Loved our brunch at Orphan! We tried the Dragon Potatoes and Avocado Scramble, and both were delicious. The potatoes were especially good crispy, flavorful, and a perfect side to the scramble. Everything tasted fresh, and the portions were generous. Such a great brunch spot. We'll definitely be back!
Parking 3/5 Due to the location parking is really hard. Please read signs before parking around the residential areas as well. Restaurant 5/5 Indoor and outdoor seatings. Love the corner outdoor seatings that is under a pergola and plants wrapping around it. Such a refreshing touch Customer Service 5/5 upbeat services while slammed back. Check on the tables in rotation. it. Ambiance 5/5 Love how quiet it was but loud with all the ins and outs (don't know how to explain it). Everyone was in their own conversations and Bathroom 3.5/5 (index bathroom) went to the last stall with the urinal and it just smells horrible. The bathroom was clean but the smell was super strong Food 5/5 The food looked amazing and my brunch was amazing as well. The pictures says it all Looking for great service, both indoor and outdoor, great food and one of the most chillest vibes look no further. Orphan is here to serve and dish up some great food and area for bonding for you fellow foodies. Located right at corner and an amazing neighborhood you find this beautiful set up next to the famous Rosie's BBQ. Totally recommend the place. The price is super reasonable. Orphan is one of the restaurants that I have seen continually recommended for breakfast and brunch. Despite living close by, I have never remembered to drop by. Luckily, today I finally went with a friend visiting from out of town and wanted a nice sit down breakfast/brunch option. We came by at 11am and while the patio was nearly completely full, we were able to get a table inside immediately. Orphan's interior is very upscale California quirky and makes me think of the eclectic designs found in places like Santa Cruz. Service was quick, friendly, and within minutes we had chilled waters and hot coffee in hand while we perused the menu. Recommendations I had seen for Orphan highlighted their French Toast along with their house-made rosemary bread and rosemary potatoes. My wife ordered the French Toast and it was delightful! Griddled exterior on the toast with a sweet custard-y center. The fruit puree in combination with fresh strawberries and blueberries helped to brighten the dish without adding any more sweetness so it felt very balanced yet delectable. My wife did not even opt to have it with maple syrup. For myself, I was deeply intrigued by the Savory Cakes, which were extremely fluffy buttermilk pancakes with bacon, jalapeños, and jack cheese folded in. I have made savory waffles in the past, but never thought about doing the same with pancakes. Orphan's Savory Cakes has inspired me to try my hand at the dish. These pancakes were probably some of the lightest, fluffiest pancakes I've had in years and the sweet, savory, and spicy flavors were enlightening! Add in topping the cakes with pure, maple syrup and you should be as close to heaven as I was devouring this stack. Our friend ordered the Rosemary Breakfast (but I forgot to take a picture as I was so infatuated with my Savory Cakes ) and I was able to try a bit of the house-made bread and potatoes. Rosemary in my opinion is a double-edged sword to use because it can easily take over a dish, but the team at Orphan have a deft hand and both the bread and potatoes have a great balance. While the bread was delicious, I cannot stop thinking about those potatoes and the absolute perfection that is the exterior crisping with the interior fluffiness. Now I know why everyone says to get the potatoes. I have future designs on their Grande Breakfast Burrito because there's no way it can't be good if it includes the rosemary potatoes All-in-all I know that Orphan will be on my shortlist of places to recommend to anyone coming in to Sac and I am excited for my next visit to try the burrito!
