The portions are huge, the service is great, and it's a chain that I don't mind visiting a few times a year. My Overall Rating - 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - The Pappadeaux in NW Austin is very nice, there are many large, round tables, cozy booths, and it buzzes with energy. Thick, white tablecloths, wood panel walls, and Cajun music add to the atmosphere and transport you to a fine dining restaurant in New Orleans. Except it's 100% ok to be casual. It feels upscale and laid back at the same time. 1 Star. Service - Our server was excellent. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had bad service at a Pappadeaux. Kudos to the training staff, because the servers are very attentive, polite, patient, and will customize anything for you. 1 Star. Food - As soon as you sit down, a nice, oven warmed bread loaf and whipped butter is brought out. Pro Tip - Ask for Scampi Butter to eat with the bread. My go-to dish is the Catfish with Beans and Rice, but on this visit, I went with the lunch gumbo/po'boy combo. I should have stuck with my go-to dish, because the seafood gumbo was too salty, and the bread for the po'boy was overly baked. The fried oysters were delicious, but if the bread roll isn't good, it kind of ruins the entire po'boy. But Pappadeaux has a great track record with me, so I consider this a one-off issue. 1 Star. It started off rough when our waitress, Ashley, completely ignored us. We were seated immediately and were told Ashley was our waitress and would be with us shortly with menus. About 5-7 minutes go by and nothing. We started eating the crackers at the table because we were hungry. A male waiter nearby noticed we had not been helped so he brought us menus and said Ashley was our waitress and he would see where she was. Another 10 minutes go by and nothing. We noticed an Ashley nearby waiting on the 3 tables surrounding us and she never acknowledged us. She showed 1 table some dessert options, she assisted another table with to go containers, and checked on the other after they received their food. All while walking right passed our table multiple times. I kept looking around and we were about to walk out when Mark, another waiter, stopped to check in on us. He apologized about the wait. He said Ashley was our waitress but he would get our drink order started. I thanked him and told him we were actually ready to order. He then asked what we would like. We placed our drink order and food order. Mark was very friendly and professional. He said his tables were elsewhere but he would be taking over our table too. I was glad to hear. I'm not sure if this was a miscommunication issue or what but it seemed that everyone nearby knew we were at Ashley's table but Ashley herself. Interestingly enough, after the 3 tables near us cleared out, so did Ashley. We didn't see her again. Kudos to Mark!! He was observant and noticed we hadn't been helped and jumped right in. If it wasn't for Mark we were going to walk out and dine elsewhere. A manager even stopped by to apologize. He heard what happened and offered us a free dessert. He checked in against later to see how things were. Mark and the manager are a 10/10. The food was just okay. A bit over priced for the quality and portion. Pappadeaux is a family favorite and always our go-to for a special night out in Austin. We came on a busy Friday evening with reservations and, as always, the food delivered. The house salad with honey bacon is a must, the oysters are consistently fresh and incredible, and the Pappadeaux platter never disappoints. Unfortunately, this visit was a rare miss on service , slow all around, no refills, and they were out of several staples. It was frustrating because the service here is usually just as good as the food. We're not giving up on this place, one off night won't undo years of great experiences, but hopefully just a fluke. My wife took me here for my birthday which was back on the 13th but this was the first time we had to celebrate it. She had never been and my being Cajun she wanted to bring me here. I have had it before but it has been over 10 years since my last visit. The place is very nice, the lighting and the decor is spot on, the staff was excellent, we were seated right away and the person who seated us wished me a happy birthday, which was nice. Our waiter was fine, since Shana answered that it was her first time he stated he has a speech he had to give, he was fast and answered our questions but seem distracted maybe? Like he didn't really want to either be there or serve us. I don't know, but he gave off a vibe like he was annoyed, I don't know how better to describe it. We started out with a 4 piece of garlic bread which was amazing. I ordered a Cajun chicken tender and fried shrimp meal which came with fries and a side of dirty rice. It was very good, the dirty rice was tasty, the shrimp was good and the chicken tenders were excellent. They make the sauce in house daily and it was very good. