Something that was also disappointing was the price! Way too expensive for just fried rice even though the portions were pretty big. I also got to try the Pad Thai and that tasted delicious! Delicious meal and great service! We ordered the shrimp satay which was like a little shrimp meatball with a delicious plum sauce. Interesting but tasty, I would probably order again. Chicken satay is also delicious - moist and flavorful with the peanut sauce. Pad kee maow and pad see ew were also delicious. I got medium spicy and it was definitely spicy, but added a bit more chili flakes for a REAL nice kick (I enjoy spicy food - for mild mouthed people, 3 will be SPICY). In previous visits we've also had the wild boar which was really nice and tender and royal massaman curry. All great choices! I did takeout here, and was looking forward to a Thai dinner packed with flavor. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I ordered the Somtum salad which is one of my favorite Thai salads. This salad was more like a basic American salad. It had no spice or flavor like it's supposed to have. The dressing wasn't even lime juice, but more like a Chinese dressing. The Pad Thai I had for my dinner was ok/good. It needed more of a sweet and savory fusion to it though, but overall ok. The chocolate soufflé I had for dessert was very good, but the vanilla ice cream it came with had ice chips in it. This place blows my mind every time. I have easily eaten here at least 20 times, for celebrations, birthdays, etc. This restaurant always produces such delicious, high-quality meals. Their menu is super creative and unique. The wait staff is always extremely friendly and it is BYOB (an added plus)! Pictured is my shrimp pad thai but I frequently also get their pad see ew and have tried multiple appetizers, all which are always amazing. If I could bust out another 5 star rating for this fusion restaurant, I would. It's been a very long time since I've dined at a place where decor, service and the food exceeded my exceptions. The decor is Thai exotic with velvet drapes, high tin ceilings, gorgeous hanging lights and large mirrors. The space is dimly lit so it makes a great place for a nice celebration of any kind. Here is what we ordered from their lunch specials: Appetizers: - Steamed Mussels (mussels were tiny but the broth was amazing) - Shrimp & Taro Dumplings (plump & delicious) Lunch Entrees come w/soup or salad: - Crispy Salmon - Khao Na Ped (Duck) - Yum Poo Nim (soft shell crab, shredded mango, pineapple with a sticky cake rice) OMG!!! This was so delicious. The flavor profile on this entire plate married well together. I also chose a tomato soup with my entree and it had a nice spicy kick to it. YUM!! I will say that most of the dishes we had was more Thai than French. As for the desserts, we ordered the Chocolate cake soufflé w/Espresso ice cream and the Mango Sticky Rice infused with Pandan w/Coconut cream & slivered almonds over Coconut Gelato. Went for lunch and got pla pad cha. I have food sensitivities and specifically asked if the fish was breaded. The waitress confidently said no so I believed her. The fish came out and not only was the portion so tiny, but the fish was pretty clearly coated with some sort of breading. The menu having no detailed description of the dish made this even more dicey for me because there was nothing saying it was breaded or even coated in anything to begin with. I figured I would trust the waitress on this one and ate it anyway, but I hope this is a bit of a cautionary tale for people with sensitivities/allergies to be extremely careful and clear about preparation directions for their meals. The location is right off of Main Street and really nice area to sit outside. We got chicken satay to start which was delicious and came with a really great peanut sauce. I got the pad Thai with chicken which was amazing and ended off with fried ice cream. I've had fried ice cream multiple times and this was one of my favorite. Well let me just say....I LOVE THIS PLACE! It is, by far, my favorite Thai restaurant in the state. I have tried sooo many. Why 4 stars, you might ask? ok not to sound pretentious and hoity toity but i live in nyc and rarely get excited when eating out in nj. no hate tho i'm a jersey girl! that being said- i do look forward to the next time i visit origin!!!!! we tried the following: appetizers - french onion soup -- a little on the sweet side which was different - escargot -- would've loved if it was a touch more garlicky, salty, oily etc. it was definitely delicious but tasted like a healthier version than what i'm used to - yum poo nim -- this was a special! get it if you can bc the soft shell crab paired with tart mangos was delicious entrees - bangkok duck -- omg yes. i would've loved if the duck was more tender it was a little dry but overlooking this bc the curry flavor was so developed. and the bit of pineapples? just yes. - steak au poive -- so tender. we loved this filet mignon. - roasted lamb -- i didn't try this personally but my father praised it as the best executed lamb he's ever had. ever. that's very high praise from him overall a great experience. we can't wait to dine here again read more

Seating was comfortable but not sure if they have outdoor heaters because it did get a little chilly. I've been coming here since 2011 so it's about time I finally write a review! Food: The food is excellent. Expect to spend about $20-$25 a person if you're getting an entree and an appetizer. This time around my mom and I had the Steamed Vietnamese Rice Ravioli ($10), Veg Pad Khing with Tofu ($15), Original Duck Tamarind ($26) and the Creme Brulee ($6). The Ravioli was soft and full of flavor - definitely my favorite part of the meal. Our entrees were great as usual - the duck was very rich and we couldn't finish it. They also have great lunch specials - slightly smaller portion, cheaper price. Drinks: It's BYOB so you can go to town with wine, beer and champagne. I've ordered their Thai Iced Tea and it's pretty much what you'd expect anywhere. Ambiance: A great place for a date. They have comfortable booths for couples as well as small and large dining tables. Great mood lighting. Service: Good service, I've never had a complaint.