A family favorite! Things to know before you go: - only accepts cash and checks! - no ketchup! Favorites - Dragon potatoes: carnitas with potatoes (tip: ask for extra crispy). Includes fresh tortillas, sour cream, cilantro, and black beans (I recommend them on the side if you want to keep the carnitas and potatoes crispy). - Breakfast Tamales: I really enjoy this dish for a lighter fare. Fresh green salsa and sweet corn flavor. Includes tortillas and sour cream (I also swap out the beans for crispy potatoes) - Rosemary Bread: get it as a side or as a loaf! Excellent toasted - There speciality pancakes: the savory cake is bacon and jalapeño. The blueberry cornmeal pancakes are my favorite for a lightly sweet treat. The banana blackberry is also my daughter's favorite. All three are great! Reminder... come with cash!
This is my new favorite spot in Sacramento. It feels like you're downtown, but you don't have to deal with the downtown traffic. The service was great, but make sure to bring cash because they only accept cash payments. They also have a free ATM in case you need cash, and it's no cost to use. The waitress was fantastic. Service was relatively quick, and I learned that arriving before 10 AM on weekends is the best way to avoid long lines. The food was super fresh--probably one of the best breakfasts I've had in a while in the Sacramento area.
This brunch spot was highly recommended so I made my way over to East Sacramento to try it out. I typically am not a person to wait in line but since I'm not familiar with the area, I didn't feel like trying to figure out a different place to go. The wait was only about 20 minutes, but I chose to wait for an indoor table because I was a little chilly so it ended up being slightly longer. I ordered the Rosemary breakfast and asked for my eggs, scrambled with cheese. It came out looking so good, and they actually made like a little omelette with my eggs and cheese, it was just lovely and fluffy. The rosemary bread with the butter and the blackberry purée was unreal. I could drink a cup of that purée. I was a bit disappointed in the potatoes because the salt level was astronomical. I'm someone who loves salt and it seemed like all the really crispy spots were saturated, burn my tongue level of salt. I was going to say something to the waitress, but she didn't come back until I was almost done eating. The coffee they use was from a local roaster and I went for a light roast pour over coffee and it was phenomenal. Beautifully nuanced flavors. Parking around here is rough. I parked in the neighborhood on the street behind the restaurant and I did not see any no parking signs but got a parking ticket anyway. I even looked before I left, but I saw nothing! When I got back and saw the ticket I was like WTH. I finally found the resident only parking sign about a block away on the other side of the driveway on that part of the street. Bummer.
This place is very popular, so expect a long wait time to be seated! We waited about 25 minutes for a table for 2 on a Monday morning. The staff were very friendly and continuously checked up on us throughout the meal. The food was very good and decently priced. The prices on the menu include taxes. Also, this place is cash only! They have a no-fee ATM at the door. The decor was nice! I didn't like that the water carafe they gave us was lukewarm.
I have officially been here now a few times for breakfast/brunch and I am so glad it was put on my radar by friends and family. Orphan is an adorable and delicious brunch spot in East Sac only minutes (literally a two minute drive, 10 minute walk) from McKinley Park. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor (covered) seating, has a very small parking lot (3 spots), and is cash only. They have an ATM inside and the prices on the menu already include tax. Parking can be a little difficult on the streets due to two hour limits and certain areas requiring a permit, but we've always found a spot nearby. There also can be a wait when it's busy, 20-30 minutes. The food is so good here, very filling portions, and comes out rather quickly. So far with my family we've tried the dragon potatoes, breakfast tamales, grande breakfast burrito, soy chorizo breakfast, and naked cakes. Everything has been delicious, I don't think you can order anything wrong here. Our favorite has been the dragon potatoes because of the rich flavorful carnitas! The service has also been great, the staff were very friendly and accommodating. People here also bring their dogs and are sat outside. Definitely recommend trying this place out!
