There was a lot of hype about this place so I was excited to try this popular brunch place in the outer sunset. There are only a few selections available and lunch items are only available after 10am. The food was quite tasty but our surly female server really brought down the enjoyment of my meal. She didn't even give us her name and acted as though we were bothering her with our questions. She didn't even fake a smile once. We had the Cornbread Benedict (egg was not as runny as desired), cast iron grilled cheese sandwich with bacon, and brisket sandwich. Per the reviews, I saved room for the pastries and dared to try the strawberry rhubarb coffee cake, which was rather disappointing to me. It was basically some strawberry rhubarb topping on a cornbread muffin. Given the amount they charge for their food, I really expected a bit more. read more

This place is such a great addition to the sunset, thank god! If it were in the mission, it wouldn't stand out as much - the food would - but I love that this feel can be out here near the water. The tomato soup with grilled cheese was fantastic - salads were just enough for two - you HAVE to order the bread and garlic spread - literally whole garlic cloves with fresh homemade bread... Great beer selections - 750 of damnation is more than enough for two - and it has a nice and high alcohol content. We had our beers outside while we waited for a table because it's limited seating, but just ended up eating out there, perfect for a nice night. I'm glad they're finally expanding into that empty space next door...because I waited close to 2 hours for my Eggs in Jail for Sunday brunch and the weather was cold! So why the 4 stars? Well, I thought it was pretty worth it. But then again, I was really hungry. I'm sure the wait was longer because we had a party of 4, but it was alright to me because 1) the guy checking the waitlist, seating people all day, AND serving food was really hard-working, friendly, and considerate 2) Trouble Coffee Co was a couple doors down (and has a cute parklet in front!) and 3) the food was DELISH! You can choose a seating preference of inside, outside, or either...but of course, pick "either" for the best chance to get seated as fast as you can. It's too bad you can't really venture far from the restaurant (not even to the beach only a couple blocks away!), or else you risk missing your name getting called and assumed to have left. Lots of parties missed their chance while we were waiting (which was good for us, bad for them). I love the interior! The beach wood furniture, the plants, and the cabin-like, rustic feel really fits with the food and location. Eggs in Jail: VERY VERY good. I LOVE the thick slice of rustic crunchy toast (though parts of my crust were slightly burnt), the crisp (but not so much that it cuts the roof of your mouth) bacon slices, the lightly dressed salad, and my perfect egg enclosed in the bread...with runny yolk awesomeness that gets soaked up by the bread. My friend wanted a runny yolk but she got a fully cooked one so, I guess it's a hit or miss for each individual. I wanted to buy a whole loaf of their bread. My friend also got the hot lemon ginger apple cider. I had a sip (or more) of it, and it was sweet and refreshing, really perfect on a cold cold day. I like how they serve water in mason jars. I wish I tried the Dutch pancake, but having already waited for 2 hours, I didn't want to wait an additional 20 minutes for one (they warn you on the menu haha). I saw another table get one and it looked really good. I'll get it next time. I had the black bean soup today. It came at a very tepid temperature and was lacking flavor. Since it wasn't hot when it was served it became cold very quickly. Super disappointing. I couldn't eat the soup so I ordered the pastrami sandwich - it was good, but not totally redeeming. The bread and coffee were good - per the usual. I hope Outerlands brings its soup game back. After 4 occasions of drive-by failures due to picky hours, I finally made it in today! 20 minutes before opening, but I couldn't waste another drive by so I waited until 11am. It was everything I had expected and more... more being the portion sizes. I recently heard of the amazing bread, and I decided that the bread, in combination with the time and pride put into every sandwich and soup is what makes this place stand out. You can get a grilled cheese, egg and bacon, honey ham, turkey sando anywhere, but the audacity of outerlands' simplicity is outrageously delicious and a force to be reckoned with! The bread is thick, and I mean thick for even my mouth to be intimidated, I had to rip off my first bite of grilled cheese because i didn't know how or where to begin! That ridiculous combo of cheese and chewy, crunchy bread is so hard to find, especially alongside a perfectly smooth bowl of potato leek soup. Forget tomato soup with your grilled cheese.. hellloooooo potato leek! We also had the honey ham open-faced sandwich and WHOA! ExploOosion! They really got their ingredients down. Each on their own had great flavor, bread, ham, cheese, and mustard. But oh yes, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. I wish I could sing you praises, but you can't hear my taste buds exuberantly rejoicing "Hallelujah!" Previously I had only ever been here for lunch and brunch. Both of which were very good. So I decided to take a date here to try out the dinner menu. Outerlands did not disappoint. Our very kind and attentive server made some excellent suggestions so we started with the summer melon & padróns salad which had feta, aleppo, sunflower, and allium oil. Very light, refreshing, and a great summer salad. Next we split the lamb stew with carrot, parsley, and hazelnut. This isn't a traditional stew which is usually thick This