Beryl Pearmund is an absolute force behind the success of this winery. My wife and I have been here three times so far. Most recently my wife spearheaded an event for a group of women of DC. It was their annual picnic and it could not have been nicer. I have never seen better customer service. I will include some pictures but you need to experience this winery yourself. Fabulous vineyard one hour away from Washington, DC. While the temps are pleasant, make sure that you pick up a lunch in nearby Warrenton or New Baltimore and come here to buy a flight of delicious wines and then sit among the vineyards. There is in addition a large outdoor patio area as well as a large indoor space for cooler weather. The Cellars also sell a variety of cheese/crackers/meats. The staff was super-friendly. On your drive out, stop by the Market which is in a separate adorable farmhouse. Apparently, this area is available for rental. One of the granddaddy wineries hereabouts. There are half a dozen other oldies but the inventory has grown so much in the last 30 years. We can't express the wonder of and love for places like this. Our son worked in the vineyard and bottling while we enjoyed learning and wine appreciation. A beautiful location. Extremely quiet. You can sit out amongst the vines. They actually have a huge property to tour. Our favorite was going down by the stream. It's just away from everything. Yes, they are 21+, but their Farmhouse is all-ages so don't feel left out if you have kids. For us, sitters are a must so we can get our adult time in. I think in due time we'll become members. All of their wines are surprisingly good and the sangria is great on hot days and for take home. read more

I'm not sure why it shows that they are good for kids; they don't allow kids to most of the facilities. We used to love coming there, but then learned that they are not kid friendly, so we can't visit any more. The wine is good though. Always a great experience visiting and tasting at Pearmund Cellars! The tasting room is very large and can accommodate several. The indoor seating area is big and comfortable in the air conditioning/heating. The outdoor seating area and tasting bar is even more vast, with family games under the large oak tree overlooking the grape vines. We always love going to Pearmund. Heard that they were doing barrel tastings this month, and since I've never done anything like that at a winery, and Pearmund is a favorite, decided there was no time like the present! The winery was very busy when I arrived, since it was a warm sunny day, but there was still plenty of parking. Luckily they have a large parking area here. I was worried there might not be any more space for the barren tasting, but it was not a problem. The charge was $40 per person, to include a food pairing with each wine. They were taking people in as groups so there was a short wait between tastings, but I was given a glass of the chambourcin based rose and there were plenty of comfortable seats so it wasn't a bad wait. When the group was taken in, we went first to the back where the steel tanks are and had an introduction to winemaking together with some really tasty appetizers. As the tasting progressed, and we moved through the winery from the tank room to the barrel room, food pairings were brought out to sample with the wines. The food was amazing! Everything from lobster bisque to lamb chop lollipops, and we finished with dark chocolate covered bacon and the reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The winemaker was very informative and personable and really happy to answer questions about the Pearmund wines, Virginia wines and wine in general. One of the highlights for me was the explanation of how Chardonnay comes together with different components to produce the distinctive fruity, buttery and oaky flavors and how the winemakers can choose to balance those flavor profiles. Overall a wonderful experience. Really can't recommend it highly enough! If you've got any interest in learning more about wine, this is the place to go! Pearmud Cellars is a beautiful vineyard with amazing tasting wines..we had a private tasting outside with John. Not only was he knowledgeable about wines but gave us a background about the vineyard. Lets start with the white wines, i am not a big white wine drinkers but my favorite one on the list was the Petit Manseng , just enough sweetness and a hint of fuits and great wine to sip on a hot summer day. I ended up buying the port, yes i do have a lil obsession with great port! Lol This an ideal location for dates and angout with girlfriends as there are plenty of room and great wine.. the staff were not only great and welcoming but allowed us to go into the Barrel room for some pics and to check it out.. We had a great time! We did a tasting on a Saturday and there were plenty of people but not too crowded. It was a gorgeous day so we took advantage of the beautiful views at the patio bar! The staff was all incredibly friendly and able to recommend wine we would like. We particularly liked the black ops bottle- delicious! I also have to mention the oysters- we visitors on an oyster day so there was a raw oyster bar (with yummy charbroiled options as well!). I've been here a half dozen times. Sometimes I like it, other times I love it. But today's visit was possibly my favorite, and impressing me with wine is a tall order. They also have the most easy going wine dog in Virginia, which as a dog lover is a huge plus. If you don't know their rep, Chris Pearmund is one of the better known figures in the Virginia wine industry. I wouldn't call him the wine maker, but he's definitely their main 'idea guy'. Not only does he run Pearmund Cellars, he cooperates with several other wineries in the area. I came for a sale of their "Black Ops" special red blend, but decided to do a tasting anyway. And I'm glad I did! This line up was extra spectacular. They had a few of their 'special edition' wines on their lineup (including Black Ops), as well as several wines from Chris' new winery, Effingham Estate (opening early 2017). While their staff has always been well trained, my server Becky was really over the top. Despite peppering her with geeky wine question, she was able to answer nearly every one without a beat. VERY impressive. What I tried: 2014 "40th Anniversary" Old Vine Chardonnay (because the vines were 40 years old). Crisp but not overly oaked; very nice. 2014 Viognier: Nice nose, but a bit too flowery on the palate for me 2015 Effingham Traminette: Traminettes are hit or miss, but this was not exactly my favorite. 2015 Petit Manseng: I LOVE this grape, and liked their off dry take on it. But I'm looking forward to them making a dry version next year. 2014 Merlot: Their tasting sheet was spot on. Earthy, with notes of vanilla & dark fruit (especially dark cherry). 2014 Cab Franc: In fact I had this twice; aerated and straight from the bottle, just to show me the difference. I liked the straight-from-the-bottle tasting (more earthy), but absolutely loved it after it was aerated, which brought the dark cherry notes out. 2014 Petit Verdot: Very well balanced; not too bold but not too soft. Loved it. 2013 Cab Sav: Very nice; earthy but not too over the top 2014 Ameritage (their take on Meritage): OK to pretty good. 2013 Ameritage Reserve: Now we're talking! Very, very nice, especially on the finish. 2014 Black Ops red blend: Surprisingly fruit forward. I picked up a 3-pack for $75 (!!!), which was a steal. They also have the coolest label I've seen in a while. 2014 Reserve Malbec: Big mouthfeel; more reminiscent of the South American Malbecs than Virginia Malbecs. Also liked it a lot. For Effingham my notes aren't as good, but they were severing several. Their dry Rose was AMAZING. And their Chardonnay was also very good; it didn't go thru malolactic fermentation, so it retained its crispness. I liked the others, but not quite as much as the ones from Pearmund. read more

