The gentleman that works in the place who has been there for years has a really bad vibe. Whenever I've asked him for something he seems irritated that I've even asked. Recently I went in and asked for my pupillary distance from my last exam and eye glass order and he refused to give it to me. He lied and said PD is based on the frames. PD has nothing to do with the frames. It's an eye measurement. He seemed annoyed to even provide me with a record of my eye exam from last year. I will never go here again. They have nice frames, but it's a weird and awkward vibe in the place. Heights vision is right around the corner and the staff is much more hospitable. I have been to this practice twice before. The last time was 2021. I made an appt online for a comprehensive contact lens appointment. I received two confirmation emails, a reminder text message, a reminder voicemail, and one reminder call which I answered. In none of those - did anyone say that the practice policy is they do not offer standalone eye exams, you MUST buy glasses or contacts from them. I've never experienced a place where this is required, INCLUDING THIS PRACTICE. Until now. When I arrived, Lydia informed me of this, after I politely declined her reading me my eye insurance benefits. I explained that wasn't in any of their communication to me, and she said that wasn't her fault, but this is the policy now. She told me three times that the old eye doctor died, so of course policies change (not that they shared that change with me, a prior patient). She made zero effort to empathize or reflect on how rude and inconvenient it is to require an additional purchase in order to see the Optometrist. They have almost no selection for glasses, Lydia is a miserable salesperson and I had no interest in working with her on purchasing anything. I asked to speak to an eye doctor or practice manager. Nobody is available. As others have said, go to Cohen's. It's less than a block away, they take walk ins and they are lovely. read more

This place is a waste of space. They don't know how to use their online platforms and refuse to service vaccinated customers for eye exams or renew prior prescriptions for stable eye impairment. They should've canceled my appointment and taken the initiative to reach out and offer other places for me to get an exam. They're unhelpful and have no sense of how to run their business. I had great experience the first time I went but I won't be coming back and neither will any of my patients, friends, or family. As a physician who fought COVID, I feel compelled to say that to deny an essential service without doing it responsibly and with respect to customers is a deep shame. read more

This review is for Dr. Mark Steinman only. Reviewing an optometry store is an impossible task -- you really need two Yelp entries: one for the store itself, and the other for the optometrist. If you spend more than a minute looking at the reviews for Pearle Vision, you'll see two types of reviews: * Five star reviews for Dr. Mark Steinman for stellar eye exams. * One and two star reviews for the store's customer service. I did not get glasses here and didn't have to deal with the two women who worked at the store friend. They seemed friendly enough, but Yelp is pretty much in agreement they're not great to work with. On the other hand, this store has been here since at least 2006 when I used to live here, so they're doing something right. However, I will say that Dr. Mark Steinman is one of the best optometrists I've ever been to. He is old school: he will spend a lot of time physically looking at your eyes looking at blood vessel density and other markers for poor vision or eye health. His exam was thorough, and he himself is an angel of a man. Funny, witty, tolerant, friendly, outgoing. There is literally nothing to not like about this man, either personally or as a doctor. I wouldn't come back here only because of the person who helped me today. The women is lovely and the other man with his Godzilla collection were great today there was someone new. I paid a very steep price for my lenses and I asked if he could tighten my frame and he said "it's your risk. If I break them it's not my problem." If I could give this place negative every star in the sky, I would. Sit down, this is going to take a while. Last summer, my eyes started to become really dry and I noticed my vision had worsened... time for a trip to the eye doctor! At the time I was working blocks away, and figured that I was very happy with my experience at the Pearle Vision I had been using for quite some time near my parents' place in New Jersey. Little did I know... little did I know... Well, I'll get the positives out of the way first. The optician, ophthalmologist, or whatever her title is, was a very nice lady. I could only really say nice things about her. She helped get my dry eyes under control and assisted me in obviously finding out what my new prescription was but also picking a brand of contacts suitable for me. Now we get to the worst story of customer service of all time. The backstory is that the previous summer I bought a nice pair of Prada frames for the Pearle Vision I spoke of earlier. They cost a pretty penny, but I figured that I would go a little more frugal when it came to getting the actual lenses. So at the time, I purchased no frills lenses, no special glare protection, no special extra tough scratch protection, just some basic lenses. Now back to my experience at this Pearle. Since my prescription had changed, I needed to replace the lenses especially since part of my dry eye recovery regime required me to wear them more often. I told the employee I want the same exact kind of lenses that were in the frames, nothing special, no special coating that will prevent heart disease or cancer or whatever. He takes a look at them and tells me, "Okay, I will give you the same kind you have." He takes my glasses, and rings me up. "$323." My jaw hit the floor. I don't even think my lenses PLUS the frames cost that much the previous summer. At this point I am like, "HOLD UP." I tell him to show me the bill and I grab both it and some lens brochure that talks about every stupid thing in the world you can have done to your lenses, and sure enough he was trying to charge me for all of them. I actually pay for the lens at the time, which in hindsight was silly to begin with, but I tell the guy, "I don't want you to TOUCH those glasses and put in any frames until I come back tomorrow." Between that visit and the next one, I speak to the very kind people at the NJ Pearle Vision and they agree to fax over my bill from my last visit and sure enough I ordered the most basic lenses for somewhere around $79. Yeah... the Pearle on Montague was trying to charge me over $200 more than what I should be paying. So I go back the next day with both originals and photocopies (because I knew I couldn't trust the staff as far as I could throw them). I ask to speak to the manager, and the guy I speak to says that he is the assistant manager and the manager wasn't in. I tell him that I came in the previous day to previous my lenses with the the same exact type I had except with the new prescription and that his employee tried to rip me off. He says that there must be some sort of misunderstanding and he takes a look at the lenses to see if they are what I claim them to be. I then show him both the bill I received the previous day and the one from the summer before, and he is speechless. I tell him that I want my money back from the previous day, I want my glasses back, and I want to speak to the manager. He refunds my money and then has the audacity to ask if I wanted the lenses I wanted for the $79 before giving me back the glasses with the original lenses in them. Are you kidding me? Not only should I be getting them for free but at this point he should be giving me an extra pair. During the whole refund process he attempts to keep all the paperwork except for the receipt for the refund, I just wanted to see how ridiculous he would be, and then I bust out the copies I had in my work bag and say, "Hmmm, actually, don't worry about it, looks like I already made myself some copies." He says the manager isn't in, she's away on vacation for a week, blah blah blah. I tell him I will be back in a week everyday until I can speak to the manager. I do come back several times, she's never there, I finally get to speak to her on the phone and she was of no use either. End of story, I go to the Pearle in NJ, they charge me what I would've been charged to begin with and were pretty appalled when I told them the story. (It would've been pretty 5 stars-ish for the NJ Pearle to give me some free lenses, but that didn't happen... can't really blame them though) read more

