This has been our annual go to restaurant every time we visit Fredericksburg. From the service to the food, everything is excellent. It is a small location so definitely make reservations in advance. The duck schnitzel is always a must have and last year they had a beef shank that was absolutely delicious but this year , it was replaced by the lamb shank which was another great dish. This year we got the chocolate torte for the first time and unfortunately it wasn't anything special. It tasted just like a torte you can get from the grocery store. However, the waiter asked us how we liked it and we just said it was ok. He ended up taking it off our check without us asking which was super nice and unnecessary but highly appreciated.

After a nice day visiting downtown Fredericksburg, we stopped in at Otto's for dinner. Being that it was warm in December this year, eating in the patio ended up being very comfortable. The service was great and the food was pretty good. I'm pretty particular about my schnitzel, and the duck schnitzel did not disappoint. While it was good I think next time I'll try the regular pork schnitzel. Paired with an old fashioned, it made for a good night. My wife really liked her scallops too.

We went on a Sunday evening after all the shops in the area closed. Lots of good with this restaurant and a few things I didn't prefer. Wine list is small but has a good selection. We enjoyed all our selections by the glass. The pretzel was perhaps our favorite. Buttery and hot. Perfectly seasoned. The spatzle soup was good but not hot. The clams were bitter because of the beer. Portion was big for an appetizer but I'm sorry to say it was so bitter it became unpleasant. I ordered the duck for my main dish and it was fried really hard and was tough to eat. The duck was way overcooked and dry for my liking. The spatzle and accompaniments were good though. My wife had the Otto salad which was beautifully presented and she enjoyed all the flavors and textures. Well built. Our server was friendly and very personable. Service overall great.

We pulled into town and found this place on Yelp. The reviews caught my attention--especially because of the duck strudel--so we decided to give it a try. Several reviews mentioned that reservations weren't necessary, but I would definitely recommend making one. We went on a Friday night, and while we were able to get a table by arriving early, the place filled up quickly and was fully booked during and after our visit. For an appetizer, we had the schnitzel balls with mustard sauce--melt-in-your-mouth delicious! I ordered the duck strudel, and it was absolutely out of this world. My husband had the bratwurst with sauerkraut, and he loved it. I paired my meal with a German beer called Reissdorf, which was crisp and flavorful--highly recommend it. The only downside was that we didn't save room for dessert, which I definitely regret! As for the service, it felt a little off. The staff seemed rushed and not particularly attentive. My water glass went unfilled several times, and I probably would have ordered another beer if someone had checked in. Once the restaurant filled up, it also got quite loud. I'd suggest they consider some sound-dampening solutions like foam under the seats or at the bar area. That said, the overall atmosphere was really nice, and they have a charming patio with fans--perfect for warmer evenings. Overall, we had a great experience, and I'd absolutely come back to try more of the menu. Next time, we'll start with dessert!

Visit - July 26, 2025 We were a group of 9 visiting from out of town & Otto's is one of the places in town that took line reservations for group size so kudos to them. They did a good job of taking care of us even when there was a hiccup trying to get us seated. Food- to start off we all shared the flammkuchen & the pretzel Und Bierkäse. Both great starters. For our entree, most of us ordered the duck schnitzel which was a HIT. The duck on top of the red cabbage & spaetzle ... a pairing I didn't know I needed. Otto's is will definitely be a place I would recommend if you're ever in the area.

I dont know what it is but I feel the service and desserts in texas have been letting me down :( The main server dealing with us did not look happy. She gave us everything that we needed. But it was just unfriendly and robotic. Maybe because we dont drink . I'm not sure. There was another girl serving in the area that attended to us here and there and she was much more friendlier. When we entered the host was super nice and sat us down. Our server promptly took our drinks order and appetizer. As soon as our food came out we were fighting flies. There was a fan on the wall but it did nothing. I remember asking my husband I wonder whether they have a candle or one of those table fan things to shoo flies away. He said I'm sure if they did they would put it on the table. Honestly we just took turns eating while the other shooed flies away. Our mains order were taken soon and it came out in good time as well. Right about this time the outdoor seating started filling up and a quarter of our way throughthe mains the server asked if we could use one of those fans and we both said YES! It helped alot. We were thinking why it wasnt a standard on all the outdoor tables. We ordered the sauerkraut balls and the flammkuchen to start. Wow were the balls a bomb of flavour really enjoyed them. We had the lamb, schnitzel and wurst plates for mains. . The lamb was so good. The schnitzel and spaetzle were good but the sides were too sweet. Not only was the cabbage sweet but also the cherries on top. For me personally it was too much. My husband liked his wurst plate I ordered the citrus cheesecake to go as I was a bit stuffed.. it was just a little cupcake cheesecake and the meringue was flat and runny. After going to domingo at the river walk and ottos I dont get why independent non chain restaurants dont do something a little more with desserts that aren't what you would get in a "fancy" chain like the cheesecake factory.

