I love outerlands! This review is ONLY for their brunch, I have not tried them out for any other meals. My favorites are: the grilled cheese, trout toast or the breakfast sandwich because their bread is so darn good! You can add an egg to make it a little more breakfast-y :) They sell it by the loaf as well, but they run out later in the day so come early if you want it to take home! There is often a bit of a wait during peak brunch hours but it is completely worth it imho. read more

Outerlands is a dressed up "standard american" brunch/diner with high prices, small portions, and average food. The format is odd: ordering at the counter, tipping in advance, and then being seated and waiting for food that came out sequentially? If it's a counter service restaurant, don't ask for a tip. If it's a sit down restaurant, don't ask guests to map out the menu while standing on the sidewalk. The food was generally OK, nothing special, and not really very-well executed. Portions were small and it seems like they are just chasing food trends (ricotta toast plated with a piping bag, etc.). Espresso was great. BTW: The "Dutch pancake" on the menu is a Dutch Baby Pancake; a dutch pancake is halfway between an American pancake and a French crepe and is popular enough in Amsterdam that I suspect many of their customers were surprised it was misnamed on the menu. read more

You could taste the freshness of the ingredients in each bite and even in the cocktails. San Francisco doesn't often feel like a beach city but when it is warm, sitting on the patio of Outerlands feels like being in SoCal. read more

Might be my favorite brunch spot in the city. If you don't want to wait for a seat, outdoor seating is the way to go. It's actually not bad with their heat lamp set up, although I imagine it's much cozier inside. We got: Breakfast sandwich - This was so good. The potato brioche bun is what I wish all my breakfast sandwiches came on - fluffy but sturdy. Fried egg, arugula, aioli, caramelized onions, and avocado came together to make a delicious flavor combo. If you are looking for a warm welcoming neighborhood restaurant with over the top food and a charming staff, Outerlands is your stop on the N-Judah line. We were impressed with the friendly staff who genuinely want to be there, which can be a challenge in today's restaurant business. I credit this to Riley, the owner, who is present and willing to take the time to meet his guests. The food just adds to the deliciously warm environment starting with the chicken bone broth (served hot in their cozy mugs) followed by lamb meatballs on top of butternut squash purée (we had to place a second order because they're that good). The kale salad was so inviting I forgot to take a picture so I didn't make that mistake when our dinner entrees - cioppino and trout were served. We shared the rice pudding to cap off the night. This place was definitely a San Francisco treat delivered with warm and friendly authenticity. Came here as a family of 3 after a morning at the beach on a Saturday. We chose to dine indoors and the wait was around 15-20min. Though the menu variety is on the smaller side, the quality of the food is top-notch, and everything tasted fantastic. From the decadent French toast with ricotta cheese to the refreshing chia bowl and fruit bowl, every bite was delicious. Other must-tries include the grilled cheese, breakfast sandwich with avocado and pork, Dutch pancake, and the rich cappuccino. The dining space is a bit compact, but it adds to the cozy ambiance. Since it's on the smaller side, be prepared for a little wait during brunch times on the weekends. One unique aspect of the experience is that you order and pay upfront before being seated. Though there's only one restroom, leading to a bit of a wait, it's a minor inconvenience in an otherwise outstanding experience. The service and staff at Outerlands were incredibly nice and friendly, enhancing the overall dining experience. The little quirks of the restaurant only add to its charm. This is a re-review and more of an update for reviewers as it seems the system during weekend lunch has changed. Loved both the older and more recent versions of Outerlands (pre an post-ownership change and pandemic), specifcally loved the new system of checking in and ordering at podium for lunch/brunch. We generally drive across town to eat here a couple of times per year. We went this past MLK holiday weekend on a Sunday, and there was a lot of confusion from the clientele and little help from the staff. No check in/podium, so they seemed to have done away with that, but people were unclear if they were supposed to order first then sit (as most counter service places operate) or vice versa. Turns out you need a member of your party to grab a table, then you go wait in line to order and get a number. When staff were asked about the change, they acted confused as if they didn't have a different system for a long period of time. It's totally fine (if awkward, we had to call the person waiting at the table to read off the menu while in line to order), but seems like they should have some signage indicating the new system, as some ordered then had no table to sit at, not realizing they should have grabbed one prior. Or reacted a little friendlier when asked. They were also out of 2 or 3 items on the brunch menu, which isn't huge to begin with. It seemed like they were short staffed or struggling but they didn't acknowledge any changes or issues, so maybe this is just how it is now. As mentioned in my previous post, I really like their levain bread so ordered their levain toast during a recent visit. Toast served with butter and apple butter - both yummy. Also ordered the chia bowl - love the pears on top. Hubs ordered the Tuscan bean soup and grilled cheese w/ bacon added. Could never go wrong with the grilled cheese, in our opinion - a fave of ours. Soup was also flavorful, but quite filling. Outside seating only at the moment, but we happened to visit on a nice sunny day. Made a reservation online; the only time available for a weekend night was 8:30. We arrived early and were seated in the bar area. They rushed us through service, were clearly closing, and made us feel completely unwelcome. In fact, the server left before dinner was served. If service ends at 9 (which is generally ridiculous but I completely get it to be a san francisco thing unlike any other city), then maybe don't do an 8:30 sitting? Really uncomfortable. Went for brunch on Saturday around 1pm, was no wait to sit inside or 20 min wait for outside. You have to order and pay on the sidewalk before they will seat you which I wasn't aware of or expecting but all seemed to work fine. Everyone at my table enjoyed their food immensely. The stand out dish was the veggie grain bowl, the menu makes it sound kinda basic but the flavours were incredible. I had the grilled cheese sandwich, was glad we ordered a little gem salad as it helped cut the richness of the sandwich a bit. We enjoyed sitting inside watching the kitchen preparing the meals. A lot of care went into everything coming out. I'm not sure where the negative reviewers are eating in San Francisco that has better quality and taste for a lower price... Came here for Sunday brunch and was pleasantly surprised! The wait for our party of three was around 45 minutes. First off I absolutely love the decor/design of the restaurant it's farm to table/industrial vibes and I love how the kitchen is open and on the other side there's the bar, great design. All the servers were super friendly, I think the way that Outerland takes orders is super efficient! They basically have you order when they call your name for your table and then you pay and get a number and are seated so when you sit your food arrives shortly after. I got the veggie quinoa bowl, my friends got the French toast and the breakfast sandwich. We were a little disappointed that they were out of the Dutch pancake, but now we know to get there a bit earlier for next time! I added fhe pulled pork and egg to my bowl and it made it so much better! I think if you're looking for something more filling definitely the French toast or the bowls. The menu isn't crazy big, they seem to know what they are good at and then offer variations of that. I would definitely come again for weekend brunch, I would just come a bit earlier! read more

