I was back in my old stomping grounds last week and found myself stopping into Paseo for a Midnight Cuban sandwich on the most glorious of sunny Seattle days. The line was long, but as always, worth the wait. The pork, the onions, the bread, the sauce... I don't know what I love best about it! The black beans are also to die for! Paseo is small, but I'm glad to see that even though they've undergone a remodel since the last time I was there, they've resisted the urge to expand. I have only had the opportunity to eat the Cuban roast sandwich. Well made, flavorful, perfectly cooked pork and grilled onions. DELICIOUS! I will eventually try other items on the menu but for now I am stuck ordering the same thing. I would give Paseo 5 stars although I have been a few times when they have run out of items on the menu. I applaud them for being busy but come on dudes.. Order more.. You don't need to be running out of the good stuff before I get there. If they have everything on the menu, you won't be disappointed. After years of misses I finally was able to visit. Worth the wait and all of the expectations I had put on Paseo were validated and surpassed. Make sure to bring cash. If not there is a market a few blocks up the way (north, opposite side of the street) that has an ATM which will help you build up your appetite for what you are about to experience. Not sure when I would be back, I ordered two sandwiches. The #2 (most popular) and the #5 (Prawns). My thought was to stash one until later....yeah right. The reason I give it 5 stars instead of 4 is mostly because of that chick who gave it 1 star for not having gift certificates, which to my mind is right up there as an act of missing-the-point with 1 starring Costco for not having travel-sized toothpaste. Seriously. It's a freaking shack. If it were any smaller, you could lean up four tires against the walls and confuse it for a taco truck. Hell, I've been to taco trucks with more seating. This is besides the point because it is perfectly apparent upon seeing the place that they are spending 99% of their time on making food. Honestly these sandwiches are manna from Heaven. As a person who is picky on her sandwiches and does not eat pork...for Paseo's I will always make an exception. Their pulled pork sandwiches are the best, their bread is amazing and the onions and spicy sauce added makes for one the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. And they consistently make amazing sandwiches. I have had them on several other occasions, and I am always satisfied with the taste and how filling they are. Came here on a Saturday. If you have never been here before, what I would suggest is to look online at the menu so you will know what to order. We ordered the Caribbean Roast *Most Popular*. We were given a strip of paper with numbers on it and we were number ########05. We must of waited in line for about 45 minutes. If you are willing to wait that long great. Actually as we were waiting in line, a couple parked across the street and walked in. I was thinking "whoah, why didn't they stand in line?" I found out that if you DO NOT want to wait in line, you can order ahead, skip the line, and get your food. Oh, and bring CASH! We didn't eat anything before we left, it was our brunch, and we were starving. We watched other people as they ate their lunch and it looked so good and scrumptious and definitely messy. There were only maybe four tables and all were of course occupied, we decided to just eat in the car. As we got into our car, we took out our sandwiches. Hunger can easily make a person impatient and cranky. The boyfriend was a little cranky because as much as the sandwich looked amazing and smelled amazing, it was way too messy and a little greasy to eat in the car. We decided to drive home about thirty minutes later. Those sandwiches are great if eaten once you get them, because after thirty minutes, bread gets tough, lettuce gets soggy and you'll definitely need a fork to eat them. Would I ever come back? A few months ago when it was announced Paseo would be closing, I almost cried because I hadn't had a chance to experience the awesomeness everyone had told me about. Then when it was announced the restaurant was purchased and would be reopened, the same as before but under new management, I totally did a happy dance. The opportunity to finally be able to savor this Seattle staple finally came this evening. My boyfriend and I decided each to go with the most popular classic pork sandwich. Oh. My. I came here based on the stellar reviews, but they were sold out of sandwiches :( I purchased an entree for $12, but it didn't really do it for me. The salad was covered in beets, which I dislike. The spice level of 5 was slightly spicy, but not 5 star hot. The portions were large and the meal wasn't bad, but wasn't something I'd rant and rave