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! I had a very disappointing experience at Pappadeaux on Father's Day. My family and I took my dad there because it's a place we frequent and usually enjoy. Unfortunately, his bacon-wrapped shrimp came out burned--not once, but twice. After sending it back and reordering, we waited another 30 minutes only to be told that they had run out of shrimp altogether. To make matters worse, my dad's drink took about 30-45 minutes to arrive. I want to be clear that our server was great and did everything they could. This experience was not their fault. However, the food execution and communication from the kitchen were extremely disappointing, especially on Father's Day. We left feeling frustrated and upset, and it was unfortunate to have such a poor experience at a restaurant we have supported for years. read more

My family celebrated my grandma's 95th birthday at Pappadeaux a few months ago. We had a party of about 20 people. My mom tried to reserve a private room, but it wasn't available so we had two large tables in the back of the main dining area. As we made our way to our tables, the entire restaurant applauded (my grandma had on a birthday sash and tiara lol). It was such a sweet moment and I wish I could have recorded it. I started with the Garden of Eden which is a vodka based cucumber drink. It was very good and refreshing and I enjoyed the Tajin rim. For apps we had Fried Calamari and the Crispy Alligator. I didn't try any of the calamari but I did have a piece of the alligator. It was good, but extremely salty. For my entree, I ordered the Naked Snapper. It was very flavorful, but unfortunately it was too salty for my preference. It came with sautéed spinach which I enjoyed. Our server David was really nice and did a great job with our large party. The food is yummy and the ambiance is fun! I first went to the I-35 location before this one opened. The consistency is great, and the service is super prompt. The only drawback is the price. It is kind of expensive relative to other mid-market chain restaurants. If they could just drop the prices 10-20% then I would probably come here more often. read more

Why only 2-stars...? Well, the 1st one is for the cleanliness of the place. The second star is for the fresh fries I received, and the old-skool jams that were playing. The hostess station had three staff members there. The one who sat me was nice, but the one who spoke to me seemed to not want to be at work. The raw Gulf oysters during winter months are always tasty and plump. They offer east coast oysters now also. The fried shrimp fried catfish, fish dishes, and Mardigras pasta were a big hit. We also had the crab and spinach dip, which had nice lump crab meat on top . Our server was really great-- friendly and checked up on us throughout the meal. The restaurant is spacious but doesn't get too loud even when busy. There's also a nice bar area with bar seating and small cocktail tables so this restaurant is good for groups and solo diners. There is ample parking and you can easily make reservations online on their website. I gave it 5 stars because Pappadeaux is good at what it does at the price point it is at. I have been dining at Pappadeaux for many years. I was happy when the NW Austin location opened. Up until the last year or so, everything was great. However, the last three times I have been there, the service hasn't been very good. Several months ago, my wife and I ate at the bar. The bartenders acted as if we didn't exist. We finally got our drinks. Then it took forever for the salad to arrive. Then within about 30 seconds later, our entree arrived. I had them take it back until we finished our salad. The entree was brought out to us on two more occasions in shortly after we received our salad. We asked bread three time and finally received it. The manager had to come over and apologize. Last night, our family decided to try it again. Drinks took a really long time to arrive. Our appraiser arrived prior to the drinks. Entrees were served right after salads were served, even though the server asked us if we wanted the entree after the salads. Once again, the manager had to come over and apologize. There was a birthday that I mentioned on the reservation. They forgot about that. I guess other people have had the same poor service since the dining room was almost completely cleared out by 7:30. Haven't been to this place in YEARS and thought I'd try them out. The food was good. We had the sword fish topped with lump crab and pine nut chimichurri sauce with a side of truffle potatoes. I give it an 8, only because that potatoes could've been a little more tender. The sword fish was GREAT and I love chimichurri sauce, so that was right up my alley. That sword fish was cooked to perfection. The waitress called it "The steak of the sea." I would've preferred a tad bit more crab for the price of the dish. The truffle oil mixed well with the chimichurri sauce. The potatoes were, to me, a bit under done. We also had the fondue which is a goto for me and the flavor was still as good as I remember. She had the new coconut drink and I had a 3 wheel motion, both were BOOZY and hit the spot. The crowd was on the light side and the game was playing for those who watch sports. The staff were laughing and tending to their duties, some even had good suggestions on other drink to try on our next visit. All in all, we had a great time and a good meal, then left satisfied and ready to hit the couch to have a movie watch us, because we definitely were napping after those drinks. read more

