Paul's restaurant is a true old-school, neighborhood diner style restaurant. I came in on a Saturday morning around 9am and it was packed full. The service was friendly, but definitely slower. I was excited to see biscuits with mushroom gravy on the menu. The biscuits were buttery and there was a nice mushroom flavor to the gravy, however, the gravy was a lot thinner than I would've liked. Eat here!!!! Please!!! I just had breakfast with my son. Omg!!!! my son had biscuits and gravy, and I had the two egg breakfast with house potatoes and sausage with a biscuit. The potatoes are well seasoned delicious crispy and amazing. The eggs were perfectly seasoned perfect doneness so very impressed. There was a double star of my breakfast and that was the sausage and the biscuit. The food was just so so delicious and good. You will not be disappointed please come. I need to come and try everything on this menu. It is so amazing. The staff was kind considerate. Their customer service was so wonderful and phenomenal. I was very impressed that our server started calling my kid by his name by the end of our breakfast just so phenomenal customer service we will be back. The vibe was perfection! Don't believe the 3 star rating. This place is under new ownership and it is so good! Everything is made from scratch. I got the mushroom omelet with chimichurri and my husband got the corn beef hash. Both were super good. Kids got pancakes that were fluffy and slightly nutty. Our server, Lois, was so friendly and refreshed our coffee frequently. The cook went old school with the seasoning and left it up to us to salt our eggs and potatoes. Not a big deal, but I do prefer my food seasoned in the cooking process. The dining room looks like it came straight out of the 70's. We came to the Elbow Room a few nights ago (also great!) and the bartender told us that the owner went to a lot of trouble to have someone restore all of the leather tufted walls and bars. The wood chairs brought back a rush of nostalgia being the exact same ones I grew up with in the 80's. We will definitely be back! read more

I've been appreciative that someone saw fit to rescue a legendary Vancouver restaurant and bar. That said, the decision to remove the jukebox from the Elbow Room was probably a misstep. And, if you need to sell shirts, black and white with "Elbow Room" in a vintage font would be an improvement over what's on offer. Then there's the restaurant. I've eaten there six times since the change of ownership and only my last experience didn't really hit the mark. If you call a dish a "scramble" I'm thinking most people expect eggs on the plate. Eggs, less salmon and maybe replace the beets with something more conventional on the salmon scramble. Not all "creative" dishes are successful, and I think this one fits that category. read more

Met up here at the suggestion of a friend. I dug the old-school decor and vibes of the place. Service was very attentive and friendly. They also accommodated my request for a minor modification to a standard menu cocktail, which was great. The Reuben was downright phenomenal. It's the best one I've had in AGES and the fries were also excellent. The Elbow Room next door had a fantastic dim and dive-y (in the best way) atmosphere with antique beer signs and tufted wall panels. My wife and I noticed that Paul's restaurant had reopened with new owners. We decided we'd give it a try for breakfast. I'm glad we did. It's simple good clean food made from scratch. The waitress said everything is from scratch at the restaurant with a few exceptions which are sourced from local producers. I love, corn, beef, hash, I love a big greasy messy pile of corn beef hash. But I also love good clean simple food that is not greasy. That's how the corn beef hash at Paul's . No caned corned beef hash, it's the real thing and it was delicious. I had it with eggs over easy, they were cooked perfectly. My wife always ask if a restaurant makes their own biscuits, turns out they do a Paul's and they are delicious. I added one to my order and I am so glad I did. Oh, I almost forgot, I got the homemade peach cobbler to go. I'm a happy boy. My wife had something called the green goddess omelette. Sounds like a veggie sort of thing and not my style....Wait...she might read this...Of course I jest, I love to eat vegetables. She said it was delicious and even suggested I try a bite. I smiled politely, she's so cute. Prices seem on par with most other restaurants in the neighborhood, though I don't eat at them all. So that's a guess I guess. The food was very good and everything was clean. Weight staff was professional and really delightful. We now we have a new restaurant to add to our stable of favorites. They're new, give them a try. Paul's is at 1800 Broadway in the couve; corner of Broadway and McLaughlin. Right now the hours are 7 AM to 2 PM open for breakfast and lunch. What a find! This restaurant makes all their food from scratch and is very fresh. The coleslaw was unbelievable, the macaroni and cheese was delicious, I had fish and chips, and the batter was nice and crispy, and the homemade rosemary dressing on the salad was yummy and the Service .... Lois was excellent and I even met Paul! I highly recommend this restaurant. Next time I'm going back to get the meatloaf... Or maybe that turkey burger with goat cheese... Yum. read more

