Great breads, donuts, and pastries. Option to slice bread thin or thick. However, sometimes, the bread slicing machine goes down and thick slices are unavailable. Sourdough is always the way to go. The donuts are freshly filled with your jam of choice so it will never get soggy. The raspberry and cream cheese danish/pastry is my favorite sweet treat to get for breakfast. I came here because of a random rainbow cookie craving. They charge their pastries by the pound $27.30/lb. They also have prepackaged half pound containers as well, which are just as fresh as the ones on display. Their rainbow cookies are delicious! Very disappointed that for 45 years I've gotten the same Irish Soda bread from this bakery and this year the changed the recipe without making that know on its website. I ordered multiple loaves of something that wasn't what I expected because they didn't give any proper notice to customers ordering online. On top of that I order 2 large hamentashen 1 poppy and 1 apricot, and without telling me they exchanged my order for boxes of smalls. When I noticed it they didn't apologize for not informing me and just said we are out of large size so we exchanged it. When you place an order for something and pay for it good customer service would be to inform the customer and provide an alternative not just make a decision to change the order to something else without notifying the customer. In some instances that would be called fraud. read more

One of the most authentic bakeries in New York. Original Jewish Bakery. So glad I got to try the Black and White cookie. Very fluffy on the inside. Reminded me of a Madeleine. I lived my Seinfeld fantasy. The sticky bun babka was very unique. I feel like everyone that visits NYC should go to an authentic bakery. It's the thing to do. I also happen to be a fan of pastries so I was excited. I am a big fan of old school traditional places such as this. Sometimes, new school modern places are too much and overhyped. I feel so lucky to have this wonderful bakery in my neighborhood. The almond croissants from Orwasher's rival those I've had in France. They're buttery and airy with the perfect crunch on the first bite. The coffee cake is too sweet for me. I thought the donut was fine but nothing special. This is my absolute favorite bakery on the Upper East Side - it's been an NYC staple for over 100 years! I love to stop by for their Black & White cookies, they're so soft and have the perfect amount of icing. I usually get "minis" (~$2) which are more like a regular cookie size, but they also sell "regular" (~$4.50) ones which are huge! It's a cute environment, and you can even pick your own donut filling. The employees are always so sweet and patient -last time I was there, the woman went out of her way to explain different Passover cakes to another customer and the man working went above and beyond to put a customer's cookies in individual bags because the customer was worried about them touching. So happy to find this cute, friendly, and very delicious neighborhood bakery and cafe. The staff was so nice and attentive. We saw a constant stream of neighborhood people, and you could tell this place is very well loved. The sour dough bagels are unique and were delicious. We both had toasted whole grain with tofu (!) cream cheese. I loved the California bagel, with thick slices of very fresh avocado, plus arugula. My partner had a NY bagel with smoked salmon. The bagel had a perfect crunch, yet also soft on the inside. It is sourdough, so doesn't give you that overly stuffed feeling you get with a "typical" NY bagel. I've had more than one person that has come to visit me, and after tasting my breads, cookies, babka, etc. from Orwashers, they ask me if I would ship them some, across the country! They're that good! The shop is cute, and their backed goods are glorious! But, a couple quick tips... 1). I recommend going earlier in the day, than later. Everything is fresh baked, and they seem to be quite efficient at baking only what they think they will sell that day, so it's usually slim pickings later in the day. 2). Like I said, EVERYTHING is amazing, you really can't go wrong. But if you only try one thing, make it the chocolate babka! Jelly Doughnuts! Fresh piping of jelly into the doughnut with each order. Fun to watch and hungry to take that first bite with jelly oozing out at the corner of my mouth. Yes, I first heard of Orwasher's jelly doughnuts, but once there, I've discovered so much more. Wonderful is their service. Each time trying something new of their freshly baked goods. Came here around 8:30AM on a Wednesday. Not sure if many of the items are worth their price, but they were delicious nonetheless. What we got: Sticky bun babka (5/5) -- WOW. Moist, dense, sticky, buttery, luscious, heavenly bite. This was one of the best baked goods we had the entire trip. I was going to come back before leaving for the airport but didn't have enough time. :( Caramelized Onion Poppy Bialy (4/5) -- Onions were tasty, but the texture of the bread was a little too hard to bite. Good chew and flavor once I was able to rip a piece off. Mini Black/White Cookie (4/5) Raspberry Jelly Donut (4/5) -- Maybe because they are hand-filled, but there were inconsistencies with the jelly-filled donuts. Some donuts had an even distribution of jelly so you got some with each bite whereas others had just one side jam-packed. Other than that, the flavor and texture of the donuts were spot on. Blueberry Jelly Donut (4/5) Strawberry Jelly Donut (4/5) Apricot?? Jelly Donut (4/5) Chocolate Old Fashioned Donut (3/5) -- This donut was a lot lighter than what I prefer in an old fashioned donut, but my brother enjoyed it. The chocolate flavor comes through, standard glaze. Based on the bialy and sticky bun babka, I'd try more of their breads. Donuts are fine if you don't mind the wonky pockets of jelly. This place fell off. This use to be my go to for jelly filled doughnuts but it's just not good anymore. The last few times I went the quality of their products has went downhill. I picked up 6 assorted flavors a couple days ago and they were barely filled and the doughnut itself was stale. I also got a babka which was pretty good but very overpriced ($19). Orwasher's is deadly! This bakery was down the street from where I was staying and I literally came here everyday during my stay. The line generally was at or out the door, but moved fairly quickly. Depending on the day/time, there were 2-4 staff working who were friendly and patient with customers. They were also very helpful and recommended some items. Jelly donuts: chocolate covered donut filled with strawberry jelly. Enjoyed the actual donut itself! It was light and airy. Not super sweet. The strawberry jelly was also good. You could tell it was made fresh. The only thing I didn't like about the jelly donut was how stuffed it was. It was packed with jelly. I mean packed! It was pretty overwhelming. I definitely think only a 1/3 of what was stuffed in the donut would have been sufficient. I'll stick with a plain donut next time. NY breakfast sandwich: Definitely a must when you come to Orwasher's. Generous amount of smoked salmon with dill cream cheese (a tad too much), onions, chives, and lemon zest all stuffed between the bagel of your choice (toasted or not). So good! Loved the addition of lemon zest. The bagel was good and also baked fresh. Chocolate almond croissant: Another must! Probably one of the best I've had. The croissant was buttery and flaky. It was stuffed with just the right amount of almond paste and chocolate. Enjoyed the crunch that the toasted almonds provided to the pastry. So delicious! Chocolate chocolate chip cookie: Grabbed a couple for the road. This cookie was so good! Yet another must at Orwasher's. I loved how it wasn't super sweet. Slightly crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy in the middle. It was baked fresh and contained a good amount of chocolate pieces. The cookie is huge. Definitely enough to share (I wouldn't suggest it, though). Prices are on the higher side for pastries, but worth the price IMO. read more