We ate at with friends at Pappadeaux on Research last night. There were 5 of us with a 6:00 reservation. As usual we were greeted cordially, seated immediately and attended to by Armando in short order. However, things went south after that. Although we arrived promptly at 6:00, our salads did not arrive til 6:45 or so and our meal did not get to our table til about 7:30. We had scarfed down all of the crackers and bread on the table and asked for more crackers. Our server kept our water filled but did not offer another bit of bread. About 7:15 our server apologized and said the kitchen was plating it now and few minutes later a manager assured us our meal was on the way. We were debating heading out to another restaurant when our meal finally arrived. You would think management would have offered a dessert on the house or taken off a small percentage of the check. All we got were shrugged shoulders, an apology and by way of explanation "new management". Were the managers cooking? We were quite disappointed with the overall experience which tainted our enjoyment of the food which was a bright spot. However, although we choose Pappadeaux with some regularity, it will be a minute before we go back. read more

I made reservations for eight people on a Friday night. Our table was circular and it was set up right across from to go door. I was mortified every time that door open it blew cold air to our table. They were late in regards to sitting us, and then the server never gave her name. She didn't recognize everybody at the table, my meal actually everybody else ate as the time for food to be delivered was slow. They serve my food on the other side of the table . Then one of the waiters came up to me and told me I was cut off because I went up to the bar to get drinks for some of my friends. I was OK with that. I didn't make a scene or lash back. Then out of the ordinary, the manager gives me a gift card for the inconvenience made no sense, right? The next day, one of my friends went up there with his wife and daughter and they got $100 gift card because the daughter and his wife's food was cold There are opportunities that they need to have corrected. I visit Pappadeaux on Research almost every Friday, but after my experience tonight, I may need to find a new go-to spot. When I arrived, it wasn't busy yet, so I was seated immediately. However, I noticed right away that we didn't receive eating utensils upon being seated, which was unusual. That should have been my first sign that the night wasn't going to go smoothly. Service was incredibly slow from the start. It took a long time for the waiter to even come over and ask about drinks. Because of the delay, we went ahead and ordered our food and appetizers at the same time. My son ordered a Coke, blackened trout with fruit, and I ordered mozzarella bites, a frozen Perfect Patron, and water. The Coke came but no water. When I asked the waitress for my water, she acknowledged it but made sure to let me know it would be a while before my margarita arrived. By the time my drink finally arrived--right before my food--my son's fruit was still missing. I also realized that I still didn't have any eating utensils. I had to ask the person who brought the food to bring me some, which should have been handled long before my meal arrived. As I was about to take a sip of my drink, I noticed something floating in it. When I looked closer, I realized it appeared to have legs. Disgusted, I waited for the waiter, who took a while to return, and when I showed her, she casually said it looked like something from the lemon. I had to point out that yes it's something on the lemon it was a bug. She still did not apologize and just said she would get the manager. Meanwhile, my son had finished all of his food, and he's only 11. If you've been to Pappadeaux, you know the portions aren't small--so that tells you how long it took for the manager to come over. When she finally did, she also didn't apologize, just asked if I wanted another margarita. At this point, my son's fruit still had not arrived. When the fruit and my replacement drink finally came, the drink was on the rocks instead of frozen. At this point, I was over it. I asked for the check and mentioned that the drink was incorrect. Instead of apologizing, the waitress just said, "I didn't put in the order for your drink, but I can get you another one." Given how long it had