Pagoda serves all-around good Chinese food with large portions and numerous vegan options. We got the vegetable samosa ($7) just for the curiosity of never having had a samosa made by a Chinese restaurant before. These were good. The steamed vegetable dumplings ($5) are solid and same for the vegetable egg rolls ($4). The pea tips with garlic ($16) was delicious and I'm glad they have this dish as it's true Szechuan. The salt & pepper tofu ($13) doesn't travel well, as it's deep-fried, but it still tasted fine, albeit soggy, by the time I got home. I think they actually gave me the deep fried spicy tofu dish instead, but I'm sure they're both similar. The vegetable lo mein ($11) was fine. I thought the curry mixed vegetables ($13) had a nice, deep umami Japanese-curry flavor, but I wish they'd put tofu in the dish instead of potatoes. I last visited Pagoda several years ago in its Dinkytown location. Food was fine but I'd had better so I didn't go back. However, recently I heard that they were serving dim sum in their Roseville location and thought I'd give them another try. It's hard to find dim sum in the east metro--especially one that serves the treats from carts. In recent months I've gone to Hong Kong Noodle for their dim sum, which is good, but selection is a bit limited and you have to order from a menu, which takes away a bit from the experience. (I love the instant gratification of seeing something on the cart, choosing it, and being able to chow down as soon as the server puts it on the table.) Before I get to the food, I have to say that decor is nice and the service was really friendly, a nice change from brusque service one often gets at Chinese restaurants. Also easy parking, which can be an issue at my other two favorite dim sum spots. The selection at Pagoda was good, but several of our dishes were bland, and three of the four soup dumplings in our order contained no soup. Overall the quality of the food at HK Noodle and Mandarin Kitchen is better. All You Can Eat is $38 per person. My typical cost at Mandarin Kitchen or HK Noodle is around $25-30 per person. Since I don't eat a ton at one time, I preferred to go a la carte instead of AYCE. In the end, while I ate maybe a bit more than I usually do (my dining companion was a heartier eater than me, but not by much) our a la carte bill came to something like $40 apiece. So that, combined with the less-than-stellar taste of the food, gives me pause. read more

Ayce dim sum for $38.99 on the weekends until 3pm. Otherwise, it's a la carte. It's a nice quick fix if you're hungry for dim sum. The steam pork bun is good and not too sweet. The shrimp har gow has a thick wrapper to it but a good amount of shrimp inside. The ladies pushing the carts are really friendly and will come by as soon as your plates are done. Theres a lot of variety, and if theres something that's not on the cart, they can make it fresh for you. Nice and friendly staff. I haven't had dimsum in a minute so when I came to MN to visit my friends, I was excited to hear that there was an AYCE dimsum spot. However I do think that $37.99/person is very overpriced considering the average person spends about $25 each at a non-AYCE dimsum restaurant. They say you judge a dimsum restaurant by how well they make their shumai and hargao but unfortunately they did not live up to my expectations. They were both very dry and bland. I was turned off by the ladies pushing the carts because they were speaking in Cantonese about how my friend was eating so much and laughing at how they called the dish by the wrong name. My friends might not have understood what they were saying but unlucky for them, I am fluent in it. On the other hand, I did like that they were nice enough to make two orders of chicken feet for us after they ran out and seeing the carts being pushed around also made me happy. Pagoda has basically grown to be our own extended kitchen. Back in the day, HK Noodle used to be that, but they have slowly priced themselves out, where a rice plate there can cost as much as $14-15, and a noodle bowl $10-14. That's literally pushing into Ramen territory. I just cannot justify that anymore when extra large Pho that feeds two people are cheaper than that at the authentic Vietnamese places in town. Enter Pagoda, the only other Dinkytown authentic Chinese joint with its own parking lot. This is a big deal. Back when I was a UM student, I would eat anywhere in Dinkytown or Stadium Village because I had a bike or rollerblades on. Well not anymore. I have a car seat now lol. So for people with a CAR and would loathe to pay for $2 parking because you need a noodle bowl for under $10, Pagoda is the only game in this part of town. Hands down. End of story. They serve the typical Cantonese late night munchies: noodle bowls, rice plates in the form of lunch or dinner specials, and congee. They of course have entrees, but we don't come here for that. If we come here for family dinner it's for AYCE Hot Pot for $20/person, which we cannot do at home for that. They also do AYCE Dim Sum for $30/person with bottomless Mimosa. While the food is good, it is not the best in town. I don't think they're trying to be either. But the convenience of a parking spot (most of the time), a varied menu, and best bang for buck makes this our second kitchen. read more

