I've been coming to Blue Chair for a while. Despite Paul's consistently less than gentle treatment, the bleach & cut have been good & at a reasonable price. Last week, I booked an appt (same as always) for (3) hour bleach. Showed up for my appt today and had to wait out on the sidewalk for 12 minutes while Paul finished another client. I always get platinum blonde NO YELLOW. Discussed that w/ Paul as soon as I was in the chair. He told me I would be better off warm blonde because I have warm skin tone and ash would make me look "sad." Huh? Reiterated I liked my hair toned ice blonde & had been wearing it like that for a couple of years. Bleach job done and hair is ugly YELLOW. I ask what happened & 1st he tried to tell me it was because my hair was still wet (like I never see my hair wet), then he said I booked the wrong service (I did not & had proof on my phone), then he tried to tell me he gave me highlights (which I did not book & did not request), next excuse was my hair was at fault, then stated his services weren't listed right on the app, ended with I should have booked (6) hours of service. He kept arguing with me, despite my saying my hair came out so well last time with the EXACT SAME SERVICE APPT, that he photographed it. FINALLY, he admitted he made a mistake and misread the app and that he thought I was getting all over color, (despite the BLEACH - hello?). His tone got nastier and he started slamming product into a bowl & said he'd fix it. As he re-bleached, he kept yanking & tugging hard on my hair with a comb, which is a big no no for bleached hair because it's extra fragile. He continued slamming things on the counter and in the bowls, then kept re-putting bleach on my hair, tugging hard w/ comb, and rinsing it, (3 times). He was super rough with me and kept flinging bleached hair on my face. All the while complaining that he better get $70 an hour & I stated the appt was (3) hrs for $200 & we were only at 2.5 hours. After forcing my head back so hard I became afraid for my own safety, I told him I had enough & left with product in my hair, soaking wet, & dripping down my back. NEVER have I been treated so appallingly bad by any hairdresser. Got home and saw a red mark on my neck from how hard he pulled my head back and there was hair missing from being yanked so hard with a comb. If I could give negative stars I would. Horrible man. This is my first impression after my appointment, but I feel that my cut and hair will stay looking great even tomorrow. I did a lot of research to find someone to correct a mistake (first time highlights that were thicker, brighter, and redder than expected) made by a different salon and found Paul. Looking through the reviews on Yelp, I was a little worried, especially since Yelp had deleted a lot of his reviews for some reason - but Booksy and Google had a lot of positive reviews, so I went for it and I am really glad that I did. From my understanding, the thing about red coloring (on brunette hair) is that it is really hard to get out or cover in the hair without going very black. I went to a color bar that recommended that I find someone who knows color correction. My goal was essentially to get my hair back to or as close as possible to my normal color, so that I could grow it out without having to color repeatedly and get my natural hair again eventually without looking bad in the process (I have long hair). Paul was the one I kept going back to on my internet searches. I did a text consultation with him (highly recommend this), then decided to wait because I got nervous and my schedule was busy. Then I finally decided to do it. 1. As another review pointed out, he was engaged throughout the entire process. Aside from being an awesome hair stylist, Paul is an insightful and observant person (amazing attention to detail). He makes good conversation, seems to enjoy what he does, and does a spectacular job. 2. I was super late (30+ min) because I got caught behind the same train twice. The appointment was already going to be long because of having to take the time to carefully color, and we were starting later than normal because of my class schedule. I was apologetic for wasting his time making him wait on me, but Paul didn't even mention it nor express any frustration with me. He just focused right on the appointment. I already appreciated Paul being accommodating with my schedule and texting him on his vacation to schedule the appointment; however, he also went above and beyond with everything I noted above in terms of by tardiness. 3. Not sure if this is typical because I have never had my hair colored before, but he took the time to paint strands individually rather than just "tossing" it on. A cut was included with my appointment, so he tidied things up for me and it turned out equally great. We ended later than I'm sure he expected because of my tardiness mentioned above, but he didn't let that be a factor in his work. Overall, I highly recommend. Just don't be late like me (plan for trains), make sure to communicate, do a consultation, and have reasonable expectations. He's really good and worth it, in my opinion. read more

