Everyone and I do mean everyone was so attentive, so nice and so helpful. The staff left a Happy Anniversary card on our table. Thank you Tatjana and Dottie for your beautiful smiles and taking such great care of us. Dottie was very helpful with menu suggestions and Tatjana checked on us often to make sure everything was going well. Thank you to the gentleman who kept our water glasses filled and the pianist who took us down memory lane with the songs he played. Happy hour is all night on Fridays so we tried the shrimp cocktail and half dozen oysters. Hubby enjoyed them both. This was the first time my husband had a tomahawk steak. It was perfectly cooked. The Vault is a steakhouse located on the first floor of a building with entrances on Pine and California. A parking garage is available and the restaurant validates for $5 parking. Once inside the restaurant, the first thing you'll notice is a piano player in the bar area and you'll pass the main dining area and private dining room as you walk deeper into the restaurant. On a Thursday night around 6pm, roughly half the tables were filled, though I am unsure if the empty tables were held for reservations or available for walk ins. Despite the piano player, the restaurant was surprisingly quiet considering the diners had conversations at their respective tables. I started off my meal with the hand cut beef tartare. I really liked this starter since it wasn't just a slab of finely cut raw meat; black truffle vinaigrette and salt cured egg yolk was mixed in to add flavor and texture, making it resemble Hawaiian poke in a sense. It also came with a slice of what seemed to be an elevated garlic bread which came out warm. For my main course I had an 8 oz filet mignon with black truffle bordelaise, cooked medium rare. Prior to receiving my steak, the waiter came to the table with a selection of steak knives. My medium rare seemed closer to a rare but I still enjoyed my filet. Sides for the table included black truffle mac and cheese, crispy Brussels sprouts, and Vault fries. The mac and cheese was nice and creamy, the Brussels sprouts had the perfect crunch and flavor, and the fries had a nice crunch and tasted like they were fried in duck fat or something similar. For dessert I had their Ghirardelli chocolate-espresso budino featuring brownie, creme chantilly, and candied nuts. This was probably my least favorite course since it seemed like a chocolate dessert a kid could've put together, but still tasted good. To drink I had the Board of Relief and Across Two Barrels and both were very good. Overall, I was very satisfied with my dinner at The Vault and believe it was worth the trip from out of the area. I finally got to try The Vault Steakhouse and I really enjoyed my meal and experience. We sat in the piano bar area of the restaurant and it made for a much more interesting experience. The decor balances modern and traditional aesthetics. These were the items enjoyed at the table: -Focaccia - good way to start the meal, it arrives fairly warm with whipped ricotta. -Ribeye Steak - this was very good...a nice quality steak, cooked perfectly and with the right amount of salt to bring out the natural flavors from the meat. -Brussel Sprouts - these were cooked very well and definitely enjoyable. -Truffle Mac and Cheese - wow, these were amazing! It's difficult to find very good mac and cheese and this was perfect since it was rich with the perfect amount of cheese and salt...the truffle was light and just enough to enhance the dish without overpowering it. -Pumpkin Cheesecake - this was good, a nice, subtlety sweet dessert. I will say the service could be improved. While we were warmly greeted upon arrival, our server was not as polished as I would expect from a steakhouse: she seemed somewhat inexperienced and there were moments when we had to wait long periods before getting our drinks refilled or making sure we were taken care of. Half an hour and a BART ride later, I get to the door and see a piece of paper taped to the door saying that it is closed for remodelling July 2nd - 5th (or maybe 6th). Three stars. This review is only for the happy hour, which is a solid 4 star bc of its great value. The happy hour menu is available til 9pm, which is really generous as HHs usually end at 6-7pm in other places in the city. The hh menu was limited but everything was made with quality. The cocktails were spirit forward and I really liked the classic martini. my companions got the old fashioned and they enjoyed it as well. We also ordered off the hh menu for some wine, the pours were closer to 4oz vs the typical 5 oz pour, we didn't think it was a big deal, but mostly bc we were getting our value from the HH menu, so a smaller pour could have been be a big deal if we were here for dinner instead. We also ordered the espresso martini, which also was not on the HH menu, despite the price it was worth it, it was REALLY REALLY well made. Not pre batched like many other places, they also use REAL coffee beans that they make fresh espresso right in front of you, then shake it for what seems like 10 mins straight until it's super foamy. They don't put in kalua or any of those additives that make it taste generic. I really enjoyed it and the bartender was really passionate about sharing his process with us. We also ordered the