1star=employee yelling for the ONLY two customers to come pick up their food. Customers have to stand at the counter to order and then get up from their table to go back to the counter to pick up their food, and there is even a plastic tub for customers to clear their table, yet credit card machine gives diners the choice of tipping 10-15-20% WHY tip when instead of delivering food to the ONLY two customers in the entire cafe, the LOUD employee SCREAMS your order. This place used to be wonderful. But things have changed. The lines moves half as fast as it used to since they computerized their cash registers and some items aren't fresh anymore. But last week did it for me. While I was standing in the incredibly slow line to get my item I looked into the kitchen and saw a man butchering a small animal on the same wooden table on which I've seen them knead bread dough. COVID precautions were good. Bought several items. 1) chocolate mousse cake was excellent. 2) carrot cake was okay. 3) cheesecake was excellent. Not overly sweet, and nice fluffy texture. 4) almond croissant was a major disappointment. It looked delicious but was under cooked and soggy, like it had been left in a pool of water for the morning. Since the other cake items were good, I will probably give the bakery one more shot, in case the croissant was a fluke. read more

This is a little hidden gem that I wish I found sooner. I frequently visit Monterey to visit family and this is the first time I heard about this place. We happened to be staying at a hotel right above the ever bustling Alvarado St. Since Alvardo St. is in walking distance, we took a stroll to find something to eat but the lines were outrageous. Then my nephew mentioned Paris Bakery which is a couple blocks down, parallel to Alvarado. Paris Bakery is located on the corner, but unless you know it is there, it is easy to miss. The bakery itself is small, but they have an abundance of pastries and food. My family loves bakeries and we often walk out with more than needed. There were a total of 9 of us but split into 3 orders. The ladies working there were extremely patient and didn't rush us despite a line out the door. Just for my family of 4 we ordered 2 ham and cheese croissants, breadsticks, cinnamon twist, 2 chocolate covered strawberries, a custard pastry, a fruit pastry, a turkey sandwich, coffee and a couple of cookies. The total came out to under $40 which was surprising because I can easily spend that anywhere else. Everything we tried was fresh and delicious. My daughter liked the ham and cheese croissant so much she wouldn't share. And it even had eggs which she didn't mind. Everything was devoured right away with the exception of my turkey sandwich which I brought for lunch the next day. Even though I ate it a day later, the bread was soft with a nice crunch outside and the lettuce was still crisp. There was so much more I wanted to try so I will definitely be back. read more

My sister recommended this place to me and I'm glad she did, as I would have never stopped in if it wasn't for her! It's a little off the beaten path for a Monterey tourist like myself as it's not near Cannery Row and not on the wharf either. We ordered an almond croissant and the chocolate ganache. The croissant was great, buttery and flaky with almonds spilling over the sides and the paste inside very tasty as well. Chocolate ganache was great as well, nice and rich. A good combination for me! My first time here and I will definitely be coming back. The workers were very kind and attentive to the needs of all customers. Together, my friend and I ordered a cream cheese danish, bread pudding and spinach quiche. I wish the danish had a little more cream cheese filling but it was soft, buttery and flaky. The quiche had a lot of spinach, but it had great flavor! Same for the bread pudding! It was very flavorful without being too sweet. I loved the freshness of it. Also, everything was very affordable. I was shocked, given the quality of the food and location of the cafe; I was ready to spend a pretty penny. However there was no need. This cafe is doing a great job with social distancing and it is greatly appreciated. I will be back for more! read more

