At first I thought that the place was hyped as a lot of Yelp reviews on the local restaurants were pretty much 4.5-5 stars. I gave this bakery a try and it definitely proved me wrong! My wife and I got the Vanilla Bean, Chocolate, POG, and Ube Malasadas. They were as fresh as it can be-- and the fillings were so damn good! The pastry itself was soft and perfectly baked; and the fillings were tasty in their own corresponding flavors. We went there for hot malasadas. We were obviously not very good at doing research: it turned out that they only made hot malasadas on certain days, not the day we were there. We had loco moco instead and blueberry turnover and lilikoi (passion fruit) shortbread. Both bakeries were amazingly fresh. You can definitely taste fresh fruit in both. Great coffee, great pastries, fast and kind service. We went twice on our 5 night stay. The coffee was great and the staff were really kind. One of the employees was singing and clearly enjoying the work. The star of the show for me were the savory filled pastries we got. The spinach and gorgonzola was excellent as was the ham and cheese! On our second visit, we got the donuts that they make on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We were ready to fly back to mainland and wanted to take some Malasada for the family. Thank God we found Passion bakery just a mile from our hotel. We stopped at the place a day before and checked if we could order for an early morning pickup and as promised they had it packed ready for us. Yes if you want fresh Malasadas you have between 7am till sold out sometimes before noon. They make fresh every mornings except a couple days when closed. So check b4 you go. read more

She kept yelling Chloe and that her order are ready. She even wanted to give her order to us. They do treat people better if they are haole though. We tried ten different malasadas, macadamia nut sticky buns, haupia hand pie, and a lilikoi muffin on four different days and they were all delicious! Would not recommend this place. Malasadas were the size of maybe a golf ball--maybe a quarter size of normal malasadas. The wait was pretty long and we were planning on ordering a full breakfast but decided against it when other customers who had been waiting 20 min told us they stopped taking food orders except for malasadas. When we finally got to the counter it sounded like they started taking food orders again, but we didn't chance it since we didn't want to be stuck waiting for it with who-knows-when it would come out of the kitchen. Go early for fresh, hot masaladas! Location is small, only a few people are allowed in at a time to order, and your food will be brought out to you. We came by around 9AM, and it took a few minutes but nothing unreasonable. It was nice to see that they have regulars, who recommended the loco moco and other heavier lunch dishes. We came for the masaladas and other breakfast foods. The masaladas were a good size, served hot and fresh-made, and we tried the ube and passionfruit flavors. I typically prefer more savory options, so we also got a few of those - I was underwhelmed by a goat cheese and spinach scone, as it just didn't really have much flavor. I would probably stick to the more traditional Hawaiian options here, they seem to be done well. read more

I don't know if I can accurately express the love I have for this place in a single review - if you are on the fence or haven't been to Passion Bakery yet...you HAVE to go! This is something I will not budge on when you're visiting Kauai. They have the absolute best malasadas I have EVER had, and their food is amazing! We came here twice in the 5 days we were here - once just for the malasadas, and once for brunch. There will be a long line, however, it moves pretty quickly. The staff are also very friendly and welcoming and service was great. The first time we went, we got the filled malasadas with ube, haupia, P.O.G., and espresso. Our favorites were the ube and haupia - these fillings were not too sweet, light, and fluffy. The P.O.G. Malasada was a little uneven in the filling so we didn't get as much as we wanted to be able to give a full review, and the espresso was a little too sweet and runny. The second time we came here we got the Kalua pork loco moco, and one haupia and lilikoi malasada. The Kalua pork loco moco was mind blowingly good. The gravy was not too thick and the perfect amount of savory, paired with the egg, rice, and mac salad. I LOVED their mac salad - probably ranked my #1 on this side of the island! Wow...the Malasada is soooo good. Not too sweet at all which we like. So soft and fluffy. Perfection . Can't decide on the flavors so we got 4 different flavors. My favorite is the POG flavor but other flavors were good too. Can't go wrong. We tried the macadamia but sticky bun and it was good a well. Unfortunately they don't serve Malasada daily, it's like every other day if I'm not mistaken. Glad we were able to go on our last day in Kauai lol. I came here early and lined up like everyone else for the malasadas. Line went quick but it took over 20 minutes for the food to come out after ordering. I got just about one of every kind and I must confess I was not blown away. They're fine. Like big mini donuts stuffed with garishly colored whipped cream that carries a faint taste of what it's supposed to be, and overall just hits with a big hammer of sweetness. What a delightful gem! It was walking distance from my hotel during my stay in Kauai (at Kauai Shores). I stopped by my first morning for breakfast- since it's a small shop, they only allow a few individuals in the bakery at a time. I ordered the chorizo, potato and egg sandwich (easy on the chipotle aioli), iced coffee and the malasada (which the only have on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays I believe). I've never had a malasada but it's basically the same idea as a bombolini. I got the passion fruit version and it came out first and was nice and hot and thankfully not too sweet. They have a few tables outside so I sat nearby, they will call your name when your order is ready. The chorizo, egg and potato sandwich came out piping hot and I devoured it (I also ordered it again the last day of my stay because I figured why try something new when you already know what you like?). On the Tuesday that I went back again- they had malasadas but they are so popular that there was a wait for them, at least 20-30 minutes. This time I got the POG or passion fruit, orange and guava- so good! I didn't get to eat it right away because I was saving it for later but it was still tasty a few hours later at the airport. I would definitely recommend this place for breakfast (didn't get to try lunch) and their malasadas- a little gem in the Kapaa area. read more
