This review is long overdue. Keith and the crew and Painter's Grinding have been working on our '78 VW bus for nearly a decade, as well as several buses in our friend family. They are the absolute authority on all things VW and you could not find a more reliable shop to trust with these rare, aging machines. This trip we bought a new (to us) '73 bus that we thought just needed a tune up but ended up having a laundry list of issues. Keith worked on our bus three separate times over the course of four days to make sure we could make the drive back to Oregon, including coming in at 5:30 am on the second visit to squeeze us in on a super busy day. This would be 4.5 stars if allowed. I was referred to Painters from a friend who is a VW enthusiast. My project coordinator was Shawn. The project was a 1971 Bus. It was a multi-system project that literally took months to locate obscure parts.... but that's what we wanted. We wanted them to work on it slowly, so we could spread the expense over time, and we didn't need the bus for transportation. They we're considerate in updating us, and accepting our partial payments as it progressed. After many months, they worked magic! We can now putt-putt around Denver in our bus. I was having a incredibly frustrating time with some electrical issues on my 69 transporter due to purchasing some POS aftermarket parts, I was nervous about bringing it to a specialist, But these guys came highly recommended by a VW friend of mine who is a specialist and who built my 1914 for my bus, Keith is a mechanic with specialty knowledge and I knew right away upon meeting him he was serious about the care for my beloved bus. I called Painter's because my Ghia was running rough and I didn't have time to fix it myself. The guy, very rude and arrogantly, told me it'd be 2 weeks before they could get to it, so I asked if he could recommend any other shops in the area. He laughed. I then told him I'd find one on my on, to which he replied " Bring it back here when they f**k it up," and hung up on me. I'm sure he didn't realize (or probably care) that I've given these guys well over $6,000.00 in business over the last 10 years. Took my 72 beetle for a little help, Ross on Saturday morning helped me to check over the car and get a basic punch list, Keith called me on Tuesday and said the car was running great and to come and get it. I am trying to get this car running as a daily driver for my daughter to get back and forth to school. I have been driving about 200 miles a week and no problems! I used Painters Grinding for my old VW's for over 20 years and began having problems with them a few years ago, but last month was the last time I will ever go there again. I went to Painters last month because the brake pads on my 1984 Westfalia (101K original miles) needed to be replaced. Sean said my rotors were fine and suggested the more expensive German brake pads. I ask him to go ahead and replace the pads. When I came to pick up the vehicle I approached it and noticed the door had been left unlocked and the door was ajar. I looked inside and could see that the vehicle had been broken into and camping equipment was stolen. I asked the guys at Painters about it (starting with Sean and then some of the other guys) and they said I was lucky and if they had locked the doors the break in would have resulted in a broken window. I can't say I was happy with their excuse, but what could I do? When I drove the vehicle off the lot the brakes squeaked like nothing I had ever heard before. It was so loud that people in other cars and on the streets were staring at me. I drove the camper for about 100 miles before I couldn't stand it anymore and took the vehicle back to Painters. They told me that to solve the problem I needed new pads and new rotors. WHAT??!! Note, they told me the rotors were fine when I brought it in the first time. I was not happy that the mechanic who just charged me $200 for new brake pads wanted another $400 for another set of new pads and also rotors. I asked if they could credit me for the first set of pads they installed, but they wouldn't work with me. I decided to go somewhere else to have the vehicle looked at. I had heard of Blazer Automotive for many years, but never took my VW's to them. They are old VW guys who know what they are doing. Larry Blazer looked at the brakes and determined that the rotors were indeed fine, but said that the pads Painters installed were the wrong ones. He replaced the pads with softer ones that didn't squeak at all and charged me $150 total for parts and labor. Now the camper brakes perfectly and doesn't make any noise. I took the pads that Painters put on there back to them and asked them for a refund on the parts and labor since they misdiagnosed the vehichle. They gave me 50% of what I paid for the parts themselves, only $30. If you have an old VW and needs more than just parts, do yourself a favor and never go to Painters Grinding again. Instead, go to Blazer Automotive. They are old timers that have been in the business just as long and are honest and will take good care of you. read more

While I'd like to "like" Painter's, my experiences with them have been mixed -- the positive overwhelmed by the expensive negatives. Actually, I don't know of a good VW shop in the Denver area, although parts places (Painter's and Nu Vintage included) are easy enough to find. My first part from Painter's (replacement fuel pump) left me stranded a couple of months later in the mountains, however. They've missed problems that I drew their attention to (until a subsequent visit). read more
