Paul's restaurant is a true old-school, neighborhood diner style restaurant. I came in on a Saturday morning around 9am and it was packed full. The service was friendly, but definitely slower. I was excited to see biscuits with mushroom gravy on the menu. The biscuits were buttery and there was a nice mushroom flavor to the gravy, however, the gravy was a lot thinner than I would've liked. My boyfriend got the green goddess omelette, which was on the smaller side. The house potatoes were just ok and nothing special. read more

Eat here!!!! Please!!! I just had breakfast with my son. Omg!!!! my son had biscuits and gravy, and I had the two egg breakfast with house potatoes and sausage with a biscuit. The potatoes are well seasoned delicious crispy and amazing. The eggs were perfectly seasoned perfect doneness so very impressed. There was a double star of my breakfast and that was the sausage and the biscuit. The food was just so so delicious and good. You will not be disappointed please come. I need to come and try everything on this menu. It is so amazing. The staff was kind considerate. Their customer service was so wonderful and phenomenal. I was very impressed that our server started calling my kid by his name by the end of our breakfast just so phenomenal customer service we will be back. The vibe was perfection! Don't believe the 3 star rating. This place is under new ownership and it is so good! Everything is made from scratch. I got the mushroom omelet with chimichurri and my husband got the corn beef hash. Both were super good. Kids got pancakes that were fluffy and slightly nutty. Our server, Lois, was so friendly and refreshed our coffee frequently. The cook went old school with the seasoning and left it up to us to salt our eggs and potatoes. Not a big deal, but I do prefer my food seasoned in the cooking process. The dining room looks like it came straight out of the 70's. We came to the Elbow Room a few nights ago (also great!) and the bartender told us that the owner went to a lot of trouble to have someone restore all of the leather tufted walls and bars. The wood chairs brought back a rush of nostalgia being the exact same ones I grew up with in the 80's. We will definitely be back! read more

Met up here at the suggestion of a friend. I dug the old-school decor and vibes of the place. Service was very attentive and friendly. They also accommodated my request for a minor modification to a standard menu cocktail, which was great. The Reuben was downright phenomenal. It's the best one I've had in AGES and the fries were also excellent. The Elbow Room next door had a fantastic dim and dive-y (in the best way) atmosphere with antique beer signs and tufted wall panels. I've been appreciative that someone saw fit to rescue a legendary Vancouver restaurant and bar. That said, the decision to remove the jukebox from the Elbow Room was probably a misstep. And, if you need to sell shirts, black and white with "Elbow Room" in a vintage font would be an improvement over what's on offer. Then there's the restaurant. I've eaten there six times since the change of ownership and only my last experience didn't really hit the mark. If you call a dish a "scramble" I'm thinking most people expect eggs on the plate. Eggs, less salmon and maybe replace the beets with something more conventional on the salmon scramble. Not all "creative" dishes are successful, and I think this one fits that category. read more

What a find! This restaurant makes all their food from scratch and is very fresh. The coleslaw was unbelievable, the macaroni and cheese was delicious, I had fish and chips, and the batter was nice and crispy, and the homemade rosemary dressing on the salad was yummy and the Service .... Lois was excellent and I even met Paul! I highly recommend this restaurant. Next time I'm going back to get the meatloaf... Or maybe that turkey burger with goat cheese... Yum. read more

The food was not good. Ordered a Bloody Maria and found they put horseradish in it. I could not drink it. My friend's eggs were overcooked, though mine, also over medium, were good. The biscuits were hard tack but the sausage gravy was delicious. I ordered Pork Butt with my eggs and I had to winkle out the tiny bits of actual meat from the fat with my knife. The fried/smothered/hash brown? potatoes were burned on top. We will not go there again. Paul's is as historic as it gets. With its original decor and retro atmosphere, it's like stepping back in time. We oftentimes opt for eating at the bar so we can have that up close and personal experience with the staff. The food at Paul's runs the gamut from traditional breakfast selections, to fabulous lunch and early dinner offerings. We usually come in for breakfast and the eggs, pancakes, sausage, and hashbrowns are cooked just the way we like. We bring our parents here as well and they love the place since they have also been patrons for many years. Overall, it's an experience and we love eating at Paul's. read more