Omg!!!! Amazing breakfast in East Sac!!! I thought Los Gatos cafe in LG (uptown and downtown) didn't have a possible relative until Orphan. If you think you know the ultimate breakfast place in Sac, you need to head to Orphan. Fabulous plethora of sweet and savory choices priced reasonably where you can dine with a friend and pay less than $35 (including tip) for an awesome tasting breakfast. Street parking for two hours is plentiful and establishment is cash or check only.
One of my greatest disappointments in life is a restaurant that doesn't reservations. Unfortunately, Orphan is one of those places. They are also cash/ check only which is def something to consider, especially since i never carry cash anymore. the service was wonderful. they squeezed us in in less than an hour on a late sunday morning for 6 people. cute vibes and love the neighborhood it's located in. they are well know for their rosemary bread, so i obviously had to sample that. it was yummy. it was a brioche style. it actually worked well with the jam, which i wasn't expecting. i had the dragon potatoes which came with rosemary potatoes topped with carnitas, black beans, jack cheese, salsa, tomatoes, scallions & cilantro, served with sour cream, avocado, grilled jalapeños, & two flour tortillas. this was my ideal breakfast dish because it was more lunch adjacent, there weren't eggs, and it had lots of different flavors in it. the carnitas were delicious and really added to the flavor. loved the salsa and the black bean addition. i wish they did smaller tortillas though. we also tried the gluten free pancakes. i was pleasantly surprised by how fluffy they were for being gluten free. perfect amount of sweetness without being overpowering.
My food was really good. I added bananas to their blueberry pancake because I didn't want the other fruit and I got a side of scrambled eggs with cheese and green onions. Their food was so good and fresh, you can really taste the quality. I wish they had non pork protein options like turkey bacon, chicken apple sausage or any poultry breakfast sausage. I'm shocked with it being 2025 some places still don't have non pork /non red meat options with so many people being vegan or vegetarian now. However my service was great- the food was fire and I loved the berry compote/jam and my homegirls potatoes and toast was delicious. This place is cash only so fyi and parking can be a little tough. I've been wanting to try Orphan for years and somehow never got around to it, turns out I've really been missing out! We arrived on a Saturday around 10:00 a.m. and were quoted a 30 minute wait for a party of three. I appreciated how accurate they were with the wait time; our table was ready right at 10:30. Considering how busy it was, the customer service was excellent. After looking over the menu, I went with the Two Plus, which comes with two pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I upgraded the pancakes to the blueberry cornmeal pancakes, and I'm so glad I did. The portion sizes were huge. My scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, not overdone at all. The pancakes were massive but surprisingly light and not too heavy; I could only finish one because of the size. The bacon was cooked just right- crispy with a slight chew. Overall, I would highly recommend Orphan for the quality of food, reasonable prices, and great service. It's a perfect brunch spot, especially if you plan to stroll the neighborhood or walk around McKinley Park afterward. .
My children brought me here for brunch to celebrate my 50th birthday. This was my first time and let me tell you they did not disappoint. I've read reviews that the wait might be long and it's always super packed. We must of came on a good day because we literally waited 10 minutes. I ordered the blueberry cornmeal pancakes (not pictured) and they were so yummy. I added 2 eggs over hard and bacon. It was a lot of food that I wasn't able to finish it and I took it home. We also ordered dragon potatoes, artichoke scramble, avocado scramble, steak and potatoes, naked pancakes, and latin breakfast. My family enjoyed every bite! Our waitress kept checking on us and making sure we were okay. She was friendly and always had a smile on her face. I wish I would of asked her name. The place is small but cozy. Love the decor and seating z we were sat in the corner by the window. Such a cute little spot. Oh and make sure you bring cash because they don't except cards but they do have an atm machine.

