There is a minor marketing challenge for a restaurant specializing in cuisine that most passers-by will not know anything about. Let me bring you up to speed. Myanmar shares borders with India and Thailand. Let that sink in. The food will be savory, rich, and some are spicy, it'll be different flavor combos than you've had before (always a good thing for a foodie). The gentleman that's usually serving is the owner and he'll happily recommend his favorites such as the tea salad. I had a savory pork belly stew which was delicious. I love spicy food and nothing we ordered was very spicy. I think next time I go I'll see what they have that's hotter. Do yourself a favor next time you're about to go out to India Palace, jump next door to try Pa Lian instead. I want them to stay in business so I can go back again and again. read more

Only Burmese restaurant in IL and it's a great one. Took us back in time to our travels to Burma in 2015. Kind staff and quick service for takeout. We ordered a lot so we could have leftovers after the hour drive just for this visit. Highlights: Tea Leaf Salad - classic Burmese dish and a must order Tofu Salad - Burmese salads are always a highlight. Didn't get the green papaya salad this time around but that's always great as well. Yangon Style Pork - almost like a sweet and sour pork served with rice Shan Noodles - lots of great flavor and another classic Burmese dish. Mohinga - National dish served every morning during our trip. Fish soup with noodles, egg and a good spice. Saved for next day breakfast and warmed up well. Rare to find this cusine in the US and we always take advantage of it when we can. Nothing to be afraid of here. Burma is bordered by Thailand, China, India, Bangladesh and Laos which influence the flavors and dishes from each region of the country. Change things up and try this great restaurant. I ordered the chicken curry and it was so flavorful and fragrant. The curry was perfectly spiced and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The rice was also cooked perfectly and went so well with the curry. I also ordered the tea leaf salad, which is a traditional Burmese dish. It was so refreshing and had a great balance of flavors. The tea leaves were perfectly cooked and the salad also had a good amount of crunch from the peanuts and fried onions. Overall, I was really impressed with Pa Lian's Burmese Cuisine. I was born in Burma, and grew up eating real Burmese food my entire life. Usually, the only way to get real Burmese food is to cook it at home with the family. Pa Lian is the only Burmese restaurant that I know of in the entire Midwest. With a real Burmese chef/owner, this is the ONLY place I would or could eat Burmese food away from home. I've eaten here a few times, and ordered the main national dishes of Burma - Mohinga, Ohno Kauk Swe, Laphet Thauk, etc. It's all really good, and very authentic. And just so you know, real Burmese food is not like Chinese, Thai, Indian. There are some similarities, but it's not fair at all to lump them all together. Burmese restaurant had great flavors and combinations I've never experienced- and I lived in Asia for years. It reminds me of Mika's place back when it opened in Carol Stream and I first tried Vietnamese food in the 80's. The owner waits on your table and makes great recommendations from the menu. The salad was fresh with Mung beans and herbs. The stewed pork melts in your mouth and the sauce has just enough heat to finish off over rice. A friend recommended this Burmese restaurant, so we gave it a try for lunch. It was moderately busy, and the other diners looked like they had been there before and were regulars. A good sign! The owner was friendly and said a lot of people don't know what to order. He helped us select the Laphet Thote (tea leaf salad) and two appetizers, the fried chickpea patties (which tasted a little like cornbread) and the samosas (filled with potato and some egg). We also ordered B08, which he said had "a little kick" to it, and a pot of green tea. My husband is not a salad fan, but he loved the crunchy texture of the dried chickpeas and tea leaves in the salad and that dish ended up being one of our favorites. The appetizers were delicious, and with the main course and the free broth, it was plenty of food for lunch. The food was somewhat similar to Thai food, but less overtly spicy (although still very tasty) and with more of an emphasis on chickpeas. The ownership and service here is incredible. The food is delicious as well. These people stayed open an hour past their closing time in order for me to pick up my food. OMG! We just finished eating our takeout from here and we ate it in the parking lot because we couldn't wait to dig in. We got the tofu and samosa appetizers and holy cow were they good! The red sauce that came with it put them over the edge. For entrees we got 2 noodle dishes- Shan noodle and nan-gyi-thoke and they were both amazing! We also got a ginger salad and it was so fresh and crunchy. All the flavors we tasted were like nothing I've had before and on top of that the owner was the nicest person and we received excellent customer service. This restaurant is a hidden gem! Nestled in a huge strip mall, Pa Lian could get overlooked, but don't let that happen. It has superb hand crafted cuisine by one of the owners and served by the other owner! The Tea leaf salad was very generous, plenty to share with up to 4. The 2 entrees we enjoyed were delicious; Shan Noodle (B-08) and Beef Picued (E-11) with medium spice. There was a $2 charge for the rice but worth it to soak up all the flavorful sauce in this dish. It was our first time eating Burmese food. We found it similar to other south East Asian food but clearly a distinct cuisine of its own. We had the green tea salad which was refreshing and crispy. And the Hlsa fish, wonderful, very tasty. Nothing was overly spicy but there is a wonderful house spicy sauce that can be added. If you like cheesecake the green tea is a nice choice for a sweet taste. Restaurant is very clean, owner is very gracious and welcoming, and the food is fresh tasting and feels clean and easy to digest. We will be returning soon ! read more

If you're even considering coming here by looking at this review, I say what are you waiting for?! Pa Lian is a must-try. The food is very authentic - trust me, I'm Burmese. It tastes like what my parents make at home and what you'd get back in Burma. I can understand how the menu could be a little intimidating because it's an unfamiliar cuisine for most, but the owners are very friendly and will take their time to explain the menu and suggest items for you. My personal favorites are the Rah-Khine Noodle Soup, Mohingar, and Pickled Tea Leaf Salad. These and the Burmese-Style Samosas were the dishes I had here, and they were so good! If you're looking for more options, some of my other favorites are chickpea fried rice, nangyi thoke, coconut chicken noodle soup, kyay oo. You can't go wrong with a curry dish either. It was a serendipitous culinary adventure as I stumbled upon finding Pa Lian Burmese Restaurant. During college, I met a wonderful Burmese friend who introduced me to Burmese food. It has been several years since I've had Burmese food and was so looking forward to eating at Pa Lian. I came in between the lunch/dinner time. I got to chat with the owner Taw. He gave me recommendations on what to order. I was so excited that I called my husband about my new foodie discovery! My husband & I enjoyed the goat curry & tea leaf salad.
