If I could give this place a negative five star review I would. This is solely for their customer service and less than stellar food. The server Zane could not even provide the basic service of refilling us water. I kindly asked him twice for water and even requested him just leave the jug at the table so we could help refill water ourselves. Only thing is... he would refuse to refill the water jugs and gave me major attitude when I asked him for water. If you're drinking wine all day, you're going to need water. It's hard to say how impressed we were with Otto's. This place is small but cozy. The menu is not big but they just seem to take a few dishes and do them well. It's been a while but my schnitzel was so big I couldn't finish. I need to mention our server Camiile. I counted 15 tables and she was working them all. While visited Fredericksburg, Tx., it was a must for me that I tried something German. I stopped by Otto's the first night I arrived, for a quick bite and a drink. I wasn't familiar with most of the dishes, so I played it safe and ordered the bread appetizer. Never had beet jam before, but it was pretty darn good! For elevated high end German inspired cuisine, Otto's does not disappoint! After consulting Yelp for some dining options in Fredericksburg, Otto's came up as a highly recommended spot, and I see why! First and foremost, it is difficult to dine here at prime times, so make reservations ahead of time! Otherwise you'll be facing a two hour wait. The menu is concise yet varied, offering different proteins prepared and presented beautifully. I went with the popular and recommended duck schnitzel. Yum! I've had regular pork schnitzels in town, and honestly they were disappointing. This schnitzel was amazing! The coating was crispy, the meat was juicy, and the spatzel was tasty as well! Food was just so delicious! We were excited to come to Fredericksburg and enjoy German food. This place hit the spot. Bread und butter isn't just bread and butter. I had one of the most delicious, comforting meals here. I ordered their chicken dish and I highly recommend it. It comes on a bed of mashed potatoes and has the most delicious mushroom sauce on top. I don't have a picture of it, but my boyfriend and I split one of their salads and it was also fantastic. Very unique flavors, cute atmosphere, comforting hearty food, and a kind waitstaff. We've been here almost a month doing our own sort of 'food and wine' tour so we've been to a few restaurants and lots of of the wineries. There is so much going on here that we feel like we need to do a separate video on our YouTube channel that just addresses the food and wine story here. Up until this point, in our stay (about 3 weeks in) we've felt like the food experience has been pretty mediocre across the board. The food has been OK, not great. The service has been great (with one exception at Pi Social - see that review) and the wine has been OK (We're from California so we have a different pallet for wine). Everyone has their experiences, here was ours: Here is what worked: We thought we had a reservation and it turns out we didn't. We were able to get seated for brunch right away at about 11:15am on Sunday. (I'd recommend going at 12:50 on Sunday - the place is quiet and the rush is over) The server that seated us said the restaurant just filled up so tickets might be a little slow We got our water and drinks right away Our cinnamon roll came right away and was delicious The service was stellar. I didn't catch the name of our server but he was charming and good at his job! My rose was delicious (yes I had wine for breakfast, don't judge) #roseallday the taste of the food was EXCEPTIONAL, creative and inventive (compared to all of the places here that we've been). We had the breakfast schnitzel, the spinach artichoke toast, the one with the long german name and the waffles. Here is what did not work It can get a bit noisy inside. Its 'family friendly' in that they have child seats for your child. There doesn't appear to be kiddy food selections on the menu. There was a child screaming while we were in there. Some of my food was not as hot as I like my food I hadn't finished my breakfast/brunch and I was wondering what I'd order if I came back for dinner! The food scene here in 'Fred' can be pretty expensive and its not really that good, so you really feel like you're getting the short end of the stick...unless, you go to Otto's! read more

For meals, the two schnitzels (Jagr and Duck) were extraordinarily delicious - perhaps eclipsing those I enjoyed in Germany. The chicken paprikash was a little on the salty side having been brined. Excellent service and food!!! Authentic German cuisine set in a quaint old house. The wine list was also wonderful.

A small house converted into a restaurant, across from the Pacific War Museum. The service was excellent and our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu. I enjoyed the flat bread which has a caramelized goat cheese taste and argula. My favorite was the duck schnitzel which was fried to perfection and has a great pairing with tart cherries and cabbage. We got the duck egg on top, but it wasn't worth the extra $4. The wurst plate was too heavy for me but had a good taste. The sauerkraut had a strong smell, but tasted ok. Wish we had a chance for dessert, but I was already too full from all the food. Worth a try if you are visiting Fredericksburg. read more

My favorite restaurant during our visit to Fredericksburg. Everything was so, so good. From the moment we walked in, we felt very welcome and throughout the night we had really great service. To start, I got the hibiscus mule, which was good but just a little sweet for my taste buds. My friends split a bottle of wine, which we were conveniently able to cork and take home with us. For food, I'll start with our favorite - the ricotta gnocchi, which was *chef's kiss* and my second favorite dish was the scallops - also delightful! We also ordered bread, salad, and short rib, which were all good too but I have to say the chocolate dessert rounded out my top 3 - decadent and delicious. The outside patio seating was nice, and this restaurant is located a little off the main street so the vibe is a bit more relaxed. Even so, if it's peak hours, I'd definitely recommend making a reservation because it's not a hidden gem. All that to say, it's worth a stop if you're in Fredericksburg. read more

