Spinach Boregs... it was sour!!! Sour spinach?? Where is the dislike button? haha I don't even know if it is intentionally pickled or the pastry has spoiled!!!! Oh my.. how I love Pano's. Can I get a Rachael Ray "YUM-O"?? This place is carb heaven- and the best part is, you would willingly take twice the carbs if it meant you could have all the Pano's homemade flavor in return. MmMm... I would have never ever known about this hidden bakery/grocery mart in Pasadena if not for Mr. H. Mr. H. is a very sweet gentleman in his 70's. He started bringing these to our building around lunchtime (because he knew what a winner Pano's breads were!!) for his nephew who works on the same floor. Of course, being such moochers that we all are, it was not too long after, that the whole building was buzzing about it and taking orders from him. Mr. H. is here nearly every other day now dropping off Pano's breads. "Two mozzarellas plain, three spinach boregs!!" That's my usual order :o) Pretty awesome right?? Mr. H. is making friends left and right. That's what good food does to people. It's just fantastic. So.. more about my order and other yummies: I adore the mozerella (chili or original) dinner breads, their spinach boreg (mini pies), and olive dinner rolls. I have never been there, but I'm vowing to go soon. Someone at my work who is obviously a proven clinical anorexic must have deposited a little package of Spinach Boregs (little spinach tartlet /kolochky kind of things) in our office kitchen as "up for grabs." I ate one and swooned with lemony cheesey spinach goodness. Then I ate another one out of sheer WOW gotta have another of those. Cheese boreg, spinach boreg, & manaesh. Every time. I really love the cheese they use: slightly chewy and great tasting. Cheese boregs/flatbreads are one of my all-time favorites. They taste good, but better when heated. My brother really likes the manaesh, which is a flatbread topped with tomatoes, ground beef, etc and a subtle sour taste (maybe lime?) that adds a hint of flavor. The spinach boreg is pretty sour, but I love it that way. Customer service is great and welcoming. If you like learning about other cultures, just ask them! They could tell you about the Armenian culture or Lebanon. Great conversations. There's a guy named Garo who is very open and affable. He also speaks Arabic, which I find exciting XD. I was like, ! & he responded, . It makes me feel nostalgic, as if I were back in my hometown. You should definitely stop by! And at least get a cheese boreg. I was surprised by the great prices they have. Most of the breads cost no more than a dollar. I don't remember the exact prices as of today, except that 6 manaesh cost $6 (1 costs $1.50)... Panos Bakery is currently being remodeled (but still open). Part of the walls have been painted a pleasant, light green; I feel so relaxed when I'm in there. read more

"Take a step into another country" Some Armenian friends had mentioned about a great little place to get fresh cheese borek in Pasadena's Little Armenia. East Washington Blvd., that is. What is cheese borek? Well, besides edible nibs of heaven, they are fillo pastry stuffed with feta and mozzarella and baked to goodness. Frankly, my Samoan blood must have some Armenian in it because these things are like crack. So, I hopped in my car one day on a quest to find this little bakery. After two missed passes, I notice this tiny shop on the corner in a section of the city where time stood still in the 50's. The architecture only adds to the flavor of the shop, and when you walk in, your senses will trigger immediate salivation. On this day, there wasn't anyone at the front counter as I stared at the rows of fresh baked breads and goodies. Then, in an open doorway to the back, I could see a silhouette of a very old woman, dressed with a scarf, and looking like a travel poster for Armenia. She was smacking her hands with dough as she stuffed delicate rolls of dough. That was all I needed to see. She could have been stuffing potting soil into socks and I would have eaten them. Then, her son or grandson popped out into the light and asked if he could help me. Minutes later I was walking out with about $20 of carbs. And $20 at Panos gets you enough carbs to fuel the Space Shuttle on a round trip. Needless to say, I have to work on my self control, but I'd like to see if you can resist any better than I did. I have been coming to Panos for nearly 10+ years. By far my favorite Armenian bakery for Lahmajune (good quality meat, perfect ratio of meat to bread, everything is chopped uniformly, crispy on the edges yet still tender and firm in the center). Their Manaheesh is also the best in town if you like a thinner dough like I do....it's best when you heat it a pan and crisp it up...heavenly. The Spinach Boureg is the BOMB...for those yelpers who gave one star because the Spinach Boureg was sour.....you guys are idiots...it's supposed to be sour. Traditionally it's seasoned with lemon, sumac and citric acid (I don't think they use Sumac in thier recipe but my point is traditionally these are ingredients that all give the sour flavor). I'm not a huge fan of the Cheese Boureg myself but my family loves it and will eat a dozen in one sitting. I have also tried thier Tahin Bread and Date Cookies so aromatic and delicious! Bottomline out of all the Armenian bakeries in Pasadena.....hands down this is best quality product! Con- because they supply allot of the local markets in the area with thier goods....they tend to run out of Manahesh and Bouregs pretty early in the day. Pro- if you know ahead of time that you'll need some stuff they will graciously put items aside for you if you call in advance. read more