fries which were $6. Another really good deal, it came in a generous portion in a nice big bowl. It was super crispy and chewy at the same time and the inside was piping hot soft potato goodness. I usually don't like bar fries but these were excellent, I loved the texture and how perfectly they were fried. I would have ordered another one if we had stayed longer. Ambiance a little strange bc it was really lit, and I would think that a fancy steakhouse with a piano would opt for dimmer lighting. My work group came in about an hour before closing on a weeknight, and the staff was very accommodating and welcoming, which we really appreciated. The space has a classic underground feel and a nice atmosphere. While the food didn't quite stand out as much as we hoped, it was still enjoyable (factoring in the time of night). We've been trying out different steakhouses in the area for our guys birthday dinners and we found this place. I made reservations just in case the place was busy during the holidays. We arrived on time and they sat us down right away. They brought us waters right away which was good. Our waitress came around to take drink orders. We all ordered drinks which came out fairly quick. We didn't order any appetizers before our meal. We did order some bread for the table which was not free but it was good. For our orders we ordered the french onion soup, caesar salads, and the lobster bisque to start. For our entrees we ordered the RIbeye, the branzino, the New York steak, and the steak frites. For the sides we ordered the mash potatoes, the truffle mac n cheese, and the creamy spinach. We also ordered a bottle of red wine for dinner. Our starters came out shortly afterwards which wasn't bad. The French onion soup looked good, had some good flavor, plenty of cheese, but there wasn't much onions in it and it was more like mushroom soup with all the mushrooms that was in it. The lobster bisque was just ok, it didn't have the creamy, buttery lobster flavor like it should have. The caesar salad was to creamy and not like a good caesar flavor, and thats the first time I've seen one with eggs on it. Finally, a guy who I think may have been the manager came over and told me that they didn't have the bottle of wine we wanted and recommended another bottle for us, I said ok. I thought the price would've been comparable to what we ordered or that he would've given us that bottle for the same price as the other one since they didn't have the one we wanted but after we got our bill, I saw that the charge for the new bottle was almost doubled than the bottle we wanted. The entrees came out and my steak was overcooked, it was supposed to be med rare, it was more like med to well. My friends said that the fish was just ok, nothing special about it, the steak frites was good I was told cooked perfect, one New York steak was good I was told, the other one was over cooked as well, and the last steak was also cooked good. One of my friends ordered some horseradish which wasn't free and it was too creamy and mild. Our sides were very disappointing, the mac n cheese wasn't that cheesy and it was watery, the creamy spinach wasn't that creamy and was also watery, and the mash potatoes was really small, luke warm, and was just ok. Normally, any restaurant we go to they always give the birthday person a free dessert dish but not this place. We didn't order any desserts this time. As for our waitress, she was not that good. She wasn't that pleasant, she was not around a lot to see if we needed anything, and we often had to ask her for things twice. I also told her about my steak and nothing happened with that. Also, expect the prices to be just a little high which we expected. I really don't like giving low ratings like this but this time, this was warranted. read more

When she took a break.. we were at peace. We ordered a ribeye, Caesar salad, and broccoli. The gentleman came out and made the Caesar salad in front of us. I would have to say that the dressing was a little bit too lemony for me. But the croutons were amazing. I would give the salad, a three out of five. Was so excited to try this place for the first time!! We went for Valentines day and, we ended up being highly disappointed . We had incident on top of incident food not coming out as ordered, wait time to place a drink order and just to get service in general was extremely difficult. It was bad weather that evening so, we both had overcoats. My boyfriend had to pit his on the back of his chair and I sat mine folded on the side of me, only to see later on the hostess taking ppl coats as they entered to hang in the coat check! They were offering a $99 Valentines dinner special that included starter, entree and dessert. My boyfriend ordered the Ribeye Steak(medium well) and I ordered the Lobster Risotto. His steak came cooked well done ,so we had to send it back. We literally had to ask for someone to check on the 2nd steak because it was taking way too long. One of my goals when I travel is to sneak away and eat a Steak. So for me, finding The Vault Steakhouse, was indeed a revelation. I walked from my hotel (Staying at the Hyatt Regency on 3rd Street) it was a quick 15 minutes to reach The Vault. You have an option to either sit within the Piano Bar area or the rear of the space where there is more traditional