stew had more of a very light broth with the lamb being incredibly tender. The nuts added a crunch to it. This was very good. For the main courses we ordered the bavette steak with corn, young onion, blue cheese, oyster mushrooms, and turnips and the salmon with fennel, watercress, summer squash, olivada, and wild rice. Both dishes were incredible! The veggies that came with the steak were incredible. I could've eaten a whole plate of just those vegetables. Finally for dessert he had the coconut rice pudding with apricot, ginger, and rum and I ordered the chocolate and honey forbidden rice, salted caramel, and sherry vinegar. These desserts were amazing. Especially the chocolate and honey. You get a slice of gooey rich chocolate ganache with this incredible sauce and the puffy forbidden rice. Incredible. Waited 1.5 hours for 4 people. Most of the table are for 2 seaters. Would not recommend for large parties. They could have combined some table for us but they didn't. We had to wait until there's a table that fit 4 people. After we sat down, there were no waiter that came and offer us water; had to wave my hand so the waiter can see us. By the time we got our food, the hostess combined the 2 small tables to sit a party of 3....like are you serious. The food is good but it is not the worth the wait. Over hyped for sure. This place reminded me and my lil sis of a cabin. And the waiters were very sweet even though it was really really busy. They were a bit off about the wait time.... our 20 minute wait became a 40 minute wait. Luckily, we were not starving... There was the option of sitting outside, but it was ridiculously windy and cold... My lil sis got the Hot Open Faced Pastrami Sandwich, and I got the Hot Open Faced Honey Ham Sandwich. THEY WERE HUGE!!!! and it came with salad. We were having a hard time trying to finish everything, but it was soooo good and we did not want to waste it. They put a lot of meat onto the sandwiches and a lot of cheese. Everytime we took a bite, we had to wipe our mouth because it was so big.... We were glad we did not order the regular sandwiches which had two slice of bread... cause that might not fit in our mouth. The bread they used for the sandwiches is really good, especially the way they toasted it. It was perfect, the crust part was crunchy, while the inside part was pretty soft. The pastrami sandwich was really good, I think they kind of grill it (or however they cook the meat), but it really brings out the flavor and makes it a little crispy on the edge like bacon. But i think the slices of pickle was a bit big, and I did not really like it with the sandwich, it was very easy to take out though. The Honey Ham sandwich was really good too, although the pastrami meat tasted better than the ham. But the cheese with the ham made it really delicious, unfortunately, I was barely able to taste any honey mustard. I think the cheese overpowered it. Still, it was amazing. The salad, that came with the sandwiches were a bit dry. I think it needed a bit more dressing, but the ones that had enough dressing was really good. It was a simple salad with vinaigrette dressing. We also had a Hot Ginger Lemon Apple Cider and a Latte. The ginger lemon apple cider has a really unique taste to it, it actually reminds me of this Chinese drink called "jiang cu" (). It was a bit weird, and too strong if you drink a lot at a time. The latte was good and it was really pretty too, because they make designs on it. My family and I were staying in the City for the weekend and we wanted to go somewhere special for breakfast. Outlanders seemed to be the best place in the Sunset and I was intrigued with fact that they had Dutch pancakes on their menu. First of all, DO NOT show up later than 845 on a Sun morning or you WILL have to wait an hour to get seated. Otherwise, put in a phone order and eat it elsewhere. Secondly, I drink green tea instead of coffee, so I figured ok, I'll just get my green tea there, so I can try to fully wake up while waiting to be seated with my fam. BIG MISTAKE: first of all, their green tea is Oolong green tea and it is NASTY; my daughter said it smelled gnarly and my wife described it best, "tastes like a cheap, nasty old lady's floral perfume." Secondly, the price was off-putting as well - $7.82 for a cup of tea to go! Part of the reason for the rip off was also part of my third complaint - they automatically add a 20% tip to anything you buy there . . . even a hardly drinkable cup of tea to go. Their rationale is that they want to force their clients to make sure their employees earn a livable wage. Believe me, as someone who used to rely on tips for part of my salary I get it and my wife and I have no qualms about paying a 20%+ tip . . . for great service and food, which we did not receive there. And why should their customers be forced to pay the 20% if they don't feel they received great food/service? All of this to say nothing of the fact that a poor tip can also be informative to food servers, e.g., your customer(s) really were not happy about thing(s) they complained about. So our breakfast comes and my Dutch pancake is delicious, (def order it with Ricotta), but I could see that the French toast everyone else ordered was not cooked properly, i.e., the bread was dry, i.e., the toast was not properly drenched in eggs and milk before frying. All three orders were the same - dry bread on the interior. Not only did my daughter and wife say that far less fancy places we've been have better French toast, but my 16 year old son would hardly touch his . . . and he loves F toast. End result: I paid $100 for an excellent D pancake plate and 3 badly prepared/cooked F toast plates. IF we go back, and that's a MAJOR IF, I'll bring my own tea and we will all order D pancakes. read more

