We visited Passion Bakery on our way out to the airport around 8am. We ordered pastry puffs, a dozen malasadas (sugar and cinnamon, vanilla, Nutella and Oreos) and white chocolate macadamia cookies. Malasadas was fresh and delicious. White chocolate cookies were individually wrapped, chewy and yummy even after 3 days. This was a wonderful bakery and highly recommend. Lots of options of filling for the malasadas. Order their malasadas, you won't be disappointed. We repacked them in zip locked baggies for our flight back to the mainland. Staff was friendly and accommodated us when we changed our malasadas order. It will be a definite stop on our return trip. Wish we found them earlier. read more

Stopped for breakfast before a day on the river. It was a last minute find but pretty good! I ordered the chorizo sandwich and it had great heat especially with the added aioli. I wish the bread was something better than just a white hamburger bun. The orange slice was refreshing. My bf got the half loco moco and it was also yummy. A line is your food friend! Order at counter then grab a seat outside. Your buzzer goes off when your order is ready. Very chill vibe. Very friendly staff. Unpretentious. Flip flop friendly! Can only speak to the coffee and pastries, as we didn't order any food, but both were very underwhelming. The drip coffee was so watery and stale - I think it actually may have just been decaf they were passing off as regular, and the espresso drinks were flavorless. I appreciated the fresh cinnamon sugar malasada, but it's just a hunk of bread (not worth the trip alone). And the pastry I had out of the case was just OK. For what it's worth, the breakfasts I saw others eating did look pretty good. Just don't go for the coffee! read more

My husband got up this am to score some malasadas from Passion Bakery!! They only make them go order 3 or 4 times / week and people have mentioned them over and over. Close to the hotel and so yummy. Malasada's were amazing- they only make them Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays though so make sure you check their schedule. We also had the Paniolo breakfast sandwich and it was large in size and good. The staff there went out of their way to help us find a place to sit. We ate here twice and it was delicious both times! On vacation we came to try some local favorites plus this was close to our hotel. The first day we came for the malasadas but it was Monday and unfortunately they don't make them on Monday's. Instead we ordered the moco loco with spam and it was delicious, great flavors. We also ordered coffees and guava puffs which were also good. We returned on Tuesday one of the days they make malasadas, we got there early and a line quickly formed. We ordered one of each flavor all were delicious. Great donut like texture but lighter and filled with sweet cream fillings my favorite was the ube or vanilla flavor. The line was around the building, but it was worth the wait! Tried a Mango, Nutella, POG and Haupia malasada all DELICIOUS. went back for more a few days later! Wow!! This place blew my mind. Hands down the best food we've had the last 14 days on the island. Go here now!! It's a quaint little spot. Walk in and place an order with the super friendly guy at the counter. Just placing our order was a treat. Fantastic service no doubt. But then the pager went off for our maladadas. OMG. Let's talk about some of the best malasadas I've had anywhere. Even Maui doesn't compare. The filling in these bad boys are a creamy buttercream type with amazing flavor. Definitely made with love and passion!! You 100% have to try the POG flavor. Man. Worth all the extra calories and then some!! Then the pager went off again. This time for our "Tha bomb" omelet. Yes indeed this baby was absolutely tha bomb!! Filled with perfectly spiced fried rice with various breakfast meats. This delicious spicy sauce drizzled on top. Talk about good food!! They are only open 9am - 12pm Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays. But it's absolutely worth making sure to be here during open hours. We leave the island this Saturday. But before I had to the airport, best believe this Alaskan girl will be standing in line at 9am for some malasadas and to try another item off the menu. When in Hawaii, try the malasadas! For me, malasadas are best first thing in the morning fresh out of the fryer. I went right when they opened and there was a line outside. Everything was well worth the wait. There were other breakfast options but all I wanted were the hot fresh malasadas. Parking was easy and ample in the morning. My favorite flavor would be the haupia. I also ordered coffee which perfectly balanced out the sweet fluffy malasadas. There was outdoor seating but I took it to-go to the beach. Kauai coffee is A+. This place is definitely worth the visit if you are craving fresh malasadas and coffee to pair with your Hawaiian sunrise. read more

