Good food, good people, good background music, and a good space. I often choose this place because it's a good place to bring my kid and when I have company, it's a good meeting spot. The music in the background is often reggae or a mellow Spanish rock (rock en espanol, i.e. Mana). This was my first visit where I was able to enjoy the outside space. It is beautiful - art, a garden full of vegetables, a grill, a fountain, shaded picnic tables, unique sitting benches (love the surfboard). I may utilize this as an event space one day. My favorite dish is the quesadilla with chicken. If you have a smaller appetite, it's enough for two meals, or to share. read more

I think my idea of what Papas and Pollo would be was way off. I should have known that Seb-Mex meant it wasn't traditional, but somehow, I was still not expecting the super Surf Shack - Good Vibes Only atmosphere that greeted me upon arrival. As we sat in the bar/tv area watching the Warriors get defeated (narrowly), listening to Hawaiian bands croon through the speakers, eating our dinner, I was still scratching my head. The kitchen was full of, what I'm going to call "surfer dudes" (and it's a tiny kitchen - it must be a well orchestrated session back there), while attractive young women took orders and ran food. If only it were warmer and the floor was sand and everyone were barefoot - it would feel like an expat hangout on the beach in Mexico. I'd say the food is only Mexican in that the dishes are named things like "taco" and "burrito" - the flavors were pure California (or Seb if you will). I think this place is probably a hit with vegetarians - there were so many yummy sounding veg options. Sadly, I struggled to love my food. Even after salting it, salsa-ing it, and lime-ing it, I was still not finding the sort of rich flavor I associate with Mexican food. I think if I had more "the surfers you used to hang out with in college made dinner, and it's actually pretty darn good" in mind vs Mexican food I would have been more prepared. The tacos were just huge piles of meat on single tortillas (the chicken had a nice grilled flavor, and the pork was moist, but the steak was super bland - I think it steamed rather than seared - and everything needed seasoning). A bit of dressing on the greens wouldn't have gone amiss. The pork stuffed potato was definitely better and the thing we ate the most of. The chips and guac were solid. Service was friendly, and vibes were indeed good. The outdoor patio looks like a great place to hang out on a summer evening. Now I know that it's not a place that is going to scratch my taqueria itch. My advice - come chill, and get a something stuffed spud of some variety, and let the good vibes roll. read more

Papas and Pollo just reopened with new owners. They have local organic seasonal specials. I've already been twice and taken friends who loved the food as much as we did. Their stuffed potatoes or yams are delicious, mounded with black beans, cheese, veggies and your choice of smoked chicken, carne asada, or tofu. The snapper tacos are superb. Having recently moved to Sebastopol from Southern California my husband and I have been on the quest for delicious burritos, as scrumptious as we had become used to in San Diego. Unfortunately, we have not been successful here in Sonoma County. First, we tried a place just down the street from Papas & Pollo and were seriously dissatisfied at the "outcome" after leaving the restaurant. This establishment will not be named out of respect of those with stronger digestive tracts. Today, we ordered the fish taco plate and a vegan burrito from Papas & Pollo. It looked delicious and I was excited to eat it, but after biting in I found there wasn't much flavor. The sauces (2) that are available appear to have water added and are severely lacking. My husband did not finish his food and neither did I. I am happy to see that they use organic ingredients and have local beers on tap too! For now, we will continue our search for burritos! read more

This place has some really good, albeit pricy taqueria food. Last burrito I had included lagunitas beer-marinated pork. Quite delicious but over $11 just for the burrito is getting closer to sit-down restaurant status. Maybe I just need to be less poor. read more

I've been eating at this restaurant since I was a kid. I know they've changed hands at least once. The old Papas and Pollos was much better, sadly. I ordered a tofu burrito and picked out almost all of the tofu. It was far too salty and the flavor wasn't very good. My brother got the braised pork burrito and he said it was very stringy and too chewy. I will say the tortilla was grilled which was very tasty. Also their tortilla chips are very thick and I liked that unique taste. But in the end there are a lot of other good Mexican places in Sebastopol, skip this one. read more

As frequent customers we have NEVER been disappointed in their food and service! For the first time we had Papas and Pollo cater our sons graduation party and once again they were AMAZING! Chips and sandwich bread were moldy. We ate at the place, forced to give a tip (the machine or sever didn't provide the option not to) and we had to pick up our own food. Breakfast sausage is chicken and a tiny patty. Parking is limited. Be safe. Avoid this place or just buy a bottled beer. read more

I'm going to second Margie N's review-- there is no menu posted so there is no way to think about what to order ahead of time. It can get frustrating when every group ahead of you consists of swaying jacksons. PLEASE POST A MENU. It took forever to get the food too. I'm going to avoid this place during rushes at all costs. It took nearly 45 minutes to get our food (to-go order). Are you kidding me? When I glanced over to the kitchen, it looked like they had a 2+1 staffing for the kitchen, which is fine, but with only 1 oven to work with and a small grill. The orders keep piling up. I don't know what they can do to renovate that kitchen situation (and I'm afraid renovating would compromise a lot of quality, as they just don't have any more room along that narrow kitchen corridor). I was SOOOOOO excited when I saw a few weeks ago that Papas now delivers and was SO disappointed just a few minutes ago to learn that they don't *actually* deliver. Well, wait, maybe they do. They don't deliver on Saturday nights for sure (I guess) and the guy on the phone didn't give me any kind of indication of when they actually DO deliver. It's too bad, too. The burritos are awesome and the ambiance... well, at what other Mexican restaurant can you ogle surfboards while grooving to Bob Marley? On the flip side: there is often zero parking, and having a burrito made up takes a minimum half an hour. Are they busy? Always. That's why the delivery would be such a great idea. Wish they'd reconsider. I ended up heating some Trader Joe's frozen taquitos tonight instead. read more

