A family favorite! Things to know before you go: - only accepts cash and checks! - no ketchup! Favorites - Dragon potatoes: carnitas with potatoes (tip: ask for extra crispy). Includes fresh tortillas, sour cream, cilantro, and black beans (I recommend them on the side if you want to keep the carnitas and potatoes crispy). - Breakfast Tamales: I really enjoy this dish for a lighter fare. Fresh green salsa and sweet corn flavor. Includes tortillas and sour cream (I also swap out the beans for crispy potatoes) - Rosemary Bread: get it as a side or as a loaf! Excellent toasted - There speciality pancakes: the savory cake is bacon and jalapeño. The blueberry cornmeal pancakes are my favorite for a lightly sweet treat. The banana blackberry is also my daughter's favorite. All three are great! Reminder... come with cash!
This brunch spot was highly recommended so I made my way over to East Sacramento to try it out. I typically am not a person to wait in line but since I'm not familiar with the area, I didn't feel like trying to figure out a different place to go. The wait was only about 20 minutes, but I chose to wait for an indoor table because I was a little chilly so it ended up being slightly longer. I ordered the Rosemary breakfast and asked for my eggs, scrambled with cheese. It came out looking so good, and they actually made like a little omelette with my eggs and cheese, it was just lovely and fluffy. The rosemary bread with the butter and the blackberry purée was unreal. I could drink a cup of that purée. I was a bit disappointed in the potatoes because the salt level was astronomical. I'm someone who loves salt and it seemed like all the really crispy spots were saturated, burn my tongue level of salt. I was going to say something to the waitress, but she didn't come back until I was almost done eating. The coffee they use was from a local roaster and I went for a light roast pour over coffee and it was phenomenal. Beautifully nuanced flavors. Parking around here is rough. I parked in the neighborhood on the street behind the restaurant and I did not see any no parking signs but got a parking ticket anyway. I even looked before I left, but I saw nothing! When I got back and saw the ticket I was like WTH. I finally found the resident only parking sign about a block away on the other side of the driveway on that part of the street. Bummer.
I have officially been here now a few times for breakfast/brunch and I am so glad it was put on my radar by friends and family. Orphan is an adorable and delicious brunch spot in East Sac only minutes (literally a two minute drive, 10 minute walk) from McKinley Park. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor (covered) seating, has a very small parking lot (3 spots), and is cash only. They have an ATM inside and the prices on the menu already include tax. Parking can be a little difficult on the streets due to two hour limits and certain areas requiring a permit, but we've always found a spot nearby. There also can be a wait when it's busy, 20-30 minutes. The food is so good here, very filling portions, and comes out rather quickly. So far with my family we've tried the dragon potatoes, breakfast tamales, grande breakfast burrito, soy chorizo breakfast, and naked cakes. Everything has been delicious, I don't think you can order anything wrong here. Our favorite has been the dragon potatoes because of the rich flavorful carnitas! The service has also been great, the staff were very friendly and accommodating. People here also bring their dogs and are sat outside. Definitely recommend trying this place out!
Omg!!!! Amazing breakfast in East Sac!!! I thought Los Gatos cafe in LG (uptown and downtown) didn't have a possible relative until Orphan. If you think you know the ultimate breakfast place in Sac, you need to head to Orphan. Fabulous plethora of sweet and savory choices priced reasonably where you can dine with a friend and pay less than $35 (including tip) for an awesome tasting breakfast. Street parking for two hours is plentiful and establishment is cash or check only.
One of my greatest disappointments in life is a restaurant that doesn't reservations. Unfortunately, Orphan is one of those places. They are also cash/ check only which is def something to consider, especially since i never carry cash anymore. the service was wonderful. they squeezed us in in less than an hour on a late sunday morning for 6 people. cute vibes and love the neighborhood it's located in. they are well know for their rosemary bread, so i obviously had to sample that. it was yummy. it was a brioche style. it actually worked well with the jam, which i wasn't expecting. i had the dragon potatoes which came with rosemary potatoes topped with carnitas, black beans, jack cheese, salsa, tomatoes, scallions & cilantro, served with sour cream, avocado, grilled jalapeños, & two flour tortillas. this was my ideal breakfast dish because it was more lunch adjacent, there weren't eggs, and it had lots of different flavors in it. the carnitas were delicious and really added to the flavor. loved the salsa and the black bean addition. i wish they did smaller tortillas though. we also tried the gluten free pancakes. i was pleasantly surprised by how fluffy they were for being gluten free. perfect amount of sweetness without being overpowering.
