The waitress Ling charged me for an hibachi dinner for my daughter when I asked for a kids meal. The manager then tells me even though it was a misunderstanding I still need to pay for what I got. I started recording her so she told me if I deleted the video she would give me my food for free. After the video was deleted, She then told me she wanted my daughters food back and I still had to pay for a kids meal as well as my food. This establishment is simply amazing! As a frequent business traveler I always seek out the best sushi and hibachi restaurants to try while I am on the road. Osaka is my local favorite and easily in my top 5 out of any of the places that I have frequented in Los Angeles, Manhattan, Miami, and other big cities throughout the U.S. The atmosphere is most excellent and the chefs and wait staff are always very good as well. SUSHI: The sushi is some of the freshest I have ever had and they have a ton of rolls to choose from. Mondays & Wednesdays are 50% of sushi days from open to close. This goes for all of the rolls, even the specialty ones! If you want a local Grand Rapids restaurant for sushi that will rival anything that you will find on Michigan Ave in Chicago or Broadway in Manhattan, this is the place for you! HIBACHI: When you come for Hibachi you must request either Sumo or James as your Chef, you will have the time of your life. Sumo cooks with what he calls a more "southern" flavor. His dishes are always a little sweeter and his fried rice is by far the best I have had yet at a hibachi restaurant. James is the man for a fun family night out. He will serenade you with any top 40 song as he cooks and he also puts on a great show for the kids. People seem to really enjoy him as he is very interactive with the customers. He also will get a little crazy with the adult groups if they are looking to have some saki bombs with dinner. Anytime I am there his tables are always smiling and laughing! MANAGEMENT: One of the owners of the restaurant is Eason. He is usually there no matter the time of day with his wife Ling. They take great pride in the restaurant and the experience that their customers have. You will not go wrong if you decide on this place for your Friday or Saturday night out on the town. Once you try them you will find yourself going back over and over. A final thought. I did take the time to read through the reviews that have been posted on here for Osaka. Unfortunately, there have been a couple of 1 and 2 star reviews. All I can say to that is you can't be perfect all the time. Over the year or so that Osaka has been open I have had the opportunity to speak with Eason on a few occasions. From those conversations I know that any feedback he is given about something that wasn't quite right with the meal or the service is immediately addressed. Even a 5-star restaurant has its nights where things don't click. I can say that this is not the norm for Osaka though. It was a bit of a trek on a whitewashed winter evening when I went here yesterday for half off sushi with my brother and a friend, but I'm glad a made the perilous journey. So Osaka is more or less comparable to Fujiyama on East Beltline. The buildings are almost identical in size with very similar ambience and layout, and they both do teppanyaki (a.k.a. hibachi) performance dinners, and both have pretty extensive asian fusion and sushi menus. I ordered a tempura asparagus roll, a peanut-avocado roll and a kanpyo-cream cheese roll. They were all on the smaller side, which usually the case when i go half-off sushi deals, and I maybe will order 4 rolls next time around. Either way, the sushi was very delicious and a great value. They had a handful of other interesting vegetarian rolls I'd like to try next time I go, so that was also a plus. Just remember to go on a Monday or Wednesday for the half-off sushi! I came here during their soft opening. It is newly renovated, but someone forgot to put in some lights. I love the dark wood but, it was afternoon when my mom and I stopped in and it was quite dark on the inside. I'm sure they were tying to give it an intimate feeling, but it felt awkward for being the middle of the day. They have a large menu of sushi and other food options as well. My mom and I ordered a bento box and five sushi rolls. The sushi was good, but the bento box came with plain white rice, not a sticky rice as we are accustomed to seeing. Our server was very friendly and eager to hear our thoughts on the food. We said that we were pleased with the sushi and made him aware of our concerns regarding the rice in the bento. I have yet to return to see if any changes were made, but I still plan on eating here again now that they have been open longer. read more