taken just to get this one, I declined. Then came the worst part--when the waitress brought back the check, my card was missing. I was furious. It took her a good 20 minutes to find it, and when she finally returned it, she still didn't apologize. Nothing was taken off my meal, and after everything that happened--not even an apology. They truly didn't care. Despite all of this, I still gave her a tip. Honestly, I shouldn't have given her anything. Overall, this was an extremely disappointing experience. I come here nearly every Friday and have never been treated like this. The service was slow, the staff was dismissive, and the lack of basic courtesy and accountability was frustrating. My husband and I are regulars at the Pappadeaux on Research Blvd, and we've always had exceptional experiences--until tonight. Unfortunately, this visit was extremely disappointing and completely ruined our evening after a long work week. From the moment we were seated, our waitress, Chase, made us feel rushed and unwelcome. She was not pleasant and seemed uninterested in serving us. On two separate occasions, she cut us off mid-sentence--once when we were trying to order drinks and again when attempting to order an appetizer--telling us to "give her a minute," only to immediately go assist another table she had already been attending to multiple times. It came across as dismissive and borderline rude. We tried to move past it and enjoy our meal, but things only got worse. When our food arrived, my meal was missing the rice it normally comes with, and my husband received the wrong type of rice. The staff member who brought out the food informed us they were out of dirty rice and asked if our server had told us--she had not. When Chase returned, her attitude remained unprofessional. As I declined substituting the rice, she responded in a condescending tone, saying, "So you ain't want to substitute for anything?" as if it were an inconvenience to her. At that point, I calmly asked if there was an issue and explained why her behavior felt disrespectful. Her response was dismissive, stating, "It's never that serious to me." I asked for another server, and instead of handling the situation appropriately, she walked away and proceeded to discuss the situation with a group of servers and the manager, Armando, using exaggerated gestures. The group openly looked at us and laughed, which was incredibly unprofessional and uncomfortable. When the manager finally approached our table, he came with an attitude and seemed completely uninterested in addressing our concerns. He repeatedly interrupted me while I tried to explain the situation and focused only on the rice issue, completely dismissing the real problem--his server's behavior. At that point, we decided to take our food to go and leave. The only positive part of the experience was another server, Robert C., who stepped in to help us. He was kind, professional, and genuinely tried to improve our experience--we truly appreciated him. It's very disappointing to be treated this way at a restaurant we've supported and enjoyed for so long. If you're craving seafood and that nostalgic, old-school vibe, congratulations, you've found your habitat. It even comes fully stocked with old folks! (I'm allowed to say that, I'm over 50.) The food's legit. I went with the fried shrimp because... come on. That's the seafood's cheat code... if you can't make good Fried Shrimp you fail. The sauces were all really tasty, and who'd a thunk it, the fries came in a very close second to the scrimps. Super fresh, dangerously snackable, and fully capable of disappearing before you realize what's happening. Overall, it's a solid, old-school seafood spot with a Cajun nod. As much as I love this place enough is enough! It's currently 3:57. I've been waiting on my online order for almost 40 minutes. You'd think I had a special order or something but no, it's just a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. Yes, I paid an extra 15% gratuity for take out even though they never brought it out and I had to go in and speak to three people about it. Finally someone proceeds to had me the salad which had been sitting on the kitchen counter for god knows how long... no refund in the tip, no sorry we messed up, nothing! I first tried Pappadeaux's over 4 years ago when I visited TX. I decided it was my favorite place an frequented every chance I got. Today was the first time I tried a new location since our permanent relocation to TX and I really regret it. First our server was lackluster in energy. Honestly? People have bad days and could be tired, I don't fault him. He did his job and that's all I can ask for. HOWEVER, there's 2 things aside from the lackluster meal and variation in menu that I abhorred. 1. I got the aged rib eye with the added lobster tail for my baby girl. She enjoyed the lobster, I hated the steak. I asked for rare and received medium. As a rare steak preparer and connoisseur- yuck. Evidence attached. 