about and adore forever. I order the scallops, the caribbean, and the paseo press. All sandwiches were delicious, but for me the scallop one was the perfect sandwich. Perfect balance between the texture of the scallops, and the small amount of spiciness from the sauce. The other sandwiches were much more substantial, and had quite a bit more inside them. I have never actually visited Paseo, so this review will be devoid of insight regarding things like ambiance, service, or restroom cleanliness. But a few days ago, my bosses did us the favor of bringing in lunch for everyone from Paseo. It was one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. And, pity, I didn't even catch its name. Big, chewy roll filled with pulled pork so tender and--I'll say it--delectable that it makes my teeth ache just thinking about it. Fat caramelized onions, jalapenos, crunchy lettuce (romaine?), a smidge of what tasted like garlic mayonnaise, and fresh, aromatic cilantro. This isn't a terribly useful review, I suppose, as it's common knowledge at this point that Paseo's sandwiches are amazing, but I still felt I had to pay my respects. My brother-in-law went through a lot to share these sandwhiches with us. We were spending the afternoon at the zoo and he knew it would take too long for us all to stand in line here for lunch. So he got the menu from the website. Then we phoned in the order and he walked from the zoo to Paseo's and back with our sandwhiches and boy am I glad he did! I got the tofu without cheese or aioli. It was a vegan sandwhich dream! THe tofu was soft and tastey. The onions were to die for! When my husband declared his sandwhich (pork) too rich with all the onions, I gladly took his- damn the pork juice- these onions were that good! The bread was yummy. Now two complaints- I ordered it as spicey as it could come and the spice was barely noticable. I would have loved more spice. And they cut the bread asll the way through, which makes everything fall out as you eat it. If they left the sides of the bread attached it would hold things in. The meat is SO tender it melts in your mouth! (yes that is what she said). Pork is easy to make dry and they definitely slow roasted the pork to perfection! The flavor is impeccable, just the meat itself has great flavor, not that salty and almost sweet tasting. The paseo marinade tops everything off and it's a party in your mouth with every bite! I love that they use romaine lettuce and not the iceburg water lettuce. Be prepared to use napkins Asian style. It gets hella messy and your face will be covered (yep, that's what he said). So if you're going to eat this elsewhere maybe picnic style, make sure to have grip loads of napkins/paper towels and hand sanitizer/moist towelettes. Paseo is quality and they always do it right. Do I even need to review this place that already has 4.5 stars on yelp? I have been hearing about Paseo for over a year (ever since I began visiting Seattle) and I finally made it out on a Saturday before noon to get in line for one of their famous sandwiches. We ordered and split one Cuban Roast and one Midnight Cuban Press then hit up the liquor store for some micro brews and found ourselves sitting at Green Lake for a beautiful lunch. Friendly man took my order. Small venue, but there are a few tables and chairs for a decent seating area. Not a place you hang around; eat and go. Caribbean pork sandwich is most popular and I can see why. It's fricken good! Think of all the curse words you know and just say them all at once. That's how I felt when I took a bite of the Cuban Sandwich here. I visited Seattle for a few days and tried as many popular Seattle spots as I could and was unfortunately disappointed at many of those places. But Paseo made up for those anti-climatic moments. Although it is located outside the city, it is WELL WORTH IT to make the trip. As an LA native, it is definitely not like anything I've tasted before and there are no comparisons. However, I can tell you it's hearty, flavorful, and messy. Get those napkins ready boys and girls, you're gonna need them. You will definitely not look attractive while eating this sandwich so if you're just getting to know your boyfriend or girlfriend, going to Paseo could either be an icebreaker or a deal breaker. It's up to you to choose your fate. The place itself is more like a modern shack than a restaurant with limited seating and a fairly decent line to order. I opted to go to a nearby park (honestly I don't know if it's considered a park because it's so small) and sat at a bench. I noticed that a lot of people just went somewhere else to eat it, which I also considered doing but then I thought about how the sandwich would lose its power as time passed by so I settled for the park. I was warned about ridiculously long lines for lunch, and possibly running out of meat. Showed