Chocolate Chip Cookie
Kristina I.

The perfect chocolate chip cookies exist! These cookies had perfectly chewy centers and crisp/ gritty exterior. It had a delicious nutty flavor which was more pronounced than the typical browned butter nuttiness. The combination of the bitter Valhrona dark chocolate and sweeter milk chocolate chips balanced out the cookie very well. The rainbow cookies were not great - they were just wannabe rainbow cookies. You can't just call a cookie a rainbow cookie because it looks like one. Some things should remain traditional, this is one of them. Traditional rainbow cookies are made with almond paste, jam, and chocolate. There is no almond paste in this cookie which completely threw off the texture. There is a layer of marzipan in these cookies which in my opinion destroyed the balance of the cookie - far too sweet and oddly textured. The cake layer is just regular cake with food coloring instead of the soft/ moist almond frangipane-like cake. The cookies were beautiful, but were very disappointing. Service was quick and friendly.

I have heard about this Jewish bakery called Orwashers a while back from a video about the best chocolate chip cookie in NYC. Therefore, when I happen to be nearby one early morning, I walked in and ordered a bunch of things to try. Everything looked and smelled so good, so I kept getting more. Lol Here is everything my friends and I tried that morning and our thoughts. Chocolate Chip Cookie (8/10) - Maybe not one of the best I ever had, but very solid. It was a bit too hard, but 7-8 seconds in the microwave made it perfect, crunchy edges with a slightly chewy center. Morning Bun (7.5/10) - Good crispy crust with a light cinnamon apple filling. Nothing mind blowing, but quite a decent breakfast option. Almond Croissant (7/10) - Over baked and somewhat too crispy, this might be better on a different day. The marzipan lacked a strong almond taste. Dubai Chocolate Croissant (9/10) - Favorite item from the shop. The dark chocolate drizzle on top of the croissant paired very well with the crispy pistachio phyllo. What a combo! Delicious! Rainbow Cookie (6/10) - Dry and nothing special. Black & White Cookie (6.5/10) - Decent, but cookie was a bit dry. Raspberry Rugelach (6.5/10) - Average. Had better. Green Olive & Za'atar Stick (7.5/10) - I would have preferred more olive flavor, but the bread was very soft and fluffy. Overall, there were some misses, but I really enjoyed a few of the items that I would absolutely come back and get again.

Soooo good! All of their breads and other baked goods looked so delicious that it was hard to pick just a few... but we landed on the powdered strawberry jelly donut (fluffy and so flavorful) and the chocolate & pistachio croissant (the filling was crunchy and reminiscent of Dubai chocolate -- very creative and yummy!). The staff were super nice as well -- great little place to pop in for a quick pastry, or to pick up bread, babka, cookies and other goodies to bring home!

This is an old school bakery since 1916 with a sizable selection of baked goods with friendly service. I finally happened to be in the neighborhood and tried a few pastries. The jelly donuts are fresh and filled at time of ordering, but they are overly encrusted in sugar which makes them too sweet. You get to choose from three jellies to have them filled - strawberry, apricot, or cherry, which is a nice touch. The raspberry rugelach is very good but the sunflower seeds are unnecessary and distracting. No complaints with the chocolate rugelach. The pistachio schnecken is a very nice cinnamon roll rolled in cherries and dipped in extra nutty flavor. The baked goods are all decent but don't warrant you going out of your way to visit.

Can't say that I agree with Infatuation's chocolate cookie rating #5, as my cookie felt like it was way too bitter for it to be good. Good crisp and not too dense. Cookie is by weight--two rainbow cookies came out to $3.xx. I enjoyed the rainbow cookies way more than the chocolate chip. Staff was super friendly!

Black and White cookie

As a NY visitor, I've been trying to get to Orwasher's in the City for a long time to try their Black and White cookie. The Orwasher's in Long Island (Roslyn Heights) only sells mini B&Ws. What truly makes or breaks a B&W is the cookie base. This cookie had the right coloring (yellowish), softness and thickness. On top of that, the white (vanilla) had the ideal taste and was not too hard or soft AND the black (chocolate) was rich and super flavorful. Orwasher's certainly delivered. Their B&Ws are served in a thin, tight plastic bag, which keeps the cookie fresh and doesn't ruin the cookie when it's removed. The woman at the counter was super nice and helpful as well.

I stopped by because I was craving a sweet treat and wanted to try a "top tier chocolate chip cookie in nyc". The cookie was huge and was crisp and not too thick or thin!

Cheese and cherry danish

Orwashers is one of my favorites! They have the best breads, pastries, cakes, bagels, etc. Often when I go there, there are some samples out so that's also a nice treat! Lately the samples have been pieces of babka or chocolate muffins- you can't go wrong. I tried something different on this trip, the cherry cheese danish. It was one of my favorite things they have. It tasted like it had a fresh cherry compote and a sweet cheese filling. The danish tasted like a buttery and flaky croissant. It was very satisfying. I also love their chocolate chip scones, any type of rugelach, and the chocolate babka. I honestly wasn't so fond of the viral pistachio and kataifi filled croissant. I felt the filling was too sweet. Don't miss a trip to Orwashers! Especially this location.