Amazing!!!! Paul knows color and hair I like anyone I have ever seen. I went to him for color correction and he's given me the most beautiful hair ever! Healthy and a beautiful brunette. When Paul does your color he is engaged through the entire process. He doesn't just slap it on and throw you under the dryer - it is a very personal and u inquest experience. You guys, I'm not a natural blonde. At least, not since I was 12. Go ahead and take your time dealing with the shock, the disappointment, call me a fraud, a phony, what have you; I can take it. I really don't know what color my hair is anymore. What I do know is that for 4 years up until last October I was dying it brown from a box for about $7 every couple months. I fear large financial commitments. But I ain't no professional! And I wanted a change. And dying and dying and dying your hair and then trying to mix in a bit of bleach can often result in a charming shade similar to that of a butternut squash. Surely you know this. Enter the amazing Cana. She's cut my hair since I've lived here, but now we're treading on some serious reconstructive coloring. Takes a pro. A pro, she is. I was there for eight hours (8 hours! What a high maintenance hussy!) as she patiently applied three different processes and the finest color weave I've ever seen, all while totally humoring me and explaining every step because she knows I like to understand the process. I do not envy this woman, I have many hairs (8 hours, really?). But it came out great and after another visit we actually achieved the color I wanted without all my delicate, beaten hair breaking off at my crown. And I'm not going to drop the price, but trust me she's definitely reasonable even to the $7-box girl. Blue Chair Salon is really great too. All the stylists are super different from one another and I've seen them all do hair, and they're great and everyone chats and it's a grand old time. read more

I came to Blue Chair after an awful experience with a color correction at Bliss (this is when you screw up your own hair trying to be thrifty with home hair color and end up paying twice as much to have a professional fix what inevitably goes wrong.) My home hair color was live-able, just not what I wanted, but the girl at Bliss made it a LOT worse and then refused to fix it. Emily at Blue Chair was willing to take me on and was able to fix the horrible color job I'd gotten at Bliss. I've been back to see her twice since then, and my hair comes back to life a little more with each visit. Between the hair color damage, and my need to be able to wear my naturally very curly hair both curly and straight, Emily's cuts and color somehow manage to make my hair look healthy and low maintenance. I worked at a salon part time through college and have had my hair done by very talented people over the years, and I can easily say Emily is one of the best. She listens and works with you to give you what you want, and isn't afraid to recommend something else if she thinks a different approach would look better. The home hair color / Bliss experience was a disaster, but it all worked out in the end because now I have an awesome stylist! read more

I hate getting bad haircuts, and I hate complaining to the stylist after a bad haircut. I feel bad because there is nothing that can be done. The hair is cut and all I can do is wait for it to grow out. Good gravy, did I get a bad haircut here. Maybe the guy was having an off day but this wavy haired girl is miserable and uncomfortable in this hair. The overall shape is wrong and my waves have been cut incorrectly (in my 'hair-owner' opinion - since I'm no formally trained hair stylist). I chose this salon for the Vidal Sassoon training but have been sorely disappointed. My hair lacks movement and ease. I guess since I don't have the stick straight hair Vidal, himself, used to work with, I got gypped on a good cut. oh well, me & my hair are moving on. The worst color ever! and a terrible cut too. I've been avoiding writing this review because I hate to badmouth anyone but wow. I went to Paul for highlights and a trim and came away with brassy, stressed out ugly locks and the strangest haircut with Crystal Carrington bangs. When I emailed him about my dismay he did offer a re-do but frankly, I did not want him to touch my hair again as the initial service was so bad. It felt like being offered a free meal at a restaurant that gave you food poisoning. No thank you! I explained my feelings and requested a refund or partial refund. As our email exchange developed he became insulting. We never came to a resolution and I just spent another large sum of money to repair my hair. I hope this review gives you pause and saves you from frizzled, unflattering ponytails and a depleted bank account. read more