Was taken to Orphan as a surprise for the first time this morning and we were seated immediately upon entering. The staff is very cordial and fairly attentive, it has a great ambience, very calm and homey. I loved everything we ordered and my Gluten Free blueberry cornmeal pancakes were AMAZING. I actually think they might be my favorite pancakes now!! I wasn't a huge fan of the Rosemary potatoes even though I was told they were one of their most popular sides. I also felt like the New Zealand tropical iced tea was rather drab. I am really glad that we picked Orphan House for breakfast this morning! Side note- Parking nearby is super confusing, so I recommend hiking up your pants and making the walk! read more

I don't get to come here as often as I'd like, but everytime I visit, the food and service is always on point. It's always busy but I never feel rushed. I usually go for the Papas Loco, Breakfast tamales, or Platos Verde, but everything I've tried has been good. There are good options noted for gluten free which is great. Today I got the tamales and a single order of the blueberry cornmeal pancakes (I like that your can order a half order and pancakes can also be ordered gluten free). The pancake was so good. My friends got the Avocado scramble and the French toast and they loved their food as well. Great local favorite. They're open for breakfast and lunch and be sure to come early on weekends or expect a wait. They have a small parking lot but it's mostly street parking. read more

Pancakes. If you love pancakes, this spot! Called "Naked Cakes". 3 buttermilk pancakes. So simple, but I really be craving these pancakes at times. So soft and scrumptious. Just a simple pleasant sweet breakfast meal. Now, let me tell you about the Dragon Potato's. And it's not just a simple potato dish. It's latin style with juicy carnitas, black beans and fresh pico de gallo and a side of tortillas. Make sure to add a sunny side up egg to make your own breakfast tacos! Prepare to eat, because it is a PLATE! You Definitely get your money's worth. The vibe is super cute, indoor & outdoor seating, they do community style seating as well if you don't mind that. 20 minutes wait for a table then a 50 minute wait for food. Our server did come by to apologize for the wait 2 minutes before the food came out. The curry was nothing special and I would not order again. The rancheros had good flavor but the tortillas are oddly very chewy. The large pile of cilantro as a garnish was a bit much as a sprinkling of cilantro would have been edible. Our server stated she was going to remove my companion drink from the check due to the wait but on the end we were charged. The service here was so kind and timely (shout out to our waiter for taking into account that it was my birthday today!) if there's one thing I love in this world, it's classic breakfast, and this place hit the mark! Been wanting to try this place for a long time now. They are always packed so we decided to come at opening time which is 7am. The staff are attentive and nice. Ordered the roast beef hash with a side of naked pancake. Yum!!! I was not disappointed. We also ordered a light roast Ethiopian coffee bean. Outdoor seating available. No reservations-first come first serve basis. When we went there on a friday, we got to pick our seats. Happy to finally try Orphan! read more

After being unable to get in due to a long wait time last fall, we decided to stop by during opening time on a Friday. Even got to park on the 4 slot lot (?). Got our choice of seats inside and proceeded to ask our pleasant server where the beans were. She guided me to the counter where the bags of java and I got a pound of light roast Ethiopian. Kinda dissapointed that the bag didn't have a valve for a longer shelf life, but it was roasted at the beginning of the week, according to her. The inside probably sits 50, but they do have a patio for those who prefer the sounds of morning traffic with their meals. We got two complimentary cups of the same roast. Mine with a side of milk and my wife's with a side of cream. We shared the $20 Roast Beef Hash with the rosemary bread and a side of $6.50 Naked Cake (should've gotten the Savory Cake). Too much rosemary potatoes and a small portion of beef. Got out by 7:45 with 4 parties waiting for their breakfast. Not too crowded yet. Glad we were able to experience Orphan. read more

4 stars for decent food but great prices and ambiance! The cornmeal pancake was ok. We didn't love it but it was definitely a different take. The breakfast burrito was also good but nothing special. What we loved was the ambiance of the outside seating. Very cute and cozy. Service was great and our server was very attentive despite them being very busy. I definitely recommend for anyone looking for an affordable, casual brunch spot! read more

Parking can definitely be an issue, but I found parking a block and half away on a Sunday. We sat outside and they gave us water, it was hot out so we asked for lemon to add and ice which made this much better! The service was decently quick and overall good. They don't have ketchup or hot sauce, just salsa and their jam is mixed berry which was an issue for me since I'm allergic to blackberry. The one thing I noticed about their menu is a lot of options do not include meat unless you add it. I got an avocado scramble and added bacon on the side. Their breakfast potatoes were delicious as well as the home made rosemary bread. My scramble was a little bland. I don't love that they are cash only. Good option for vegetarians. This place has absolutely amazing food and is super accommodating to any dietary needs!! Traveling is pretty hard with food restrictions, but this place made me feel like I could comfortably eat out, and have a good time too!! The outdoor seating area was lovely, and my husband and I really enjoyed our time!! Definitely recommend, btw their rosemary potatoes are to die for! read more