Is there a long line? Yes. Does delivery sometimes take a while? Yes. Do I care? ABSOLUTELY NOT. There are very few things I think are worth patiently waiting for on a weekend, but Orwashers is def one of them. They are incredible. Where do I start? The NY sandwich is hands down the BEST lox/chive bagel sandwich I have ever had in my entire life. Delicious. The lox melts in your mouth, and the bagels are always perfect. Somehow they manage to toast the bagels without melting the cream cheese. I have no idea how. Magic. The donuts. Oh my lord those donuts. FRESH donuts stuffed with homemade jam. I don't think it gets much better than that. Heavenly and amazing. I would wait on an eternal line for them. Finally, to cap it all off...the coffee. Their cold brew is the best I've had. The staff serving me kept repeatedly asking me what I got even after he had served me, which was a little odd and made for a slower experience checking out. But otherwise I really enjoyed the donut and the chocolate croissant I got. Not sure this bakery truly lives up to all its hype though, nothing really blew me away extraordinarily. I got an assortment of treats here but unfortunately they ran out of the hand filled donuts by the time I got here - 2pm on a Sunday. Donuts: chocolate old fashioned and honey dipped glaze donuts were good, but standard. Rugelach: I got both the chocolate chip and apricot. I really appreciated the plentiful nuts that were in this, and actually didn't notice too much of a difference between these two. I'm not a big fan of rugelach, but I would get this again. The black and white cookies were good, and I'm also generally not a fan of these types of cookies. The cookie was moist, and the frosting had that characteristic firm texture, but didn't taste like chemicals. Great bread and baked good BUT THE WORST ONLINE ORDERING system. I placed an online order for a dozen bialys for my wife's surprise birthday breakfast with pick up at the East 78th Store. I drove an hour in traffic to get there to pick up my order at the appointed hour but when I arrived, even though I presented the confirmation of my order and payment, the person at the register knew nothing about it and had no bialys for me. When I asked to speak to the manager he said that there was nothing he could do about it and didn't even apologize for their screwup!!! When I finally got through to Orwashers main number they were apologetic but only offered me a refund (thanks a lot) but no credit or anything to compensate me for the wasted time and effort. So my advice is going to the store and buying is a safe bet but online ordering is a crapshoot. Caveat Emptor. read more

I've always loved Orwasher. Unfortunately, the bagel I received this morning was as hard as a rock! I was looking forward to a soft, freshly baked treat, but what I got was a dense, unpleasant surprise. I suspect that the bagel may have been taken from the "day-old" bin, rather than the fresh basket. I hope the bakery will take steps to ensure that customers receive fresh products in the future. *Advice to Others* To anyone planning to visit this bakery, I recommend double-checking the quality of your baked goods before leaving the store. It's simply the best place in town for fresh bread, pastries and bagels. They have a wonderful selection of artisan breads and they also have coffee if you prefer to feast on your selection before you get back home. The staff is helpful and they are carefully following covid protocols. Most of the breads are vegan. My only regret is that they do not have any vegan pastries. read more

Crazy decadent. My only minor complaint was that it's crispy on the outside. But that's just a personal preference, I like doughy over crispy. Also, it's huge. So that made me feel more like the $5.50 was worth it. They're better known for their jelly doughnuts, which aren't my go-to fave.
