Needed a sugar fix, and from the display cases everything here looked absolutely flawless. I ordered both the Green Tea Layer Cake and a Chocolate Croissant. Admittedly, I found myself to be a bit disappointed, for the price and from the looks of everything. I had expected both items I bought to taste as wonderful as they had looked. The Green Tea Layer cake wasn't quite anything like I expected. While the strawberries and whipped cream used to fill and top the cake were excellent, the cake itself was on the dry side and missing most of what was the advertised "green tea" flavor. As for the Chocolate Croissant, that too was a miss for me. The croissant itself was somewhat flaky and topped off with a chocolate drizzle but it didn't taste fresh, maybe because it was sitting out all day. It's a shame because everything on the shelves is beautiful to look at but sadly the items I tried certainly fell short in terms of taste! The prices are more expensive than the multitude of bakeries in Chinatown, but given the dearth of competition in the Central Square area, it makes sense why they are able to charge higher prices. Some of my favorite items: Cronut: a cross between a croissant and a donut made famous by a bakery in New York. At $4, it is one of the more expensive items, but I can't help getting one every time I visit. The cronut is deliciously buttery and flaky on the outside, with a smooth creamy filling. Strawberry cream croissant: one of my favorite desserts. A buttery croissant filled with sweetened whipped cream filling and fresh strawberry halves. Very satisfying! Frappe: They have a special where every day between 2-4pm a frappe is 50% off. Cakes: I have bought a lot of Paris Baguette cakes over the last two years because they are so beautiful. Prices are usually between $26-$35, and the cakes are mostly sweetened whipped cream based (like most Asian bakery cakes). They aren't overly sweetened and taste light and airy. read more

My friend bought me the Cappuccino cake for my birthday, and I finished it all in one sitting. The coffee sponge cake and coffee buttercream were so addicting, and it was adorned with delicate pieces of dark chocolate and a couple of pirouette cookies which added depth and texture. Located at the entrance to the H-Mart (in the food court) Paris Baguette had a fantastic selection of baked and rich items. They carry small cheese cakes which are the same style as Uncle Tetsu (if you're familiar with the Montreal or NYC location). Prices are fantastic. We got a few slices of cheese cake, a cheese cake and a couple other random baked goodies including one that was meant to resemble a hot dog but was sweet and rich. No complaints at all. There's a secret as to how the giant macaron could maintain its textural integrity at triple the normal size, but they do it. And they do it for $2.50 a treat. Speaking of texture, dat cronut. (Cue Pillsbury script!) Tender, flakey, butter forward, sweet without being saccharine - it's a proper pastry liger if there ever was one, and calorically situated to fit the $4 price tag. Located in front of Hmart in the heart of Central Square, Paris Baguette is a bakery/cafe I visit from time to time. It is brightly lit, clean, and has a very organized set up. You start at the end of the counter, pick up a tray, place a parchment paper on top, and pick up baked goods of your liking, and wait in line to pay. I would skip the drinks and get right to the pastries. The drinks aren't bad but nothing special in my opinion. Pastry-wise, there are cakes, bread, croissant, mochi, macarons, etc. you name it. OH and don't forget the cronuts!! I was so excited to see cronuts here, especially since I wasn't planning on going to NY anytime soon. I had the regular cronut - it was buttery, crispy, and flaky. A sweet custard filling poured out as I bit into the center. I enjoyed it, but it didn't blow me away. It was almost too greasy and overly sweet for me. Nevertheless, it was still worth a try! They also have patbingsoo (shaved ice) but ONLY in the summer. I walked away disappointed when I visited in October. I mean, yes I get that it is a summer treat, but it is ALWAYS the season for ice cream. :P Pastries here are more pricey than your usual Asian bakeries. This is a very very nice bakery and I was very excited to try out its strawberry fresh cream cake as a birthday cake for my mother in law for the first time. However, its employees are unprofessional and don't know what they are doing. Wednesday, I went online to place the cake order, however I realized in the online order that it says the Paris Baguette in Cambridge is "temporarily unavailable." Therefore I am confused if this location accepts online orders or not, so I called in and