sit down experience. The transition however, is seamless as I choose the more traditional sit-down and yet, the ambiance of the piano playing in the front still was present, which to me, enhanced the atmosphere. Food and Service: Shoutout to my server Nathan! He was amazing as not only being my host for the evening, but the entire staff for making me feel comfortable. As a solo diner, I often find that I get left to my own devices and, for some reason, not attended to or ignored till I end up ecstatically waving someone down. But, tonight was a different story, not only did Nathan and the entire staff make sure my wine glass was full, but frequently asked how my meal was and if I was comfortable. For that, bravo. Food-wise, I ordered their Ribeye with Potato Puree and Creamed Spinach. I like my steak Medium Rare with slight sear on the top. From the first cut, I knew the steak was done perfectly. The tiny crackle from the sear to the buttery cut of the medium rare interior, indeed was something I was looking for. The seasonings were on point and not to overwhelming as to not take away from the meat. The Potato puree was soft and cloudlike with that slight butter and garlic, while the creamed spinach complemented both. Overall a great meal overall. My knock however, was my knife. One of my delights was that I got to choose my knife and honestly that was indeed my highlight of the meal. It served to heighten the drama of my dinner. It was a small joy to be graced with such a choice! However, from the first cut, I had to work a bit harder to cut my steak. The Vault Steakhouse is a delightful spot once you actually find it -- when you enter the building, head downstairs. It's got that moody, special-occasion vibe that feels perfect for a celebratory dinner. The service was truly excellent; every staff member we interacted with was attentive and kind. We were there for Restaurant Week. My husband ordered the Prime Rib, my son had the New York Steak, and I went with the Grilled Salmon. My son's steak was the clear winner -- glistening and perfectly cooked, and he said it was delicious. My salmon, unfortunately, was undercooked in the center. I had already eaten about two-thirds of it before realizing, so I mentioned it just to inform the chef, not to make a scene. They apologized, but I was a little surprised nothing was offered as a courtesy adjustment on the bill. Both my husband and son started with the Lobster Bisque, which they loved. The Caesar Salad was fine -- nothing special. For dessert, the Chocolate Budino was rich and delicious, while the Pumpkin Cheesecake Pavlova was a pass for me. The cocktails, though, were fantastic -- truly the highlight of the evening. Creative, balanced, and beautifully presented. I'd absolutely come back for drinks and maybe small bites at the bar, but not necessarily for a full dinner. First off let me say the staff were absolutely amazing! From when we entered to when we left, we were checked on and taken care of every step of the way. Our waiter, Nathan, really made our day special by adding a lovely letter on the table celebrating my friends birthday. The setting was really intimate and relaxing. I would recommend sitting in the main room and not the piano room because the piano is pretty loud and it can still be heard from the main area. The food was so so good. We eat steak a lot and this was honestly one of our tops. We got to pick our steak knives as well which was a cute touch. I will say the lobster mac was not our favorite. I have recently come to this restaurant for 2 celebratory dinners with different work teams and all are in agreement that this restaurant was spectacular. The food, service, and ambiance were all memorable. The place itself is nicely lit and had a very mellow but sophisticated vibe, and both times that I've visited they've had a piano player which added a lovely touch to our time there. Between the two groups we've had the mussels, shrimp cocktail, focaccia bread, potato "pave" tots, and lobster dip. They were all hits with special shot outs to the shrimp cocktail, lobster dip and focaccia breads with butter and olive oil which were popular. We've also had a chance to try the potato purée, roasted broccoli, mac n cheese, French fries, and mushroom gratin. All were winners, but they really do have some of the best French fries in SF. The steaks are well seasoned and perfectly cooked with an amazing char. My leftovers were still somehow perfect the next day, I have no idea how they do it. Highly, highly recommend the steaks. Finally, what I appreciated the most was just the overall level of customer service they provided. They were very gracious with any request, and were kind enough to check our work bags for us. The staff here pays attention to the smallest details, even wiping small water spills, refilling wine glasses timely and artfully, or refolding a crumpled napkin. The bar area has a live piano player, the restaurant area is intimate and, something I like, not super noisy. The service is amazing and the wine list impressive. We were a party of 5 and we shared two dips, the artichoke and onion options. One of our party went with the tableside ceasar salad to go with her steak (sorry no picture) and the table shared the creamed spinach and pureed potatoes. Dinner for three last night