Did you change chefs? My wife and I have always ordered the tofu temptation burrito. Recently the tofu is more soggy and less flavorful.

Happy to discover this place! Had a Mexican food craving and they were open and I made another visit same week. Cute little place, small private parking lot. It's an order at window, seat yourself and get your food when they call you kinda place. Plenty of seating inside, table and bench seating, with some fun character, beach hut feels. And plenty of seating - I couldn't count how many picnic tables, outside is set up for private events, too. And dog friendly! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and vegan options. This place is very vegetarian / vegan friendly! No animal by products are used cooking beans / rice! And they seem to use organic ingredients when they can! The food...the stuffed potato / yam is a good dish, I prefer it without the tofu but either way, it was delicious and filling! The veggie tacos on the other hand weren't anything mind blowing, not bad just not good, I probably wouldn't order them again. And last but not least I've tried their vegan burrito, which was definitely satisfying! I recommend this place and will be back! read more

If this place was a bumper sticker, it's be that "Visualize whirled peas" one. It's not an awful joke, it's just kind of corny and safe and predictable. And then after you see it few times, it's no longer funny. That's what the food is like here. It's not awful, it's just a corny, safe interpretation of Mexican food. (That does have a following). But after a couple bites, it's not funny anymore. Lots of folks are fond of that bumper sticker and lots of folks are fond of Papas and Pollos and they are both very valid points of view. They're just not ones that I share. I had the Huachinango (fish) burrito, wifey poo had the Tofu Temptation. The food was just bland and overpriced. I've probably been spoiled on really great Mexican food from taquerias and food trucks. This was not like those places. In a pinch, if I was really hungry and they were open and I happened to be in their parking lot, I'd probably order a bean and cheese burrito off the kids menu. It's a neat place inside. Makes you feel like you're out on the coast at a groovy, taco stand. Nice enclosed patio out front, good for kids. Three stars because two stars feels too mean. read more

The food here is not amazing. The only reason we've dined here over the years is for the patio vibe. We came out to enjoy a summer evening in the outside area- a place that used to be kid friendly, offering chalk and such (that's all gone now). My son and his friend asked if they could go in and fill up their water; I said sure, unaware that this small act would somehow spawn panic and threatening behavior from the employee at the register. While I understand that the pandemic brought on some added concerns, there is NO excuse for verbally attacking me, for publicly belittling me and wrongly judging my parenting, shouting at me that it's my responsibility to "watch my kids at all times...", threatening to call the cops if we don't leave....?!?! I mean WOW- as if we were some thugs partying and wrecking the place! I was being cordial, simply trying to understand why my kids were being yelled at when she launched all of this "right to refuse service to anyone" nonsense. Unbelievable. I served at & managed fine dining restaurants around SF for the better part of 15 years before getting my masters and moving into the nonprofit business sector in West County; I know a little something about business & THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED. Furthermore, I have been coming here for YEARS and this same girl has always had an unhappy disposition that borders on rude; I've often wondered why she deserves to be the front face with such negative energy, but this time she crossed the line. Even if you're not working your dream job, there is a way to behave when you are representing a business. Clearly she knows very little about customer service & even less about ethics & Human Resources. She not only publicly scolded my kids before connecting with me to take measures which is damned inappropriate!, ($100 says she's NOT a mother or she would know better!), but she incorporated another client, urging her to explain her side of "what happened", basically ganging up on me with a member of the community- absurdly unprofessional! There are no words. "Call the cops on us?!" Really?!?! Because you didn't like the way my kids were getting their water?! Then when I looked down at my phone to see my husband was texting, wanting to come meet us for dinner, she shouted something like, "oh what now you're gonna take a picture of me?!" What the actual insanity is going on with this girl?!?! Give her a vacation- a permanent one. One of the worst facets of this is that I brought a new SEB resident here to "show the patio off" & she witnessed all of the disrespect and threatening behavior instead. It's safe to say her family won't be back. The pandemic has offered many lessons to us, one of those being a lesson in self-reliance, underscoring the fact that certain novelties are NOT necessities- including restaurants and dining out. I won't waste my money here again or expose myself, friends & family to such negative energy. There are so many awesome people serving our community, people who deserve and need our business. In addition to publicly insulting and threatening me, we got kicked out leaving near full meals behind that I paid for AND regretfully tipped on. Our kids went home upset & hungry. Papas can keep their dry, microwaved beans & bland food. Nothing about this place is "family friendly" as the website claims & the "service" is subpar even for a taco joint. They charge for chips, they actually ASK for tips, & then you're meant to bus your own plates. Such a shame. read more