Had to come try the blueberry cornmeal pancakes! They are gluten free and taste really good!! Not as desne or grainy as I expected - rather they are light and fluffy with lots of fresh blueberries. The coffee featured is Black Sails Coffee (great strong diner style coffee). My pal had steak and eggs (also good!). Definitely a great neighborhood diner. Only caveat is parking is limited in the parking lot and in street parking so avoid peak times.
My children brought me here for brunch to celebrate my 50th birthday. This was my first time and let me tell you they did not disappoint. I've read reviews that the wait might be long and it's always super packed. We must of came on a good day because we literally waited 10 minutes. I ordered the blueberry cornmeal pancakes (not pictured) and they were so yummy. I added 2 eggs over hard and bacon. It was a lot of food that I wasn't able to finish it and I took it home. We also ordered dragon potatoes, artichoke scramble, avocado scramble, steak and potatoes, naked pancakes, and latin breakfast. My family enjoyed every bite! Our waitress kept checking on us and making sure we were okay. She was friendly and always had a smile on her face. I wish I would of asked her name. The place is small but cozy. Love the decor and seating z we were sat in the corner by the window. Such a cute little spot. Oh and make sure you bring cash because they don't except cards but they do have an atm machine.
Nice little café tucked into an East Sacramento neighborhood. Aside from keeping an eye on parking and remembering it's cash only, there's really nothing to worry about. The café offers outdoor seating and a surprisingly interesting menu with plenty of delicious options. I'm not sure what they're doing to their potatoes, but they were seriously good -- easily a standout. A charming neighborhood spot that's definitely worth a visit. BB
I wanted a nice place to have breakfast before my flight and Orphan didn't disappoint. Parking is a little rough, but I parked in the neighborhood and walked in. It's a cash only place but they have a no fee ATM, so all good. I had the breakfast tamales and a side of bacon and everything was delicious. If you're in the area, check it out!
Super good spot for breakfast food. They only take cash or check, but we saw this on the website before going. There is an ATM inside if needed. The iced coffee was super good, the dragon potatoes also delicious! Sausage and eggs were good as well. The steak and eggs was ok, but not as good as other items. They make their own bread, that was delicious! We got a side and it came with absolutely delicious jam! Photo does not do it justice. Service was pretty good - they were busy but we got seated and served in a reasonable time. Ambiance was cafe style and buzzing with a positive energy from people enjoying brunch (and a birthday group). They only serve breakfast on weekends, so not sure what lunch menu is like. We all enjoyed the meal and I'll definitely come back if in the area. Recommend.
My food was really good. I added bananas to their blueberry pancake because I didn't want the other fruit and I got a side of scrambled eggs with cheese and green onions. Their food was so good and fresh, you can really taste the quality. I wish they had non pork protein options like turkey bacon, chicken apple sausage or any poultry breakfast sausage. I'm shocked with it being 2025 some places still don't have non pork /non red meat options with so many people being vegan or vegetarian now. However my service was great- the food was fire and I loved the berry compote/jam and my homegirls potatoes and toast was delicious. This place is cash only so fyi and parking can be a little tough. I've been wanting to try Orphan for years and somehow never got around to it, turns out I've really been missing out! We arrived on a Saturday around 10:00 a.m. and were quoted a 30 minute wait for a party of three. I appreciated how accurate they were with the wait time; our table was ready right at 10:30. Considering how busy it was, the customer service was excellent. After looking over the menu, I went with the Two Plus, which comes with two pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I upgraded the pancakes to the blueberry cornmeal pancakes, and I'm so glad I did. The portion sizes were huge. My scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, not overdone at all. The pancakes were massive but surprisingly light and not too heavy; I could only finish one because of the size. The bacon was cooked just right- crispy with a slight chew. Overall, I would highly recommend Orphan for the quality of food, reasonable prices, and great service. It's a perfect brunch spot, especially if you plan to stroll the neighborhood or walk around McKinley Park afterward. .