The hostess and waitress were very nice and the locals seem to enjoy the restaurant. Leashed dogs are allowed on the patio which is nice. The menu is simple and to the point. The dining area is much like any dining area in a bar - casual. Some high top tables and some regular tables. The heirloom tomato salad was ok to good. The duck schnitzel wasn't as good as last time. The cheesecake was also just mediocre. The chocolate dessert needs help. Specifically, it tasted like it was just pulled out of the refrigerator (replete with a slight "refrigerator" flavor). It needs to be warmed slightly or served at room temperature. It was very hard to cut with the fork (no knife provided, though it needed it), it desperately needs ice cream or whipped cream to break up the density of the solid chocolate wedge. I can't believe I forgot to write a review for this spot! I have been here 3 times and I LOVE this restaurant. It is definitely my favorite restaurant in Fredericksburg. I've only been here for dinner though. First, reservations are a must. They tend to book up a few weeks in advance (esp on weekends), but the reservation platform (Tock) is easy to use. I absolutely love that they are dog friendly on their patio. Each time I've been here, they have been able to seat us promptly (once, they were even able to take us an hour before our reservation because we were so hungry). The freshly baked bread is absolutely delicious. Then, every time without fail I order the duck schnitzel and add a fried duck egg on top. It is SO GOOD. Every single detail on the plate has its place, and the different flavors and textures combine to make the perfect scrumptious meal. I have also tried the German sausages once. They were also very tasty, but the flavor is a little more monotone compared to the duck schnitzel. Highly recommend you try this place out! read more

Multiple tables received their food, got their check, packed up their food before we even got our food. It took FORTY minutes to get our food. Did not get checked in on during the wait. My husband and I spent a little over a week in Texas about a month ago, a few days in Austin, a few days in Fredericksburg/Johnson City, and a few days in San Antonio. Our dinner at Otto's in Fredericksburg might have been my favorite meal of the trip. First off, Fredericksburg's German heritage makes Otto's a particularly special place to have a fancy dinner when you're in Fredericksburg. What could be better than a great German meal in this town whose German roots are still visible in signage and culture and architecture? The restaurant is charming and comfortable modern (if you're looking for a more traditional German beer hall vibe, there are other places for that in town), and the service was fantastic (friendly, helpful, fun). But the food and drinks? Chef's kiss. We started with a mushroom soup (local wild mushrooms, mushroom stock, and fresh herbs), which I could eat once a week, and the Klopse (beef meatballs with caper gravy and beet jam), which was also really good. My husband got the duck schnitzel (delicious), while I had the Chicken Paprikash (really good - including the käsespätzle). Then we shared the Cambozola cheesecake (with candied pecans and crème anglaise). This was TO DIE FOR. Cambozola is a cow's milk cheese that's somewhere between a French soft cheese and Gorgonzola. Yes, you read that right. The cheese that they make their cheesecake with a little bit BLUE. And I am OBSESSED. Cheesecake can fall a little flat to me (maybe that's why the toppings and sauce become so important), but the slight funk in the cheese they use to make this dessert? It might have renewed my faith that cheesecake can be interesting and delicious. Our drinks were great as well (that wine list made it hard for me to choose). My first visit was a few years back, shortly shy of the pandemic, just as lovely. The cottage is warm with raw wood beams and eclectic art, surrounded by a cozy patio for warmer months. I had a difficult time choosing where to sit (kindly offered a choice), with so many inviting options. I went straight for the Schnitzel - Duck, that is. It was luscious, richly moist duck, fried to a delicate crisp, topped with the most beautiful sweet-but-tart kirsch (cherry) demi-glaze to contrast and clean up all that glowing umami. I would have spent my 5 stars on these 2 components alone, but I stayed for dessert. A few notes for consideration - the spatzle would be more satisfying cut thicker, and with duck cracklins cooked in, creating more harmonized flavors. The rotkohl was lovely, but redundant and in conpetition with the (far superior) demi-glace. Alex was the best kind of server, always present when needed, never overbearing, knows the menu and his wine list. A trusted guide and friendly companion! Alex convinced me to abandon my chocolate addiction for the Cambozola Cheesecake (you read that right - it's a bleu cheese-cake), and I about fell out of my chair. It IS remarkable. Set aside all biases and order immediately! The bleu is gently aromatic, honeyed, caramel, just the right amount of funk to anchor the sweet, slightly chewy density of a traditional cheesecake with a properly toasty, crumbly crust. It's perfectly balanced between tradition and breaking all the rules - French and American - in high-school, we might have called it Franglais. MARRY HER! Quick note - clean up the presentation, and this will look AND taste like Michelin. Can't wait to return & try more. Came here for our last dinner in Fredericksburg, and glad we did as we had a great experience. We sat outside in their front patio - service was prompt and friendly. The patio is also pet friendly. We ordered the scallops to start - well cooked, felt it could be seasoned just a tad bit more but still good nonetheless. For mains my wife got the duck schnitzel and I got the half chicken - both were very good! The chicken definitely exceeded my expectation. For dessert we got the cheesecake - very rich and creamy! Perfect way to end the meal. You probably won't like it if you don't like blue cheese. Overall, this was a nice "upscale" dinner in town. We had made a reservation for 2. Really it was us plus our 7 month old. When we arrived, we were told that our infant counts as another person so they could not seat us. This is in spite of the fact that there are empty tables everywhere. The woman working the from was very curt/rude and very much did not care to accommodate us at all. We ordered food to go and those empty tables stayed empty the whole time. The food was good. The Ruben was classic and perfect. I liked the fact that there wasn't too much meat.
