Great food, but horrible wait for brunch. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and the wait was upwards to around 1.5 hours. After that kind of wait, food just tastes great! Just kidding, the food was actually pretty good. I would much rather the portion size be a little bigger. read more

Must get there 1/2 earlier to sign in and don't worry, they already place you in tables according to your sign in order. I didn't think the food was that outstanding- a bit disappointed as it was very salty. The duck was good but small portions...it was so dark I couldn't see what I was eating but kept eating because I was starving...pork was fine and the pasta was more al dente but tasty...overpriced -- nice ambiance...bathroom is really cute! This tiny bistro place with its basic soup and salad bistro fare? Maybe the dinner menu is more amazing. Too much hype around this place. Food was pretty good. Smaller portions, nothing out of this world. The dutch pancake and bloody mary were yummy. Interior decor is really nice and ambience is solid. However, service was terribly slow and staff totally DGAF! I would rather eat at Beachside Cafe a few blocks down. read more

The indie rock aesthetic of the staff doesn't atone for not running the front end of a restaurant properly. One of the guys that works up at the counter let his cool friends bypass the wait list and go right to a table. We were next on the list and had already been waiting 20 minutes on a late Tuesday night. No other tables opened up. After 45 minutes of waiting we just walked out. A terrible system where you have to figure out to put your name on a list and no one ever gets back to you or tells you how long it will be or offer you a drink (because they have the host doing too many other things) and meanwhile you watch people who came in after you either scam the messy list or know the people behind the counter, get seated. Also, on the outside seating, you have to ask yourself if being freezing cold (outer sunset) with community blankets on your lap taken from a bin on the floor behind the door, is worth spending your money on. Rather than being with "the cool ones" I'd rather buy food from the Ferry Building and make it at my house. I will never go back. read more

This was the worst dining experience I've had in the past decade. It happened on the evening of April 9, 2013. The hostess was pleasant and seated us promptly. That was the best part of the evening. She handed us the menu, a very short affair: there are only about half a dozen meals, with a few appetizers and salads. We then proceeded to wait over ten minutes for anyone to ask us for drink or dinner orders. The place was busy, but not packed, so I don't know what took so long. There were three of us, and only one person ordered wine. A few minutes later, the waitress set the glass of wine on the table, and then turned and left without waiting to hear that red, not white wine had been ordered. I had to go after her and explain what had happened. When she returned with the correct wine, instead of saying she was sorry; she attempted to put the blame on the customer for not making clear what she was ordering. We then place our orders and proceeded to have our dinner conversations. During this time nothing was brought to the table: you get no bread or other accompaniments. This is a bare-bones dining experience. The waitress did not appear even once to ask how things were going. I should point out that we had a table near the door, and right in the "heart' of the seating arrangement, so I don't think we were in a "dead spot." The meal finally arrived, and my "pan seared black cod" turned out to have been boiled to within an inch of its life and when I took my first bite, I thought I was eating a poached egg. The consistency was a disgusting gelatinous mish-mosh, and I realized that I was not going to be able to eat it. This despite the fact that I am not a fussy eater: I don't think I have ever NOT eaten a meal put in front of me, and I'm sixty years old. I thought perhaps I could eat some of the other things in the bowl (it was served in a bowl), but there wasn't anything identifiable in the bowl, and my few attempts at eating some of the other flotsam floating in the bowl brought out the same negative feelings. We finished the meal without a single visit from the waitress and I finally had to find her to ask for the check. I did not complain about the meal, because that isn't her fault. I then looked at the check and it was $101 for three people with only one glass of wine. I live in Carmel, CA and am used to "big city prices," but this seemed excessive. I showed it to my wife and daughter, and my daughter immediately caught the fact that they had charged her for the glass of wine she returned (which she did not even sip). I found the waitress and she agreed to remove the extra glass from the bill. When the bill was finally presented, it was placed inside of a mason jar. OK, I get it, every place likes to have its own little affectation, but this one is brutally stupid. Stupid? Why, you ask? Because they also put your credit card in the same jar. With my sixty-year-old eyes and dim lighting, I didn't see the card because it was up on edge in the jar. I paid the bill, left a generous (under the circumstances) 10% tip, and we got up and left. We got a half block away when I heard someone calling after us. It was the hostess. Oh no, I thought, she is going to complain about the 10% tip, or the note I scrawled below the tip, explaining that the tip was small because both the service and the food had been so bad. Instead, she was bringing me my credit card, which I'd left in the mason jar. Finally, a positive experience!! So, this place has a very good hostess, who seats promptly and is conscientious about her job. The rest of the people, the rest of the food, and the rest of the experience were all pretty awful. One last note: my daughter brought us to this restaurant because she had been there for brunch a few times and had good food and a good experience. So perhaps the day staff and cooks are a different crew. read more