We drove and were able to find parking after circling the block for about 5 minutes. We put our name on the list and had to wait about 45 minutes to be seated. When they have a table for you, you order at the host stand and then sit down and wait for your food. All seating is outside, but we had a heater above us so we weren't chilly. I was pretty underwhelmed with the food. We ordered the breakfast sandwich, the Dutch pancake with house ricotta, and a side of bacon. The breakfast sandwich was very average - it was good but not anything memorable. We were unfortunately very underwhelmed with the Dutch pancake. Still one of our favorite brunch spots in the Outer Sunset. Been missing their Dutch pancakes a lot lately but sadly, they still have not reopened yet. We will hang tight until further notice but was told to keep checking their IG page for updates. The wait can be a pain here, especially during the weekends but we would often just put our name down, grab some coffee down the block and enjoy some of that ocean breeze while we wait. Plan ahead and come early tho as they do sell out on some of their popular dishes. Also, parking can be quite difficult too so you may have to circle a few times. Eggs in Jail and Dutch pancakes are definitely some of their more signature items but don't overlook their specials or baked goods. They make some killer salad here too along w/ their bread and their drink selections too, all delish! I especially love their ciders, their ginger lemon apple cider is my fav! It doesn't look like it from the outside, but the atmosphere is great, wooden ceilings that curve in unusual ways, relaxing and interesting music, lots of happiness/good spirits in the air from all the good food. The cooking is top notch and it seems like they try to wow you with a relatively simple/small set of flavors. Their homemade bread with salted butter was amazing, especially dipped in the roasted tomato soup. Homemade bucattini and clams was also sooo good. The best dish of the night - we agreed was "F__ing Fire" (F that's delicious :-) ) -was the trout. omg. The service is also top notch, and relaxed. We had dinner here on a Thursday evening. I had high hopes, bit it was.... unremarkable. The worst part by far was the awful service. Our server came to take drink orders, The couple we were with ordered a cocktail then came to me. I asked if they had non-caffeinated tea as we were outside and despitvbeing very cold, they did not have the heaters on. The server said they didn't have any, then ran off without taking my husband's drink order. Another busser brought the cocktails but couldn't take my husband's drink order. About ten minutes later, the server reappeared to say they actually do have herbal tea and almost scurried off again before I almost had to yell that my husband would like to irder a drink as well. We also were ready to order but she had to come back. We all ordered tomato soup with bread to accompany to start, and placed entree orders as well. The soup came and the bread never did. When they finally brought the entrees, our guests drinks had been empty for awhile and still no bread. We ordered them anotjer round and told the server we'd not yotten the bread with our soup. She non chalantly asked if we still wanted it. We did as we had really wanted it with the soup that was now ice cold. I had the trout which was nicely crusted and came on a bed of seasonal vehetables. It was all quite decent. My husband had the chicken which he said was "just okay". All in all, I wouldn't go back as we had such awful service and for a meal that was over $300, I just expect better. read more