I found this place by accident and I am so glad I did. The best thing about Osaka is their Osaka roll and half-off sushi rolls on Monday's and Wednesday's! The first thing you will notice about Osaka is that it is hidden next door to a hotel on a busy street leading to the highway. A difficult to find place and get into the parking lot but well worth the fight with traffic. Once parked, you enter into a very Japanese looking lobby and to the right are tables for the hibachi and shabu meals and to the left the bar and behind tables for normal sushi meals. The waiters are very polite, service is quick and the food delicious. My brother and I have been there multiple times for the sushi and have tried to taste the hibachi and shabu a few times. My first time eating shabu our waitress helped explain how to make our food and how long to cook most of the meat (we got the chicken and miso broth). I enjoy the feeling after a meal to sit back and drink their amazing green tea. read more

Have tried the trifecta - shabu shabu, hibachi and sushi. The shabu is like cooking with a hot pot built into your table. You order different proteins off the menu and are provided veggies. You mix your own sauce and cook everything in your hot pot. A lot of work and if you aren't good with flavor, this isn't for you. Fun novelty, not worth the effort. Hibachi is typical - cook flips knives and spatulas and throws rice in your pie hole. Usually a flaming volcano made of onions. Presentation is nice for a group, taste is ok. Sushi - lots of good rolls to choose from. One of my favorites is the spicy scallop. The other is the lobster roll made with soy paper. Not the best quality seafood, but above average. Insider tips: go on Mon or Wed which features half off all sushi all day, including specialty rolls. Caution: these days the lines are long and you will be waiting after ordering for close to an hour - lunch or dinner time. You can sit in the hibachi area and only order sushi if you get impatient waiting for a table. If you have the time, makes it worth it for the price. read more

I've been to many different sushi restaurants before, and if there wasn't half offs on Monday & Wednesday, I couldn't see myself coming repeatedly. The sushi is average and the nigiri/sashimi doesn't seem fresh. White Tuna wasn't oily and fatty how it's suppose to be and the salmon nigiri had a weird taste to it. The rolls and specialties are generic but if you pick the right ones they can be delicious. The hibachi chefs are hilarious, they seem to have great personality and love what they do. I had the chicken hibachi combo and the chicken was dry and the fried rice was really greasy. The decor is authentic and is looks what you expect it to be and the service is on and off. I went to Osaka tonight with two of my friends and the atmosphere seemed nice. We ordered our food at the habachi spot and noticed at the table across from us that the noodles that the man was about to put on the grill was literally touching the floor and one noodle was no joke stuck in the wheel. Our first thought was, "oh he is not going to use those noodles." Approximately 5-6 minutes later we see him carelessly grab the tray and fry those noodles that were stuck in the wheel and on the ground and put onto the grill. Meaning that 8-10 people sitting around the grill were eating noodles from the floor. That is utterly disgusting to me. read more

I really really did not want to rate this place because I understand the sweat and tears that go into making a business. And it's a very personal thing for someone to see a negative review about their business but I just have to put my story out there. First of all I have been to this location 4 times (shabu side) Grand opening to regular business hours. I have legitamitely given this place a chance. The good: Service seems good. When it was busy they didn't seem to want to come to our table as much but, eh. Service was fine. The not so okay: (I did not try to hibachi so I can not review on the Hibachi. This is on all their other food) Food. First of all, I don't even like Hibachi that much. I get it the whole jist of Hibachi, but to me it's a restaurant copping out making good food by filling you up with vegetables, rice and little bit of meat then charging you 15-20$ a head. Sushi- I've tried the sushi here .... 3 times? 3/4 times I came here. It was sub par. If you read my other reviews I frequent sushi restaurants not out of snootiness but because I can't always eat meat very much. Fish is a very important staple in my life and when the fish I receive is wrong in coloring, or even when my sushi roll unravels itself even before it reaches my table, I'm going to have a frown on my face. Also tried the philly roll for kicks, I thing 3/4 of the roll was the cream cheese. Thank you if I wanted to eat a Cream cheese roll, I would grabbed a chunk of cream cheese from Meijer and just put it on some nori and made it at home. Ramen- I was super excited to see that Osaka would have Ramen in their menu when they first opened. Unfortunately I was unable to order it the first two times I went because they were "out of stock". After patiently waiting I went back in my 4th visit and asked if the Ramen was available. Yes! It was. I was delighted to hear that and in my mind I was thinking "No longer will I have to travel 2-3 hours for some Ramen. I can just have it in GR!" Let me tell you I didn't have this ... super high expectation. On a scale of 1-10 I would've been content with 5~6. I rather would have ate Ichiban ramen and I should have it would've saved me alot of heartbreak because I already know what to expect of it. I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen to find water reeking of pork, no depth, no oil to the broth. The pork itself, was inedible. The noodles were very complex. It seemed like it was half cooked but also at the same time tasted like the pork water. The vegetables? Oh I would've been content if I could have eaten some vegetables. Some big spinach were thrown in on top like it was a garnish. I know that Ramen is a pork based broth. I didn't complain. What was I supposed to do? I paid for my meal because I ordered it, it was my mistake for even thinking Osaka would put "Ramen" on their menu because they COULD make it. Now I realize what happened. Osaka put Ramen on their menu because it is a idealized "Japanese" dish. Even if they weren't ready or prepared to make it, because they are a "Japanese" restaurant. I probably won't return here again. I didn't even talk about the shabu shabu because that itself is another 3 paragraphs. You might enjoy it if you enjoy Hibachi(Teppanyaki), cheap sushi that's cheap for a reason. But please, do not order that Ramen. Just don't. read more