I was desperate. Moved to Portland about 8 years ago I have tried over dozens of salons giving a couple of times to make a fair judgement. My requirements were not over the top. I needed a short stylish haircut with a little edge. Not old lady short, not boy short, not punk short-- short professional w style. Couldn't find anyone... I settled with a mediocre to downright bad hair for years until.....I found Paul on Yelp Paul is not a schmoozer, not flamboyant and not pricey. Paul can cut hair. Period. He has clearly paid attention to the latest cutting methods and used those well honed skills to give me a proper short stylish hair with an EDGE. To be fair this is my first visit but I am confident I've found someone in Portland who can cut hair. You ask how do you know it's a good cut? I used to cut hair. I received text message at one 140 asking where are you are you not going to show up for my appointment I respond back saying hello you change that appt to 4. read your text messages between stating so. response back from Paul, sorry cant do you at 4. No apologies or trying to reschedule. If a person can't even keep their schedules straight I would be wary of scheduling any future appointments with this individual read more

If you're looking for someone who's going to listen to everything you have to say about your hair and the hopes you have for your new 'do, this is the guy. I really enjoyed Ashley's company as an individual, so it pains me to leave a negative review ... I saw Ashley and clearly explained what I would like her to do to my hair. Instead she did what she thought would look good and completely disregarded my requests. Instead of returning my hair to it's true ashy brown and keeping my highlights as I had asked. She did an all-over drastic dye to an almost-black, chestnut brown. Instead of taking off no length and just shaping up my overgrown layers and bangs, she chopped off almost two inches of length. Furthermore, my front lengths are completely uneven and there is an area near my jaw-line that is two-inches shorter than any of the other surrounding hair. (Basically it's a gaping hole left by her haphazard use of scissors.) It's an obvious error and completely embarrassing. Just in time for the freaking holidays! The only positive is that Ashley was able to execute a cute a-symmetrical bob for my four-year-old daughter. A cut much like her own. Over-all, Ashley lacks the most important skill to be a good stylist: listening and understanding the desire of her client. read more

Amazing doesn't begin to describe how great Paul is. I came to paul in desperation after my hair was destroyed by another stylist. (Where a hat for two weeks destroyed). Paul quickly put me in recovery mode and I left my very 1st appt with a refreshed head of hair. I now see Paul faithfully and after every appt I receive compliments on my hair. I have been going to Paul for five years and have always had fantastic haircuts that consistently receive compliments...which is a first for me. I have very difficult hair. It is extremely thick and heavy, has a couple odd cowlicks and waves stubbornly in places. Making it worse is that I am not very great at styling my hair. Additionally, at most I want to spend five minutes on it...and feel lucky to even have that much time with my two kids. When I moved to Portland, I tried several high end places and while I left looking great, I could not redo the style and within a month my less-than-perfect styling attempts were pointless because the cut would be outgrown anyway. After explaining my situation to Paul and giving him a basic guideline (not wanting bangs), he worked to give me a low maintenance, very stylish cut that I could style myself. He told me that even if I got caught in a windstorm it would look great. And it did! Even better it looked great after a month, then two and even three months later. It was a little more work to style as it got longer but it looked like I had purposely cut it longer, not let it go. Needless to say I have been a regular ever since. read more

I have been going to Blue Chair about a year and have been continually impressed by the skills & knowledge of Paul. I have had platinum blonde hair for the past 6 years and a year ago I moved from the Seattle area to Portland. I had the same hairstylist the whole time in Seattle and constantly received compliments on what a great job she did. So I was very nervous about switching to someone else when I have been successfully growing out my hair for 5 years (it was at my chin when I first bleached my hair, now it's a few inches from my waist). When I started going to Paul, I was absolutely blown away at the difference in skill level & understanding of color tones. I told him to just fill the roots & use whatever toner seemed appropriate for my skin tone. The result was absolutely gorgeous & complimented my skin tone so well *I* would have believed I was a natural blonde. With my previous hairstylist, if I ever asked her to change the tone to more golden or more ashy, it typically turned out... off. I think a lot of hairstylists are like this; they have one good method for working with blonde but they don't understand it well enough to really change the tone. With Paul, I have changed the tone of my hair 3 times in the last year & every time it has turned out fantastic. Even though it's an all over colour he seems to find a way to leave very subtle streaks so that it's multifaceted & natural-looking. Beyond that, he's a fascinating person to talk to & will definitely give you a straight answer. So, bottom line: absolutely worth the money, especially if you like to change it up a lot & experiment with your color. :) read more