and we had a great time. The Vault is a lot more intimate than I imagined, and thankfully, not stuffy. We opted to dine away from the piano lounge since we were dining to catch up and chat, but we could still enjoy the pleasant tunes as background music. The staff were a great balance of friendly and professional, from the moment we walked in until we left. Shout out to our server Dottie and the crew for checking in and often (but gently and unobtrusively) to make sure we had all we needed and when we needed it. Food and beverages were delicious - my highlights included the yummy Parker house rolls and generous gob of butter, a perfectly fragrant Bulleit old-fashioned, a yummy lobster bisque (not overshadowed by hella cream. It was lobster-y!) my giant 16oz NY strip, perfectly medium rare (and plenty to take home for steak and eggs the next day), and the lemon posset for dessert. Recently celebrated our anniversary at this restaurant. Very beautiful atmosphere with great lighting and dark interior. We sat in a booth, not a lot of people so it was not too loud. I thought it was good, but I will probably opt for the A5 Wagyu steak next time because I like the taste better (more marbling and in smaller portions). Atmosphere/decor/trivia: This restaurant is located in a Vault of an old Bank of America building, thus aptly named The Vault Steakhouse. They have the Vault Gardens upstairs. Came here for HH to kickoff our annual San Francisco holiday tour and it was the perfect first stop! This was my first time here but I had seen the Christmas decorations for the Vault Garden pop up on my feed multiple times so we decided to give it a try! (Side note, HH is only offered in the steakhouse so that's where we ended up going, but we walked by the garden and it was so cute!) When we first walked in, there was someone playing Christmas melodies on the baby grand piano and it was definitely the holiday vibes we were going for. They only offer HH in the lounge area, but since someone had booked out that are for a private party they were kind enough to move us to the main dining room but still honor the happy hour. All the food we had was yummy! We got the oysters, vault burger, and tots and they were all delicious. The only thing that was a little deceiving was that the burger and oysters are on the happy hour menu but they're regular price (still delicious though). Their martini was also made so well! I was in the mood for steak one night during a work trip to San Francisco, so I decided to head over to The Vault. The service was impeccable from the moment I walked in the door. I was greeted by live piano music and a friendly host. I sat down instantly and was handed menus and water. I ordered the 16 ounce ribeye and potato purée as my go-to order when trying a steakhouse for the first time. The steak came out and was a little disappointing on the eyes. I had visions of a thick juicy looking slab of meat, but this was pretty thin. But looks can be deceiving, right? Well, not really in this case. The steak was overcooked beyond my medium rare order. It was more like medium well. The steak was very flavorful, but it was also a little tough and chewy because it was overdone. For nearly $70 and listed at 16 ounces, I had higher expectations for this steak. The potato puree was fine. My wife and I had dinner reservations at Trestle down the street. We knew in advance that they didn't have a cocktail menu there so we wanted to grab a pre-dinner drink elsewhere. Thanks to Trestle's website recommendation, we walked a few blocks over and visited The Vault -- Garden. Upon arriving at the Garden, the upstairs outdoor counterpart of the Vault Steakhouse, we were told the area was closed for a private event. Not a huge deal. We were advised to visit the Steakhouse downstairs instead, and honestly, that probably was the better experience. When we stopped by at 5:20 p.m., the steakhouse was still holding their happy hour. There's a cocktail menu with a few drinks on it for $10 each, and this was such a bargain price for the quality cocktails that we received. I ordered their Old Fashioned and it was well-balanced, garnished nicely, and even served over a beautiful block of clear ice. If we had not had dinner reservations coming up, I would've stayed for another drink or ordered some of the food off of their happy hour menu. Wow, what a find! Well technically someone chose this spot for birthday dinner, but nevertheless I am super glad I got to come here. First thing that caught my eye was the piano at the entrance. That and the decor together gives a very cozy smooth jazz kind of vibe which I absolutely love. This would be a great anniversary/special event kind of spot. Service was TOP notch by everyone. They were always around the table to help with questions, get new orders, fill water, etc. Cutlery, plates, and serve ware were smoothly transitioned in and out which made the dining experience great. As for food, everyone at the table ordered different things but I had the bread, NY steak, and a bite of the tomahawk and ALL of those were 1000% worth it!!! The truffle sauce(?) for steak that is extra charge is SOOO worth it! I usually am skeptical of any "fancy" ingredient food bc places usually ends up barely having the flavor but the sauce definitely has that deep truffle flavor.