We were on our way for a hike and wanted to stop for a coffee. We ended up getting 2 pastries because they looked delicious! There's ample parking, we didn't see the storefront right away as you have to walk a path to the inside of the location. It's a pleasant area with lush greenery and nice size patio to sit down and enjoy your breakfast or coffee. I came looking for one thing... Hot, fresh malasadas. This may be the only spot on Kauai to get them freshly fried, and while they weren't my favorite (Leonard's on Oahu is king, and Kauai Bakery has better just 10 minutes down the road), they didn't disappoint. They are only available Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. There's a half dozen flavors including sugar, cinnamon sugar, or fillings including chocolate, vanilla bean, haupia (coconut), etc. After ordering it took about 10 minutes to make, which just means they're extra fresh! They're nice and soft and fluffy, but while the flavors were nice, they were definitely lacking in the amount of filling in each. There's a case full of pastry's as well. I tried the mounds turnover (pastry filled with chocolate and coconut) and the Hawaiian pineapple croissant, both fantastic. They also had a huge breakfast and lunch menu I didn't even peek at. The bakery is in the back of a small shopping center, but plenty of signs to point your way. They open at 7am but be aware by the time they opened there were about a dozen people in line. read more

Our first day in kapa'a, first place to eat, first local interaction, horrible experience. All thanks to Brenda!!! After placing our order and having my hands full I place my one year old baby down to sit on the counter by the door for two seconds, while I give her a sip of water and here comes lovely Brenda storming in the door waving her finger at me and shoving me with the door. Yells at me "that counter is for food! Not babies butts, SISTER! Get her off!" - to my surprise, this lady is your employee as I watched her stomp off behind the counter. We continued to wait for our food as I express to my husband I no longer want anything from here and the employee at the front counter overhears and asks what happened, I explain the encounter with Brenda and he apologizes and explains that she is like that with everyone. Another employee chimes in and informs us that none of the staff gets along with her nor do they agree with her service to your customers. Brenda swoops back around to make another snarky comment to us as we continue to wait for our order, yelling "It's just common sense!!! I can go get my manager!". I agreed, yes please get your manager as you are the one shouting at and being disrespectful to paying customers. But, she of course did not bring the manager out, another employee offered to grab her. Shauna came out and was incredibly apologetic for her behavior and amazing trying to de-escalate the situation unfortunately, the damage was done and this was the impression/service we experienced and left with. I was going to wait until I got home to write this review however, we had the joy of running into Brenda again at the Wailua Bakeshop as we tried to get one of our favorite breakfast sausage rolls one last time before heading home and just 10 minutes before they closed. Here, we overheard the conversation between this employee and Brenda as she's checking out; Brenda- "how much are the sodas??" "$2!" Brenda- "oh, not bad. That's cheaper than my work!". The employee then asks what the best thing at 'her' shop is to get, to which Brenda replies saying, "Oh nooo! Nothing! " Then mentioned something about the chefs which I was unable to hear. So, not only is Brenda rude and disrespectful to paying customers IN your shop but, she also bashes your shop and her place of income, to any potential customers. I hope you evaluate these events in great detail and do not take it lightly. It seems that your business may do much better without a negative anchor, praying on your downfall any chance she gets. I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for breakfast. The passion bakery cafe was right across the street from where we were staying while on Kauai. It's located in a small shop in the Kinipopo shopping village. You go in through one door here and exit through another on the opposite side. The inside consists of a display case filled with a number of different baked goods including sticky buns, croissants, hand pies, scones, etc. All of the selections made choosing just one difficult although my wife and I ultimately chose to split a Mac nut sticky bun. Besides the items in the display case, they also have a hot menu and my wife and I also decided to split the chorizo eggwich off of that. We sat down first with the sticky bun while the eggwich was still being made. It had a good amount of Mac nuts on the top, the bun part was super soft and gooey and the caramel sauce on it added a nice sweetness to it. Shortly after we had finished that our sandwich came out from the kitchen. The menu described it as housemade chorizo with potato and egg and coming with a chipotle aioli. It was a bit smaller than expected for the $10 that it cost but man was it good. The bun was toasted nicely and had nice little crunch to it and held all of the ingredients the whole time. Then there was a good amount of egg and it was that chorizo and aioli which really made it. They both had great flavor and a lot of spice leaving my wife's lips tingling by the time we were done. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in future. All of the food that we had here was good and we are looking forward to hitting this place again on one of their malasada days. read more

