It gets busy during this day, so the sushi won't really be made to perfection, and the servers don't really care about you to be honest. This will probably the last time i go to Osaka sadly. Their service was very rushed. It was my sisters birthday party and i was the one to choose the restaurant. Food was cold and very unappetizing. Personally, feel that a lot of their stuff on the menu were copied from Ichiban and Fuji Yama.. they sang the birthday song and gave my sister fried ice cream. Hibachi places always provide a unique dining experience if it's somewhere you go only once or twice a year. From place to place, you can pretty much expect the same type of entertainment from your table chef, and this place was no different... the usual smiley face made from oil, volcanic onion, spinning the eggs, etc. These guys liked to take chopped pieces of raw zucchini and flick them into our mouths with their spatulas. I actually caught the piece he tossed at my face! I love the aspect of cooking on the table in front of me until you see how much oil and butter they put on everything, but I guess that's what makes it so delicious. My only complaint about hibachi in general is that they cook the rice and noodles first and then move to veggies and meat, and by then the rice is usually cold. Have to say that I went there on Wednesday which was half off on sushi night and the wait was an hour and a half long which was expected, thank goodness that my hotel is right next door. So when we finally got seated the lady kept bringing us beers and we got a free Miso Soup.Our food took quite awhile but I ordered 6 rolls and they were all really good. Not sure why all the bad reviews. My wife and I went here on Saturday for lunch. Some co-workers had recommended. We had the teppanyaki and sushi. Couple of points: - Interior is very nice compared to exterior. - Food is cheap and portions are large (teppanyaki lunch was around $8/$9 pp). - Our teppanyaki chef was very entertaining and engaging. - Sushi was good. In fact, better than most of the more popular places around GR. We moved from DC and sushi here has been lacking. Will def. be back. read more

I went to Osaka for the half off grand opening deal. My hubby and I sat at the hibachi and had some cocktails. My lychee martini was delicious and the hibachi chefs proved very entertaining...dare I say randy. The usual pyrotechnics accompanied by singing and jokes made the passably good hibachi a special experience. (It also transformed a humdrum old date into a memorable, "adults only" night out.) I've been back to Osaka multiple times since to try the sushi on the half off sushi Wednesdays and have not been disappointed. I've tried the Osaka roll, the triangle roll, lobster lovers, spicy lobster, grand rapids roll, philadelphia, spider roll, and tuna sashimi. The Grand Rapids roll did not have the traditional seaweed wrapper and was somewhat bland but otherwise, the waitstaff suggested the other rolls and all had well-rounded flavors and yummy texture. The waitstaff is extremely helpful and considerate, too. They always hold the door for me (I'm usually toting a baby in a car seat) and are not intrusive in their waiting. And, as a mom, anyone who makes googoo faces and laughs when my baby cries instead of looking annoyed goes straight on my nice list. read more

My friend and I stopped in for a late sushi lunch today. We hadn't read the reviews prior to arrival. I looked thru the reviews while my friend was in the restroom. The low reviews didn't turn us away. We ordered 4 different rolls- Tiffany, Dragon Vegetable, Sweet Potato, and California. We ordered all rolls in soy papers, as well as ginger salads and hot tea. We found out that the sushi was 50% off on Wednesdays- bonus! The ginger salad had a peanut flavor and was so good! Each roll was fresh and tasty. we were very happy with every thing we ordered. Thought we would get sushi today when we went to Costco in Grand Rapids. Arrived shortly after their opening on the day. Ordered our food -- the unagi and salmon sushi showed up - very average - and finally, the ginza roll showed up, attractive but mushy, and we waited and waited for the dancing dragon roll to show up. I was hoping that would save the day. But after sitting there at the sushi bar waiting for 40 minutes, we canceled it and left. To their credit, they had brought us seaweed and edamame; however, we didn't want it and felt bad not eating it. It was like a bunch of kids were running the place and no one knew what was going on. They repeatedly told us that "the oil was heating." Very weird, uncomfortable time. We tipped more than 20% because it wasn't the fault of the sweet waitress. read more