Went with my co-workers for lunch. Because we had a large group I phoned ahead to be sure they could take us at lunch time. When I arrived, they had tables reserved with chips, salsa and pitchers of water so we could all sit together. Wonderful! Ordered at the counter, and didn't have to wait long for our food. I tried the stuffed yam with carne asada, beans,and other yummy goodies on top. There was a little green salad on the side which I ate with some yummy balsamic dressing. The yam was cooked perfectly as was the meat and beans on top. It was really enough for 2 meals. read more

I love this place! Laid back, friendly atmosphere. Great fish tacos and I love the Stuffed Yam or Potato. I really like their Carne Asada too. I can't eat their Carnitas or their Chicken because they are not Gluten Free, but I've heard good things. I enjoy sitting on the back patio on a sunny day with a glass of wine. Their pork yam has a lot more on it than just that, and I love it. They make the effort to crisp up the carnitas before adding a generous helping on the top of your baked yam or baked potato--your choice. You'll usually find cheese, sour cream, black beans and spring mix salad, as you dig in. People enjoy the fun and casual indoor and patio atmosphere. A lot of well-organized takeout too. That's awfully presumptuous and an insult to actual waiters and a dining experience, which this is not. This was a perfect spot for lunch on a drive to the river. The quality and taste matched the great places we're used to in Oakland and San Francisco, and at a much lower price. Sitting outside, under the welcoming shade of the trees, we felt a bit transported to Baja. We'll definitely return, and make this a regular stop on rides in the North Bay. read more

Papas does a modern twist on Mexican cuisine. My wife loves their chicken stuffed yams. Their burritos seem a slight bit on the dry side. Quesadillas are large and tasty. You may want to allow a few more minutes for phone orders than what they quote you. read more

Bland. Unfortunately there was no flavor at all. The Spanish rice was not Spanish rice. The beans had little to no salt. The greens at the most flavor out of everything in the burrito. To top it off there was only three prawns in a 12 dollar burrito which did not include chips ($3 more for chips) I wanted to like this place so bad. All they needed to do was add some spices (pepper, salt, paprika, anything!). I know they have a lot of support from the community but I won't be coming back. read more