Went to Otto's back during Labor Day weekend and the place was PACKED. Thankfully the front of house was able to seat us at one of their last tables after some wait time. I had never been to Fredericksburg and was glad we were able to try out this restaurant when heading over our Uber told us this was a classic and popular place. I tried the duck schnitzel and it was very flavorful and perfectly crispy. I also tried the beet butter and bread which was pretty tasty as well. The service was pretty quick for how busy the place was and we were seated outside which was actually really cute and homey. I would definitely like to go back and check out more of their offerings!

Otto's was so good that it changed my mind about German food. I came in skeptical as the last time I'd had German food it was mediocre, but I left wanting to try more in the future! With the cozy and warm interior and the attentive service, I'd especially love to come back to Otto's. The wurst plate was some of the best German sausage I had (especially compared to the other spots I tried in Fredericksburg). I could tell the meat was different by the chew and texture it had. I never thought I'd enjoy a wurst so much. The sauerkraut and potatoes were amazing as well. The duck schnitzel was very good as well! It paired very well with the red cabbage and the sauce. It was definitely lighter in flavor than I was expecting, but when combined with the wurst plate really balanced the meal out. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed Otto's and would definitely come back again!

Everything was so good! We started with the bread plate - yum beet jam- and sauerkraut balls- so tangy and crisp. The duck schnitzel was the best entree. I think the cherries and cabbage really enhanced it!

If you're looking for a cute little lunch spot after walking through Fredericksburg, this is it! It is on the pricier side, though. We got started with the pretzel and sauerkraut balls. The sauerkraut balls were insane. They were crispy, savory, and the mustard crème fraîche made it the perfect bite. We ordered 2 pretzels for our table. They were huge and fed 6 people. One pretzel super dry but the other was fine. The dry pretzel was really hard to get past but the butter/mustard/apricot jam toppings were very delicious. Our main dish was the duck schnitzel and boy, was it the star of the show. The duck was incredibly tender while the breading had a wonderful crunch. Such a great combination of texture. It was served with a side of German red cabbage and käsespätzle (a creamy, cheesy, pasta). The pasta was so rich while the cabbage was tart. It was a lovely contrast and complimented the duck well. Otto's was a great choice for us after walking around in the sun. Definitely recommend!

TLDR: Thoughtful, modern German fare with standout duck schnitzel, flammkuchen, and well-made sides. Service is friendly, and prices run high. Worth a visit for refined flavors, but not a must-try. Overview: Otto's German Bistro brings a thoughtful, farm-to-table take on German and Austrian cooking to the Hill Country. Service was friendly, though our server seemed stretched, which led to a few gaps in attentiveness. The vibe is friendly and mellow, and the menu is full of Central European classics, with seasonal produce and homemade components front and center. Prices are on the higher end, so set your expectations going in. Food: My party and I tried a variety of appetizers and entrées. The flammkuchen is thin and crisp, and the mix of cambozola and gruyère gives a pleasant, blue-accented richness while the candied bacon provides smoke and heft. The balsamic drizzle brings sweetness and acidity, and it works. The house pretzel arrived unsalted (instead, it was sprinkled with sesame seeds) and not warm, which dulled some of the appeal. However, the smoked Gouda beer cheese supplied the salinity the pretzel lacked, making the bite enjoyable once combined. The wurst plate shows craft and care in the sides. The Kartoffelsalat is tender with mellow seasoning, the sauerkraut is solid, and the Senfgurken bring that lightly sweet, mustard-scented snap you look for in northern German-style pickles. The brats themselves are competent but could use a bolder spice profile. Happily, the house mustard is excellent and lifts each bite. The rotkohl is handled very well, with a sweet-and-sour equilibrium and a clean texture. The schnitzels are where the kitchen flexes. The pork schnitzel is nicely done, but the duck schnitzel is the standout, remaining moist under its crust and pairing elegantly with a kirsch demi-glace that adds subtle sweetness. The käsespätzle on the plate is exactly what you want from this comfort dish: plush and creamy, with enough cheese to coat rather than smother. Dessert was the only real head-scratcher. We ordered the Zitronenkuchen, but what arrived was more like a cheesecake-inspired tart with a great butter-cookie crust and a pleasing, dense cream layer. It was subtle and texturally satisfying, though it could have used a brighter citrus element to elevate the dish. Final Thoughts: Otto's delivers a polished, contemporary reading of German and Austrian fare, executing many details with care. The highlights are the flammkuchen, the sides, and especially the duck schnitzel with that luxurious käsespätzle. Service is kind but can feel spread thin, and the pricing trends toward special-occasion territory. If you are craving Central European flavors, Otto's is sure to satisfy, but I can't fully recommend it without some reservations.