Got biscuits & gravy that they said would be ready in 10 mins or less, (30min later finally had my food) biscuits were rock hard and dry, "country" sausage gravy has vegetables in it and not disclosed (disgusting) and eggs taste like rubber. 1/10 do not recommend. Paul's is as historic as it gets. With its original decor and retro atmosphere, it's like stepping back in time. We oftentimes opt for eating at the bar so we can have that up close and personal experience with the staff. The food at Paul's runs the gamut from traditional breakfast selections, to fabulous lunch and early dinner offerings. We usually come in for breakfast and the eggs, pancakes, sausage, and hashbrowns are cooked just the way we like. We bring our parents here as well and they love the place since they have also been patrons for many years. Overall, it's an experience and we love eating at Paul's. read more

Great "throw back" restaurant, just like the small town diners I grew up with. Good food and good people.

Decent diner with large portions and affordable prices. Stopped in on a Sunday morning around 9. Since it's located in downtown Vancouver, there is only street parking available. There are quite a few 2-hour spots on both street sides of the restaurant. When we walked in, it wasn't too busy; there was plenty of open booth seating as well as up at the counter. A sign said 'wait to be seated', so we waited...and waited...and waited. Took forever to get seated. Once seated, our server was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean and definitely had that diner vibe. We ended up ordering the ham and cheese omelet with hashbrowns and rye toast ($13.25), the biscuit special ($10.50), and a black coffee ($2.75). The omelet was very good; tons of yummy ham and cheddar cheese. The hashbrowns were okay; a little too greasy for my liking. My husband thought the biscuits and gravy were just okay as well. He said he wouldn't order it again. The omelets are where it's at; stuffed full of yummy ingredients, and the portions were big enough for us to share. The tap water didn't taste good here either! Need to ask for a lemon wedge next time. Overall, it was a good first experience. We visited based on a recommendation from a family member. We may return in the future, but there are so many other options in the area. read more