It is with a heavy heart I deliver this review... There has only been four times in my life where I did not pay for a dish and a few days ago, while dining at Osaka, was the fourth. I ate with my parents who work off Patterson and they had seen the signs many times and wanted to check it out. I met them there for dinner and we were disappointed. First, I'm going to say that I really thought our server was a sweet heart. She was very polite and kind. I felt bad that I didn't eat my meal because she looked so sad when she took away my dishes. That withstanding, she also did not speak great English which made it hard for my father to understand what sauce would be on the chicken wings he ordered for an appetizer. I think toward the end he wasn't sure if they were spicy, sour, hot, sweet or tangy but ordered them anyway. The execution of the dishes we ordered were all sloppily done and with poor quality product. Sushi really is one of the food items I don't want to have second rate preparations for and ours was definitely second rate. The salmon was cut incorrectly, the rice had no flavor, the surf clam (hokkigai) had good texture but a horrible tin flavoring which tells me it is not being stored properly, and the Osaka Roll was okay. I ordered the Beef Udon and it was just plain bad. The noodles were overcooked and had no flavor, the broth had no flavor and the beef was overcooked and dried out from sitting in the broth too long. I still feel bad for that bowl... I wish Osaka the best but much work needs to go into service training, food preparation, menu development and upkeep to the restaurant. read more

My parents know the owners, so they took us here as soon as we arrived from out of town. Very friendly staff. Entertaining cook. Beautiful, comfortable decor and building. Lots of food! The teppanyaki food was great - better than at some other places I've had. I really enjoyed my fried rice as it wasn't overloaded with soy or teriyaki sauce. Meat was cooked to our liking and they served PLENTY of vegetables. The sushi, however, did not rank high: both of the rolls I ordered were tasteless (even the Grand Rapids roll with the mango on top), and I did not like that the raw tuna was chopped into fine pieces inside one of them. I wished they had left the tuna in larger slices to give my teeth the chance to chew into something meatier. I did NOT get that umami sense I usually get with sushi elsewhere! Understand that your clothes and hair will smell like the restaurant once you leave. The facility looks very nice and clean... so far. That's to be expected since they're fairly new, but I'm curious to see how well they keep this up in the coming year. Parking lot is a little tight and sloped in the front. It was getting dark, so I did not see what more space they might've had. Though Wikipedia says the term "hibachi" is ok to refer to the hot-plate surface type of cooking, this should really be called "teppanyaki." Osaka does not have true hibachi. read more