up on a winter Wednesday morning around 1230 and NO LINE. Win #1. Boyfriend ordered the #1, and I got the #2 per my brother's recommendation. The two sandwiches are relatively similar except for the meat. The #1 had thick slices of pork that were juicy, flavorful, and it's an awesome combination of giant onions and sauce and jalapenos. The bread is crispy and chewy, and offsets the intense flavor of the meats. I liked #2 better of the two. It's definitely the messier one with pulled/shredded meat and large pieces of grilled onions. It's this simple. If you used to know and love the original Paseo, you'll find the new Paseo mediocre at best. If you've never had Paseo, then you'll probably enjoy the new Paseo a lot more since you won't know what you're missing. Compared to the old Paseo, the Caribbean Roast sandwich now contains dry pork that is WAY overpeppered. The pork was the KEY ingredient and the new Paseo's recipe doesn't live up to the original; not even close. I've given it two chances and neither time came close to the Paseo I remember. UPDATE - The REAL Paseo is back and reminded me just how far superior it is to this place. When the new ownership of Paseo took over, they did some very good things. They added another register, started accepting cards, and did their best to continue to offer this city a way to still enjoy their beloved sandwiches. Then there were some not so great things: higher prices on some items, smaller sandwiches, and worst of all inaccurate recipes. The good thing about this particular place is that it's in a residential area far from the downtown area. There will still be a crowd, but at least you won't have to deal with as many tourists because they're not willing to go out of their way. The Caribbean roast sandwich is their signature, and it is a great deal with its marinaded pork and onions completely packing the sandwich. Make sure to use plenty of napkins because it does get pretty messy, either from pieces of meat falling out or from the oils and sauces getting on your hand. Their other sandwiches include chicken or various seafood if those suit your tastes more. There are some seats indoors, but they also have some outdoor seating in front of their shop which I found to be much nicer. I think I really lucked out here when I came. They were in the middle of a very large phone order (I think something over 50 sandwiches). I ordered a Caribbean roast, as any first timer here should do, and the kitchen had just completed one for that phone order and was bringing it out as I completed my order. They just handed that freshly made one to me, rather than set it aside for the phone order it was intended for. It's nice to see that they're willing to accommodate customers while fulfilling other large orders; there are definitely places out there who refuse to do such things. read more

If you are going to Paseo expecting a complete dining experience with the server politely scraping the crumbs from your table while recommending the best Barolo to go with your Marble Cheese Truffle Petits Fours, you mis-calculated. This is a high volume, high turnaround, and cramped sandwich shop. If you are so pissed off by the lack of space, cashiers attitudes, or options, maybe you don't have the ability to taste how wonderful their food is anyway. I feel for you brothers and sisters. If they are running out of food take this as a good sign, the food is fresh, and come back earlier next time. Maybe your good karma is running low because you just bitched out the person behind the counter who has been working their butt off all day to serve you some of the best food in Seattle. I went at an off time (Thursday at 3:30 p.m.), didn't have to wait to order or get a table, and was happy to relax and wait on the kitchen to do its magic, which hundreds upon hundreds of reviews and a really high rating foretold. I ordered a Midnight Cuban Press. It probably took about 15 minutes for me to get my food, even though they were empty. That wasn't a concern for me, but it's something you may want to consider. You may also be offput by their not cleaning the tables and leaving out disinfectant wipes for you to deal with. I actually found that charming, since nothing makes me cringe like seeing a rag that's been all over the place getting near a surface I'm going to use. The sandwich was tasty, but not a real treat. I'm not very price sensitive, and I didn't have to wait, so I can't imagine what you'd be thinking if you cared about spending close to $10 on a sandwich and had to wait a long time. I think baguette is a mistake with this kind of sandwich--too hard, too thin, doesn't press right. Peppers and meat were pretty hard to taste through the haze of their spread. The caramelized onions were a big hit, but if that's all I wanted I could have gotten a savory croissant at Fresh Flours. read more
