TLDR: I won't be back for hotpot... maybe back to try their regular dishes though, but iffy. Pagoda is currently doing dine in with limited seating. They are social distancing, limiting capacity, and staff are wearing masks. Pagoda has AYCE hotpot for $19.99 or AYCE plus unlimited sake for $29.99. We opted for the AYCE hotpot. We were told portions were big, unfortunately I should've listen as I ordered TWO orders of beef. Now here's where it's so meh. I read both the Chinese and the English on the menu. I understand that you have to pay extra for that fatty beef brisket style meat so of course, we go for the regular beef. I expected it to be similar to round eye beef that you'd get in your pho - the kind that's not too much marbling and will get tough when overcooked. Well, that's not what you get. You get their starch slurried meat that they probably use to cook your beef with broccoli. It wasn't terrible, but also just wasn't what I was expecting. Yes, it doesn't overcook and you can continue to let it boil but... it just wasn't enjoyable. The vegetable selection is also limited to what they use in the kitchen - things like Chinese broccoli or the Shanghai bok choy are not typically cooked in hot pot - again, things used to make your entree. Soooooo... that about sums up why I wouldn't be back for their hotpot as they are not built to serve hotpot. OH, and the sauce... the limited sauces, ugh. I got a bowl of garlic in sesame oil, literally, and satay sauce. Sauce should be, but not limited to, SOY SAUCE, cilantro, green onions, jalapeños, sesame seeds, peanut sauce, sesame oil, satay sauce, chili oil, etc. It should be a range but at minimum... soy sauce... but alas, the sauce here is more limited than my fiancé's pantry. If you don't really know what it is or just want to eat a lot, then sure, this could be for you. If you know what hotpot is, you typically eat it, etc, then pay extra instead. read more

Wow, I am totally in love with this place. I have been here couple times but their preserved eggs congee is unbelievably good! I was there to meet up with a group of friends and we ordered most of the things on their happy hour list. Their food is amazingly good. I had chilled pork, rice porridge with duck eggs (the best!), watercress and kimchee...great combo btw! They do take out, too! What they don't have is FORTUNE COOKIES, so don't ask for one... lol...well that's good anyways because it is not just a Chinese restaurant but also they serve Malaysian, Japanese, Korean and Thai dishes...interesting! The staffs are very helpful and knowledgeable with their menus. Fast service! The space is huge and you will see a lot of college students sipping on hot tea or eating congee...or you might see me doing that too!:) This place is located in dinkytown. (Pandemic Era Review) This place is amazing! I stopped by because I saw they had mapo tofu on the menu, and I was extremely pleased with my experience. The restaurant is a classy number right by the University, but don't be fooled by it appearances. This place is great food at reasonable prices. I ordered mapo tofu and beef chow fun for takeout--limited indoor seating to comply with distancing. It took about 10 min for my food to be ready, which was pretty fast for a walk in order. It was enough time for me to wander over to the connected tea shop, Feng Cha (but more on that in a review for them). All the staff were incredibly polite and helpful, wore masks and gloves. Great customer service and good cleanliness standards. My food was handed to me bagged and contained. Now, when I got to where I was eating, I was shocked. The amount of food was enormous! For what I paid, I was expecting probably a third of what I actually got. I've got enough leftovers for days of meals. The mapo was great! Super spiced, with Chinese five spice and cinnamon coming through really strongly. They used a softer tofu than what I was expecting, but it balanced really nicely with the ground pork for an unexpected mouthfeel. It also came with rice, so I didn't miss out on any of the sauce. Loved the beef chow fun! Smooth noodles, tons of beef and onions too! Breakdown: Cleanliness-4/5, Service-5/5, Food Flavor-5/5, Food Size-5/5, Price-5/5. Overall, this place gets a 5/5 for me! So I always come to this location to pickup my favorite bubble tea called Feng Cha Tea and finally decided to order takeout from this restaurant. I saw they had a check in offer for free cream cheese puffs. I got the Kung Pao beef dinner combo which is an amazing deal that for $9 you get white rice, a choice of soup (egg drop or hot and sour) and a choice of egg roll or cheese puffs. I chose the hot and sour soup and egg roll. The service was very friendly, fast and efficient. The dinner was an unbelievable deal for under $10 with tax. The beef was tender, there were lots of peanuts and sauce, chunks of bell pepper and onions and an average serving of white rice. I would definitely come back here! read more

For example, Jasmine Tea is explicitly listed at $.50. We ordered it, and the lady charged each $1.00. This is unfair, and does not make sense economically. Jasmine leaves is sold for a huge bundle at a local Asian grocery market for $5-6 dollars. Pagoda cannot fool us no more. The meal was not even good as well, as the portion of the noodles and congee were considerably smaller than Hong Kong Noodles. My wife and I had a voucher for $40 worth of dim sum from a place we haven't been to in awhile. Dinkeytown. Dinkeytown is the small neighborhood north of the U of M campus in Minneapolis. We parked in the back and sat down. We sat down and they asked us if we were there for Dim Sum. In a meek voice, I said "Yes" BAM DIGGIDLY DO DAH! A hundred plates appear in front of you with multiple options. Very over stimulating a lot unnerving, I would have liked three seconds to order my Tsing Tao large beer and talk to my wife and relax. It was crazy how fast they were all over you to choose, so this was minus one star. I ordered the shark fin dumplings (Came out cold, a big no no, and really bland), some tripe, again, really bland, but what do you want from cow intestine? The squid was really good, I put a ton of the chili paste on everything, since nothing really had any flavor to it. I ordered some pork steam rolls too. I have had these in San Francisco and Seattle and they are a thousand times better. Then I tried my wife's shrimp dumplings. Amazing flavor. I can't figure out why they can't do that on everything. I have seen in past reviews, that it is like the McDonald's of Dim Sum, I didn't want to believe it, but I have had much better Dim Sum, and they don't attack you when you sit down. The dim sum is very good here and there's such a plethora to choose from. You can pay for individual plates or all you can eat (which is best) when you're hungry or with a group. I've been a patron for over 10 years here (I'm not affiliated with the U of M at all). The quality of food is always exceptional! It never changes for the amount of times I've eaten here. The entrees are great and are large portions. This is meant to be eaten with a couple/several people at the table. Justin (owner) has been very accommodating and is such a lovely human. Vicen (manager) is a humble and kind person. The rest of the staff work incredibly hard and are trained very well. Such a great place to experience several regional Asian cuisines from the menu. For the "Faint of Heart", there are Americanized versions of food as well. But please, try and explore new food here! read more