I was worried when we got there in the morning because it looked like the tables outside were filling out and we had our pups with us. Not to worry though- you get in line to order, they give you a table number, and they seat you at the table to ensure that only people who have already ordered are seated. That stress being over, it was good to sit outside because the patio is on the sunny side of the corner. Food was served quickly. My favorite thing were the smashed Yukon potatoes with cracked salt. Wow what a delicious brunch! Even on a weekday morning there were a couple people waiting at the check in. You have to order and pay at the entrance and are then seated afterwards. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and we chose indoor (which was weirdly dark). The dutch pancake was yummy, and the bacon was just the right amount of crispy. We came out here due to its proximity to Ocean Beach and Golden Gate Park, but I probably wouldn't make the trip all the way out here just to have a yummy brunch. read more

The broccoli and cauliflower are just cooked , crunchy and well seasoned. The chickpea purée is very flavorful with texture. Please change the set up of how you check in people. It's very disorganized. My friends and I came here yesterday around 11am. The guy at the front told us the wait would be about 40mins for 6 ppl. They don't text or have yelp waitlist. You guys really should. My friend put a timer on for 30mins so she could check in about our status. We went down the street to get cup of coffee while we waited our turn. After 30mins we walked back to check in. The guy in the front said it be another 20mins because the table of 6 they had has not left the table but they are done eating... maybe politely tell them we have people waiting? ‍ so we waited and waited. She set timer for another 30mins. That timer had gone off. So again I think checked to see if our table is was ready. Sadly... it wasn't. The guy in front said it be another 20 mins because they are clearing the table for us. The table was finally ready. The host told us we had to wait in line to order our food before we were seated...? I never heard of that. So we waited in line for about another 15mins. We paid and tipped before our service which was really weird to me. Anyways, total wait time before we were seated around 1hr and half. Food I got the pulled pork breakfast sandwich it was really good. I love brioche bun, sauce and I wish the pulled pork was smothered in bbq sauce. My only complain would be I wish it came with side of potatoes. When I first walked up to the door, it was kind of confusing on how this restaurant worked so I will break it down (then get to the food heehee). I came on a Saturday at 11:30 and it was fairly busy. There were people littered in the front with menus in their hand. On the nearby window, there is a tiny QR code if you want to order to go. Then, there was a brown wooden table out front with a person standing there with a device to charge your credit card. On the side of that table is where the physical menus are. It appears kind of confusing because it's hard to distinguish who is in line and who isn't. Those with a number in their hand have definitely already placed their order. Another worker came out (now two by the table) and we just approached them and gave our order - kinda nerve wrecking tbh. Then, they instructed us to pay with the other worker, who then got our name down and asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. We said outside and got seated immediately. NOW, to the food: Sticky bun: definitely sticky but it didn't stand out to me. I've had better, but it's not like it was bad. Trout Toast: I was surprised how good this was. It wasn't super fishy at all and the mix of whatever was on top complimented the fish well. The bread was nice and crunchy, not stale at all. Dutch pancake: so I've never had a dutch pancake before so I was surprised when it came as like, a concave rather than a traditional American pancake. It was airy, tasting distinctively similar to egg. I just might not be a fan of Dutch pancakes so I cannot give this an accurate rating as this was my first exposure but I probably won't be ordering it again. Delicious brunch in casual, beachy inside with wood. We came in on a foggy Sunday around 1 pm and got seated for 2 immediately inside. We ordered lattes which came quickly and the Dutch pancake (add ricotta!) and mushroom toast (add egg!) for our meals. Both were DELICIOUS and unique flavors for brunch. The interior here is gorgeous -- lots of wood tones & very earthy. We ordered the Dutch pancakes, breakfast sandwich, and sticky bun. The Dutch pancakes were def my favorite - so eggy & fluffy! They were a bit smaller than I expected though for the price. The sandwich was also delicious and very cheesy. The ambiance is nice and young. It's semi-cafe-style in that you order your food and drinks with the hostess at entrance (outside on the sidewalk) and pay for your order and gratuity prior to being seated. The hostess that seated us wasn't the friendliest or most helpful. Once you order and pay, you're given a number stand to take to your table as you do at cafes, but you do get a waiter(ess) who serves your food and drinks. Of course taste is very subjective, at least to us, the food was alright (nothing amazing or memorable). Service was also alright: we had a tiny 2-person table and no one would take away the empty plates and mugs though staff would walk by our table numerous times. We even stacked them up so they could take them but no one bothered. But since you pay up front for gratuity, nothing can be done if you end up not getting good service.
