I think I've only been to this Waikiki P.F. Chang's once--for lunch during the week--but it was a pleasant experience, since it was a normal weekday and the eatery wasn't too crowded. I went to the other P.F. Chang's location before (close to Tango's Café in the Ward area), but never to this Waikiki restaurant prior to this visit ... just because I try to avoid Waiks, if possible. But this P.F. Chang's wasn't too hard to find because it was close to my beloved Cheesecake Factory, if I remember correctly.
There's a lot to choose from on the menu, but the BF and I chose the "P.F. Chang's For Two" option--though it seemed pricy--because you basically get a full-course meal, and a good amount of menu items are available to choose from. I was SUPER stuffed after the lunch--this is probably a better dinner option--but I did enjoy everything we ordered.
Here's what we got, as well as items I want to try in the future:
"Garlic Prawns": This limited-time only dish features prawns gently cooked in a rich garlic butter sauce accompanied with a pickled pepper slaw. I would probably skip the slaw, but those garlicky prawns sound absolutely delicious.
"Kim Chee Fried Rice": I like fried rice better than regular rice, and though I'm not the hugest fan of kim chee, this savory concoction sounds intriguing. It includes pork fried rice seasoned with sweet and spicy kochujang sauce and locally made kim chee topped with two over-easy eggs. I would probably ask about the spiciness level of this dish before ordering it--since I can't handle super spicy--but I wouldn't mind trying this medley, since it does include pork and I love anything that's topped with over-easy eggs.
"Dynamite Shrimp": This crispy shrimp comes tossed with a zesty sauce. Again, I would probably ask about the spiciness level before ordering it, but this is one entrée that I wouldn't mind trying.
The "P.F. Chang's for Two" meal comes with a cup of soup, one starter, two entrees and one dessert. It's a pretty good deal for what you pay for (lots of deals include EITHER an appetizer or dessert, but with this one, you get both).
Cup of soup: I went with the "Egg Drop Soup," which featured a velvety broth with julienne carrots and green onions. Though I didn't finish all of my soup, I did like the light yet flavorful broth.
Starters: We went with the "Chang's Lettuce Wraps," which is the eatery's signature app. It includes wok-seared chicken, mushrooms, green onions and water chestnuts served over crispy rice sticks with cool, crisp lettuce cups. I'm not a fan of green onions or water chestnuts, but I put those dislikes aside to try this app. It really was refreshing and tasty, and I really did like the chunks of chicken. I'd definitely order this appetizer again, but next time, I want to try the "Crab Wontons," "Dynamite Shrimp" or "Spring Rolls," which are crispy, Vietnamese-style rolls served with Bibb lettuce leaves for wrapping, cilantro and sweet chili sauce. I'm such a sucker for spring rolls, and I look forward to trying the version at P.F. Chang's one day.
"Crispy Honey Chicken": I got this for my entrée--the BF decided to order something else and just have a taste of my entrée, since I am the pickier of us two--and I'd definitely order it again because I loved the flavor. It features lightly battered chicken that's served in a sweet, flavorful sauce over a bed of crispy rice sticks. You can even opt for "Crispy Honey Shrimp" that's lightly battered and tossed in a flavorful sauce. If I were craving shrimp, I would get the shrimp option, but I loved the tender pieces of chicken that were sufficiently coated in that sweet, honey glaze.
"Ginger Chicken with Broccoli": The BF decided on this entrée, which included sliced chicken breast tossed with ginger and green onions and served in a ring of steamed broccoli. If you like ginger, you're sure to like this entrée. I tried a bit of the chicken, and I did enjoy its flavor (I like ginger, but not super strong ginger, so this entrée was okay). The BF really enjoyed this dish because it was a good mix of proteins and veggies (broccoli is one of his favorite vegetables).
Dessert: For our dessert option, the BF wanted to try the "Banana Spring Rolls," which included six warm, crispy bites with coconut-pineapple ice cream and was drizzled with caramel and vanilla sauces. I was hesitant at first because I don't like coconut OR pineapple flavors--and I'm not the hugest fan of bananas, too--but since the fruits came fried in that crispy, spring roll exterior, that made it more appealing. I have to admit, this is a unique dessert that IS worth trying, if you like all of its components. I had one of the spring rolls just to taste, but the BF ended up eating most of the dessert. The ice cream flavor was light, but I knew I wouldn't like it just because it featured two flavors I already wasn't a fan of. I did, however, enjoy the sweet taste and crunchy texture of the banana spring rolls. read more