I would normally recommend this breakfast place as a 10/10. But our last experience had me questioning whether we come back. Food came out and all seemed fresh except the rosemary bread and blueberry cornmeal pancakes. Those were premade and were sitting in the kitchen waiting to be plated. My husbands food had a hair on the omelette and about 6-7 bites into my meal, I also noticed a hair on my potatoes. They brought us replacement items (not replacement meals) and did not seem overly apologetic nor did any shift leader or manager come by to apologize or ensure everything was going well. The extra mile in this situation would have been to take care of a portion of the bill (even a few dollars) but we were given our check and that was it. High potential, poor delivery and clearly someone in the kitchen needs a hairnet. As a result, likely won't be back. read more

This has been a spot I've been wanting to try for awhile now, and I'm so happy I finally got the chance to stop by and enjoy a yummy breakfast with a friend. Arriving at noon on a Sunday I thought the half hour wait wasn't bad, and parking was easy enough since it's a residential and lots of spaces surrounding. The way the restaurant is decorated on the outside makes it blend in beautifully with all the other little homes. You can tell this place is a just a home converted into a restaurant so it's fun to look at the unique layout. Very cozy and "home" feel atmosphere. Staff was kind and had a relaxed mellow attitude. Very earthy and hipster. (I mean that in the highest form of flattery) But let's get down to the whole point of any food place review - the food. Was very good, but also very not that good. Bread and potatoes were delicious, my potatoes had the right mixture of crispy and soft texture. The rosemary bread was yummy. However the steak was over cooked and tough. And the eggs were really lackluster. BUT the house made horse radish was delicious. BUT BUT like other reviewers stated, they don't have ketchup lol. My friend was a bit disappointed. I think their was enough flavor and good quality in my food that I am curious to try other options. Maybe I didn't get the right thing for me to really wow my experience. I do plan to return, and I do plan to give this place another chance because my meal was delicious enough to make me feel interested in coming back. Plus the prices are really decent. This is the number one place in Sacramento I recommend to friends & family who are looking for a great breakfast spot. I've been eating here regularly since 2018 and what I love most about Orphan is their consistency and simplicity. Other than the specials, the menu doesn't really change. So once you find something you love, you can always come back and expect it to be there. The food is consistently delicious, high quality, and presented well. Little details like the fruit being fresh, plating being clean, and the garnishing looking intentional goes a long, long way for me. My go-to order here is the avocado scramble. I usually substitute the bread for fruit. Cash only, but they have a convenient ATM. Recommend going early, like before 10. Brunch rush can make for a longer wait. read more

We came in ona busy Saturday lunch, I really liked the fact that if they are busy you can order and sit at the communal table. The service was fast and our server was nice. The food as also very tasty you can tell it's fresh and good ingredients. Would definitely come back again if I had the chance. The stake was a bit under cooked I asked for medium rare but you could tell it was cooked then chopped up because I still got many raw bites. Would have been better if they cut it then cooked. read more

Do they serve organic eggs?
I don't know. But the service was not good and they only take cash. There is a ATM machine in the restaurant because of this issue. We had I hopes.
Do they take reservations?
No. When I tried to get reservations for April 17 for our party of 7 I was told that would not be possible as they are first come, first served. Know that up to 6 people can sit together but for us, we were seated in 2 groups of 3 and 4 in close…

Yes, outdoor dining is available and you are given the option of inside or outside dining.
How much of the menu is organic?
Do they do reservations or Call Ahead seating?
They don't. On the weekends you have to be prepared to wait. They do however let you call in an order to go!