I love this little local spot. I've eaten here twice already and both times the quality of the food, drinks, and service have been top notch. This is one of those places where you can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. You get a true sense that everything is made fresh and is organic and locally sourced. On the first occasion, we purchased a few of the homemade caramels and totally left them on the table on our way out. This is the most charming interior I have had the pleasure of dining in for a morning meal - it felt like we were inside of a chic treehouse. The food was great as well - jasmine rice porridge with butternut squash and sunny side egg was delicate, well flavored, maybe not terribly filling but that is also why I ordered an IPA to go with my brunch :D or you could always order the levain toast with tangerine persimmon marmalade. Mate got the eggs in jail which tasted as beautiful as it looked. We had been wanting to try Outerlands ever since we moved to SF but line has always deterred us. I've been wanting to try Outerlands for a while now, and I finally had the chance to try it with some old friends who were back in SF for a visit. We had a party of 6 which turned out to be a not-so-great idea... we ended up waiting for about an hour. Seating is very limited in this small restaurant, I would suggest parties of 4 or less. The menu was short and sweet which made decision making much easier! The decor was very rustic with a modern twist, loved it. I ordered the Open Faced Pastrami Brisket Sandwich with a side of Mixed Greens -- Pastrami, pickles, whole-grain mustard, swiss cheese. The ingredients were very fresh, and the combination of the whole-grain mustard with the pastrami was delicious! My friend and I also shared a pot of Chemex Drip Coffee, really clean and simple way to brew your coffee. I want to come back to try the cookies and grilled cheese! I had plans to get brunch with a friend this weekend and when he suggested outerlands he told me we would have to get there right at 9 or we would have to wait. We got here for breakfast around 9:15 on a Sunday morning (keep in mind that outerlands opens at 9) and there was about a 45 minute wait for a group of 4 and there was a huge crowd of people outside. So glad we waited though, because the food did not disappoint! We ordered: - the glazed bourbon doughnut with caramel and apricot - the rice porridge with pork belly, soft boiled egg, pickled carrots and furikake - the Dutch pancake, savory with bacon (of course) I was a little skeptical about the doughnut because I'm not a huge bourbon fan but the glaze had an extremely light bourbon flavor that was just sweet enough and it was still warm when we got it. The Dutch pancake was really light and fluffy and I definitely recommend adding the ricotta! The star of the show by far was the rice porridge. The pork belly was glazed and was a really good balance of sweet and spicy. The pickled carrots added some tang to the dish as well as some texture with the crunch. The furikake added some much needed salt to the dish. And the sauce on the rice porridge was rich and sweet, much different from other rice porridges I have had. Definitely a must try if you go here!! Also, the entire interior is wooden with gold accents and succulents, so ridiculously cute. I was so excited to finally go but I strongly urge you to go within the first hour it opens or something bc we went at 12:30pm (impromptu brunch decision) and we didn't get seated until almost 2:30pm. Portions are filling and both the eggs in jail and savory Dutch pancake were delicious. They rotate the fruits of the Dutch pancake because some of the photos had apples or peaches. Ours were fig and raisins I think. If you're on the bigger side, I suggest eating outside or something bc the table for two we were seated at made us feel like Giants. It is known fact that when sunshine enters my life, I'm just an overall, happier person. The crazy, fluke winter rays we've been getting lately are absolutely amazing and call out for beach walks, visits to the zoo and of course, lazy Sunday brunches. Outerlands was my brunch place of choice this past Sunday and I was blown away by it. The place had a beautiful, rustic, country look to it (including a hand cranked coffee grinder, hobbit holes for an office, and their LOVELY levain loafs above the cooktop) and a beaming, friendly staff. Though the wait was about 35 minutes, the staff kept us at ease, and maintained a great atmosphere despite the ever growing list of names. Throughout brunch, the staff were attentive, without being clingy and treated us like we were in their home. Went big with the brunch order and had the eggs in a hole, dutch baby, and the poached egg over cornmeal grits. Everything was familiar and simple, but executed to a tee. Loved the bite that the apples had on the light, fluffy dutch baby. Also, spooned up every last bit of the creamy grits, painted with gorgeous reddish purple kale and drippy egg yolk. Toad in a hole dish was decent, and definitely highlighted by the homemade levain and Zoe's bacon. Gingery hot apple cider capped off the brunch with a spicy sweet zing. Wait, I lie. The meal was capped off by purchasing one of the levain loaves for home. Who knew that Outerlands produced a fabulous, perfect toast bread with a tinge of sourness and an amazing crust. For $5, a deal you can't pass up! Outerlands is quite a find, and a place that I truly love from head to toe. Even if the sun isn't shining as brightly as it was this past Sunday, I'd have no problem spending my lazy Sunday brunch time here. This place is on everyone's brunch list for a reason. It's got a modern, earthy, 'instagrammable' vibe that still feels natural in Outer Sunset, and the menu contains some clear showstoppers. I wasn't in the mood for one of these items, but I still felt compelled to try this place when I saw open seating at the bar. My choice (the falafel and eggs - $14) was really solid, with hot, crispy falafel and well-prepared eggs. I wouldn't want to wait any longer than 20 minutes for it, though, and the dish was fairly pricey, which is why I'm giving Outerlands 3 stars. read more

