They have a decent selection of beers on tap, but they also have a whole wall of fridges full of canned beers that I haven't even experienced yet. They have a lot of local fare, which I love. We also ordered these fried blocks of cheese and yucca flour (with pepper jam on the side) and it was amazing. It's basically a mozzarella stick (but I liked it so much more). I had zero expectations coming here. This place was chosen by a lunch group I go out with every now and then and I just tagged along. I have been to Brazilian steak houses before, but since I had checked Yelp (what else? lol) before I went, I knew that that's a whole different beast all together. Hey, I can deal with acai bowls and empanadas! When I arrived, I remembered, that I had been here before. The place was called Rumbo al Sur and I remember that I enjoyed the food, but it didn't wow me back then. It was similar with Paulista... The place itself is really nice and open, a cafeteria-style setting. It was easy to push together a few tables for a larger group, you bus your own table, all good. Actually, I saw quite a few people with their laptops, so working here is also an option. The lady behind the counter was very sweet and helpful, helping me to pronounce "feijoada" ;-) The server who brought the food to the table was sweet as well, very good experience here. I loved the taste of the empanadas... Romeo and Juliet were my favorites. The entree was OK, but a bit bland and the stew was lacking meat. When I think of Brazil, I imagine a bit more "kick". But I have never been there, so I wouldn't know what authentic Brazilian cuisine is, if it bit me in the ass! What I DO know though is that the food is overpriced. And that is due to a) the location and b) the portion sizes. Yes, Glen View is a bit more upscale than other parts of Oakland, but it is still Oakland and not Manhattan... or The Mission for that. Well, you can't do anything about the location at this point, but definitely about the prices and the portions. To recap: In a cafeteria-style self-service restaurant, I had two quarter-sized empanadas, a can of soda, and the feijoada - a cup of bean stew, a cup of rice, a tablespoon of collard greens, some farofa-powder. Additionally, the employees and manager did not know what the ingredients in their dishes were, and needed heavy prompting to find the packaging labels to find out. My partner has a dairy allergy and is currently throwing up after being assured that the sandwich he ordered had no dairy. Service: Fair to poor Food: Presentation was the best part of the meal. The Mango Toast, a single piece of toast slapped with a mixed cheese spread, had barely ripe mango so it was sour and crunchy, instead of a sweet and silky blend of mango and cheese on toast. The Romeo & Juliet empanada had too little cheese to balance the sweet of the jam and the heavy pastry. The chai tea latte came from a mix and was way too sweet for a drink with "no sugar". In general, no thought had been given to the way the flavors are supposed to blend. I thought from all the 4 & 5 star reviews that the place would be decent. You walk in and order at the counter. I had an açai bowl and a few bites of a friend's pao de quejo. My large acai bowl was $10, definitely a fair price. My problem is that the bowl was icey. They definitely pre-make the mix and let it sit in a freezer all day, so maybe it's better if you come earlier? Similar issue with the pao de quejo. It just kinda tasted like it had been sitting there a while. Neither item was terrible, but could have been good if they were a bit fresher. Came here on a Friday night with a few friends. Paulista's was warm and welcoming! We each ordered different drinks from the taproom and some bites to share. I had a few glasses of the Brut Cava which reminds me that I really need to get some taller flutes because bubbles just taste better in those glasses! We ordered the: -- Pastel de pizza - sort of like a puff pastry with cheeze and spices that you dip in a yummy green sauce -- Iscas - small deep fried chicken strips (I like the size of these because the ratio of sauce to chicken is optimized) --Bobo de Camarao - his grandmother's recipe. I've never had this before and it was delicious. It's like a thick stew / sauce that you have with rice. --Carne com fritas - fries with steak and cheese. I would get all of these again! Rating as a coffee shop vs food, but this place is clearly popular and is a great place to get brunch + hang out, strollers and all. I came to study/work here with headphones on and the staff pretty much left me alone. Perfect. Coffee - Got a latte and they have oat milk. Oat milk is $1, which is mehhh as compared to other places, but knew I was going to camp out for a while, so sucked up the cost. This place was relatively empty in the morning at 9am, but then had two waves of crowds around 11:30am and 12:30pm. There's a TON of space with high tops and normal tables -- perfect for studying or socializing. There were also outlets sprinkled throughout the cafe. My computer was fully charged, so didn't need an outlet, but definitely a nice option. I also work best in tiny, sunny nooks (random, I know), but they had several tables where I wouldn't be in the way of everyone else. Wifi is available and posted on the walls, although one of the servers/owners was nice enough to tell me when I didn't see the password posted in front of my face. Abysmal service, small portions, complex flavors. I will not be returning and cannot recommend Paulista. My friends and I were a group of 6 and came