It was a Friday night around seven pm when we decided to give this place a whirl. Me and my boyfriend are both foodies and very into sushi as well. The parking lot was pretty empty, maybe eight cars. Upon entering we were seated promptly in a booth. At which time we noticed it was very very cold in there. So cold I could not remove my coat. We sat for at least five minutes before a server even came to say hello. This whole time having nothing to drink, not even water. Once the Server came up I ordered a white wine, my boyfriend ordered the house hot saki. About Another five minutes go by and finally she brings our drinks, sort of. Mine was correct, however my boyfriend was served a big glass of dark beer. The Server ran away so quickly we couldn't even say anything. Another five minutes go by, and while we are waiting my boyfriend discovers some gross brown sticky stuff has gotten on his white golf shirt from the side of the table. The waitress finally returns, at which point we ask for the check and explain her mistake. We also inform her we are going to go elsewhere to dine. Neither of us drank our drinks, and the restaurant still changed us for my wine!!!! Now, maybe it's just me, but I think that we should not have paid. We immediately left and went to Sushi Kuni where we are always taken care of and the food is excellent. read more

Don't go on half price sushi night! Judging by the crowds, I couldn't wait to try the hibachi and sushi at Osaka. It came recommended by our hotel and was within walking distance. When we got there we found a hectic, slightly chaotic environment. It didn't get any better when we walked up to the teenage hostesses. We got a very confusing answer when asked about how long the wait was. It was something along the lines of it wouldn't be too long but she wasn't really sure because she was new. We decided we would get a drink while we waited but even the bar was too crowded to have a seat. That didn't deter us from ordering a drink special, A Green Hornet. We asked what was in it but between the general din of the restaurant and the bar tender's thick accent, the only thing we could decipher was vodka. It was a tasty, tart but smooth concoction that included vodka and a mixture of alcohols giving the drink its namesake. With Green Hornet in hand and standing room only at the bar, I was mildly amused as I saw the chaos up close. The hostesses lost one of the waiting parties but never thought to check outside of the cramped waiting room by opening the door that was directly in front of them. Since the restaurant doesn't provide the buzzers to let you know your table is ready, I wondered if the other customers just left or if they're still waiting to be called. To make a really long story short, the chaos continued, when we were finally seated about 30 minutes later, we were seated in the Hibachi area with a group that was already seated. When we had to ask for menus, we were told we couldn't order then because the group already ordered. When we asked why we were seated there, we were told because it was an open table. What's the good in being seated at a table you can't even order from? We were told if we moved to the other side of the table, they would send someone over to take our order but that it would be 45 minutes before we could even get an appetizer. Really?! The waitress did apologize but said they were busy because it was half price sushi night. So I can't tell you about the food because I never got to taste it but I can certainly tell you about the ROTTEN service, especially on the Wednesday half price sushi night! read more

A great lunch time option, especially on half off days! I visited on a Wednesday for their half off sushi (they also have half off on Mondays). I ordered two of their unique rolls from their extensive menu. I found both to be moist, well put together, and flavorful, not to mention, very colorful. I also ordered a side of Miso soup and found it fresh although I would have liked more tofu and green onions in it. We sat outside on their small patio, but the dining room is large with plenty of seating. They also offer hibachi on one side of the restaurant. I just wanted to add that the miso soup in Osaka is true miso as is served in a Japanese restaurant. Unlike the other place in town that shockingly passes Lipton onion soup as miso soup. Miso soup is made out of miso or soy bean paste. The bowl should look like there is a cloud of 'miso' in the soup when left undisturbed for a couple of minutes. It should also have small cubes of tofu and some shreds of sea weed. Also as one reviewer pointed out the correct term for the cooking of steaks on the table is Tepanyaki. But I have yet to see a local Japanese restaurant call it that. If you go to big cities or anywhere in Asia you will see Tepanyaki in Japanese steak houses. I am sure Osaka did this so as not to confuse people anymore. Does not bother me. I am glad that Osaka opened with the offerings they have. It's about time for Grand Rapids. My issue was with the wait staff- I felt they were short with guests, unattentive, and slightly rude. The food was good- a typical hibachi fare but it was too salty. Love this place! I have been a few times now and had pleasant experiences each time. The wait staff is always very friendly and when we went on a night that wasn't busy the chef came out to speak with us to make sure everything tasted well. Half-Off Wednesday is packed but they were still able to accommodate a large group (8 people) with almost no wait time. We go back to this place on a regular basis because the menu has a wide variety and we want to try everything. UPDATE: I have gone back a few times now and it seems the more popular this place becomes the longer it takes to get food.