asked "Hi when I tried to place a cake order online, it says 'temporarily unavailable' so does that mean I have to place my order on the phone?" The girl didn't answer my question about the online ordering and immediately starts "placing my order" via the phone. One comment I have for the unprofessional customer service is how when the girl asked for by debit card number, she listened to the first 12 digits and when I finished saying the 12th digit, she skipped to ask for my phone number. What kind of debit card in the world has 12 digits and not 16 digits? I have to explain to her for a good minute how my card is 16 digits and not 12 digits so she should copy down 4 more digits. After I gave her my debit card number, she asked for my phone. She said "if there's a problem or if we need anything, we will call you." So then I hung up the phone. However, she never called me back. Friday, when I called in and want to confirm my cake order, the guy that picked up the phone couldn't find my cake and said "I will call you back when I find it." However, he never called me back. After I waited for an hour, I called back again and the girl picked up and I told her "Hi I called before and you guys told me that you couldn't find my cake. Have you guys found it yet?" She said she didn't see my cake and asked me "when did you leave it in the store?" I was confused what she asked so I asked "I am sorry?" She said "when did you leave the 'keys' in the store?" So then I have to go on and explain to her I said "cake" not "keys." So then she told me that she couldn't find my order. I'd been lustfully perusing Yelp photos of Paris Baguette for a while, so when I walked by here feeling a little hungry and thirsty I promptly forgot about the water bottle and granola bar in my bag and walked on in. Paris Baguette is a gleaming, air-conditioned paradise of desserts. You serve yourself pastries using your own wax-lined bamboo tray and set of tongs and order cakes and drinks at the counter. So many things looked amazing, like the packaged peanut crunch bread and the blueberry chiffon cake. I like how they have a good balance of savory and sweet pastries--the sweet potato garlic pastry seemed interesting. I also appreciate that they have ingredients and calorie data on everything since it's easy to go crazy at a place like this. After much deliberation, I went for a new item, the creme brûlée "bon bon" (although it was more of a fried pastry). I don't really understand how they engineered this: it's a ball of yeasted dough filled to the brim with a thin vanilla custard. It tasted like a Krispy Kreme doughnut. The bottom was a little soggy, and the top could have been more torched to reinforce the "brûlée" aspect of the pastry, but overall a high quality, indulgent treat, especially at $1.75. I should have heeded the reviews and skipped the bubble tea, but I just can't say no to boba. I paid $0.95 to add boba to an iced green tea ($2.50 for a small). Sadly, the tapioca was overcooked--slimy without any chew--and seemed like it was soaked in white sugar instead of more flavorful honey syrup. Disappointing, but maybe it was a one-time thing? Paris Baguette would be a great place to do work or catch up with a friend because it's quiet and clean inside. Although the line can get long, there's plenty of seating. This place is attractive to be sure - bright lights displaying rows of baked goodies behind shiny, modern counters. I'm a fan of the famed cronut so that would get 4 stars and sadly the red bean donut would get a 1. I wanted to try their cream puffs but it looked so dry and on the verge of shriveling - had it been sitting there for a few days? That's the impression I got. Cronut was flaky, the custard was the perfect amount of sweet with good proportions, too. Slightly too greasy, but the flavor of this baked goodie was superb. The red bean bun was a huge disappointment. Very dry, like I was eating stale bread and the inside had a red bean paste that didn't have much red bean flavor to it. Very bland. After 2 bites I was done - and that second bite was one too many. No sense in putting on pounds for subpar dessert. I'd suggest getting red bean desserts at a Chinese bakery or at a good dim sum place. I suppose a good rule to go by would be to see which goods are in abundance later in the day - if they haven't sold many they must not be that great! I should have totally gone by that rule. Service was standard. Egg tarts, a fave dessert of mine, are $2.25 - I'd rather get them for $0.75 or $1 in Chinatown (and I did the other day!). The prices are a bit high and while the displays here look attractive when you first walk in, the actual goods don't look that appealing upon closer inspection (again, too dry!!).