Totally awesome! Had one carne Asada taco and one shrimp taco, as a plate, with black beans, Spanish rice and organic greens! It was amazing! Pacifica on tap, grilled peppers and ask for the habanero sauce ( hot hot hot) Woo I really appreciate what they are doing, they compost kitchen scraps, use organic whenever possible and have an allover great product. They're back baby! I went to P&P a few times over the past few years and was dismal- Slow service, bland, cold and overpriced food. Very sad shell of what it was in the 90's. I saw the signs that they were under new ownership. I was hesitant, but I really want to support my local community. What a difference! Brighter and warmer ambiance, table service and real plates! The menu is updated and simplified- but still has lots of veggie goodness. I had the tofu verde potato- fantastic, even if you're not a vegetarian. Good beer selection on tap and fresh salsas and aguas frescas. The staff was very friendly, but as they got busier, the service got a little slow (luckily I had gotten my food already.) Great customer service I can say the two women checking on the customers and the dining area were really attentive. The decor isn't quite Mexican, i would describe it as eccentric. The food didn't quite give me an authentic Mexican feel but it's still pretty good. I liked the green salsa more so than the red one. I feel like it could have used a little more citrus and salt but that habanero! That was the ONE! It wasn't at the salsa bar because it costs an additional 50 cents and we had to ask for it but I think it was well worth it. We were given a two ounce cup and it was about one ounce of salsa in it. I think they should suggest it when purchasing food or brining the food to the table, a little up sale never hurt anyone. I didn't want to buy another cup so I just grabbed one of the freshly grilled jalapeños to give my dish some spice. We got a salad that came with balsamic dressing and a shrimp burrito. The burritos come cut in half so we didn't need to ask which I thought was visually more appealing than leaving it whole. A friend of mine told me the chips used to be free but they aren't anymore. $1.50 for a small and $3.00 for the regular sized basket. We got a full basket and some guacamole which I feel like could have benefited from some more lime juice. Luckily they have a container full of limes at the salsa bar so we just added it ourselves. No biggie, and I can say I'm thankful that it was really guac because sometimes I go places and they add sour cream, tomatoes, and whatever else to bulk it up and make it stretch. This wasn't the case here, it wasn't watery, it was solid and was fresh. The shrimp burrito wasn't anything special however they did use bigger tiger shrimp if I'm not mistaken so the quality of the food is why I gave 4 and not 3 stars. They also grilled the burrito on both sides well toasted not grilled but that's my favorite part. I love the toasted texture when biting into it. I enjoyed my experience but I would probably still go to the Mexican spot in the plaza about 80 feet away just to try something else. I would recommend this place if you haven't been. The addition of habanero salsa paired well with the flavors of our food there was some sweetness to the heat that made it really shine. The bathroom was clean, the restaurant was clean, none of the employees were slacking off. I really don't like seeing workers just standing around and not working. Love that there are mixed greens in most burritos, which along with the black beans and perfectly cooked meat, make for a mean meal. Real good spot. Had the smoked pork quesadilla -- delicious. Got a real spicy spot in there toward the end, which really almost burned me out, but I'm a bit of a lightweight in that way, you might say. Local organic stuff. I don't really care too much about that per se, but it is a good indicator for a restaurant that takes its food seriously. This place definitely does. I do like my tortilla chips in thinner form though -- the thicker greasy (homemade) ones at this place aren't really my style. That's all I had an issue with though. The pork is always overly cooked, crispy, dark brown, barely identifiable. And every time the cute waitress/order taker does nothing to remedy. This flakey dive used to be a great place many years ago. They had a big salsa bar, full of pickled vegetals, hot peppers, & salsa. Then it was removed & moved up front with just a few items. The food was fair, that's it. They also used to have a great happy hour, 2-4, Mon thru Fri, on beer & wine. They had several Lagunitas ales on tap, including some strong ones, which I liked the best. The wine was just so-so, but my wife isn't as picky as I am, & the prices were cheap. Then it continued to change for the worst. Once they had no wine at all. Then they doubled the price for half the amount, & said no more happy hour. Since when? We went back again & asked if they still had a happy hour [on ale], & the dopey girl behind the counter that had waited on us so many times before lied & denied that they ever had a happy hour! Great west county version of Mexican food. We both had the namesake Papas and Pollo burrito to go and really liked the mesquite smoked chicken. Yummy flavor! The papas/baked and fried spuds added a nice crunch and flavor contrast. Black beans also nice touch. Highly recommended! read more

My spouse and I recently moved from Sebastopol to Rohnert Park and we miss Papas! It was our go to for a quick, yummy meal. The food was always tasty and fresh, the wait was a bit long at times - but always worth it. The staff are very friendly. We typically get the nachos, but I've tried basically everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. One thing to note - a friend who is vegan did not have the best experience, as she found a piece of chicken in her meal. But I've never found anything unexpected in our meals, so I'm thinking this was a fluke. Just something to be mindful of. I hope they're doing okay during Covid! read more
