First foray into Syrian cuisine, and it was similar to other middle eastern cuisines with subtle differences here and there - We got the standard affair of dolma, labneh (spelled labni here), tabouleh, hummus, falafel and baba ghanouj. The hummus was light and flavorful, and the labneh was delightful. Falafel was muffin shaped instead of the standard balls and topped with sesame seeds. The folks behind the counter are sweet and accommodating, and the seating is cozy. Little gripe: I hope they can start serving their spicy and garlic sauces in-house in squeezee bottles instead of little plastic tubs. read more

Delicious Mediterranean food! My husband and I went here for lunch. I got the Kibbi platter and he got the beef Shawarma sandwich - the beef was flavored really nicely and the hummus was generous and creamy. It was my first time here . They had inside Ian's outside sitting area . I ordered the half chicken plate ( which was coming with cucumber salad and hummus and pita bread) . The food was really good . Taste delicious. Good portion and affordable price. For sure I will be back again to try something else . The lady behind the cashier was also nice and friendly. The only thing I can say as an improvement: The size of the plate was very small compared to the amount of food and everything was mixed together. ** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** I took a long walk to Golden Gate Park just to see sculptural artist Charles Gadeken's outdoor art installation, the Entwined Lighted Forest, with all the colorful blinking lights close enough to dusk to enjoy the illumination on Christmas Eve (review: https://bit.ly/3oQZNzf). Of course that meant a wintry walk home that would have seemed longer had I not remembered this place was on the way, and my recollection of their rotisserie chicken was a good one as you can see from my first review. After making my order online, I arrived to find several people waiting for orders since in-house dining was not an option, holiday or otherwise. I think even the staff was surprised how many orders they were making that evening, but I think the demand for comfort food grows exponentially during a socially isolated holiday. I know mine did, and I'm happy to report that their reasonably priced $8.50 Rotisserie Chicken was as succulent as I remembered, even the chicken breast (photo: https://bit.ly/3nYNZKp). The secret must be the brine because the white meat was actually comparable to the dark when it came to savory flavor. 4.5 stars! This is a very unassuming restaurant with good food and homey service. If you only had to order one thing, get their rotisserie chicken. Perfectly crispy on the outside but moist and steamy on the inside. Their mediterranean food is also super tasty. And its so affordable! We left stuffed. Stopped by this place since we were hungry and it was the closest option that looked good. I ordered the lamb shawarma wrap with a side of fries and they were delicious! Portion sizes were just on par with my appetite. Surprisingly the cost came out to be less than I anticipated considering it's San Francisco. Palmyra is a Mediterranean Middle Eastern restaurant..and if you were wondering it's not Turkey or Greece...they will tell you it's from Syria! The menu is engaging and I picked the half chicken, which was filling with two pieces..I had the white sauce and red sauce and wish I had a second serving of the sauces for the chicken. It came with one pita. I also got a baklava for $3.50 and it was good, but like from the manufactured baklava outlets. Have you ever had homemade baklava at a restaurant? Let me know on Yelp. Had dinner with friends here after an afternoon of climbing. We all had wraps: Chicken, Beef, and Lamb Shawarma. The Beef Shawarma was very flavorful and paired with a good sauce that was mildly spicy. My friend said that she liked it because it was mildly spicy, but not sour. We very much enjoyed the meal, so please see the description of the food I got that night. - Lamb Shawarma Platter [GET]: I decided on getting the shawarma platter, because I wanted some hummus. I got lamb, and it was well-marinated and perfectly griddle-cooked lamb. The lamb was super flavorful and savory, just wished it was more tender, because I got tired of chewing at the end of the meal. The hummus with delicious and moist with a creamy texture. The cucumber and tomato salad on the side was refreshing. Pita bread was toasted just right and doughy. I hope they didn't put the lamb on top of the other half of the pita, because it got soggy towards the end. Overall, pretty good and solid meal. - Falafel [GET]: The falafel has a mixture of cooked garbanzo beans and spices fried in vegetable oil. It was pretty solid and well-fried with a crunchy outer layer, but still moist on the inside. Make sure to dip the falafel into the garlic sauce, definitely was the highlight of the dish. It was what made the falafel 10x better, literally the garlic flavor was strong, but in a very good and subtle way. Ambiance: 3.75/5 - The interior is typical hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The noisy level is low, and we came on an evening and it wasn't too pack either. A casual dining spot in the area, so nothing too special about it. Price: 4/5 - I got the lamb shawarma platter for $16 and the falafel was $1 each, so we got five total. My boyfriend and my two friends all ordered "The Palmyra" for $16 as well. The portion was huge and definitely a steal and got a good value. I couldn't finish my shawarma platter and had to take almost half of it back home. Service: 4.5/5 - This place is own by a Syrian family, and they are some of the most hospitable and friendly people I have met. Our server was an old man, and he was so down-to-earth and kind. He started sharing his story, his family, and how he preps for the food, etc. At the end, when I ask for a to-go box, he gave me two extra falafel to bring home too. He kind of reminds me of my dad in a way, very chatty to his customers as well. BLUF: Amazing Syrian food at a good bargain that is quite hard to find in this area. I will hit this spot again when I am craving for Mediterranean food. I recommend their falafel with their homemade garlic sauce, and for entrees, you really can't go wrong with any of them, but give "The Palmyra" a try. I've been eating here since they opened in 2011. The food is consistently amazing. Even though I'm only in San Francisco maybe twice a year, when I eat in or get pickup, the owner remembers me...that kind of service is invaluable. The portions are HUGE!!! Their in house garlic sauce is something I've never seen anywhere else, and their hummus is the silkiest, smoothest, most flavourful I've ever had. A bit disappointing overall. Except for the Kibbi, nothing really wow-ed me. The fact that they didn't include the pita with the mezza plate was really annoying, since how are you supposed to eat all that baba ghanoush and hummus without a pita? I was almost going to give two stars, but the kibbi and baba ghanoush saved the day. Hummus: It was fine for hummus. Better the grocery store stuff, but not as good as the freshly made kind that comes out warm and fluffy (e.g. Oren's). Tabbouleh: Love that fresh parsley zing. A bit overwhelming by itself, but great to clear the palate between bites of other items. Baba Ghanoush: I liked their version. Smoky, but not too smoky. A nice inbetween where it wasn't too smooth and wasn't too chunky. Dolma: A bit too soggy/slimy, tasted like it was made far in advance. Falafel: Shaped like doughnuts. There was absolutely no crispness on the outside. Again, maybe it was made too far in advance? The texture inside was a tad too bready; could have been grainier. Kibbi: I really liked this! The exterior shell was nice and crispy, just like the falafel should have been. The inside was a nice blend of spiced meat and pine nuts. Probably my favorite thing I got. Lamb Shawarma Wrap w/ Feta: False advertising. This is no shawarma. This is chunks of lamb, not thin slices. It was still tasty since the lamb was good quality and cooked nicely, but not what was described. The pita itself was good; large and a lot more supple than the store bought ones. A very generous amount of feta for the add-on. The pickles were a bit too plentiful and a bit too bitter for my liking though. read more