here for lunch after a meetup hike. We waited for about 20 minutes for the line to die down and got in line. The young man taking our order split our group into several numbers but he knew we were all together and our table was associated with #31. I asked him to recommend the most filling option on the menu as I eat more than the average person. His first recommendation was a salad. People always underestimate how much I eat because I'm petite. I ordered the Bobó de Camarão after verifying with him that it was a large portion and was still hungry. If I'm spending $20 on lunch, I need to leave the restaurant full. The flavors were delicious and complex. I'm an excellent cook and appreciate quality when I taste it. I particularly enjoyed the collard greens. We shared the Pão de Queijo, which was also on point. There were no utensils at our table so J fetched us utensils. Food for two people took significantly longer than the rest of the group. J and I ordered the same dish. She ordered before I did and my food arrived forty minutes before hers. She spoke to multiple people to inquire about the wait. The servers did not apologize for keeping her waiting and did not update us on the status of the food. We had to ask. When we left, I spoke to the woman working the register who told me the kitchen was backed up and finally apologized. I understand there will be a wait when the kitchen is busy, however, to keep us waiting for so long without acknowledging the frustration and empathizing with customers is unacceptable, especially for counter service. read more

Really filling, and the flavors are on point. I was a little iffy about the chicken empanada bcuz of the color AND when I cut into it, but it wasn't too bad. The flavor was good, but the chicken was a bit dry. The curry shrimp was just "ok" for me. It needed a little umph to make it hit the spot. I'm not sure what that is lol, but it was missing something. It says spicy but it wasn't spicy at all. I added hot sauce and it made it a little better. I must say I do love the space. Lots of people are already making it their go-to spot for studying or meetings. I love the fact that there's no rush to get you out the door. One of the owners was there today, and you have to respect the hustle and drive it takes to open such a cool spot. Service was great and that's one of the main reasons I'll be back. I went to Paulista with my family on a Saturday. As I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, therefore, being myself a Paulista, I had great expectations. The restaurant is in a beautiful neighborhood. The building is beautifully situated in a corner. When I entered the restaurant, the first impressions were far away from my expectations. There is little to no decoration at all. You face a single line to a cashier where you are supposed to order from a concise menu, with just a few options. The person who was taking orders didn't understand a word in Portuguese, the Brazilian language. Which makes things a bit more complicated as dishes were described in Portuguese. There was also a bit of options like muffins and other breakfast stuff not related to Brazilian culture. We understand that could be necessary to keep the ball rolling after the pandemic, but as a Brazilian restaurant, it was a mischaracterization. We ordered two feijoadas, one bobo de camarao and a salad. We also ordered empanadas, which do not exist in Brazil. The empanadas there were a Frankenstein, a mix of an Argentinean empanada with a Brazilian pastel. Food was not bad, but far from being impressive. The only Brazilian beverage available was Guarana. On the menu, the caipirinha, a typical Brazilian alcoholic drink, was said to be prepared with rum. What is an unforgivable mistake. At the end, maybe my expectations were too high. Incredible place! I came in for lunch after my undergraduate graduation ceremony from UC Berkeley. As you can imagine, everywhere was going to be crazy busy. However, Paulista was able to take me and my huge family and attend to us with perfect service. They have a really great selection of tap beer, but I got a custom made caipirinha! The food was DELICIOUS. Seriously. Everything was amazing. I had a little bite of everything that my family ordered. The empanadas, the toast, the sandwiches, and the main courses were all so d*mn good. I ordered the vegetarian feijoada and I was not disappointed! Also, the space there is incredible. I've been coming here for years since they opened. I got takeout yesterday and decided to once again give the Floripa chicken sandwich a try, along with two Romeo and Juliet pastries. I have never had a sandwich that so lacked and seasoning in my life!! I was dying for some salt, and it was unfortunate because I was eating the sandwich in my car on the fly because I was starving. Also, the chicken was thick on o oh one side, most of the sandwich was breading!! I took the pastries home to have with some milk, and the pastry was stretchy and doughy instead of flaky. The filling was fine, but encased in that kind of dough spoiled it for me. I ate the filling and threw the dough away. What a waste! I don't know if I'm ever gonna get more food here, and that makes me sad as a Brazilian woman. I really want to support this business, but I don't think they're gonna hurt if I don't buy their stuff, they're busy enough every time I pass by. This was out first visit to this restaurant, prompted by a desire for a trivia night. Great selection of beers, pleasant (counter) service. The trivia was fun. Food was not so good. We're