Every week, my two year old daughter and I make our Saturday pilgrimage to Panos Bakery for spinach and cheese boreg (savory pies). We're always greeted with the wonderful smell of pastries baking and the wonderful hospitality of Garo and Sonia, two of the expert bakers. That said, all the friendliness and low prices in the world wouldn't keep us coming back if the boreg weren't delicious. But they are, especially the spinach pies, with tangy tender spinach wrapped inside an almost-sweet, perfectly baked shell. (If you haven't had one before, the best I can do is describe it as something like a spanakopita wrapped in a slightly crispy pita, but that is a highly imperfect analogy.) I mean, it should say something when a two year old is begging for spinach, right? (I'll add that Panos also has some other items, like grape leaves, lamajeune, semi-sweet choregs, etc., all of which are quite tasty, but the boregs are the family favorite.) In any case, I recommend this place highly enough -- what more could you want than a friendly neighborhood bakery with delicious Armenian spinach pies? Well, the answer is this: next door to Panos is a fantastic nut store (Aladdin's Nuts) with the best Jordan almonds I've ever had, and just down the street are two great Armenian grocery stores with muhamara that's out of this world. Work in a trip to the Pasadena Farmer's Market, and you have the perfect grocery outing. tl;dr summary: Two year old says: "Spinach pies so so delicious." read more

Anytime my dad goes to Pasadena he brings us the cheese and spinach pies. They are amazing! I've tried spinach pies at different middle eastern places and none of those places can compare to how this place taste. If you are in Pasadena area or even if you are not :) u must make the drive and come try this place out. You will be hooked. read more

I was starving and thinking, "I'd like a little something to hold me over 'til lunch," as I drove down the road. I do not know what compelled me to pull over when I saw this corner bakery, but probably the big blue and white sign. It's one of many bakeries along this stretch of "Bakery Row" on Washington. Once I parked, I had second thoughts because this looked like a total dump, with dingy dark windows and I wasn't even sure if it was open until I saw something move behind the glass. I walked with a little trepidation into this dumpy little place and had third thoughts when I didn't see much out in terms of display and thought that this had to be the single ugliest bakery I'd ever seen in my life. However, I told the guy behind the counter I wanted something with lots of FLAVOR and he sold me a Spinach Boreg and a thing --- forget the name --- which was super-thin flat-bread covered in a beautifully seasoned meat mixture. I liked the boreg, but the other meat thing was fantastic. Yesterday I stopped by at 5:15 p.m. to pick up one of those meat things and was devastated to find them closed, forgetting that bakeries have super early hours. This place has the best lahmajun period! Plenty of meat ,nice crunch to the sweet onion, sour taste from the pomegranate concentrate , great flavor and amazing texture ... The best ! Anything less than 5 stars is a crime! These are the most authentic and caring people you will find. They make everything with the best ingredients and a big dollup of love. The Kibbie better than my mother used to make and the Lehmajun is like heaven sprinkled with awesome sauce! You simply can't find better tasting food with this level of quality at these prices. Been living in Pasadena for over 14 years never stopped by Panos Bakery thanks to Armen Market for selling Manaish at the store, had the privilege to try it myself, WOW AMAZING taste and the dough is so thin you won't feel guilty eating a bread, I usually get heart burn after eating Manaish, but no more, most manaish end of the day you have to toss it in garbage cause its like donuts if you don't eat it right away trow it away, O no not this ones, its as good the time you buy it, usually leave it in refrigerator, stays as GOOD as time bought from the store, my husband and granddaughter love it so much they ask for it all the time, my husband had them at diffreant bakeries before, but says never had it as good, I usually buy 2 bags of 6 each time, I have tried spinach too wow loaded with spinach inside thin layer of dough, can't wait to go in and try Tahin bread, SUPER PLEASED read more

Panos Bakery is a traditional Armenian bakery, in which the family business has passed on the trade secrets of the fantastic bakery goods to the generations ahead. No written recipe, just experience. I agree with the previous reviewer about the Delicious spinach boreg, but you should try the "Tahini Bread" with sesame seeds which is not only very healthy, but the taste and the texture of the bread is out of this world. Every time I pass by Panos bakery, I would greatly regret if I don't buy less that 12 pieces of Tahini bread. You must try it to see what am I talking about. read more

The Best Manaishe in Pasadena! add some tomatoes, mint, feta cheese & olives and you have a sandwich from heaven. I wasn't to excited about the lahmajune (Armenian Pizza) felt like you were biting into a sandwich that soley consisted of grilled chopped onions. read more