Decent diner with large portions and affordable prices. Stopped in on a Sunday morning around 9. Since it's located in downtown Vancouver, there is only street parking available. There are quite a few 2-hour spots on both street sides of the restaurant. When we walked in, it wasn't too busy; there was plenty of open booth seating as well as up at the counter. A sign said 'wait to be seated', so we waited...and waited...and waited. Took forever to get seated. Once seated, our server was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean and definitely had that diner vibe. We ended up ordering the ham and cheese omelet with hashbrowns and rye toast ($13.25), the biscuit special ($10.50), and a black coffee ($2.75). The omelet was very good; tons of yummy ham and cheddar cheese. The hashbrowns were okay; a little too greasy for my liking. My husband thought the biscuits and gravy were just okay as well. He said he wouldn't order it again. The omelets are where it's at; stuffed full of yummy ingredients, and the portions were big enough for us to share. The tap water didn't taste good here either! Need to ask for a lemon wedge next time. Overall, it was a good first experience. We visited based on a recommendation from a family member. We may return in the future, but there are so many other options in the area. read more

I also decided to try some of their homemade pie. The peach cobbler was not very good at all. Breakfast has the ability to transform, ask Quentin Tarantino. A comfy booth , hot, fresh coffee, and great service goes a long way to soothe one's soul. Paul and his wife, both hailing from Chicago's professional culinary world have brought something special to downtown Vancouver. Corned Beef Hash that will knock your socks off, chicken fried steak that is so well cooked it just might make you cry, and, seriously the best chorizo breakfast burrito I've seen since leaving Tucson, AZ ....so good my kid didn't share. Paul's staff is the best around. Lois was our server, she went out of her way to take good care of us while dining AND made my son's 18th birthday super special by asking Wyatt, Paul's resident baker, to make us a whole Dutch Apple Pie for his party. I don't have words for how good the pie tasted, so I will defer to the kid: **** "Mom, this is the best birthday dessert I've ever had". Always past by this place and have been curious. It's like stepping into a world that existed decades ago but still felt homey. You can tell that this place has regulars and are well taken care of. Anything on menu is served all day. We went for breakfast although I had a BLT. The potato salad was not homemade which was slightly disappointing. The biscuits and gravy was well portioned for the price but it was lacking. Our waitress sat us, took our order and delivered the food but then left. Had to flag down another waitress for a to go box and stood up at the cashier to pay. Overall curiosity is satisfied and it's nice to see local places that have a regular clientele. As someone who lived in LA and loved dining at the new owners' other restaurants, I was thrilled to hear they opened Paul's and couldn't wait to visit. Our experience did not disappoint--the ambiance, service, and food were all wonderful! From the moment we stepped in to the restaurant, everyone we interacted with was very sweet and attentive. My group ordered the green goddess omelet, huevos rancheros, egg plate, fried egg sandwich, and french toast to share. I meant to take a photo but forgot because we ate everything so quickly. We had such a great night at the reopened Paul's. This place made food that was absolutely delicious- my kids ate everything. Service was awesome- Thank you Kaylen. Huge entrees with great sides. Offered refills on sodas. My husband ordered a great cocktail from the bar. The desserts are fantastic- all homemade, huge slices of cake and homemade pie. The bill was a bit higher but that just seems like that's true everywhere now and the food really delivered at the price. We will certainly be back. I dropped my car off for service at Stevens Auto downtown and my sister picked me up. Deciding where to go for breakfast, she suggested Paul's. Both being natives of Vancouver, we thought we'd try it. Wow-what a pleasant surprise! Our waitress (Lois) was wonderful! She informed us everything is fresh, cure their own meat etc. I struggled with choosing between 2 different items. Lois made it fun, she had me pick a number between 1-10. This is an old fashioned diner where you walk into a charming time warp. We have gone twice since the new owners took over, and loved it both times. Clam chowder, chili, BLT, and fish and chips have all been very good. Yummy basic comfort food with a few twists (pickled pepper accent in the chili, peppers added to BLT). I was not a fan of the carrot cake (too much frosting for me), but I look forward to trying some pie. Our servers have been very personable.