Had one of the single worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I went in to get an eye exam and buy a new pair of glasses. Everybody was really friendly and helpful (at first). The eye exam seemed thorough and professional. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable in helping me select my frames, etc. All was good. I gave them my insurance information and after all the insurance was accounted for paid them nearly $400 out-of-pocket for the balance that was not covered. My intention was to buy a pair of glasses from them and then get a copy of my prescription and order a spare pair online. When I asked them for a copy of my prescription and the interpupillary distance measurements that they took, I was given a copy of the prescription but they refused to give me the distance measurements, claiming that they are not legally required to provide the distance measurements. I don't know if this is true, but I find it hard to believe that they can measure something on my body, pay them for doing this and then they can withhold that information from me. It would be like my physician refusing to tell me my blood type. FYI: You need both the actual lens prescription and the interpupillary distance measurements in order to purchase glasses. Just the lens prescription by itself is useless. Once I asked for the distance measurements, her polite tone changed. She immediately said that she could cancel the order for the glasses, but I would still have to pay for the eye exam. An eye exam which was useless to me because they basically would not provide me with the results. Keep in mind, this was AFTER I paid them hundreds of dollars for a pair of glasses. It's not like I had them give me an exam and then said "thanks but I'm not going to buy my glasses from you." I guess they don't want to give the measurement out because they don't want you buying your glasses elsewhere, well that's exactly what I'm going to do from now on. They've lost a customer for life. P.S.: I've been wearing glasses for most of my life and for about the past ten years have been buying spare pairs online. This is the FIRST place that refused to provide me with the distance measurements. read more

I had a terrible experience here. The optometrist wasn't even nice. The office was so hot. She didn't even introduce herself. She had blond hair and eyeglasses. The staff was some what good. I beleive Jaime helped me she was a little rude tell me what to do. It was like this is the machine and "DO IT!" She told me in the exam area the retinal pictures would cost me $49.00 if I wanted the doctor to exam me to make sure my eyes were healthy. I asked her why is the exam costing $89.00 then? whats included in that price? she said "a prescription evaluation, but if I wanted the doctor to tell me my eyes are heathy and good I would have to pay $49.00 additionally for that service. Then they told me they are owned by Lenscrafters. I said UGH!!!!! I felt like another mis-representation of an eye doctors retail establishment, because the doctors are also employees of Lenscrafters. This was a very bad experience. read more