Final action that earned spot on my F-List was coming in at 2:50 (I find out they close at 3pm for 2 hours) asked if I could sit at counter? "No. At capacity. " No problem-can I buy a pastry or something to go? Ain't eaten yet today. "No." Me - "wow." Was a waitress for many years, never heard of simply refusing to sell food. At a restaurant. Wow. Even To Go? In a bag? Wow. Called. Left feedback of experience to manager. No response. As I expected. While I fully expected to wait in line for over an hour on a weekend (even made sure to prepare for this by getting coffee elsewhere beforehand), I was not expecting for my place in line to be bumped down in favor of seating the staff's friends. Finally had to make my way to Outerlands after reading all of the great reviews. Since everyone complains about the wait, my friends and I showed up 20 minutes before they opened so that we had a fighting chance on getting in during the first seating. Of course when we pulled up there was already a line, and once they opened we got seated during the first rush, but just barely. And by the time they opened, the crowd waiting was spilling over into the street. I ordered the savory Dutch pancake right as we sat down, since the menu indicates that it takes a while to cook. While we waited, we had their famous toast. Which was good, but it is still just toast. Finally our breakfast came, and the waiter brought me the sweet Dutch pancake with fruit. I spoke up about the mistake, and the waiter was very apologetic and asked if we wanted to wait another 30 minutes for them to make a savory version. Since we had already been waiting so long for a table, and then for the mistake pancake, I could not wait any longer (not to mention how guilty I would feel about the hordes of folks outside waiting for a table) and did not want to keep our table for an extra half an hour. So I ate the sweet pancake and it was fine. Our waiter was also nice enough to bring out a couple of slices of bacon in an effort to make our sweet Dutch pancake a bit more savory. It seems like Outerlands is yet another quality neighborhood spot that has been taken over by people from all over the city trekking out to get some decent brunch. The food is good, but this is not a destination place. It is solid food that would be great if I lived in the neighborhood and did not have to wait in line all morning for brunch. read more

This is the first time ever that I was disappointed here... I had the quiche and it was so blahhhhh. It was a beautiful creamy quiche but tasteless and tooooo creamy, if you know what I mean. No texture to it??? No real flavor to it? I almost sent it back because it actually made me feel sick. However, Natalie our server was so sweet, I didn't have the heart to put her through it. Beautiful distressed wood walks and ceiling creates touch of nature and near the beach feeling. Very creative menu always surprises us. Bartenders have been working for years there and nice to see restaurant staff remains the same. It confirms that management and restaurant owner are treating staff with respect. I've tried a bunch of these hyped up brunch places but so far, only a few have made me want to return. Outerlands is okay, but not worth waiting for. So, I've been wanting to try this place for a while. When they reopened, I was excited to finally get to eat here. But overall, everything was just slightly above average. The open face sandwiches are good, but nothing special (6/10). The dutch pancake was what I really wanted to try. It was good but didn't meet my expectations either. I was expecting a 9/10 and up, but it was more like a 7. Again, good, but tasted a little like a danish I could grab at a generic coffee shop. As we brunch lovers know, every single brunch place in the city has a long wait. Some are worth that wait and some are not. For a party of 3, wait was a little over an hour on a Saturday afternoon. For me, Outerlands isn't worth an hour wait, but I would still come back, possibly for take out if I'm nearby and craving that dutch pancake. read more

Eggs in Jail are life changing according to my son and husband. The adobo pork brunch option was too salty. The spiced chickpea dish was delicious and healthy. Bloody Mary was great! Outerlands is a small plates and soup and salad place with informal cafe style service. It's a great addition to the cafes and restaurants at the end of the N Judah, where I live. Why go Outerlands? Because food here is KING. The salads are delicious. The desserts are brilliant. The soup is almost always sublime. The bread - sour dough wheat? - is baked in-house. The mac and cheese is creamy and filling, and - though I haven't seen it on the menu for a while - the beans and pork shoulder was beyond reproach. Plates here look small, but I have always walked out satisfied. And by the way the beer menu here is also worthwhile. Come try it. read more

