Hands down, the best Italian place I have ever been to. Simply amazing food for an amazing price. The atmosphere is very inviting and the space is well lighted, and many people come here on their lunch break. It does get very busy, but the orders come out quickly (they told us 25 mins but it ended up being 10). All the pastas here are to die for, and everything else on the menu (pizzas, paninis, desserts, etc) look worth trying. The pastas and salads come in half and full portions, but I'm telling you: the half portion is bigger than many full portions at other restaurants. Ask how big they are before you order! My boyfriend and I ordered the full traditional spinach salad and a half order of the canestri alla fungi to share. Both dishes were incredibly and full of flavor. The pasta was the best I've ever tasted; it literally melted in my mouth in cheesy glory. We left full, satisfied, and wishing our stomachs were bigger.... Love love love!!! read more

Paulie's holds a dear place in my heart. I was first introduced to this restaurant a little over a year ago, and I've since been here countless of times. I've raved about Paulie's pasta to so many people and have been able to also bring some of them with me :). Although I've only ever tried the salmon (pretty good) apart from the pastas, I've heard their other menu items are also delicious. Some of my go-to's here are the Canestri alla Funghi, Canestri & Broccoli, and the Fettuccini Alfredo with Chicken added. The chicken is so good oh my GOSH, I can't explain what makes it so good. It's honestly pretty plain in the grand scheme of things but with the pasta, it's MWAH (just wonderful)! You have the option of the half order or full order when you get a pasta dish, and both portions are enough to have me leaving the place really happy. Bread included with your order! Parking can be a bit hard to find sometimes cause the lot is pretty small, but I suggest just parking along a nearby street and walking over. Had lunch here today. I had the Italian sub with Italian potato salad. I did not care for the potato salad. it was too oniony for my taste. The Italian sub was good, but it had some kind of aeoli or some type of sauce on it so I could not finish my sub. I ordered it with no mayo not realizing there is some kind of sauce included on it too. I prefer oil and vinegar instead of sauces on Italian subs. My friend had the meatball sliders with pasta salad instead of fries. Meatballs were mushy, not enough sauce included, and the bread was not toasted. The pasta salad was delicious. We both ate it. Because we didnt care for the other food, we went back and ordered fries. They were very tasty, but could have used a little salt. We also ordered coffee which was delicious. I had the pesto pasta. It was well made and I liked that they added nuts to the dish. Healthy doesn't mean you have to compromise on taste, you know! I've been a Paulie's regular since I stumbled upon the (now nonexistent) Holcombe/medical center location in 2004! The line does get a bit long at peak times and moves fairly slow, but the counter service is friendly and helpful. I love the sandwiches on the menu, especially the shrimp BLT and salmon sandwich! Their potato salad is great, but the pasta salad is phenomenal! Their pasta dishes are awesome--try the Canestri alla Funghi, you won't be disappointed! The portions are sizable, so I'd stick to the smaller portion. Their tea and ginger lemonade is tasty! Oh, and don't forget to try one of their desserts. I hear their amazing at Christmas time--can't wait for that time to roll around! Parking has never been a problem for me, I just parallel park on Westheimer. We arrived looking forward to amazing Italian food. What we got was a flavorless tossed salad that could have been right out of the bag. Our pizza arrived at the table looking very appetizing, but when we took our first bite it was cold as if it had been sitting. We asked for it to be heated. Instead of making us a new one, they put it back on whatever cooking apparatus they used and then burnt it. The pasta was flavorless. This place is great. We got food to go and we were staying in the medical center and the food was still hot when we got to our room. The pasta with mushrooms was really tasty. The guy taking our order recommended to have Italian sausage with it and it was on point! My friend got spaghetti with meatballs and that was so good too. Flavor was great and both entrees were WAY MORE THAN ENOUGH for us two. I'd say it's enough food for 4 people. We waited in the restaurant for our food (didn't wait long) and it was super clean and my friend commented that the smell of cleaner was slightly in the air. Awful !!! I'm Italian from NY and the food here tonight was just inedible. I ordered the "Pizza Vinnie" which tasted worse then a Tostino pizza I ate back in high school. My husband ordered a salad which consisted of wilted, half dead, arugula with supposedly grated Parmesan cheese which tasted like what I imagine candle-wax would taste like. He also ordered the "Bucatini Amatriciana". The sauce for the pasta was unripened cherry tomatoes sautéed in to much oil and bacon. This was an oily hot mess. I assume Paulie is Italian but, truly needs to revisit his Italian Heritage. You're better off doing yourself a favor and going to that awful place they call "Olive Garden" !! Good luck. read more

At the onset of this cold front, I stumbled in on Paulie's on a cold December night. My eyes must have been bearing the burdens from the whole day of studying I just endured. I wasn't hungry but a class mate of mine wanted Italian food. The man at the counter said with his soft brown eyes in a manner that made the whole dining area warm "what would you like?". "Eggplant parmigiana", she said. The egg plant was served very warmly with a generous amount of marinara sauce that carried Loudly the traditions of tomato artistry Italy is known for, at least to American dining culture. This however was not the star of the dish... Toast. And not just regular toast. This toast was unlike any other toast I'd ever had. This toast carried the remnant of some roasting mechanism with its toast marks...I've still yet to understand what apparatus could have toasted this toast so precise to have just the right amount of crunch as my teeth met its outer layer...yet reserved just the perfect amount of cloud like softness on the inside. It wasn't even buttered but some how the mixture of textures with egg plant marinara sauce on top struck me with a pill that was almost too tough to swallow..I'd never in my life known toast until this...and i never will in my life meet another toast like this one... You order from a counter, the guy had real talent dealing with me, I had no idea what I wanted so he told me in detail about the top dishes and helped me decide. Your given a buzzer and you go up for your food when it's ready. They bus after. They guy next to me has the chicken Parmesan and said it was wonderful but suggested next time I try the shrimp scampi. Warning huge portions. My half order of pasta is a full order at most restaurants don't let its size fool you, it doesn't lack at all in flavor. Happy hour starts at noon so half off beet and wine. Even better! The only disappointment I would have to say is the checkout process, and check out your required to make a decision on tipping,This is essentially a self-serve restaurant you serve your drinks you pick up your own food. Are you sure you leave a dollar or two as a courtesy on our last visit we decided not to tip, The cashier and mediately stop talking became quite cold and distant and our food took much longer than normal. So we will not be returning as a result. We feel that it's a restaurants responsibility to pay the employees and living wage in this type of restaurant. And not pass the buck. read more

I came here yesterday because I was craving THEIR pasta, not anyone else's. I've been here a few times and the experience has always been good. The staff are friendly and always smiling when I'm there. The food is pretty good as well. Last night I ordered the fettuccini alfredo with salmon on top. The salmon costs extra and the fettuccini comes with no meat unless you ask for it. Even though I ordered a half order, the helping was generous, and I was unable to finish it. The food is pretty good, but it's not the best Italian I've ever had. (It's definitely far better than Olive Garden.) Still, the ingredients are good quality and the price is reasonable for what you're getting. They also have a good selection of wine, so I'd recommend getting a glass to enjoy with your dinner. read more