A cool, divey Mexican spot with great food, chill/dim atmosphere, a walk-up ordering counter, and yummy Kombucha. Should you try it? Yes Favorite thing about this place: I loved the tacos that I ordered. Very well put together, a nice texture and consistency. I'd love it more if: The tortillas could be better. They got soggy and fell apart so I ended up eating most of my tacos with a fork (no problem, they were still yummy). Ambience/Location: Dark ambience and kind of divey. Seems like the entire place is actually just an outdoors with a roof over it (the furniture is like porch furniture). But it's fun and comfortable. They also have an actual outdoor seating area that I found out about when I went to the restroom, which you have to walk outside to get to. Service: The woman who took my order was nice, but it wasn't clear that smoothies were only a morning thing. I wish she would have recommended something different to drink or maybe some more/other add-on items. I wasn't super full after eating here. But could have ordered more food if there line weren't always so long. Tips: 1) This is an order at the counter type of place. Be ready to order everything you want up front, as the line gets a little intense. 2) No smoothies at dinnertime. 3) Kombucha here is awesome! Recommended Dish: I really enjoyed their fish tacos! I used to love it here but I had to post a review to say how disappointed I am they started to charge three bucks for tortilla chips. Who does that? Yeah, they're organic, great, but it feels like a whopping insult to pay $10 for a burrito and then get charged for chips. I can understand that it would be annoying for somebody to come in and order one taco and then take advantage of bowl after bowl of chips. That's why many taquerias will make you order at least two tacos to get the extras. Though I like the food ok and could afford the chips if I desperately wanted them, it's the principle that bothers me. So I'm looking for another taqueria... I love the Seb-Mex salad, fish tacos and the house tofu tacos are amazing too. Vegetarians, check out the house tofu tacos. The patio is a great place to hang and the kids can run around. My problem with this place is that they sometimes take a really long time to prepare your food. Make sure if you go here, you have time to sit there and wait. This place is bright and flavorful. Good service great food. Very satisfied. I like that is a ton of Windows and you can look out on the streets. And it's in a great part of town but it's just far enough away from the Taurus that it's not hard to park and it's not too crowded. Terrible place to eat, blan flavorless food that uses lots of subpar rice to fill their dishes. I have been sucked into eating here many times over the years and have finally had it with this place. My fault for thinking it would somehow get better. If you want great Mexican food go literally 30 seconds down the road in either direction and eat at either Viva Mexicana or El Cornell mexican restaurant. Viva Mexicana has quality flavorful food for all dietary preference. If your not into vegan or vegetarian options don't be turned off by Vivas abundance veggi dishes, their meat friendly food is top notch. Maybe I just had a bad experience but the vibes I got from the employees was terrible and they were extremely dry and rude. I ordered our food to go, came to 36$ for a small burrito, and a taco combo and two other tacos. The tacos were tiny street tacos for 4$ each....I asked for some chips they said that they are 3.50 a bag...I have NEVER been to a Mexican restaurant that charges for chips...the food was Eh. At Papas & Pollo, you don't need to worry about running into your boss like you would at Chipotle (cause he eats there too) and now your screwed cus you called in sick and should be at work... At Papas & Pollo, you don't need to wear your earbuds while you eat cause every other place is blasting Katy Perry or Adele... And at Papas and Pollo--you don't have to worry about switching outta your shimano SPD cleats after a ride, or that you're not wearing a clean shirt, or need to make sure the crack in your window is just right for your dog while he waits in the car--at Papas--you just bring em' in... If you remember places in the 90s where you could sit where you wanted without having to ask, or be able to get your own salsa/as much as you want, or to take your time without someone constantly pestering you with "how's the food?" like at El Torito--well, it's still a reality...At Papas & Pollo. We waited in line for 15 minutes before we could get to the front to see the paper tri-fold menu to order... (post menus, please). It was similar to the old menu, hard to read and figure out what to order. The only saving grace was Lagunitas on tap... We both ordered different chicken burritos with the addition of avocado... $1.00 extra... $9.50 for a burrito... You would think the best/largest burrito ever was coming... We got salad wraps... Not so much... They boast their organic greens and local food... Well I bet... They could save $$$ on their greens by filling those burritos with rice and beens (cheap)... There was 1/2 inch of rice, beens, chicken on the outside edge and a good 2" of greens in the middle. I love my salads and vegetables... Just not in my burrito... It bummed me out... There are 6 Mexican restaurants in a town of 8000 people... I wish them the best... No plans for going back. I hope they visit some of the other successful Mexican restaurants in the area and make a new menu, ditch the greens, and figure out their interior identity crisis... Reggae, beach, sports fan, Ikea decor, Mexican... With their prices, a ceramic plate, a glass, and metal silverware would be in line for what they are asking from customers monetarily... The food is good!! On the milder side, "gringo-style" mexican food. ...the service is not so good.... Slow, slow, slow; easily overwhelmed staff. After waiting 45 minutes for food with my 3 kids in tow, they had forgotten my daughter's burrito. Then I had to wait, wait to get their attention, and wait, wait for the burrito, and then wait, wait to tell them "just refund me please". Wonderful little Mexican Restaurant. The food is served fresh and reasonably priced. A huge bonus, like most places in Sebastopol now, is that they serve Kombucha on tap, very tangy and refreshing. We had pork pupusas and fish tacos and both were excellent, served with a side of greens and coleslaw. We did have one complaint though. The restaurant is similar to a greenhouse. Very pretty from the outside but once you step in it's warm and humid. We had to eat out on the patio, which was very nice, but inside the restaurant was quite unbearable. They only had one small fan, which didn't work. Other than that though, I would recommend this place because of the organic local food and good service, albeit a bit on the slower side but that's to be expected when everything is made fresh! read more