2. When I ordered the add-on lobster, the menu read 29.99 and then all menus seemed to disappear once I got the check charging the lobster for 39.99. Obviously they know they messed up and instead of owning that? They stood their ground on $10. We spent upwards of $150 i do not care about a $10 difference - it's the principle for me. I really don't have anything nice to say about this location. There was a sweet group of women celebrating St patty's Day next to us and a nice family behind us - legit the highlight of our meal. The gator nuggets have a new flavor? And new sauce? Didnt like it. Googled that most locations have some sushi available and that's what my daughter originally wanted so the fact that this location did not have that, we already settled, we're starving, and the lobster took so long to come out - i didnt even bother sending the steak back bc my baby was hungry. I hated this lunch. The disappointment lies more in my decision to come here than a child knowing anything about what was going on and I love that for her. We ordered the crab cake for an appetizer and it was DELICIOUS! Then I ordered the naked Snapper and hubby ordered the naked Redfish. Both were good, but I liked mine better. It was to come with truffle potatoes, but we got green beans instead, but that was fine with us. We did order dessert. Cream brûlée for me (good) and I can't remember what hubby got. Our waitress on the other had was very slow. I do have to give her some grace because she had only been working 1 month. I also noticed the nice refresh recently, from the new uniforms to the updated menus, and even the food feels like it's gotten a little upgrade. Everything tastes fresh and well put together. We like to go to Pappadeaux when it's in a city that we visit. There have definitely been some menu changes and higher pricing. We started with the Crab and Spinach dip for our appetizer. It was cheesy and delicious. My fried shrimp entree was great. One of our favorite entrees use to be the Cedar Planked Salmon with the corn and shrimp topping. That's no longer on the menu. The service was good. They had just opened for the evening. It's a nice size restaurant which has a bar area and an outside patio area for dining. They have plenty of parking available. This specific location has gone downhill. Pappadeaux is amazing but not this location. Slow service and way undercooked fish. Ordered a salmon and redfish meal and both were extremely undercooked. The server tries to say o our fish is "sushi grade" and that's how we cook it. lol. Yea right. Have been to several locations including the airports and never had this issue before. Also they forgot the scallops on the salmon meal. They did have a manager stop by to apologize but between that and the extremely slow service I was expecting maybe a little off on the bill but nope. In fact they charged me for 2 rounds of garlic bread lol. I thought they had free bread in years past. I will not be back at this location. It was understaffed, not really clean, and sort of loud for not even being that busy - that had sounds you can hear from their kitchen buzzers or something out into the dining area. read more

A go to anytime I have family in town! Very classy space that can be a good go to for any occasion. I also think they have a party room that can be reserved for larger groups. The server was very friendly and helpful. Came during the Microsoft shut down, so there was a bit of a wait before being seated as they worked to get the computers back up. You get fresh bread while you wait for food. Great addition with our spinach dip. I went with a lighter meal, some salmon with rice and veggies. Delicious! Pat had the chefs salad it was huge! And had a good dressing. I had the crawfish dinner. It consisted of about 20+ crispy fried spicy crawfish tails-no shells. They were quite tasty. But candidly, tough. The red seafood sauce was excellent. They were served atop a generous serving of good french fries. Our food was not enough to get us to go back. But our server was outstanding. Always fantastic!! But fyi they changed the fried gator no longer just the fried gator with gator sauce on the menu. It's now hot honey gator. The hot honey is good we got it on the side. Not that they need any more five star reviews, I just cant ignore the very pleasant dinner that we had on Sunday. Pappadeaeux's interior harkens back to an earlier time when the entire space was designed to project comfort and elegance. Add to that our server, Keshia L., who was a delight and we had a great time. Keshia was completely knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu which we really appreciate. The food: the shrimp and trout were good but the truffle potatoes brought it down. They were undercooked and everything just ended up being pretty heavy and buttery. The highlight was the watermelon lemonade actually. The vibe: the kids loved the decor and the kids menus with crayons. I would say it is a pretty family friendly place which I appreciate.