A really cozy brunch spot! Try to make a reservation if you can. They have a nice outdoor patio area that's pet-friendly and perfect on a sunny day. The breakfast schnitzel was delicious and the portion was huge, definitely shareable. The spinach artichoke toast was really refreshing; loved the side potatoes and beet salad. The Reuben is a classic; hearty and filled with corned beef. Everything came out really good, definitely recommend!

Otto's is a nice little German restaurant just a block off of Main Street in Fredericksburg. Warm and cozy inside, but we opted for an outdoor table on the patio as the sun was still shining! The patio was enclosed for the season and heaters provide ample warmth to sit outside in comfort. The food was good, service was great! Thanks to our server Calissa, she did a great job start to finish. She walked us through the menu, food, cocktails and sparkling wines, and her service was attentive but not intrusive! We started the evening with a couple of cocktails... the Otto's Spezi and the Vino and Velvet. The Spezi was herbal and good, a bit on the sweet side. The V&V was both herbal and sour from the grapefruit, also good. We shared a bottle of Hild sparkling wine from Germany, our first venture into sparkling wine from that country. It did not disappoint! It could have been served a bit colder, but the ice bucket bath added chill to the wine as we dined. Our food courses began with the sauerkraut balls and the Riesling soup. Both were delicious. The grain mustard/creme fraiche made the sauerkraut balls, and the plentiful bits of speck in the bottom of the soup bowl made for a tasty treat. We didn't think the soup was as "wine forward" as had been described, it was very good! Entrees of course included the duck schnitzel, as well as the braised pork shank. We could hear many of the other diners ordering the same entrees... with good reason, they were both exceptional, with leftovers for a midnight snack. It was a very enjoyable meal. We would definitely go back to try other items on the menu, which we understand does change regularly. Recommend Otto's for a fine German dinner in Fredericksburg!

Ask the Community - Otto's

Are there heaters on the patio?

They had patio heaters working when I was there in December.

Why I cannot find pork shank on the menu?

The menu at Otto's was small and not traditional- it is a well curated restaurant with less than 10 entree offerings when we were there. I don't think this for everyone but we absolutely loved it.

Is there a long wait on Saturday evenings since they dont take reservations? I am Wanting to come here for dinner but also not wanting to wait an hour.

Yes, normally on a long wait but stop by as you never know.

What is the average price for dinner and, say, two cocktails? Trying to get a price range since we have a larger group.

$75+. Depending on which meals and drinks you choose.

Does Otto's serve german pancakes?

Their menu changes a bit seasonally. Their current offerings of pancakes are Lemon Ricotta during Sunday brunch.