I went back for the shrimp and grits. The sauce and shrimp were so underwhelming. The sauce was very thin and practice flavorless. I'm not sure why consistency is a problem. I also decided to try some of their homemade pie. The peach cobbler was not very good at all. Paul and his wife, both hailing from Chicago's professional culinary world have brought something special to downtown Vancouver. Corned Beef Hash that will knock your socks off, chicken fried steak that is so well cooked it just might make you cry, and, seriously the best chorizo breakfast burrito I've seen since leaving Tucson, AZ ....so good my kid didn't share. Paul's staff is the best around. Lois was our server, she went out of her way to take good care of us while dining AND made my son's 18th birthday super special by asking Wyatt, Paul's resident baker, to make us a whole Dutch Apple Pie for his party. As someone who lived in LA and loved dining at the new owners' other restaurants, I was thrilled to hear they opened Paul's and couldn't wait to visit. Our experience did not disappoint--the ambiance, service, and food were all wonderful! From the moment we stepped in to the restaurant, everyone we interacted with was very sweet and attentive. My group ordered the green goddess omelet, huevos rancheros, egg plate, fried egg sandwich, and french toast to share. I meant to take a photo but forgot because we ate everything so quickly. We had such a great night at the reopened Paul's. This place made food that was absolutely delicious- my kids ate everything. Service was awesome- Thank you Kaylen. Huge entrees with great sides. Offered refills on sodas. My husband ordered a great cocktail from the bar. The desserts are fantastic- all homemade, huge slices of cake and homemade pie. The bill was a bit higher but that just seems like that's true everywhere now and the food really delivered at the price. We will certainly be back. Always past by this place and have been curious. It's like stepping into a world that existed decades ago but still felt homey. You can tell that this place has regulars and are well taken care of. Anything on menu is served all day. We went for breakfast although I had a BLT. The potato salad was not homemade which was slightly disappointing. The biscuits and gravy was well portioned for the price but it was lacking. Our waitress sat us, took our order and delivered the food but then left. Had to flag down another waitress for a to go box and stood up at the cashier to pay. Overall curiosity is satisfied and it's nice to see local places that have a regular clientele. I dropped my car off for service at Stevens Auto downtown and my sister picked me up. Deciding where to go for breakfast, she suggested Paul's. Both being natives of Vancouver, we thought we'd try it. Wow-what a pleasant surprise! Our waitress (Lois) was wonderful! She informed us everything is fresh, cure their own meat etc. I struggled with choosing between 2 different items. Lois made it fun, she had me pick a number between 1-10. This is an old fashioned diner where you walk into a charming time warp. We have gone twice since the new owners took over, and loved it both times. Clam chowder, chili, BLT, and fish and chips have all been very good. Yummy basic comfort food with a few twists (pickled pepper accent in the chili, peppers added to BLT). I was not a fan of the carrot cake (too much frosting for me), but I look forward to trying some pie. Our servers have been very personable. Been going to Paul's for three years. Enjoyed past specialties of the previous owner. Looking forward to the new management's ideas. I really hate to say this (honestly, I do), but it is clear there is a new owner in charge. The waitress was taking our order, and she saw a friend come in and she waved at them and then disappeared, walked away without finishing with us. I had to track her down to complete my order. My cranberry juice arrived, and it was so very watered down, I could not be sure what flavor it was. I ordered oatmeal with fruit. 5 blueberries added for $2.00. My side order of sourdough toast arrived, hard and cold with butter on the side. My husband's Noah's Arc entre arrived with 2 slices of greasy limp cold bacon when he had ordered Sausage. His pancakes had powder sugar on them???? We are diabetics, man?? The total bill was over $50 which I can no longer justify that kind of price for what we received. $4.50 for cup of coffee!!! ??? And the new owners really haven't changed the decor of the place, didn't even clean the carpets? Yuk! They did put more lights in the bathroom. NOTHING ELSE but more lights. Disgusting. Folks I just cannot accept all of the mediocre service and foods served up these days for premium prices. Being retired means getting your monies worth. That will not happen at PAUL's of Vancouver. The staff talked up the changes but after what we received today, I don't think i am willing to spend more money to be disappointed again. Sometimes, you only get one chance to impress the locals, the repeats, the backbone of community support. I so looked forward to a homey place for daily breakfast and lunches. Vintage diner! Feels like the 1980s here. Kind of blissful in its uncelebrated vintageness. Food is good ole American diner style. If you want just simple American style fare, this is it! I love it for those qualities. I got a pork chop that was nicely prepared. I'd get a baked potato or fries next time. The soup was nicely prepared and house made. Try to get in for breakfast or lunch, as they close at 4:00pm. I made it just in time, and closed the place down! Yet... Next door is the Elbow Room. A classic extension of Paul's with a retro feel. I've only read that the drinks are really sturdy here! The bar menu is limited to a few bar menu type items. I will definitely return for a stiff cocktail after a late lunch at Paul's! read more

My wife and I were loyal customers of the Old Paul's Restaurant. We were excited to try the New Paul's. We went twice the first week they opened.....Both were bad experiences. Here is what we tried. The BLT, Ruben, Fish & Chips, and Tomato Soup. The Ruben's Corned Beef was too thick and tough....the sauerkraut way too juicy causing the bread to be soggy. The French Fries at every meal were limp, cold and flavorless. The only thing we found good was the salad. We went back yesterday hoping they had improved. What a delightful discovery right in my back yard! My boyfriend and I realized recently that downtown Vancouver is very easy to get to via transit from Kenton where we live. You just hop on the max yellow line to Delta Park and then take the 60 bus across the interstate bridge, super easy. We were looking up classic diners because they are increasingly harder to find when we stumbled on Paul's. This place took me back to when my Great Grandma would order burnt toast and smoke cigarettes with black coffee while I had breakfast at the diner with a big mug of hot chocolate with whipped cream. What I'm trying to say is that it's absolutely nostalgic in all the best ways. Super clean decor, big comfy booths, seating at the bar. Speaking of bar there's a little dive bar in the back called the Elbow Room. How perfect is that? The service was so warm and endearing, and our portions were HUGE and filling. Great bang for the buck and tasty. They make their biscuits in house, their salad dressings in house and their soups. We will DEFINITELY be back to Paul's, and you should go check it out too.
