Every time we visit from Monterey we have to visit this pizza shop. The entire family loves it

This pizza place was very close to our Airbnb. They have some not so good reviews, but we were starving and hoping to be impressed. Wow , this place is a hidden gem. $8 for a personal pizza. Great deal and it was so tasty. Fresh toppings, crispy crust, nice and fast service. My only complaint is that we don't have a Palo Mesa pizza place in Idaho ! 4 of us had lunch here and were very impressed. They even have fun board games there for a family game night. Once again we got an underdone pizza, even though it was ordered well done. 2 Teenagers running the place laughing and BSing. No manager in sight. The only reason we get pizza here is that it's the only game in this area close. Others don't deliver to the Mesa. Michael, please get it together up here. Service was terrible! Man taking order was very unfriendly. Just said order ready from behind the counter when we were sitting in back. One pizza was ok. One hot hawaiian was undercooked'soggy crust. Try the meat lovers pizza. When I'm down for a good thin crust pizza the Verdura pizza is another favorite.

We live 2 min away and have ordered a pizza and a salad every Thursday by phone for 15 years. Always hot and cooked to perfection. Wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

This rating is solely on customer service phone experience. Parents were in town and the family got together, was looking for something for big crowd( +20 ) to feed and pizza is the go to. I found this place nearby and wanted to give it a try despite the reviews. However, I quickly realized why people left the ratings they have. Upon calling in (march weekend 22nd), a male answers the phone and immediately cuts me off as I was attempting to ask a question. He sounded irritated as if he was rushed, I understand if they were short staffed but just let me know and don't be rude, after a short wait he answers and just was very put off with giving any information. I hung up and went to another pizza place (Beach) further in town with absolutely great customer service. read more

Pizza was great, as usual. The bbq sauce was delicious; just the right amount of "tanginess". The crust was just right - soft and full of flavor. Easy to order and pickup and phone guy was friendly. But I've been away for a while and was really looking forward to reuniting w Palo Mesa and was very disappointed. I don't know if they changed up sauce recipes in the last few years or what, but I ordered 2 pizzas - one med pepperoni and one medium Kens Favorite and both were really really bland. The pepperoni had maybe 2 pieces of pep on each slice and there was no zest at all and the Kens, for all that it has on it, literally had very little flavor to it. Even hamburger meat on it had zero seasoning. The most flavorful item on that pizza were the banana peppers just bc nature. So I was pretty bummed. I ended up deconstructing the Kens and making pasta out of it where I added some salt, pepper, garlic and oregano and that helped quite a bit. So yeah, $60 with tip for half assed food. Dough was pretty good but it could have been cooked longer. I seem to remember having a preference for the one in AG village so I should have just stuck w my old memories of what was good a number of years ago. read more

Literally some of the best pizza I've had in a long time! Stumbled across this place because we were going to check out munchies across the way. But I'm so glad we came here. This pizza is the real deal!! We are in Arroyo Grande for a little R&R and I just happened to stumble on Palo Mesa Pizza by luck. My wife and I have ordered 3 pizzas in the last 10 days. Looking forward to another one tomorrow. The wood fired crust is unbelievable and the toppings are fresh!! A small pizzeria with authentic Neapolitan style pizza. We have been here many times and have never been disappointed. Highly recommended if you like thin crust stone fired style pizza. If you're looking for a thick crust double stuffed American style this won't be for you. read more

Palo Mesa has been a go-to for the 12 years I've been on the Mesa. It had been a few months so I was really craving. Ordered the California Chicken with Alfredo sauce I've had many times. Pizza was ready for pick up in 15 min but what a disappointment. A minimal amount of chicken and just traces of bacon. Crust was great as always. Honestly, I am completely disappointed in this establishment. I have been eating here since they opened and I can not express enough how much they have fallen within the last year or so. The last few times, our pizza has been either under cooked, burnt to an absolute crisp, or lacking toppings for being a 30$+ pizza. Unfortunately, we decided to give it one more shot this evening and it was a let down as well. The pizza came out with 2 pieces of chicken and a very small handful of bacon, not including the additional sausage we requested that was not present. We requested it to be remade, they took the initial pizza back, did not refund us, made us a pizza that was very similar to the original, and still did not have the additional topping we had requested. We made the mistake of going to their small location first. Our friend recommended this pizza place since we were visiting the area. My husband had pizza on the brain. Now he really wanted it. So we drove over to this location. The one our friends told us about in the first place. But we do not know the area and mapped the wrong location first. The menu was a lot easier to read. You can tell they have made changes with hand written additions to the menu board. They lady behind the register was very friendly. She said this location also has the same pizzas as the small location, if you like that type of pizza. The inside isn't that big. They had a nice set up for small groups and larger groups. While we were waiting many people called in orders for take out. Also a few walked in to order to go items. While sitting there I noticed how dirty all of the tables where. The small table we sat at had old and new pizza sauce spots all over it. We also ordered cheese bread. It was good. The pizza crust was very good, I liked the fresh mushrooms on the pizza. The meats on the pizza were to hot and spicy for me to eat. I was very hungry at this point..but I could only eat two pieces of pizza. Good that we also ordered cheese bread. No where on the menu did it say the meats were hot and spicy. Another fail for the day of restaurants. Also employees usually wear gloves for food safety. If you handle any thing else you change out your gloves. I watched how they rang people out at the register, answered the phone. One time scratched her cheek..then went back to the food preparation. I was in town with some friends, and our airbnb host had recommended this place, so we decided to check it out. It was quite close to where we were staying, and prices seemed reasonable too! This place didn't have much seating area, but it seemed to be more of a takeout place than dine-in. After browsing the menu, I decided to order a calzone. They start at $6.90 and +$1.50 per topping. The build-your-own pizzas also follow a similar pattern. There's a base price per size, then an increase of $1.50, $2.25, etc per size up. I ordered a calzone with mushrooms. Service was fairly quick per item, but since we were 9 people in total, it took a while until everyone got their food. The calzone itself was a pretty decently sized portion for the price. Mine came to about $9 total after tax. It was really flavorful, crunchy on the outside, and the crust was seasoned well too! I would recommend not putting too many toppings into the calzone, it makes it soggy inside and it doesn't bake well on the bottom. read more