There's inside and outside seating as well as bar. You enter and they hand you the menus. Despite the red neon order here sign right next to the entrance counter, it's not readily apparent that you do indeed order there. And I noticed it wasn't just us waiting for someone to come take our order as we waited. You seat yourself so unless they tell you directly to order at the counter you could miss it. So when the red neon sign finally clicked in my head, I went over to order. But while I was ordering two more parties came up and asked if they needed to order there. So maybe some more clarity up front outside the sign haha I ordered the Cali burger, my son had a burger, and they had a fajita special that his mom ordered. We also ordered a pretzel. Obviously being a pub they had beers. Non/alcoholic was a limited assorted of coke fair. Only unsweetened tea. No lemonade. Pretzel was soft and delicious. My son's mom loved the fajitas and the beans that came with them. The burgers were also really good. Bread nice and soft. Patties a good thickness. We all enjoyed what we had. No fries though. You get chips for your potato fix. The staff was also very friendly. It wasn't too loud in there and we were able to talk easily. If you're hungry don't pass them by.

The brewery was the first place I ever had a scotch egg, my dad would get a small beer flight, maybe we'd get a brat, he made it fun. I'm pretty sure it had just opened back then. We got into town, checked in at the Trueheart Hotel, and immediately walked to the brewery because I was so excited. I probably went in to this with the unrealistic expectation that it would be the same as when I was a kid. It had a great start. The hostess was nice, and our server was, too. I wish we had gotten to sit in the back room with the long tables, We started with the beer flight and a scotch egg. The beer flight was okay. I was expecting really good German beers, mind-blowing, but these were just fine. A pale ale, an IPA, a flat porter were on the list, just not a memorable selection, although the red ale was good. The flight was a good price, though. For our appetizer, I wasn't expecting such a small scotch egg for $9. I mean, it was really small. I've been to several places around my area for scotch eggs, and they're usually $11-12 for two and they're properly sized. But we're on vacation and I wanted nostalgia so fine. It was delicious, and the creole mustard the scotch egg comes with was divine. More on that later. For our meals we tried both schnitzels. I was disappointed they don't have spaetzle, I'm pretty sure they used to. My boyfriend had the schinken and I had the jager. I don't like ham but his was infinitely better because of the gravy. The gravy on the jager schnitzel I got was heavy with some seasoning, maybe sage. It's all I could taste, and I couldn't just push the gravy off because my pork was fried to death. I barely ate any of mine. The sides we got (you get two per plate) were German potato salad, fries, onion rings, and vegetable medley. The fries and onion rings were great, especially when dipping in the creole mustard we saved from the scotch egg. The German potato salad is supposed to be sweet and sour and my boyfriend usually likes it, but this was way sweet, he wasn't a fan. The vegetable medley was good, but seemed really out of place as a side, normally with schnitzel you'd expect green beans or a salad or something, we got broccoli and squash. They did have a side salad, but it was $5. Not sure why a side salad couldn't just replace the two sides for no upcharge. I will say the rolls were awesome. At the end our server let us sit and hang out for a few minutes, he didn't rush us. We asked if they sell the creole mustard in bottles but they don't, so he said we could pay $5 for a togo container of it. We got probably a cup, so I was fine with that, I really loved it that much. We paid, I noticed he charged us $5 for tarter sauce that we didn't have, figured it was the only way to ring up the mustard. We left with our prized creole mustard. Cut to this weekend when we opened it to make a sandwich, and what we actually got was tarter sauce, so somewhere along the way he'd forgotten what we asked for. We live 200 miles from Fredericksburg, there's no fixing that, but maybe that's on me because I should have checked it. They really should sell bottles of that mustard, it's very good. Overall, it just wasn't the experience I was expecting. It's not the same, it's been over 30 years so I totally understand, and I did try to be fair with my critique. It wasn't great, it was just okay.

Since there are no business owner responses, the problems could be persisting. However, we've enjoyed our time here in the past so we thought we'd try it again. We got here at 5 pm on a Thursday and the place was mostly empty. That usually translates into better service and likely a better prepared meal as well. Sure enough, this theory was correct. We had two craft beers on the table within three minutes followed by Ruben fritters five minutes after that. The menu here is pretty simple with the expected German twist to it. We just stuck to a salad and burger. The salad was fresh and good, but the burger was pretty average and you have to add your own mayo and mustard. Even by adding cheese and mushrooms it still fell within the three star range and the fries were just OK. The beers were correct to style, but the hoppier beers were slightly tame. It's pretty much three stars overall, but the service was great so 31/2*. I'd still come back and try something else off the menu before the weekend and before 6.