Dr. Steinman is really nice, so for that I would definitely recommend this location! I was past due for an eye exam and wanted new glasses so I made an appointment here. I was in and out in 1.5 hours (just because I am so indecisive with choosing frames), and my glasses came back within a couple of business days. I was actually on vacation when the frames arrived and wasn't able to pick up when they first called, so Dr. Steinman called back in a few days to make sure I got the message and confirmed that he could hold them for me until I returned. read more

There were strange vibes in here right off the bat but I was really overdue for an eye exam. This place is really old school which is fine, but it was a mess and generally felt unprofessional. In the exam room I noticed a literal cobweb on the coatrack when the optometrist asked if I wanted to hang my coat. Tools and technology felt outdated. When the exam was done I browsed a bit for frames but I didn't care for any of them and most of them are upwards of $300. I told the man at the front I was just going to take a copy of my prescription and pay for my exam. He sort of said ok and then I stood there waiting for awhile. Finally he was ready for me to checkout and said, for future reference we don't just do exams here you need to purchase glasses, I'll let it go this time but just so you know that's how it works here. This was obviously a lie and also extremely off putting. The customer service is horrendous here and the whole place feels ancient. My prescription was also incredibly incorrect and in fact I preferred to pay out of pocket for an exam elsewhere than to have to go back here for a re-exam. I wouldn't recommend this place to literally anyone ever and wish I had read the other reviews before scheduling with them. Waste of time. read more

This is a public service for anyone in need of glasses and is in the downtown area of Brooklyn. One avoid a shop that is across the street from 1 Metrotech. They tried to sell me glasses for $600. That was with all the upgrades and the pressure to put the glasses on layaway and pay it off on time which I said no and left with my prescription. Fast forward a few months I go to Pearle Vision 154 Montague Street. The nice lady behind the counter insurance and was told incorrectly that I was not eligible for glasses. She then said I should call my insurance company which I did and found in fact I was eligible for glasses. She said if my insurance was cleared I could get a good pair of glasses for about $75 after my insurance co-pay. So I go back to the store after speaking to my insurance company 1199 SEIU, she was not there so I left a copy of my prescription and copy of my insurance card and plan to come back tomorrow. Then something said to Google Cohen's Optical which I did would you believe it was across the street at 151 Montague Street just steps away. I go in they check my insurance, I find a pair of glasses that are completely covered. Before filling up my prescription for my glasses the gentleman behind the counter said he they wanted to check my eyes because the prescription was a little unclear, I really didn't want to have another exam because I didn't want to pay for it they said they wouldn't charge me but they just wanted to make sure that I have the correct prescription. So I go in and let them check my eyes sure enough I had the wrong prescription they had me down for distance when it should be for reading I have a stigmatism not distance problem I've always had a slight stigmatism. Since I was in a hurry and I had a long day after going on a job interview, getting mail and needing to get to physical therapy I just had the glasses sent to my P.O box since I'm not in a hurry to get them. I can read fine without them it just help when I looking at a computer too long. The charge to have them mailed was $15 which I didn't think since the glasses for free because of my insurance. So in conclusion if you're in need of glasses and you're in the downtown area go to Cohen's Optical at 151 Montague Street well you won't get ripped off and they will give you what you need and not try to upsell you ridiculous add on"s. Doc Mark Steinman was great! Very chatty, but it's always nice to hear about what's going on in your eyes and why. The receptionists were somewhere between indifferent and friendly, but the service was quick and efficient and I see WAY better than when my last optometrist sent me out the door. Walked in and walked out in 30-40 minutes on a Monday afternoon. Thanks!!! Oh wait, cons: that last star.. they were a little pushy about me buying my contacts there, and somehow my copay went up from $50 to $75 because I had to get fitted for astigmatism. I guess that's not anybody's fault, but just worthwhile to note. They had a decent selection of frames, but I wouldn't make it my #1 stop for that. Dr. Steinman gave me the most thorough eye exam I've ever had! He was friendly, and answered all my questions. He corrected my contact lenses! Yes, you heard me right, corrected. The former Pearle Vision I frequented prescribed me wrong. Dr. Steinman informed me that I was 4 times stronger than I needed to be in my left eye! Thank the eye gods for this doctor. Last year I bought my glasses at this Pearle Vision, after checking the poor selections at other places. I had a presecription from my own eye doctor. The people at Pearle were great -- helped me find the perfect glasses, and suggested best ways to use their buy one get one free offer. It turned out that the original presiption was not good -- but Pearle had me see their optomitrist, remade the glasses for free and made sure they were right. No questions. And now, last weekend I stepped on my beautiful progressive lenses and broke them. I stopped by to see what they could do for me, and the experts in the office, took the glasses and rebuilt the broken frame for me right there in the office, for NO CHARGE! They didn't even ask me to prove that I bought them from them! Great place, great people, great location (pop off the train on my way to work). read more