Long wait, but that was expected and it wasn't too bad as its right near a few cute coffee shops. 5 stars for the service and decor, we definitely noticed the little details. 3 stars for the food. Yes, its good and fresh, but not WOW. We had the Eggs-in-jail, just OK, bacon could have been crispier and the egg was too runny for me, bread was yummy and fresh. We felt like it should have had a garlic aioli or some other flavor on it. Also had a sticky bun which was good but not great. Lastly, the sweet dutch pancake, fine but definitely needed more sweet added to it, it really should come with maple syrup. Mimosas were good and strong. read more

My favorite restaurant in the city by a million! I would eat here every day if it didn't mean I would gain 10,000lbs from eating all of that delicious, home-made bread! I love that the menu changes and everything is right-off-the-organic-farm fresh. They even hand-make noodles for their pastas! The price is also great. Everything is well under $15 (normally around $9 for dinner, $7 for brunch) The brunch (only on Sundays) is KILLER. The dinner is AMAZING. There is a reason you're guaranteed a wait any day of the week. It's so worth it. I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me and it becomes one of their favorite restaurants after trying it too! I also love that it's supporting the "up and coming" outer sunset neighborhood. It's such a laid-back beachy feeling out there. Very different from the rest of the city. read more

Underwhelming food, dirty dirty salads. Went for lunch mid-week. Lots of stay at home parents and well-appointed babies. Cute place, homey crowd, good service, but seriously disappointing food. Not like, nasty, can't stomach it food. But just wholly underwhelming for the price and execution. Highlights (lowlights?): Pastrami sandwich -- Where's the beef? Seriously. The sandwich is all bread. And with oddly sweet slaw, it just doesn't come together at all. And it's just anemic. The salads... my side salad had several aphid-like bugs in the red leaf lettuce. My mom's salad was just plain dirty. Gritty, dirty, gross. C'mon. Server took the cost of the salad off bill, which was nice, but I'd rather have had an edible salad. This is a good place to go for breakfast/brunch if you want a light and healthy meal. There was a wait for a table inside when I went, but my friend and I had no problem sitting outside. The prices and portions were average. If you are looking for a filling hangover type meal, then this is not the place to go. What a treat this little place is! I brought my 2 friends here for desert and coffee, and thoroughly enjoyed everything about the place. There were wonderful smells drifting out from the open kitchen, which guarantee my return for lunch or dinner someday soon. The cafe decor is rustic, accented with driftwood making for a cozy, beachy vibe. There's also outdoor seating on the east side of the building, sheltered from the onshore breeze. The staff were friendly and helpful in suggesting decaf teas after we'd had our fill of coffee. We had the rose cake with plums and pine nuts, and it was fantastic. It indeed tasted like roses smell, which was a new enjoyable sensation for all of us. I can't wait to try some of the savory offerings next time I am in the neighborhood. read more

I frequent this charming little place at least once a week. I usually go in for brunch on saturdays and sundays. I always order the open faced fried egg sandwich. It's sooo good and really simple too. They take a thick slice of their house baked sourdough and melt swiss cheese over thick bacon and annaheim peppers and it';s topped with 2 eggs over easy. I gave this place one star and it was probably too high..If i ever want to recommend a place to eat to someone i don't like, this is where i would send them. We each had a sole, which came in a bath of broth that was disgusting, a finger of cold mashed potatoes, and a half bottle of a half sized bottle of wine. Outerlands is one of the reasons I consider the Sunset to be the most underrated neighborhood in the city. Everything about this place seems so real. I really like that they make their own bread, serve coffee from their neighbors at Trouble, and have awesome beers. I would give this place more stars if I could actually get a table. This restaurant apparently does not want customers. Their food is really good but I will never go back because of their ridiculous policies and terrible service. Their posted hours are that they close at 2:30 on Sundays, yet every time I go they close at a different time. Sometimes its 1:30, sometimes 2, but basically I drive down there never knowing if I will actually get a table. I guess the staff has someplace to be since there is a wait out the door yet they turn away customers. If you're going to turn people away at 1:30 then change your hours. NOT WORTH IT!! I wonder if the owner knows this is how they run the business...I run a restaurant and this is just ridiculous, it doesn't usually end up being good for business to piss off your customers on a regular basis. read more

The food wasn't that great, I expected better from all the reviews but I was very disappointed. The only reason why it is so popular is because of it's "hipster" atmosphere.
