This family-run cafe has such a rustic atmosphere, super hospitable service, and authentic Middle Eastern cooking. Palmyra is an ancient city in Syria, and the food here is inspired directly from that country's cuisine! To start, we had the fattoush salad, a simple mixture of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, and olives, topped with fried pieces of pita and served with an olive oil dressing on the side. We also had the mezza platter, which came with falafel covered in sesame seeds, dolma (rice wrapped in grape leaves), tabbouleh, baba ghanoush, and hummus. Both the baba ghanoush and hummus here were creamy and smooth, and the most distinctive feature of the hummus was that it had a much stronger flavor of lemon juice than most other hummuses I've had. I also ordered a kibbe, a fritter made of bulgur and stuffed with ground beef, onion, and pine nuts. Next, we tried the half rotisserie chicken meal, which came with juicy chicken, more hummus, cucumber/tomato salad, a tasty hot sauce, and a creamy garlic sauce. Finally, perhaps the most memorable dish was the moudamas, a fava bean stew mixed with refreshing tomatoes and plenty of olive oil--the beans were creamy and tender and went so nicely with the thin pita bread on the side (which unfortunately, was a bit burnt). Moudamas is a dish you don't find in every Mediterranean restaurant and definitely one worth trying out! Overall, I was a fan of the friendly, hospitable service and the great value for the food here! The setting of the cafe could be a little cleaner and better updated, but this is nevertheless a great place for a casual Middle Eastern meal! read more

I pass by this spot all the time but ironically I had never tried it until I was at a friend's place and they suggested we get takeout from here. I got the mezze platter, which had hummus, baba ghanoush, 2 falafels, grape leaves, and tabouli. The hummus is excellent - it's the smooth creamy kind I like - and the baba ganoush was also quite good (it's not the tahini forward kind I love and a bit more acidic, but it's good in its own right). I'm not a big fan of falafels or grape leaves but they did their job. Tabouli was also good but not standout. My friends got wraps which actually looked really good - will definitely have to check them out next time. read more

A sweet mom-and-pop shop feel. Unpretentious, casual ambiance. The food speaks for itself- I got the half chicken which comes with hummus, cucumber salad, and pita. Everything was so clean and fresh. Not to mention the kindness of the workers here. We were given falafel as well as baklavas on the house. -1 for the dry chicken breast (thigh was made perfectly) and the lentil soup I had was not impressive. Overall, support this small business. What a hidden gem!! Palmyra has fantastic Mediterranean food with kind staff, fast service, and amazing food! The portion sizes are perfect, especially the platters. I really enjoyed the "Chicken Shawarma Platter." It came with 2 pieces of pita bread, plenty hummus, grilled chicken, and tomato/cucumber salad. They also give plenty of garlic and hot sauce on the side to give your food more of a kick. I usually call about 10-15 minutes ahead of time and my food is always ready when I come to pick it up. Solid Middle Eastern spot in the Haight. The two times I've been here I've opted for the lamb shawarma, once in platter form and once as a wrap. Both were super tasty! Savory and slightly sour right down my alley. Dripping juice makes it messy. They first wrap with paper and then foil. Be careful of eating paper because i think i did. Hunger means deliciousness. Too hungry so i ate the whole thing! Next time i will try their chicken next time. Half chicken with salad sounds good. Falafels were $1 each. Baklava $3.75. They have interesting rounded booths. I am partial to roasted chicken in general .... and their roasted chicken is WONDERFUL and they somehow BBQ it as well, so you get a mild char on the meat. I mean who doesn't like a little char on their protein? If you like desert, their warm kanafeh is heavenly .... Honey, cheese, phyllo ... I mean how can you go wrong? I had the mujaddara wrap and added fries inside (they're stingy on the amount of fries added for $1.50) and my partner had a beef schwarma wrap and we split A Greek salad -- all were great. However, if you unwrap the wraps to eat they become a huge mess, so either lane it wrapped or eat it with a fork on a plate. My partner picked up 4 different pastries when he went on to pick up our order. These were OUTSTANDING and must be tried. I don't know the names of them but two of them were out of this world. The falafels are fresh and crispy, with the sesame seeds adding an extra crunch. Also Palmyra does sell individual falafels on the side so it's an awesome addition to a casual lunch. -lamb shawarma: overall good flavors, not as flavorful as the falafels but still pretty good, especially with the grilled onions and bell peppers -pita: the platter comes with a slice of pita bread under the lamb, so the pita soaks up the meat juice that makes it a lot more tasty. Pita is also thinner than what you'd usually get which is awesome. -hummus: smooth, fresh and very tasty! I went to Syrian owned restaurants in Washington DC, in Virginia, in New York City, and this one is no different. always generous and delicious! actually this evening I was planning of getting a whole roasted chicken (which is only $13.00). but because on my way there, I stopped by at Safeway nearby and saw the whole fried chicken deal special for $5.00 (Friday Special) I ended up getting a half roasted chicken instead (comes with cucumber and tomatoes side salad, pita bread and hummus). the chicken was really delicious and succulent. the place is laid back, affordable, honest, and a true neighborhood gem. a great find! read more

What was super impressive was they have a family deal, for $50 you can get kebabs that feeds 5 plus hummus and pita. What a steal! There's only about 10 tables, albeit large size so seating can be tight. I heard quite a few people talking to the owner- it was evident this is a family owned restaurant which is lovely.
