There was a time, years ago, when I often went to this restaurant, but gradually I quit going - it was always crowded and noisy, the service fell off, as did the quality of the food. There simply were better options to food and ambiance. A few weeks back I went to a small diner, and I noticed that one of the daily specials they offered on Mondays was a Blooming Onion. So I came back on a Monday and ordered one. It came with a house made creamy horseradish sauce - this proved to be a really nice item. After that I wanted to try the Blooming Onion at Outback to see if it was as good as I remembered. It was. It came out nicely cooked , brown and crunchy, and the blooming sauce a perfect mate. The cost was & $10.99 versus $8.20 at Arcadian. I came early on a week day so I was in and out before the legion of little, noisy people made an appearance. Stopped in around 8:30 PM--not too busy, but there was nobody at the host stand when I walked in. After a short wait, the hostess showed up wearing what looked like iPod-style headphones and seated me. My server was fantastic--quick, attentive, and had great table skills. I ordered my usual salad (no onions, no tomatoes), a ribeye cooked medium, and added grilled shrimp. The bread came out fresh and soft. The salad was brought out by a runner and showed up with both onions and tomatoes anyway. My server offered to replace it, but I just picked the stuff off--told her I was used to it. It was fine. Steak came out cooked just right with good marbling--tender, flavorful, and a little fat left on the plate, which I like. The grilled shrimp? Only four of them, sitting on a slice of bread. Not sure why they didn't go right on the steak. I've noticed the coconut shrimp option usually comes with more--and bigger--shrimp. As I was walking out, the hostess was rolling silverware and looked right at me but didn't say a word--no thanks, no goodbye, nothing. Still had those iPods in. It was the only thing lacking from the standard Outback experience, especially considering it's usually part of their service model to thank guests as they leave. So we decided to try Outback tonight for dinner. We hadn't been in years and now we remember why. Very disappointing. The waiter we had was very dry, and never offered us any refills. My chicken was dry, and the bbq sauce on the side didn't do it any justice. The only decent item was the baked potato, but even the temperature on it wasn't what it should've been. My husband said his meal was just "alright" and it had to be because he usually finishes his food and this time he didn't. The cocktail was really good, along with the sweet tea I tried that belonged to my daughter, didn't get a picture of her meal, which was wings and fries. I gave it 2 stars because of the good sweet tea and Cherry Limeade Cocktail. The noise level was a bit loud, not overly though.They need to work on their wait staff, and spruce up the food a little more in my opinion. Outback, we won't be back. read more

There are three rules I live by as a reviewer of restaurants. 1. The "121 rule"- if no cars are in the parking lot..ya might want to go somewhere else. 2. The "Dessert rule" the quality and originality of the dessert menu is often an indicator of the quality of the rest of the menu. 3. The "3 strikes your out rule"- I will give you three times to get it right. This Outback steak falls under rule number 3. I have been to this spot 3 times and each time it was a disappointment. The family and I went one Sunday afternoon and we were just frustrated. It took 45 minutes to get our food which was at best mediocre. Our waiter dropped an entire tray of drinks and the manger wiped up the liquid with 3 towels scooting under his feet and kicking ice under the table (Really dude, you ever heard of a mop?) They were totally understaffed and overwhelmed for the Sunday dinner rush. The only bright spot was the hostess who was super nice and attentive. Absolutely abbhorant customer service. Was told one hour at 5:45-5:50. At 6:46 it was you have to wait we have nowhere to put you, even though they had sat five to six other parties, of one less member. The excuse of short staffed worked well during COVID. Now it is apparently they are understaffed, due to employees knowing better to not work somewhere that takes care, or even shows any type of care towards their customer base. We came here with a group on Sunday afternoon and I can honestly say I haven't been to an Outback in 15 years or so. This was not my choice for a place to eat but we made the best of it. The redeeming thing was the service with our server, Harrison. But as far as the food it was lacking and a $15 burger was not worth the price, so it maybe another 15 years until I come back to an Outback or maybe longer or never. read more

The women's bathrooms had an incredibly strong urine smell, and seemed entirely unmaintained. The service was pretty terrible. When we got our food, we had to sit there with it because nobody had brought silverware. Our server was missing so we had to flag down random other wait staff and watch the food cool down. Nobody checked to see if the food was okay (it wasn't). We'll go elsewhere next time. read more