FANTASTIC! It's an understatement, if there ever was one. This little shop is a hidden gem but if you're able to make it Tuesdays or Thursdays in the morning, you're one lucky gal. I really wanted to like this little place and there were lots of people there and a line out the door so maybe it was our singular experience, but we won't go again during our vacation. We asked for the malasadas, but they only had sugar free left when we arrived at 9:30am (it's like a churro, so sugar free just didn't seem like it would be good) so we got the açaí bowls instead. We also ordered chai tea lattes. There were 5 of us and we waited about 25 minutes for our food. When they called our name they only had 3 açaí bowls, but we had ordered 5. It took another 15 minutes for the other two bowls to be made...why? Not sure, but that seemed excessive since they made the mistake. The receipt showed we ordered and paid for 5, which we showed them. Then there was the chai tea latte. Oh boy. We thought they had gotten that wrong too because each cup had a Lipton tea bag label hanging out the side. What? My husband went back inside again to ask if they had gotten the drinks wrong. Nope. They make their chai tea with Lipton tea bags and chai tea powder. Needless to say they were awful. But we were already late for our excursion so we just threw them out and left. 11-5-22 I wanted to like this place but it's a huge mixed bag. Most of the staff are very nice, others.... Well, namely one, not so much. And I guess the food kinda is the same way: 1. Mango Malasadas $2.65: Only baked fresh on 3 days per the sign. I gotta say, it definitely was good dough. Chewy and light. Excellent. The filling.... Well, not sure if it's technically good or not. Think of it something between a mango mousse and a mango jam. No identifiable fruit, but whatever it is it does taste like fresh mangos (as opposed to synthetic). 8/10 2. Macademia Nut Sticky Bun $6.25 (slice of a cake): This actually is an upside down cake of sticky buns, sliced like a cake with tons of crushed Macademia nut and sauce on top (or technically the bottom.). Odd. Well it looked gorgeous in their display but alas it tasted stale, hard, and the bottom (the swirly part that's typically the top) was especially dry. 2/10 3. Mexicano Chorizo Potato Eggwich $11.99: Yeah $12 is definitely a lot for this small sandwich. Yes it's exactly what the name suggests, chorizo mixed with eggs mixed with potatoes, none of which were especially stand out for better or worse. Don't think there was any cheese. The bottom slice of bread was starting to melt through. 3/10 4. Chili Pepper Chicken (Warden's Chicken?) $13.99: So he asked if I wanted it spicy or mild, and I said mild cause my kid won't eat spicy. But know that "mild" isn't mild. It's zero spice. I know this because the chicken is basically white, and apparently only seasoned with salt (and maaaaaaybe Chinese white pepper but I doubt it.) But that said, this is GENIUS as not only did they use dark meat, it's like 50% skin!!! Basically chicharonnes but battered in Asian corn starch-based batter. Holy f. Now..... their Asian batter isn't the best as it's slightly starchy tasting, and not all the powder has been converted to crunch, but still, the idea of it..... genius. Comes with bad rice (drying on the outside, some parts mushy) and an interesting red-spiced mac salad (not hot.) 9/10 for the chicken but you'll need to throw out the rice. Overall 5/10 5. Smoothie $9.99 + Oat Milk $0.95: They have one smoothie, and the ingredient list sounds like everything found on the island blended together. The dude suggested adding oat milk so I did. Yup, a $11 smoothie. Well I'm happy to say it's one of the best smoothies I've ever had in my life! Super fruity, a little nutty, thick, sweet, tangy and everything good. Also maybe the most expensive smoothie I've had too. 10/10 6. Coffee $3.75?: Nearly $4 is kinda a lot for standard coffee right? Anyway, it wasn't that good. I think it was burnt.