The Sushi is great for the price on the 1/2 off Monday's. The men's bathroom is flat out disgusting, one urinal has been broke for months and smells of stale urine. The other stall is almost as nasty and they don't clean the mirror or sinks. So if you can eat without using the restroom, you'll be fine. read more

Osaka is truly one of my favorite restaurants. I've taken my daughters there several times and we always have a great experience. The sushi is tasty and beautifully presented. The hibachi experience is always entertaining. Shabu shabu is a nice social thing to do with friends. Don't do that if you're in a hurry. Everything here is meant to be savored. I've come here for both sushi as well as hibachi, and I can only say good things about hibachi. Unfortunately, that is not he case for sushi. I have come when it was half off and regular price. And whichever the occasion you can expect to wait 10 minutes for a greet, 10 minutes to get your drinks, and then another 50-60 minutes to receive your meal. The food is wonderful, but the service is absolutely terrible. This establishment needs to re-train its servers on punctuality and politeness. read more

Well, we're sad things aren't as good as before. We had to chase down our waitress, who went missing - much to the frustration of the lead waitress who went looking for her, gave up, and humorlessly took our order and another table's order. The food was subpar, too: overcooked katsu, no wasabi for the sushi on either of our plates, no dish to put soy and wasabi in (several overly sweet dips came with it instead), and weak tea bags instead of brewed green tea. Went during their opening week when they offered 50% off, and boy am I glad that it was 50% off because I was very disappointed in the ShabuShabu and sushi. After just being in California and having Shabu over there (JazzCat Yummmm!!) this place is like eating at McDonalds. I ordered the spicy broth, and boy was it spicy..no flavor just spice, I think all they did was throw a bunch of peppers and hot chili into the broth. The meat that was given was not presented well at all, seem like they sliced some meat and threw it onto the plate. Vegi's were also given, and not to seem too picky but really iceburg salad for my shabu? And the fishballs i ordered were frozen solid, it still had ice on them. WORST HIBACHI I HAVE EVER HAD!!! I understand as a first week opening there are certain exceptions to lengthy waits and customer service as all staff are in a training process. I enjoyed the atmosphere, however was met by a hostess who didn't smile, didn't make eye contact or acknowledge us. Instead she helped those currently waiting and eventually asked us, "how many". Once we were sat, it took more than 20 minutes before any server came to us (keep in mind we had waited 10 minutes at the door) and when she did, no introduction, no smile, just an explanation of how she would be bringing us water and be right back. I asked if the hot tea was decaffeinated (as I am not supposed to have caffeine). I was told she was going to let me know. 10 minutes later we were brought our drinks, including a tea that I didn't order with no answer to my question. While waiting my husband drew back his arm to find it covered in a sauce left over from a previous patron and find it all over the inside back of his chair, arm and shirt. Our table was only half wiped off with sauce spills and grease from the earlier sitters. I moved my foot to find there was food crammed under my seat, as well as a dirty napkin! Then, I went to use the restroom and saw that my entire back was covered with someone else rice!!!! By now I was about to leave except we got our salads and I was hungry. Little did I know it would be another 40 minutes before I got my soup...upon request...after 3 people at my table had already gotten theirs (leaving 6 of us waiting), and during the cooking of our hibachi. We started to run out of room so we ended up busing our own table and placing our used dishes on the neighboring dirty one. There was never once a server who came and asked about refills or if we needed anything. Not once during the entire meal. We were ALL remarking how thirsty we were. After ALL of us were done eating it took another 20 minutes to have my husband watching the TV and the server lean from a neighboring table and yell to him, "I'll be over after getting their order". Completely rude. My experience was one like I have never had before and I wish I had gone to McDonalds. I understand that there are kinks to be worked out upon opening but this was inexcusable. It was disgusting and took 2 1/2 hours for a horrible experience. Terrible customer service and horrible sanitation! read more