I've picked up pizza here a bunch of times but today will most likely be the last time. I showed up earlier than my pickup time and observed the staff after paying. I never saw them wash their hands even after handling money from customers. That was pretty crazy to me. The two staff members in the kitchen seemed pretty new and the guy in charge (assuming manager) was in his car when I arrived and when I left. I heard the guy in charge get asked by one of the younger staff members if he should redo my pizza because it didn't have extra sauce (like I ordered). I didn't hear what he said but assume he said it's fine because the pizza was put in the oven. Of course my pizza had barely any sauce on it. Instead of having them redo it, I just asked for extra sauce on the side. The pizza has never been amazing or terrible but they're clearly not concerned with washing their hands and handling food. Hopefully the pizza oven kills all the germs... I guess. read more

I highly recommend this pizza place!! It's a cute little place with a rustic vibe. I've never eaten in but I often get take out here, and it's always fresh and fast. My favorite pizza is the hot Hawaiian, the calzones are delicious and the "magic brownie" is out of this world. 10/10 recommend! read more

Now although I cannot say a thing about their own pizzas, since we didn't buy any, I can comment on their dough! We bought about 2 dozen pizza doughs for a party and wow were they great! If you compare the pic of the Hot Hawaiian I just received from the pic I took in 2013, you can see that quality is slipping. Today I ordered a Hawaiian (not hot) because the last several HHs we've gotten were so loaded w/ bacon that they were grossly greasy. Instead I got a Hot Hawaiian. You can see in the pic that the grease has soaked thru the box. After 2 pieces, we were like, "blech, can't eat anymore!" It also took over an hour to arrive and was soggy. The delivery guy didn't have a pen. Other reviewers complain about young employees not making enough of an effort but I'd say there's a management issue going on...Employee behavior is determined by the manager. Palo Mesa used to be the best pizza on the planet but it seems like they're only hit or miss now. Maybe this happens when the owner isn't around? Sad-face emoji! read more

A coworker and I decided to take advantage of the lunch special I had seen advertised the last time I was here. Two topping personal pizza for $6.00, and the pizza is amazing. When we walked in, there were apparently three people working. One was on the phone at the counter and there were two people that we could see in the kitchen. No one acknowledged us. When the employee finished on the phone he started getting some keep-warm bags ready. Before he could finish, one of the other employees said, "Take care of their order before you go on your f---ing delivery." Surprised, but not worried since it's not like there were any kids, we patiently waited for him to take our order. We both ordered the lunch special, I ordered just a pepperoni and my coworker ordered a pepperoni and Italian sausage. After we paid, we noticed that my coworker was charged an extra $.75 for the Italian Sausage, however, the deal said "2-topping for $6.00," So it was a little confusing but we didn't complain. The ice maker on top of the soda machine was exposed and open which doesn't sound sanitary (but maybe it is?). After we sat down, the guy who took our order was transferring several keep-warm bags to his car. When he came back inside the same employee who shouted at him earlier said, "I show up early and you show up late. You're f---ing fired." Our food took nearly 50 minutes to be served. When my coworkers was brought out, it slipped and was dumped on the table. I've included a picture that I thought to take before cleaning it up myself. He (the shouter) apologized and said he'd fire another one up. Awesome. When that one came out it was just pepperoni with what looked like a spoonful of Italian Sausage dabbed on the crust of one slice. We had already spent more than enough time in the restaurant. We each ate a couple of slices. The pizza was decent but extremely greasy (as far as pizza goes), and honestly the only reason that this wasn't a 1-Star review. For all the hype this place gets, I was extremely disappointed with our experience today. We'll try our luck at the larger location near Walmart maybe in the future. For what it's worth, the guy who took our order wasn't necessarily friendly, but seemed to be the most professional (even more if he removed the beanie). The guy who presumably cooked our food was also the one who was shouting. He sports an unkempt beard and a lazy demeanor, and spent most of his time meandering around the kitchen. I've managed a restaurant, a retail store and a grocery store in the past. Things like customer service, cleanliness and an all around positive experience are important to me because I remember how hard I worked to make sure customers were always taken care of. This place is less than a block from my house. In 3+ years I've lived here, never have I had a courtesy phone taker and they don't care if you like or dislike their product. I asked for thin crust, seriously, just say you don't have it. Don't pretend you do and I asked for items to be excluded and they added it and I asked for extra cheese, ZERO EXTRA CHESSE. It matters which location you go to. This one consistantly undercooks so the center is gooey dough and the crust is edible. What a waste! The other locations are great. I like that they have unusual combinations as most pizza places don't offer any creativity for the blank canvas. read more