I do not come here often as it is out of my way a little bit. But when I do come here I am greeted with the smell of fresh baked bread. It smells wonderful! This store is located on a quiet upper east side street, but since they have other locations in the city it is well known. Usually on weekends it can get pretty crowded! They have no indoor seating and no benches or tables outside either so it is a take out place. When I have came here in the past I was not always greeted by nice staff. That may be another reason I do not come here often. But yesterday when I went in to try a coffee of a company that they sell I wanted a bagel with cream cheese. I did tell them I was allergic to fish as I know they have lox and maybe other types of fish spreads. The lady who was helping me told me there would be cross contamination as there have been lox on the cutting board where they would be slicing my bagel. So, I said forget it I did not want to risk anything. She was nice about it and was apologetic but, I find it a bit weird that they couldn't find a way to do this. I would have assumed they had maybe another clean cutting board? But maybe not. Anyways, this has turned me away again from coming back here though, as I said earlier the bread smells delicious and fresh but just is not the place for me.

This is one of the best bakeries! They're a New York City institution since 1916. The founders were immigrants from Hungary. Service was excellent, friendly and fast. It's very popular. Everything was clean. It smells delicious! The baked goods, the bread, cookies everything is high quality! They have a location on the upper west side, too.

Best babka
Katja K.

Trust me on this: get the chocolate babka. Don't even think about the price or its size--it's the best babka we've ever had, and yes, we devoured it with ease. It's so incredible we even gifted it to friends. This is hands down the most chocolatey, perfectly baked treat ever. Their other items, like the cookies and bread, are just as amazing. Plus, the staff is super kind, making the whole experience even better!

The orange has a base made of chocolate Rice Krispies. All of them have more fruity filling than the mousse. They are very fragile. I recommend eating there if you can. It has strawberriy jelly and it was a mess. The orange one was almost ruined too. The mango has some diced mangoes. I devoured three of them instantly. Definitely come back to try more.

There was no place to sit down because of how busy it was but the staff kept the line moving quick enough. The place still seemed reasonably stocked with their desserts and treats, despite the late afternoon time that I arrived. I ordered 4 different treats to go and they're packed in small box individually. Unfortunately, they didn't quite stay intact during my trek back to my hotel and were tumbled around in the boxes. Nonetheless, the taste and flavors held up well and even after a few days in the fridge. The yuzu daisy has this vivid pastel yellow-pink base and adorable gelatinous yellow gem atop a white flower. The yuzu gives a subtle infusion of tart that is balanced out by the light delicate skin texture of the rest. Sitting atop a thin round rice crispy. I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

Today I decided to make a special trip to go here to grab a few goodies. I forgot how small the place was and how low the ceilings were. That wasn't an issue though. The place was nice and cakes were stacked neatly. What was surprising to me is that they don't have any cookies laid in the front display. It's all placed in the back almost hidden. I was deeply disappointed with their cookie selection. It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.

I had never heard of the place before, but I was happy to give it a try -- and I'm so glad I did. From the moment you walk in, the experience feels special. The store has two beautiful double doors that create such a grand entrance, and once inside, you immediately feel the energy. The place was bustling with people, and everyone seemed happy and excited -- from the customers to the team behind the counter and the baristas. The cookie case was overflowing with so many amazing choices that it was hard to decide! I ended up getting the Rocky Road cookie, a Double Chocolate Chip cookie, a Two Chip Chocolate Chip cookie, and a blueberry muffin to enjoy for breakfast the next morning. The service was absolutely impeccable, and everyone I interacted with was warm, friendly, and delightful. When I got home, I had half of the Rocky Road cookie with a cup of tea, and it was incredible. The cookie was large and chunky but still perfectly enjoyable -- not heavy or overwhelming. It literally melted in my mouth. The chocolate was rich and smooth, and every bite was just delicious. The next morning, I tried the blueberry muffin, and it was just as impressive. It was light and airy, not overly sweet like many blueberry muffins can be. It truly felt like a breakfast pastry. The blueberries tasted fresh and burst with flavor in every bite. I will definitely be back for more cookies. This was such a wonderful find, and I'm so happy my coworker introduced me to this place!

We walked into a simple and welcoming space where the smell of freshly baked cookies made it clear why it has become such a popular stop. The bakery has a warm, inviting energy, with a steady flow of customers moving through the counter and the open kitchen adding a layer of engagement as we watched the cookies being prepared, making the experience feel more like a classic bakery visit rather than just grabbing a dessert. The main reason to visit is their famous chocolate chip walnut cookie. We ordered one and found it had a crisp exterior with a warm, dense center that gave it the signature Levain texture. The combination of chocolate and walnuts creates a balance between sweetness and richness, although the cookies are definitely on the sweeter and heavier side, and the size makes it feel more like a substantial treat than a light snack. Their other flavors, including dark chocolate and seasonal options, give more variety if you want to try something beyond the original, and we found the dark chocolate version offered a deeper, less sweet profile that appealed to those who prefer a more intense chocolate flavor. The size of the cookies is part of what makes Levain stand out. One cookie is usually enough to share, especially after a meal, but getting one fresh and warm is the best way to experience the texture. The center stays soft and almost underbaked compared to a traditional cookie, which is what makes it different from most bakeries. Service is usually quick and efficient, even when there is a line, and the shop is more designed for takeout since seating is limited, so it works best as a quick stop while exploring the city. The line can move faster than expected because the menu is focused and the process is straightforward, and the staff handle the steady flow with speed and a friendly demeanor. Levain Bakery is worth trying for anyone looking for a classic NYC dessert experience. The cookies are rich, oversized, and memorable, especially if you enjoy soft and chewy cookies. While the sweetness and size may not be for everyone, it remains one of the most iconic cookie stops in the city, offering a dessert that feels indulgent and unmistakably New York.
