The influx of immigrants from Central America has graced us with El Salvadorian, Honduran and Guatemalan restaurants. This delightful eatery is, obviously, one of the latter. Service is cafeteria style and none of the servers in the line the morning I was there spoke English. That wasn't an issue as I could order pollo en mole y dos tamales in my awful Spanish. The problem when she asked "here or to go". Thankfully a guy in line next to me helped me out. The chicken was tender and mole sweet, spicy and delicious. The black beans were savory and the rice was fluffy. The tamales were a Guatemalan version and they were fantastic. I can't recall the cost of my giant horchata, but it was reasonably priced and paired well with my meal. Seating is spartan, but this not a place you to dine. This is a place you go to eat delicious food at a reasonable price. There is a on the left side as you enter with the bakery and various items like Guatemalan soda and snacks. I think I was the only non-Hispanic in there and that is wrong. More, different people should be enjoying this food. read more

If you plan on visiting this business, save yourself some time and choose another bakery. Not sure why the hours show this place is open until 8:30pm from Monday-Saturday. I stopped by around 7:50pm and to my surprise it was closed. As the other reviews mentioned, this is a Guatamalan Bakery and they serve lunch/ dinner as well. I was here once before, maybe two years ago and ate a meal, but darn if I could remember it. I live in Denton, so unless I have a reason to be in Carrollton (I was visiting my insurance agent a few doors down) there's no reason for me to have a meal here. I went for some pasteries today. They have alot of sweet breads, basically like the Mexican ones you see at the grocery stores, but they also had ones with pineapple, and cheese filled and cookies. I chose a sweet bread, a flat dough pastry with sugar on top and a piece of cheesecake. As the other reviews mentioned, if you don't speak Spanish, you may have some difficulties, but they are friendly and do work with you. I went to this feceshole at the recommendation from my brother. I took my girl with me and to my surprise my brother had just finished his meal and was recommending Tamales and other things. Mind you, we're of Mexican decent and are very fluent in Spanish but my brother is a darker shade than I. I look like an Irishman with red hair and fair skin with freckles. I'm used to being ignored at Latino stores for fear that I may not be able to communicate. I have to announce that I speak Spanish just to get service therefore I don't frequent those laces as it's frustrating. When I made it a point to speak with my brother in Spanish aloud was my way of announcing that I can interact with them but I stood at their counter for over 10 minutes watching these turds ignore and avoid my supplication for service. I wasn't about to make a scene and become a Karen so we left. I'm utterly disappointed. I wanted to spend my money there but for whatever reason either by fear or bigotry this establishment isn't worth anyones business. I come here for several things, in particular the chicharrones. I will drive out of my way for some good chicharrones. They are sold by the pound. I will fight someone if they touch my chicharrones when I get them home. Eat them with their fresh tortillas. Pupusas are super popular here, and unless you want to wait, it's best to order ahead because they are almost always sold out and being made to order for folks dining in. Recommend the chicken tamales. These are the Tamales Rojos wrapped in banana leaves. True Guatemalan tamales. Worth every penny. The panaderia has a large selection, and everything is fresh. The fruit tarts are super tasty. The Orejas are like bigger Palmier cookies. Dine in or take out. Plenty of people choose to dine in. Parking can get tight on busy days. They must sell lots of cakes too, as the phone kept ringing and we saw lots of folks picking up decorated cakes and the like. The personal is slow, yes they do speak English well some of them, they help you but you have to wait a long time for them to finish what they are doing to be able to get to the next costumer. I thought the bread was good, or tasted different from Mexican bread, it taste the same, it is smaller and more extensive. The cake is way better than the regular Mexican cake (tres leches) the frosting is so good, usually they have them in the display for yo to choose from they will take it to the back and add the fruit and color if you need to. But here is the catch: it depends of who is helping you for you to get a lot of fruit on the cake, sometimes they charge you 10 for few pieces of fruit and they will add a lot of it or they will charge you 14 for more fruit and they will only give you some or more depends who is helping you. read more

Pretty solid pork tamale. Don't mistake it for a Mexican tamale because they are different but I knew that ahead of time. They didn't shred the pork...just 2 chunks. The tamale is big but mostly masa. There was a language barier so I thought my second tamale was some else and all it was, was masa. And that masa wasn't as moist as the pork so I just threw it away. Great neighborhood bakery and restaurant. So glad that I noticed it while driving on Beltline road looking for a restaurant that may be open during the power outage and freezing temps. When I arrived the place was busy and there some locals waiting in line. The staff was efficient taking the orders and the line moved quickly. While waiting in line observed multiple trays of freshly baked goods being restocked The staff was friendly and helped this first time customer. Plenty of delicious food items to choose from.