Today I order a cob salad to go and it is the most pathetic excuse of a salad I have every seen. Their cob used to be really good loaded with all sorts of stuff, Today's I can barley call it a salad let alone a cob salad. I get that the cost of all things have gone up. Excellent pastries, but I received the worst customer service this morning and felt personally disrespected by the lack of professionalism by the woman who was suppose to be helping me. I understand you are EXTREMELY busy with a line out the door because your baked goods are so delicious, but when I say "good morning" and receive a stern and condescending "what will it be" instead of acknowledging my greeting is truly demoralizing. Thank for being the only negative experience during my trip to Monterey, literally had the perfect trip until I came here. GREAT PASTIES THOUGH!!!!!!! The pastries were good but customer service was not. Staff member completely forgot my 2 coffee orders after I paid. It had been some time and I went back to the register to check on my coffees and they never put the order in. The staff member that assisted me entered the coffee order into the register and then said "You don't have to pay for it." Of course not, I already did! I repeated my orders and a few minutes later they said my Cafe Au Lait was ready and I asked about the 2nd coffee and they looked at me confused. I said I ordered a Cafe au Lait and a Chai Latte. Was super excited to come try this place! It looked delicious from the pictures. Was very disappointed with the customer service we received. There was no indication to where the line started or ended or even a number system. It was confusing and when my mom got to the front the woman asked if she was ready and as my mom was asking if she was in the right part of the line the woman was super rude and just staring at her like she was stupid. We have never been to this establishment before and we're from out of town celebrating my mom's birthday. So we were very upset about the service we received and ended up leaving. There was 8 of us in total so they lost a lot of business just because the lady couldn't answer a simple question of how the line worked. Won't ever be coming back here. Such a hidden gem in Monterey. This bakery will not disappoint, their chocolate banana croissant, need I say more?! It has real bananas with chocolate chips. If you like banana you definitely need to try it! But my favorite thing here was their sticky bun! I wish I would've gotten 5 for the road home because it was that good! The size of the croissants has dropped by about 40%, and there was virtually no filling- and yet, they were five bucks each, so their price has gone up. I wish I could have gone here every day! On a Saturday, I awoke from my hotel and wanted something light for breakfast. There are a lot of breakfast spots in the downtown area - and almost all of them ended up with a line - so finding the right spot does take some work. I decided to walk a bit further and grab a pastry, but didn't realize the magical spot I was walking into. Located on the corner two blocks from the busy Alvarado street, this unassuming spot will absolutely blow your carb loving mind the moment you walk in: -First case has cakes and desserts - small cakes, large cakes, tarts, slices, eclairs, apple streusel, ganache, opera cakes, so much you won't be able to take it all in as they are as beautiful as they are delicious! -The second case are the breakfast pastries - multiple types of croissants, danish, muffins, scones, breadpudding, pineapple upside down cake (which I should have ordered!) and stickybuns. -The third case are cookies - jelly cookies, elephant ears, biscotti, chocolate chip, peanut butter, sugar, meringues, and more. -And behind all these are breads! Baguettes, sour dough and brioche loaves, parker house rolls, challah, pretzel buns. Seriously, I walked in just wanted a pastry and a coffee, but then wanted to buy everything. I ended up with a raspberry croissant and a red eye. Both were excellent, and I enjoyed relaxing on the patio while my friends woke up. If not for car issues, I would have easily come back Sunday. If you are in Monterey, visiting, or just want some carbs in the area, I highly recommend coming here. I would also suggest catering. read more

Found this place the first day we were in Monterey and we went back every morning. It reminded us of bakeries we visited in France. We had the almond croissant, cinnamon raisin roll, almandine tart, apricot danish, ham as cheese croissant. All were delicious. The cafe au lait was good but came in what seemed like a bowl. I can't vouch for the place itself, but I sure can report that the croissants they make are good! Our hotel brought in food from Paris Bakery for their Sunday breakfast, which was a very nice touch. We enjoyed both the croissants we had, the ham and cheese one as well as the veggie one, which turned out to just be spinach. There wasn't a ton of filling in either one, but that flaky dough was perfect. If we had more time in Monterey I would have gone to the actual location and tried many more items from their bakery case. read more

As tourists, we couldn't help but be gleeful at the proximity to the main public parking garages. We made a stop on our way back from Fishermans Wharf to get reasonably priced pastries for the road. We got an assortment for our drive down the coast. The croissants were buttery and flaky, and the cakes were moist. The little fruity tart tasted super fresh. The real star, though, was the princess cake. We got the smallest one, just perfect for two. The rosy marzipan shell was a wonderful surprise since we hadn't read the description before purchase. The mousse inside was somewhere between clotted cream and clouds, and all of the flavors blended together in delicate and heavenly harmony. This USED to be our go to for lunch once a week after the gym. Not any more since it was sold. The staff , what's left of them, is as great as ever but the new management has changed the menu and the prices considerably. We went again yesterday to see if things had improved, sadly not. My friend said her sandwich was dry , tasteless and NOT on the usual type of bread. My favorite "veggie delight" sandwich is now close to half the original size, with no avocado that I could find, plus, ordering (and PAYING) for the addition of cooked beets is no longer an option. Evidentially, we are not the only ones who are not happy w/the current situation. This place used to be packed ,w/a line out the door at lunch time and tables full of happy locals, which certainly was not the case when we were there at lunch time on Tuesday. Word is getting out about the changes.....not to mention there are plenty of other local eateries in Monterey to spend our time and money in. Hope the new owner is reading this and saves the Paris Café before it is too late. read more

We came today around 2pm and they were just about to close down everything. Luckily we made it in and got to try their cream cheese croissant! It was fluffy and had just enough creamed cheese; not too sweet. We really wanted to try their cake slice with almonds around but it was sold out fast! They serve different pastries which is really nice and the shop smells great!