Dr. Steinman did a thorough eye exam and fitted me perfectly with my new "monocle". I am that person that never had glasses so I don't know how to take care of them now that I suddenly need reading glasses. I can't count how many pairs I have sat on, scratched, or lost in the last year. Hence my "monocle": one contact that goes in my non dominant eye for reading, while leaving my dominant eye bare for everything else. He fitted the prescription so perfectly that I really haven't lost any distance vision when I am wearing the contact. It is good practice before you try mono lasik, since some people cannot tolerate it. It works fine for me. The staff are just sweethearts, so very nice and accommodating. read more

I suffered a retinal detachment almost exactly one year ago while attending Mardi Gras in New Orleans. After two surgeries and at least six different changes in single-vision prescriptions I have finally recovered and my vision has stabilized to the point where I can wear progressive lenses again. I ordered a pair from Pearl spending over $300 out of my own pocket, mind you! I received a message after 6:30 today saying that they had arrived at the store for pickup. I called back immediately after hearing the message at 10 to seven and explained that it was I was leaving for New Orleans tomorrow and I would like to get my new glasses before the trip. The store closes at seven and after putting me on hold for at least a minute, the associate stated that if I got there at 7 they would accommodate my request. I rushed out of my office and sprinted over to Montague Street arriving at 7:03. The store was dark, the doors were locked and no one responded when I knocked repeatedly on the window . Poor customer service! I will dearly miss not having these glasses at Mardi Gras to more clearly see all the happy faces shouting "Throw me some beads Mister!" Wow, Susan at Pearle Vision has the WORST customer service I have ever experienced. The first time she was able to find the insurance ID number quickly, but today her co-worker was taking care of us and obviously he was having problems and was asking her for help. I also asked her to assist us since its taking a long time, and she flipped and raised her voice at me and was offended as she took it as we were telling her how to do her job. Obviously we were only trying to ask for her help. She kept escalating we felt we had no choice but to walk out because of her hostility. Absolutely worst service Ive ever experienced. Everyone besides Mr. Steinman (doctor) was very unprofessional. The other gentleman (believe his name is also Mark) who works on the floor told me last minute that I needed to purchase a pair of glasses along with my eye exam. He said he he texted me saying they were not just doing exams. Website didnt list this, nor did I get a phone call, email or text message about this. As soon as I said I didn't get a text message he immediately said "looks like we wont be processing this exam". I was extremely stunned and humiliated in front of another client. After I spoke to the doctor, he said all of his text message history was "erased" and didn't have a record of this. The doc eventually let me just pay for the exam but the other gentleman (I believe Mark) was extremely ill mannered and hostile. I had a great experience last month here. I was able to make an eye appt online for the next day - very convenient. The staff were all very helpful, and the eye doctor was friendly, efficient, and answered all of my questions. They had a good selection of affordable eyewear, so I found cute frames that were only slightly above and beyond what my insurance covered. My glasses were ready to be picked up within a week. What impressed me the most was my experience with exchanging my lenses. I had asked for transition lenses, which I'd never had before, but realized quickly they weren't right for me. Although Pearle Vision couldn't refund me the $100 cost of the transitions (understandable), they exchanged the lenses for free, and even made them anti-glare complimentary - usually $100! They also tightened up my old sunglasses for me for free. Customer service-friendly; quick, easy, and pleasant experience. read more