Well, tonight wasn't our night. We arrived before 8:00 PM and was sat promptly in a booth in the bar area. It went downhill from there. Thirty minutes later all we had was a glass of tea and no one to take our order. My husband asked for help and none came. So we left and went to another restaurant for dinner. Really disappointed the last two times we've been. Both times we ordered the bone in ribeye...and Outback is not shy about charging for that steak. It's expensive for steak you buy at a chain restaurant. Last time my wife steak was probably a solid 1/3 fat. It was gross and overpriced but we hoped that was an anomaly, because we've always liked Outback in the past. Unfortunately we didn't get pictures last time. But we did this time. My wife's steak was again almost 1/3 fat, mine was a whopping 1/2 pure fat. Now, I am not a healthy eater--like I would eat a deep fried Twinkie at a county fair--tell me I won't--and I do like a fatty steak, but that was really gross. Going out with my sons- DIL and 3 "Grands" we headed out to celebrate one of my grandson's 25 birthday!!! From the moment we arrived I felt at ease but it wasn't until we were seated and met our OUTSTANDINGLY BEAUTIFUL and AWESOME Server by the name of Darreka because the moment she introduced herself i knew she was going to take care of us as if we were the only ones that mattered and she DELIVERED I worked in the hospitality industry for over 25 years and I am very observant to people when it comes to customer service and I can say with 100% certainty that this amazing lady possesses a lost art when it comes to customer service!!!!! Did curbside delivery and checked in when the order was supposed to be ready. Sat in car for 15 minutes then finally walked in through the drive through doors where everyone just stared at me like "what are you doing" - yet there's the big order I placed just sitting there. This Outback used to be my favorite! When i moved to W-S, i lived in the apartments behind the Outback. That was 1990. I was single and ate here a lot. Over the years, I've eaten here a bunch and always enjoyed it. Haven't been for a while and it will be a while before we return. Our server, Payton, was excellent. I really feel sorry for all the wait staff. It was Veterans Day and management wasn't prepared. Outback was giving a free Blooming Onion to all veterans. It threw the kitchen for a loop! They just weren't prepared. Kitchen was understaffed. As a result, there was no bread when we were seated. First, they lost our call-ahead seating request. Fortunately, they were not typical Outback busy for 6:30 on a Friday night. We were seated quickly, although without silverware. Payton came quickly and took our order for a Rita, Fosters, and a Bloomin' Onion. The Rita arrived quickly, and they were changing the keg on the Fosters. Fine, I'll wait. Payton returns, apologetically, "turns out we are out of Fosters, is there something else I can get you? I'm sorry, out of Fosters at 6:30 Friday night. I could understand Sunday, but really, out of your featured Australian beer at the beginning of the weekend? That's poor management. We get our onion, and drinks. Payton asks if we're ready to order? No pressure. I order for us, steaks (one Filet, one Sirloin with the Shrimp on the Barbie, loaded potato, broccoli, and Brussel sprouts, and a salad. Sorry, no salad. What? There was a recall on our lettuce. No salad. Damn! I was looking forward to a salad. Another management issue - surely there were salad fixings available at Sams or Costco. Ok, we'll manage. Oh, do you still have bread? Another server explained "the onion fiasco" put the kitchen behind. I'm sorry, Veterans Day is not a fiasco. Management that didn't plan for it - that's a fiasco! Fast forward and our food arrives. Steaks were cooked to the right temperature, but sat on the pass too long. Cool, dry, and tough. The shrimp were like eating seasoned rubber bands - way too much time on the barbie. And the loaded potato had about half a load. No extra butter. I suspect the onion fiasco is at fault. Payton was, again, apologetic, and doctored the bill. I gave her a great tip. She tried, very hard, but just couldn't overcome the management problems. We always loved Outback, but as i have said before, there are too many good restaurants in Winston-Salem to come back here anytime soon. read more