I first went to Paul a few years ago when it was too hard to get down to my previous stylist in another city. I had been seeing her for at least 10 years, so I was nervous about finding someone else I would like working with. I had a pixie cut at the time, and needed to make sure I could find someone who could keep it looking fresh, unique and feminine. I consulted with Paul, and was immediately comfortable in his presence. Over the past 4 years, I've changed my hair a bit here and there, and it always comes out looking spectacular, both color and cut. Warning: I got the worst haircut of my life from Paul just last month. Confounding because the first time he cut my hair, a year ago it was great. He kept the layers long and made it curly. This time though - the top layers are so short it's almost a mullet. I thought maybe he just had a bad day. But no - I went back to him several days later for lowlights. He applied them without foils which I thought was cool because it took less time. HOWEVER, when you use this technique you are supposed to 'dot' the hair dye onto the roots near the scalp. He never did this. So the minute I walked out of the salon, the 'lowlights' already looked like they had 3 weeks outgrowth. In addition, I walked in with almost a full head of blond hair and walked out with only 3-4 blond highlights left. It honestly looks like I tried to color my hair from a box and missed some places. I really liked the guy. Had good talks with him. But am posting this to warn others. I am devastated and and his prices I can't afford to get it fixed. I could never in good conscience recommend this guy to anyone. read more

I would give this salon four negative stars if available. I called and talk to Paul to discuss the color of my hair and what I was looking for prior to making an appointment. My hair had gold tones brought out by a recent professional perm and I wanted to have an all over blond coloring. He said that he could and set up the apportionment to allow extra time if needed. It took me an hour and a half to drive to the salon upon which I arrive a little early hoping to get in faster to avoid rush hour traffic on my way home. That day, the temperature was in the 90's. I went into the salon to find that it was just a room rented in a building. As I walked in, he was just finishing up with a client. It was 1:40 pm. He said that he needed to go get something to eat, so I couldn't wait inside in the air conditioned room because he was going to close the salon and leave. So, I had to wait outside in my car, baking at 90 while he ate. If that wasn't bad enough, after he arrived it took him all but about two minutes to tell me that he would have to bleach my hair, that it would cost over 300 dollars, and take five hours to do so he wasn't going to do it. How unprofessional. He saw what I look like before he went for lunch and could have mention it then instead of having me wait in a hot car for nothing. Even more, I spent 25 dollars in gas and three hours and 20 minutes of my time for that type of disrespect. I ended up going to a hair stylist that works out of her home. 40 minutes and a all over color toner gave me the color that I wanted for 50 dollars. Which that, I can say with confidence to save your money and go some place else. read more

it was March 2011 & my girlfriend had been in Portland for about a month. She is a yelp user & & saw favorable reviews of Paul & the Blue Chair. She colors & cuts her hair about every 6 weeks. About a week after seeing Paul she called & was terribly distraught. so much so that i flew up to see her that weekend. her hair was trashed. falling out, ratty & breaking off. it looked like she was malnourished or other wise sick. terrible. she releated a story of Paul not paying attention to what he was doing. he was preoccupied with a new employees lack of work ethic. After a couple of attempts at salvage she gave up & cut it very short. Even then what was left looked terrible. That was over a year ago & it is just now getting near the optimal original length. She is not prone to complain but i feel compelled to say something. This has been a longstanding source of distress & embarrasment for her. At times difficult to address adequately & to watch. My head is almost shaved so I can only speak as an observer. If you go especially if you are a new customer consider mentioning to him that its important to you that he pay close attention to what he is doing. Every one has a bad day so i cant rate him a "me thinks not". but be sure you pay attention to whether or not he is. read more