vegetarians so we were limited in what we could order since it's a meat-forward menu. The veg empanadas were not great-- they tasted like spanakopita. The yuca fries were stiff and tasteless. We came here after a morning hike. Parking was street only but wasn't too difficult to find. Right now, the inside is very spacious with all the tables spread apart and lots of windows and the doors open with lots of air flow. They have a tiny patio area with maybe four two person tables. I ordered a large recife acai bowl (it has mango). My bf had the feijoada, which is a black bean stew with a bunch of different meats. It's served with rice, collard greens and pico de guillo and also farofa, which is like corn meal. We had to google it but you can dip your meat in it, mix it with the stew or on its own. While it was filling, I don't think my bf enjoyed it very much. After re-looking at the menu, seemed he would've liked the steak sandwich. We also got to try the ham and mozerella empanada. It was served warm and was pretty tasty. I really enjoyed my acai bowl. Besides mango, it had bananas, coconut and granola. The acai was a part creamy and part icy. It didn't melt quickly, which was good since I'm a slow eater. And it had great flavor. The mango was chopped really tiny and I think I would've enjoyed it slightly chunkier. Love the beers they have on tap! Always changing, but always tasty! This was the first time we ordered food. It did not disappoint! Really fresh ingredients and great customer service. I had the Abocate burger (a special. I ordered mine with no bun b/c I need to eat low carb/keto) and my fiancé had the bobó de camarão (a shrimp chowder served with jasmine rice). Both were delicious! Really great salads. Grass fed beef was really tasty. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. This was a welcome relief after a bad experience at another restaurant that told us a happy hour that was listed till 7 was now only until 6 and they would not honor it even though the website and signs out front said 7. With moving job locations and getting new hours, comes finding new after work hang out spots. Pair that with hunting down a beer that people have been raving about and you got me avoiding traffic sitting at the bar at Paulista. The beer I had been hawking made it to the tap after being on deck for a few days. With that and a slightly hectic day at work, it was kismet. With parking in the back, I got out of my car and smelled yumminess. Always a good sign. I sat down at the bar and was greeted by one of the employees that schooled me on their tasters and happy hour. I opted for a three beer flight of 5 ounces each. Delayed gratification right? Everyone was right, the Triple Haole Punch was awesome. Evie the bartender was super cool to talk to and agreed with me on the Punch. While tasting, I overheard the owner Alex's story of growing up in Brazil and moving to Japan when he was 19. While in Japan he learned Brazilian cooking. He came over and introduced himself. I took the opportunity to ask some of his favorite dishes. I only tried one, so return trips will be necessary. I had the coxinhas which were $9 - according to Alex, they're the famous street food of Brazil. Usually bigger there but this is a 4 piece appetizer. They were really good, but I wish there were more or available at a HH price. The dishes to try are: Feijoadas is a slow cooked black bean stew. Comes with meat $15 or without $14. What a blast we had tonight finally able to come on a Tuesday. My favorites to eat are tasty empanadas and acai bowls. I know their cheese balls are gooey delicious! We have been here a handful of times and what i can say is the staff young man who no longer has long hair has always greeted us and assisted us with a friendly smile! There are tasty ice cream as well as a solid selection of beer and alcohol tap. There are plenty of street parking nearby but I do recommend parking on main road well lit area as seeing broken glasses on the ground at various darker street may suggest random break ins. I would naturally say, "I like this little coffee shop" (you know we always have to call something little when it's cute lol) however calling Paulista "little" would do it no justice - it is quite spacious! One of the biggest coffee shops I've visited, yet not too overwhelming and still possesses an intimate feel. Not too crowded during my afternoon visit and great music (latin, soul, and even jazz tunes in the music mix) contributes to the chill atmosphere. The menu definitely lives up to it's Brazilian kitchen description with a variety of menu items listed in Portuguese (don't worry, a detailed English description accompanies each menu offering). Total Latin American vibe and looking at the menu just made me want to book a flight back to Brazil, as I just visited the country for the first time 6 months ago! Several tropical fruit selections such as the Romeo & Juliet empanadas which was small but held a lot of flavor (guava & fresh cheese) as well as a Passion Fruit Mousse on the dessert menu. Speaking of dessert, I was surprised that Paulista serves Mr. Dewie's Creamery Ice Cream too and any place that serves ice cream is ok with me! As you can see although Paulista gives you coffee shop vibes, it's more of a fully functional restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, wine & brew....because the beverages are just as important! My primary focus for today's visit was work, however, I am looking forward to returning soon to try more of the menu - I hear the Acai Bowl is delish! read more