Lobster over rice is the only thing you will ever need to order from Pagoda. It has been over a month since I had but I still drool every time I think about it. The dish came with dried kernels of rice and topped with stir-fried lobster pieces. When it was served, mouthwatering broth was poured all over the dish. If eaten immediately, it was more like a soup with crunchy rice. As it sat, the whole eating experience changed. The rice slowly soaked up the broth and turned into a smooth congee but equally delicious! The mapo tofu was good as well. It had a strong spicy pepper flavor and not for the weak of heart. However, it was lacking in other flavors and could have used a little more salt for extra oomph. read more

This is our second time here... there was a groupon for $50 worth of food for 2 people. We decided to do the hot pot a la carte. Loved it!! We ordered enough for the both of us, and left satisfied and full. There's a variety to choose from with respect to food, the staff was friendly and prompt with bringing the food out and filling up water, and it tasted good. We also ordered a mango smoothie! Tasty! A few things you have to think about is the parking is tight. They have a parking lot in the back, two short rows of spots, but it fills up quickly. You can take a chance and park in the mcdonalds lot, but they warn you not to, cause your car might get towed. The other thing is the place does get busy on the weekends. If you get there early enough you prob won't have to wait for a table, otherwise esp holidays, expect to wait. We did try the weekend dim sum buffet and the all you can eat hot pot. Both were pricey. This was such a great Chinese spot, actually the first one I've gone to in the cities. Our group had purchased a Groupon that allowed us to get $50 worth of food for just $25. We had an appetizer of fried rice and the I ordered sweet and sour chicken (substitute lo mein noodles for $1.00) that came with egg drop soup and two delicious cheese puffs. Everything tasted great and the portions were large enough that I had enough for lunch the next day. I tried my friends' dishes and really enjoyed the broccoli beef and the sesame chicken! Located in the heart of Dinkytown, it's a great place to go for lunch, dinner, and happy hour - as well as celebrate any and every event! I can't even count how many times I've come here for birthdays or post-student group events to drink/eat. Pagoda is always willing and able to accommodate large groups, just make sure you make a reservation! If possible, it's easiest to get here by walking/bus if you live on or close to campus. However, for those who live outside the area, they do have a free but small parking lot with approximately 8-10 spots (as long as people don't park like idiots) reserved for Pagoda customers. If the lot is full, there are plenty of parking meters in Dinkytown. Service can be slow at times, depending on when you go. However, everyone is very friendly! You can also be sure that Mama Pagoda (she's the co-owner) will take care of you :) In my opinion, this is one of the best places for Happy Hour around the University of Minnesota campus. They have all day happy hour on Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as 9pm-close every evening. You can "Double-Up" (buy one, get one for $0.99) on select appetizers and drinks. They also have great lunch combos between 11am-2:30pm for only $7.50 and you get a choice of 5 different sides/entrees. Every time I come here, I always order the same two things: - Salt & Pepper Wings - ask anyone who comes here frequently and they can vouch that Pagoda makes the best fried chicken wings! It is delicious at all times of the day. It can be ordered spicy or not but in my opinion, spicy tastes best - Ma Po Tofu - again, Pagoda makes the best! However, I have found that it tastes best when ordered earlier in the day as opposed to during late night/happy hour These other dishes are also worth a try: - Seafood Tofu Soup - served in a large ceramic bowl, I would suggest sharing with a large group - Salt & Pepper (fried) Squid - not really a fan of the batter though - Beef Brisket Hot Pot - Pork Belly Hot Pot They have dim sum and hot pot as well. I haven't tried the hot pot but according to their advertisements, it's $19.99 per person - not sure if it's all you can eat. As for their dim sum, I think it's alright but it's the closest place to campus that serves it. However, if I had a choice, I would go elsewhere. I have lived near dinkytown for five years, yet this is the first time I've stepped foot into Pagoda! They have a large menu with dim sum on the weekends. The service was very friendly, prices are very reasonable, and their dinner special price can't be beat. $8 for a soup, rice or noodles, an entree, and an appetizer. The food was great - it's greasy American Chinese food which sometimes is exactly what you're looking for. I ordered the tofu & vegetables with lo mein noodles. Only one hiccup in service - my boyfriend ordered the beef and broccoli and the chicken and broccoli was brought to him. I love Pagoda! Dumplings anytime, tofu rolls, and the spiciest pork and noodles in Minnesota. They have several types of congee which is pretty difficult to find in the Twin Cities.