A group of our friends chose this place today so we went with the flow. Food is to be expected for a chain restaurant, not very good. My plain baked potato was the best thing on my plate. I had such a positive takeout experience. My food was hot, fresh and prepared correctly. I didn't have to ask for bread, butter, or utensils, the take out specialist thought of everything. We haven't been to an OBS in a while, but my husband was really wanting their salad. We arrived a little after 5 (maybe 5:15/5:20) because we wanted to get there before the crowds and we wanted to run shopping errands later. We were told the wit was at 40 minutes bc they were short staffed. No problems bc we got there early and our daughter would eat about when we normally eat (6/6:30). After about 45 minutes, I go in to check to see where we are and am told it'll be another 20 minutes. Okay, so still puts us at normal eating time. 20 minutes go by and we are told they still don't have a table and it'll be another 20 minutes. We still had to stand and wait, getting frustrated that our 2 year old is hungry, cranky, and now we are approaching bed time. After over an hour and a half, we finally got seated. The service was slow, but our waitress was nice. The manager was nice too... but nice doesn't put food in our belly's. I ordered a medium steak bc I share with my daughter. It came out bleeding and I had to send it back. Then it just didn't taste the same. Flavor was lacking. I had finished my baked potato before my steak came back out. I ate a couple of bites and that was it. We boxed it. No apologies from management. No offer of a free app or something to get us to return... which is what we will not do. read more

We started with the fresh bread which was tasty. I ordered the filet and sweet potato. I upgraded to the blue cheese salad but it was bad. The lettuce was old and slimy. Our waiter got me a new salad and took off the upcharge. The filet was very tender and cooked well. The sweet potato was also delicious. My son loved his steak and mashed potatoes. My family went last night and it was a stark reminder why it's been years since I've been. I understand the challenges businesses face post-COVID and getting workers, but our first red flag should have been that there was an entire section of the restaurant that wasn't being seated because of lack of employees...and this was a Saturday night. Our reservation wasn't recorded, even after having confirmed it the day of. Once seated, it didn't get better. Our server had the personality of brick and the equivalent skill level. We ordered a Blooming Onion as an app (arguably the only redeemable feature of Outback), and when we asked for app plates for everyone, we were told they didn't have any because they were all dirty. What?! I ordered a steak entree with loaded baked potato and mixed veggies. The steak had some kind of cheese "melted" over it that more resembled a piece of plastic, the veggies tasted old, the potato tasted like it lived under a heat lamp. I took a bite of everything and pushed the plate away. Another family member ordered a filet and got a sirloin. Another family member's order of French Onion Soup came with some kind of breaded, fried cheese on top that you could have used as a hockey puck. Our server went MIA and we had to ask a manager for refills and another server for our check. My family NEVER complains...NEVER. The manager was nice enough to comp my meal, but only mine. We went at a really good time, about 5 p.m. on a Friday, so we got there before any crowds. The hostess took a little while to appear, but we were seated in a booth and our waiter appeared quickly. Matthew was so personable, friendly, and knowledgeable. He made our experience even better, and because of him, I gave this restaurant an extra star. We ordered a Blooming Onion, which was good but slightly overcooked. My mom ordered the Coconut Shrimp. They were giant and she absolutely loved them. I got a steak and Alice Springs chicken combo. I'd never had the chicken. It was so flavorful with mushrooms, bacon, and two cheeses. It came with a side of honey mustard, which was okay but unnecessary. The steak was the star of the show and they cooked it perfect. It was juicy and flavored with their 17-spice rub. So delicious! The loaded baked potato could've been loaded quite a bit more, but it was okay. I ordered a side of asparagus, which normally I love, but it was rather stringy. I ate the tops of the spears and those were tender and good. All in all, we had a really good meal, and the restaurant was clean and not crowded yet. But Matthew was fantastic!! Give him a raise! We were there Saturday, feb 15 2025. First off the service wasn't great, we had a drink and when the server bought another drink she left the old glass on the table. We moved them to the back. When the food arrived my plate was missing the mashed potato's, i had to ask for them. Both sirloin steaks were very tough and chewy. To the point I had 3 pieces in my salad bowl. My wife's chicken was good, the side of ribs I had were dry and tough. We got the bill for $104.00 the food wasn't worth it . It wasn't worth trying to talk to the manager, she was by the table a few times and seen the glasses and empty salad bowls and didn't make an effort to take them either.