So this is a quality place with quality food and service. We showed up before the restaurant was open and every table had a menu and place set. "Anywhere where there is a menu" to seat yourself. Our server was top notch and made some great recommendations. We went back for a second trip and this is by far the best breakfast in town. The blackberry banana pancakes were over the top good. Fluffy and fruity. The savory cakes had bacon cooked in and were down right crispy joy. Avocado was fresh, syrup was real, and the jam is homemade. They don't have catchup and only accept cash or check for payment. Don't be surprised as this is just how it is. Everything was just perfectly prepared and we will be back next time in town! read more

I was fortunate to get there when it wasn't busy! Had the cornmeal pancake and devoured it! My server was professional kind, and knew exactly when to come to the table. I was alone and reading a book at a quiet table and she could tell when I was not needing any help which I appreciated so I could keep on reading and eating. read more

My brother and his wife that were visiting from out of state were the ones to introduce me to this place and I'm so bummed out that I didn't find it sooner. This place was delicious! Cash only. Updating my review- I've been here a couple more times since my first initial visit here and I've become to love this place. I love how healthy their menu is as well as the taste. Service is definitely better than before. There is now an outdoor seating area, definitely helps with the wait time. Their style of breakfast consists of more cheese, eggs, beans and potatoes, not so much meat. If you would like meat, you would have to order a side of bacon or sausages which are both very delicious. They have fresh squeezed apple, orange and grapefruit juice. Soooooo goooodd. For a sweet breakfast dish, they have regular buttermilk pancakes that come with berries, blueberry cornmeal pancakes and Orphans French Toast. For a lighter breakfast, there's also oatmeal, granola yogurt and fruit bowl. If you want a good breakfast house that is also health conscious, this is the place!!! read more

I'm not big on bfast food, but this will entice me to go more often now. Would definitely recommend it if you're looking for sweet and savory, but opt out of the jalapeños if you can't handle heat. I love this place and have been many times before. Normally I get the artichoke scramble but today tried their special mushroom scramble and it was delicious! We also got a single blueberry cornmeal pancake, also delicious, but I do wish it had a stronger cornmeal taste. The service is quick and the atmosphere is nice. I usually sit outside. This was my first time here and I would definitely return. Food was great, I had the Avocado Scramble which was LOADED with avocado. I mean it was mostly avocado with a little egg but I love avocado so it worked for me. I LOVED the rosemary toast and potatoes, so freaking good. It's definitely a little noisy inside when packed so keep that in mind, however they also have outdoor patio seating which looked nice. Service was definitely a little on the slow side this day but friendly. Lots of vegetarian options on the menu. Cash only but they do have an atm. read more

Yummy! We came here because the wait was too long at another breakfast place and we were seated pretty quick in comparison, in about 30 minutes for a party of two! The staff was friendly and nice. However, they are CASH or CHECK ONLY!!! Thankfully I had enough cash but it can be inconvenient! They have a free ATM inside though, apparently. I sat outside and it was really cold because they didn't have a heater out where I was, which was unfortunate but it's alright! We got one single hot cocoa pancake instead of the three, which made it half off. Kinda unfortunate that it couldn't just be 1/3 of the price when we're getting 1/3 of the portion! I was also disappointed that I couldn't substitute the beans in my burrito for two pork sausages, since they're the same price on the side menu. I'm not sure why that is so I ended up just having to pay normal price without the beans plus the price of the sausages. I am a fan!!! The food is Good Fresh & Healthy. Not much processed which is a plus and not overly salted and or seasoned. Great vibes and service was on point. It's definitely a local favorite. Honestly several years back I went to this restaurant and did not care for it since it has healthier options. Now since I've changed my eating I love this food. Found this spot after searching breakfast spots in Sacramento... not the best experience. A few thoughts: -It's located on the corner of a busy street across from a school, no parking besides street parking in a residential neighborhood... wasn't too fond of that. -Cash only. There was a sign on the door that said Cash only, but they also provide an ATM for you to get cash from. I don't carry cash so this was a little odd. -Limited menu: the menu only had regular coffee and juices pretty much. I like mochas and cappuccinos and more cafe type of drinks so I had to settle on some orange juice. $4ish for a glass of orange juice was a bit much in my opinion. -I had ordered some cinnamon roll French toast, and it was stale. The bacon and eggs we ordered were also cold and stale. I will not go back to this place, but customer service was awesome! The cute girl who greeted us at entry was great. read more

I was meeting a girlfriend for lunch but she ended up inviting other girls so we had a girls lunch. We had a good time and service was great. We sat outside in the shade and had a time. Please note the restaurant is check or cash only so be prepared and if not they have an ATM inside for you to use. I had the avocado scramble add chorizo with salsa on the side. Instead of potatoes and toast I had spinach and fruit. The food was okay just needed a bit more seasoning. With a dash of salt and pepper, hot sauce and salsa I was good. read more