Not sure why other people hate on this place. If you are looking for a solid eye exam, eye care and friendly staff this place meets your criteria. If you are looking for trendy, perhaps this isn't it. I have seen their doctor on several occasions and he has always been spot on. They have also been incredibly helpful in fitting me in with an appointment when i had eye infections and could not bare to wait for an appointment. I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in until the moment I had to say good bye. Everyone was kind and very patient. They do not book so many patients at one time that you have to sit and wait for what seems like an unreasonable amount of time. I truly understand why so many people want Dr. Steinman to be the main care giver for their eyes. He truly is thorough and his personality makes it easy to do the eye exams, I have already told my neighbors to give this Pearle Vision a try when they are ready to have their eyes examined again. Dr. Steinman is awesome - he fills the appointment sharing facts about the eye, major eye care companies and the progression of your eyes as you age. I feel like I learned more in this one visit than I have in my entire lifetime of visiting doctors of any type. The office staff is friendly and helpful, they go out of their way to make you feel at home. Additionally, their prices on contacts rival the large online suppliers and you don't have to worry about submitting anything to your insurers (they deduct everything up front for you). The place is an incredible collection of humanity, integrity, and talent. Ted made a lengthy repair on my damaged wire frame after I walked in right off the street. Charge? No charge. He then patiently chatted with me, guiding me through my sense that I might need an upgrade to the older prescription of my second backup glasses. At first, he thought, maybe you don't. Looking further he determined that they were a bit fuzzy and that my last eye-exam for them had been nearly four years ago. In that case, my medical insurance would cover the new prescription lenses and it was a good idea for me to do it. Mark Steinman, the OD, then made the examination such fun that it seemed like was over with too soon. Nonetheless, the prescription he gave resulted in the most visually perfect fit set of eyeglasses I've ever had. Now, I want to wear the glasses every chance I get. And when I went to pick the glasses up, Swan was very generous with her time adjusting them for me. Why would you ever want to go anywhere else ! read more

Dr Steinman is awesome - very thorough, patient, and super friendly. HOWEVER, customer service is absolute sh*t. I was basically tossed to the side after I made it clear that I wanted more time to research my 1st pair eyeglasses (after my exam). I have been going here for years and always good but as of my last appointment I had to give them a stellar review. I like an idiot broke my glasses and scheduled the next and earliest appointment- which was 2 business days from my call. Quick enough. Dr. Steinman is very thorough, friendly and quick as always! I picked out my glasses and have let them know that I broke my glasses. It usually takes about 3 days for them to be ready. Since they knew I broke my glasses, they went out of their way and said that they'll try to get them ready for me as quickly as they can. The VERY next day they had them ready at 5pm! Whaaaat? The doctor who gave me the eye exam was excellent but when I called them to ask for my prescription over the phone because I wanted to buy my contact online as they were less expensive, they told me they wouldn't email it to me and that I had to come in to get it. The woman I spoke with at 12:15PM on Aug. 17, 2016 was beyond rude and followed the denial up with "The Doctor wrote it for you, so you should have kept it." as though I was a kid who was in trouble for loosing her homework because I misplaced a tiny piece of paper the size of a note card. I politely explained that I knew my prescription and all I needed was the BC measurement in order to fulfill it online and she refused to give me this figure, for no other reason than to just be a jerk. I asked to speak to the doctor and she told me he was with a patient and I could speak with him, but that he would tell me the same thing, in a very rude, generally unhelpful and condescending manner. I reminded her that I had just spent almost $500 while I was there on sunglasses and an exam and continued to remain polite, but she had a major attitude, as though she ran dispatch on the phone all day and hated her job. If you are looking for an eye exam and the related in Brooklyn Heights, go elsewhere. There are plenty of other eye care businesses on Montague Street that won't treat you rudely. read more

Went to Pearle to get the buy one get one free promotion and ended up leaving with 3 pairs. They have a great clearance selection that i picked from for a third pair I got 50% a Tory Burch pair (WOW!!). I brought in my Rx but the doctor at Pearle Vision was more than happy to answer my question. next time ill do everything there. The staff is professional and also funny not stuffy and in a rush for you to buy like some places. read more

It's hard finding good customer service when dealing with vision dilemmas. I was due for a check up and new prescription. My old pair of glasses looked like a sad story. It had broken in five different places and was being held together by superglue and a sewing pin. Not to mention the right lens was so scratched up that it looked like I was looking through a frosted screen and tilted obviously to the right side of my chin. Yes, chin. I walked in and they walked me through my insurance coverage. I decided to get contact lenses but considering the state of my depressed glasses, I was encouraged to get a new pair. With no hesitation, I applied for the credit and was approved. They also told me that since I got a year supply of contact lenses, I could take advantage of the 50% discount off of my glasses (which comes in handy when you have a -5 and -8 vision prescription). I saved over $400 that my bum insurance didn't cover. Not to mention, Dr. Steinberg was a real treat. Really nice and subtly funny. He made me feel safe putting my eyes in his hands.