This is a great place. Service is a bit off but the food is fabulous Loved their bread and butter. I guess the burnt crust adds to the flavor We enjoyed our wines. A cava and a wine from Spain The roasted vegetables were amazing. Served at room temperature tho which was oft putting The shrimp and oranges was interesting. Good but wouldn't order again. I got tired of looking at Outerlands in my bookmark list for four years, so I finally made the trek to Outer Sunset. I enjoyed the food, well prepared and the ingredients were fresh. Most negative reviews dwell on the long wait. Yes, it's true, Outerlands is one of the most popular brunch spots in the city. Overall, the food makes the wait worthwhile. I recommend the Eggs in Jail and Dutch Pancake. read more

An adorable little spot tucked away on Judah Street. Close enough to the ocean that you can hear the waves on a Sunday afternoon if seated outside. One of the best waffles I've had, and it's gluten free, so bonus points there. The pork belly sandwich is to die for, and all of it at a very reasonable price. The house coffee is perfectly brewed as well. Perfect spot for breakfast or brunch on a lovely day off. Emma, a server, is a warm delight and very welcoming. read more

Everyone comes here for their brunch. I, unfortunately, have only had their dinner since I live quite far away and am a night owl. But their dinner is quite delicious. The interior of the restaurant is of the rustic hipster type - a lot of wooden textures, low lighting, ceramic plates with earthen tones. The service is a bit slow, but the food is in contemporary style and delicious. I was with a big group of people and shared quite a few plates. The grilled vegetable plates were especially good, as well as their pork loin and prawns. Don't skip out on their bread because it is a good way to round out your meal with some substance - the plates are not that large. The cocktails are pretty well balanced as well, and is a good accompaniment to the meal. The only gripe I had was the portion sizes comparing to what you pay for them; we are not even in the posh parts of SF. Well, that and the slow service. read more

Went here for the first time...and I'm STILL dreaming about my Dutch "Pancake". It had a wonderful fruit fresh piled in the middle of what was a pancake soufflé. It was beautifully baked, was light yet filling and was warm, sweet and savory. My word, I want one now. I ordered some sparkling wine which paired beautifully. Had some friends come with me and everyone went nuts with their choices. They loved EVERYTHING. The portions are generous and we had delicious leftovers to look forward too. We tried the Egg in Jail, the bread and bacon was excellent but the egg yolk was a bit overcooked (another table seem to have gotten the one with the right consistency where the yolk just poured out). One may want to request that with the waiter so they don't overcook the egg. Beet and farro salad was excellent. Farro had a crispy texture that perfectly complemented the beat salad, with a bit of acidity. Great decor and mimosas were the best ever -- tasted like an organic version of an Orangina, super refreshing with a tint of the champagne taste. I had two of these and wanted more! read more

Came here yesterday, saturday, and it took about 45 minute wait before we got seated. Thank god it was sunny out so it was nice waiting in the sun. Once we got seated, u get the menu, and then u walk to the counter to order. The girls working at the counter were pretty cold and looked out of it. I was going to place my order with the girl in red and she was so dazed out that she told me to order from someone else. The other girl asked me, "are u going to order for the table?"...."are u going to pay for everyone?"....just weird to me..and yes to both. The girls were so impersonal..bad customer service..smile and being kind doesn't hurt. Ok..back to the food...I got the open face sandwich with ham and added 2 fried eggs on top...oh so yum. The bread was rustic and it had sliced apples in it which gave it some sweetness to it. It was very filling for me. My friends had the grilled cheese sandwich which she said was yum and the potato soup which was hearty and a meal in itself. The guys here were very cool and laid back and they make up for what the counter girls lack. This is why I deducted 1 star. I would be back, but once u pass the bad experience at the counter, the food and the guys make it worth it. read more