Its back! Its back! New owner (a local), new chef, an updated, polished look, some of the same menu. They kept the tofu temptation and it is still delicious! Lagunitas beer on tap. Do not go if you are super super hungry because it's made fresh and it takes awhile to get your food. (calling ahead works) No salsa bar, but already packaged cups of red and green salsa (pico de gallo by request) free wifi. Breakfast menu. No compost containers but uses almost all compostable material (plates, forks, knives, napkins) I'd like to see that change. Welcome back! read more

The ownership has changed but I just haven't been able to give this restaurant another try. We encountered a giant dead black fly in the black beans. If you see flys leave don't chance it. Everything is good here! Unique Salads, burritos, and my personal fave: the Pork stuffed yam. The chips are super crisp and both salsas are so good. The casual vibe is perfectly matched to the food. First off I would like to say that the stuffed yam is actually a sweet potato (bright orange flesh equals sweet potato and more nutritious than yams which have light/white colored flesh). It was pretty good. The seb mex salad with chicken was also pretty good, but there was an unappetizing puddle of water at the bottom of the dish, perhaps from the sautéed veggies. Plus, who puts marinated artichoke hearts on a Mexican-style salad? Jicama would have been perfect. I ordered a taco which was dry and I would have slathered it in salsa except their salsa is an insult to salsa, but since there are only two kinds, choose the green. I think my idea of what Papas and Pollo would be was way off. I should have known that Seb-Mex meant it wasn't traditional, but somehow, I was still not expecting the super Surf Shack - Good Vibes Only atmosphere that greeted me upon arrival. As we sat in the bar/tv area watching the Warriors get defeated (narrowly), listening to Hawaiian bands croon through the speakers, eating our dinner, I was still scratching my head. The kitchen was full of, what I'm going to call "surfer dudes" (and it's a tiny kitchen - it must be a well orchestrated session back there), while attractive young women took orders and ran food. If only it were warmer and the floor was sand and everyone were barefoot - it would feel like an expat hangout on the beach in Mexico. I'd say the food is only Mexican in that the dishes are named things like "taco" and "burrito" - the flavors were pure California (or Seb if you will). I think this place is probably a hit with vegetarians - there were so many yummy sounding veg options. Sadly, I struggled to love my food. Even after salting it, salsa-ing it, and lime-ing it, I was still not finding the sort of rich flavor I associate with Mexican food. I think if I had more "the surfers you used to hang out with in college made dinner, and it's actually pretty darn good" in mind vs Mexican food I would have been more prepared. The tacos were just huge piles of meat on single tortillas (the chicken had a nice grilled flavor, and the pork was moist, but the steak was super bland - I think it steamed rather than seared - and everything needed seasoning). A bit of dressing on the greens wouldn't have gone amiss. The pork stuffed potato was definitely better and the thing we ate the most of. The chips and guac were solid. Service was friendly, and vibes were indeed good. The outdoor patio looks like a great place to hang out on a summer evening. Now I know that it's not a place that is going to scratch my taqueria itch. My advice - come chill, and get a something stuffed spud of some variety, and let the good vibes roll. read more

It is so nice to have fast, delicious and organic food in town. The food tastes clean and doesn't make my stomach upset like the other Mexi places in town that are so greasy in comparison. I LOVE the baked sweet potato stuffed with their smoked pork, it is unbelievable! I have had some bland tasting tacos in the past, but the last time we went they were delicious, full of flavor and grilled perfectly. It is one of the only places in town I can find a meal that is not too expensive, but made with the quality ingredients that I expect from a restaurant. I would give it a five, but there is not always consistency from the different cooks in quality of food and their chips are really sad. read more