I wanted soup because I've been feeling under the weather and I called in and it was ready in no time. The broth was so delicious and the wontons were huge and full of flavor. Knowing that we are ready to place our order, he runs around filling up half empty glasses of water, runs to the kitchen to grab a small bowl of chili sauce, comes back out, runs around around refilling water on another table. All the while, there is a lady standing behind the counter watching the entire commotion. Very substandard for a Chinese restaurant. I am afraid to imagine what the efficiency is like when it is busy. Menu is very limited for a Chinese restaurant, half of it is American Chinese food by the way. Food was ok. The pan fried dumpling was lousy. Maybe 4 dumplings for $6 We had the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) which were actually decent. Out comes the dish, but all we had were chopsticks in hand. I asked for spoon from another female server, and she looked at me like I'm asking for diamonds. Common, who eats those soup dumplings without spoons? The whole idea is for the spoon to scoop up any spilled soup from the dumpling (which is the best part of all). Irritating to say the least, especially coming from a Chinese restaurant. Orange chicken wasn't that good. The fatty pork belly was good. The vege menu is limited as well, and we ordered the garlic stir fried snow pea tips - which, was rough and old. We arrived around 2pm for ayce dim sum. They sat us, we waited for carts, lady roles in carts and we grabbed a few trays and turns out it was COLD dim sum, I think they were just trying to role the carts around to get rid of the extra "leftovers". Waited and waited some more, kept bringing the same things. Then someone decides to give us a paper menu of the dim sum to order. We thought "why didn't they do this to begin with?". Whatever, we put in our order and at the end we didn't even receive one third of our order. It was 3pm and the kitchen conveniently broke down of their dim sum, and they "stopped" serving dim sum by then. We got robbed of AYCE dim sum. My frustration has to do with the first initial encounter. They knew we were coming in close to their cut off for dim sum but didn't even let us know that they will completely stop our AYCE dim sum service. When we left, I was still FCKING HUNGRY. I've never been to a place that would completely stop serving you because of a cut off time. Usually if you get in within the time then you still get that service. It's funny because as I watched other tables who dined in after us order their meals, I see some of the dim sum being served to them. What a joke. I will say some of the dim sum was good but there's not many options to choose from. Note to self, don't go when their dim sum service is close to ending because they will cut you off. Have been wanting to try this place out and finally had the chance to. We got there around 10:30am on a Saturday. It was clean and not so packed and we decided on AYCE, which was $37.99/person. I cringed a little, but the husband said we'd do it... As soon as we got seated, a parade of ladies came over with carts with the food. It felt pretty overwhelming after the 3rd cart came by and we weren't even sure if we were going to finish the first few plates we picked. It would've been nice to get an idea of what was available beforehand so we knew how to pace ourselves for the plates we actually wanted to try. Customer service was decent and the food was just ok. We had a couple bbq pork buns, a sticky rice with ground pork, stir fried green beans, shrimp dumplings, chicken and shrimp dumpling, chicken feet, beef short ribs, pork ribs, and a couple others that I can't remember. The pork ribs were good, but on the oily side, so I didn't want to eat too much of it. The beef short ribs were ok. I didn't care too much for the dumplings. They were just ok. The chicken and shrimp was a little too hard to my liking. The best dish was the green beans, in my opinion. Gotta love their happy hour specials along with their lunch and dinner deals. They have good prices, a nice large spacious restaurant, clean bathrooms, and relatively good customer service ( I have had my moments where I had to express my dismay with their slow service but I gave them chances to improve) and fun location in Dinkytown. For a lunch or dinner special, one of my favorites include the Beef and Broccoli with a choice of spring roll and soup sweet and sour or hot and spicy. A part from the specials, when I enjoy their cream cheese wontons and then usually enjoy the beef fried rice and General Tao's chicken with steamed broccoli. Finally made it to Pagoda for dim sum. We were greeted warmly and thought the room was very pleasant. It wasn't terribly busy (week day lunch time during the state fair) but we wee happy to see a number of Asian families, usually a good sign in a Chinese restaurant. We ordered off the dim sum menu. Shu mai, shrimp and cilantro dumplings, Chinese broccoli, tofu skin pork and veggie roll, and sesame balls. All of the dishes were delicious! A bit pricey, but reasonable given the quality of the food and service. Will definitely be back! read more

The atmosphere here is amazing, it is loud and crazy, and because you are served as the carts come around, you have time to really enjoy the food in front of you before the other options come around. Plus, it allows you to have conversations with your party in between each food cart. I think if I ate Meat, I would have enjoyed this place a little more, however that was part of the down fall. Another reason I didn't fully enjoy my experience, is that I didn't see prices anywhere, and I budget my finances all the time. The party I was with ended up taking the bill, and I did offer to pay for 1/2, but I ended up just leaving the tip. The parking was minimal for the space itself. There were a few spots in the back I think a total of 6 for their location only, otherwise it is street parking. Make sure you don't park in a Himalayan spot or McDonald's because like their signs dictate throughout the restaurant as you are entering or leaving out the back, "You will get towed". I didn't, but I did ask if where I parked was okay, and they also informed me, to move my car to the street. I'm not terrible at parallel parking, so I didn't mind, I just didn't like that I had to pay for parking. I think I would come here again, but I would have to have a good reason to drive to Minneapolis, and hopefully I would get a spot in the back. Otherwise, I might not. Firstly, my reason for 3 stars is because there was decent food, it wasn't too impressive but it was good, but it was a bit pricy. We ordered 5 plates, with a total of $32 including tip. I personally feel that this a lot seeing I only ate 7ish pieces of food. But if the food was the best thing I had ever ate maybe it would make up for the price.