Been wanting to try Orphan for the longest time and in excited to say it did not disappoint! Ever since it opened I've heard great things about it but the long lines and cash only have gotten in the way multiple times! The line/wait is particularly bad on the weekends but we also tried to come on a Friday and we're greeted with a 45 min long wait so we finally were able to get a spot on a Tuesday morning around 11 AM within 5-10 minutes. They do also have an ATM if you absolutely don't have cash. Regarding the food, we had the avocado scramble (wowza, so much better than i expected, avocado mixed into the scramble which was soft fluffy and everything I love about eggs with a bit of avocado with each bite), soyrizo scramble (delicious, flavorful), French toast (perfectly soaked in a custard with a crispy top and berries to match), and the jalapeño pancakes (little bit hot and a little bit sweet, unique and tasty). All in all, definitely recommend coming here and will for sure be back..though it just might take some time to have another weekday off since I'm not looking to spend my weekend waiting an hour in line (but if that's your thing, go for it!) read more

It was nice that this place was open on New Year's Day but this also meant there was a wait and I don't think it was worth it. The food was really bland and the menu overall caters more to vegetarians. Super basic overall. Service is fine but they also don't serve ketchup only salsa just to be problematic which is annoying. Visited Orphan Breakfast House for a weekend brunch and had their Blueberry Cornmeal Pancakes and Rosemary Breakfast. The food was good, solid but nothing that particularly stood out as extraordinary. The standout for me were the potatoes - they were perfectly seasoned and cooked to just the right texture. The ambiance of the place adds to the dining experience; it's quite charming and has a welcoming vibe. It does get pretty busy on weekends, so that's something to keep in mind. Overall, a pleasant spot for a casual brunch but don't expect culinary fireworks. read more

Worth the 40 min wait- was even a holiday! Atmosphere is fun and inviting. Rosemary potatoes were amazing and loved the crunchy bits. My husband had the Denver scramble, I am not usually a fan but it was delicious! The couple next to us ordered the strawberry cheesecake pancakes looked incredible! We will be going back! read more

I've been here many times and they have never disappointed. I really love the environment and the food is very tasteful. The service is really quick as well but it does take long for seating sometimes due to it being a small business. I would recommend to anyone who wants to try out a new spot in the area! We stopped by on a Thursday around noon. Decided to sit on the patio. Our server was helpful and attentive just the right way. We appreciated this as it made the delicious food all the more enjoyable. This was my first visit here. I had the Verde breakfast plate with eggs over-easy. It was delivered delicious and prepared very well. I look forward to returning here in the future and introducing friends to their excellent breakfasts. read more
My 2 friends and I came here for breakfast around opening and were seated immediately! The inside is fairly small so if you want to dine in, come early or expect a wait but the inside was decorated very nicely with plants everywhere! I ordered the breakfast burritos (it comes with two) and it came with a side of beans, salsa, and sour cream! I... usually don't like beans but these beans were SO good and although the food looked plain, it was seasoned well and so delicious! My friend mentioned after how she's tried a lot of salsa before, but this place has had the best salsa she's had! Our server was also super nice and they checked up on us often! I've visited Orphan twice so far, and overall I think the food is here pretty average compared to other brunch spots in Sac. Note: This review is only for savory items. I have not tried their pancakes, which do look good. Pros: -The ambiance is nice and quaint -Service is good -Ingredients are fresh -Eggs are perfectly cooked Cons: -Parking nearby is only available on Sundays -The rosemary bread barely tastes like rosemary, kinda disappointing -Sunrise drink was pretty basic -Blueberry & Blackberry was okay. Tasted like a smoothie you can make at home The Roast beef hash barely had any potatoes...I got a line of potatoes more than a hash. The steak was marinated well, but was very chewy. Not worth $20 imo. My first visit here I got one of their specials, a breakfast sandwich with avocado and rosemary potatoes. I got much more potatoes and they basically made a cheese omelet and folded it into the sandwich. I would say it's good depending on what you order. read more

Do they serve organic eggs?
I don't know. But the service was not good and they only take cash. There is a ATM machine in the restaurant because of this issue. We had I hopes.
Do they take reservations?
No. When I tried to get reservations for April 17 for our party of 7 I was told that would not be possible as they are first come, first served. Know that up to 6 people can sit together but for us, we were seated in 2 groups of 3 and 4 in close…
Are you open for outside dining these days?
Yes, outdoor dining is available and you are given the option of inside or outside dining.
How much of the menu is organic?
Do they do reservations or Call Ahead seating?
They don't. On the weekends you have to be prepared to wait. They do however let you call in an order to go!
