saw this place on a lot of food articles for the best lobster rolls in Boston so I really wanted to try it during my visit! the lady who took my order was v nice and when I asked her about the mayo that was in it, she assured me that you couldn't taste it, which was right! they were not skimpy with the lobster AT ALL as you can see in the pic, and every bite had a good amount of lobster. I'm not really a fan of the meat found in the claws since it's kind of rubbery imo and there was a lot of that in the roll. the clam chowder wasn't as thick as I had hoped for, but it was a little better with the oyster crackers! I thought it tasted kind of bland, but my bf thought it was too salty... honestly, the quality wasn't what I was expecting, especially after seeing the many glowing reviews. A little pricey, but it's worth it. The customer service was a bit too much, but it's worth it. My husband and I got the clam chowder and hot lobster roll with fries. There's an extra charge for the fries, and they weren't that great, so honestly, just stick to one of the sides that come with the regular price of the roll. The clam chowder was worth it though. We've been loving New England clam chowder, and Pauli's was no different. There was an issue with our food, which was unfortunate for our first time visit, but it was addressed quickly and resolved even quicker. One of the workers there came over to our table to apologize, too, which was appreciated. However, he took it too far by coming over (and interrupting our meal) at least three more times since, and by trying too hard to mend the situation. Wow, this is what a Lobsta Roll is supposed to taste like!!! My bf and I had originally found Neptune's next door, which supposedly has the best lobster roll in Boston. It was a 30 min wait though on a Thurs, which doesn't sound too bad. But we just walked around, and saw Pauli's next door. With several hundred reviews and 4.5 stars, AND also a lobster roll, AND no line, we were like what the hell, let's try it! So glad we did. I really enjoyed my Lobster Roll. It was $19.99, and on the smaller side (think of a hot dog bun full of lobster). The lobster was amazing, but it really did need the combination of the slightly toasted bread and probably too much butter to go with it. OMG it was amazing!!! On the west coast, we have literally nothing to compare it to. The size was small, but to be honest it was perfect. One doesn't realize how rich a lobster roll is until you're about halfway through eating one. it's so rich, that the small proportion is right on point. Lobster roll came with chips, but upgrade and get the Dirty Salt & Vinegar ones. This definitely made my day. Ambiance - you order, then scramble to find a table. The restaurant itself is very tiny, so you might wait 5-7 mins for a place to sit. Since the restaurant is so small, the tables are all crammed together, with small eating quarters. A little awkward. Also people are walking in and out, so the door constantly opens/closes with a cold draft every few mins. But what do you really expect for a fast food type of place? Loved the service. I knew I was going to have a lobster roll at some point during my Boston trip. But I hadn't decided when or where. Getting a little hungry while in the North End so I Yelp for local restaurants. Pauli's shows up as a great place for lobster rolls so I give it a try. After finding the lobster roll on the menu, I ignore everything else since I know what I want. I order and ask if they can make it without mayo. The cashier explained that the mayo is already mixed in and they toss it in butter. No problem. While paying the $23.52, my initial reaction was that I just bought a really expensive Diet Coke since the lobster roll was $17.99. Looking at the receipt, I see they charged me $19.99 for the lobster roll. I then conclude that they raised the price but hadn't changed the menu pricing. After looking at the menu again, I see that the lobster roll was $17.99 but the butter was an additional $2. I would have preferred to not have it tossed in butter but I thought the cashier said that I couldn't change the way the lobster rolls were prepared (ex. no mayo). She never asked if I wanted butter or not. Not a big deal. Just be aware. The lobster roll was TINY. For $19.99, I was expecting a much larger roll. In fairness, I haven't had a lobster roll in Boston in many years so I have no idea how much the price of lobster has increased. But if I lived in the area, I cannot imagine frequently spending $24 for such a small portion. The roll itself tasted great. The lobster was fresh, the bun was warm and buttery. I got a "highly recommended" from a friend of mine to check this place out. It was my first time checking out this town and I wanted some delicious lobster rolls. Store: clean, but tiny...so grab your delicious goodies to go, if you can. Service: prompt, friendly (greeted me with a huge smile and was very helpful) Seating: approx 10-15 people, indoors only, and not a good place for large groups. Keep it intimate, or just order for your friends. Menu: good sized menu, but let's face it...I was there for the lobster roll. Aaaand here we go. The lobster roll comes either warm (highly suggested) with delicious butter OR cold (without delicious butter). Your choice; I chose warm. The lobster was fresh, delicious and was a good sized helping. The bun (I think was a hot dog bun) I was not a fan of. Here's my two cents...pretzel bun toasted on the grill with a little butter OR a soft, not so dry, bun of some sort. Nothing worse than a delicious meat wrapped in a NOT so delicious bread. So, I literally would have given this review 5 stars, but the bun was...just okay. 20 dollars for a hot lobster roll and chips it seems a little pricey. Lobster roll is hot and buttery and filled to the brim with lobster meat. If you went to red lobster like I did, you're going to say, "hey this doesn't taste as buttery" well yes they tend to put less butter on the lobster. My wife and I had time for exactly one lunch-time meal in Boston as we started a road trip and decided that a lobster roll was the way to go. After an embarrassingly comprehensive google search, we picked Pauli's for it's combination of purported quality, affordability, and quick turnaround time. The place is tiny with just a handful of tables for dine-in seating. The menu boasts an impressive selection of salads, sandwiches, wraps, and sides. We ordered two 7 oz lobster rolls, one traditional (i.e., cold) and one hot, which came with a bag of chips (highly recommend the sea salt and black pepper kettle-cooked ones) each and set us back about $40. While that is by no means a trivial amount, it was actually among the cheaper ones we were able to find (most were around ~$23-25 a pop). Therein lies the fatal flaw of the lobster roll: they taste so good but cost a small fortune, disappear in a few bites, and leave you less than satiated. Each roll came with a relatively large heap of lobster meat stuffed into a slit hot dog bun. The cold version was excellent, with the sweetness of the seafood shining through, and the mayo adding richness without becoming overwhelming. To no one's surprise, smothering an already luxurious ingredient in butter and toasting the bun only makes things better. The warm roll was the winner with a slightly spongier texture to the lobster flesh and the bread as a delicious treat by itself. I think locals and tourists alike can probably agree that Pauli's makes a pretty wicked lobsta roll. read more

I had the classic cold lobster roll and clam chowder, which were $17.99 and $7.99 respectively. The lobster roll came with bag of chips too. The hot dog bun was toast with a bit of butter/oil, which tasted good. To me, no need for extra $2 for the butter toasted roll. The food came in a hot dog paper paper tray with a plastic clam shell for dine in and the clam chowder came in a disposable lidded paper bowl with plastic wrap outside.