Just updating my review, still love their Black Ops it's delicious, just a note to those who have children, I didn't check and should have. They are a 21 an older only winery and I totally understand that, when your done with a hard weeks work who wants to hear a child crying. My wife and I had a baby about a month ago and decided to head out to a winery got there and they told me it was a 21 and older only. In what appears to be an unprecedented move, I actually volunteered to be the designated driver on a day trip out to the vineyards in Virginia. This managed to shock and confuse some friends. "But wait", they asked, "don't you want to drink too?" Normally, the answer is yes, but when it comes to Virginia wines usually my response is "no, just no". I have been burned before. Learned my lesson. I don't even know too much about wines, I just know what I like, and it has been the norm at other tastings in the area that only 1 out of every 5 wines was palatable, but when it came to Pearmund Cellars that was my one tasting of the day that I allowed myself and I was glad I did. Here are some of the wines we went through: 2013 Petit Manseng Dry, white citrus wine. Definitely a summer wine. 2013 Riesling Lighter less syrupy wine. LOVE THIS ONE.I bought a bottle at $25. 2011 Viognier A strong white "with subtle hints of of tropical fruits, citrus and honeysuckle". 2011 Old Vine Chardonnay I am not a chardonnay fan due to the oak flavors but this one was buttery and tasted like apples. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. It is super dog friendly. Throughout the day of visiting wineries this was by far my favorite. Down to earth people, they didn't care the dog was outside. I had spent other parts of my day being told to put my dog in the car (Bull Run Winery[I strongly dislike you]) while their employee's dogs ran around, so I was bit nervous coming here. At the end of the tasting, we bought a bottle of Viognier and enjoyed them with mini picnic (they sell a good crab dip) outside. This winery also has some spectacular scenery. Lia's M's review is pretty accurate in that it does indeed transport you to Napa or Sonoma. Fields of grape vines, large grassy areas, a cute barn. This is the place to take some cute pictures. They also have lots of games for kids to play, and cornhole for the larger drunker kids. Additionally the long driveway here is out of Indiana Jones. Prepare for some unpaved roads and bouncy action. If you have a sports car, beware. If you have an SUV, hit the gas and have fun! read more

The second and final winery stop on Saturday was at Pearmund Cellars - another favorite of mine! Two us opted for the tasting which include the majority of the red wines - while the other went for the tasting which includes more whites. Many of the wines were very tasty - and have much potential. Many of the reds will be even more amazing in a few years after some time aging in the wine rack. I was eager to taste the latest iterations of their Malbec and Petit Verdot reds - some of my faves. Both were good and have potential. Redmund was nowhere to be found this day - Sue told me he was at home. We were disappointed he was not on-site. He is part of the winery experience! We visited on a Tuesday afternoon, so it wasn't crowded, but appreciated the COVID precautions (including a tile placed on the table to note to staff that it needs to be sanitized). Everyone who works there enjoys what they are doing therefore making your experience fun and pleasurable. The food they offer in the shop is delicious.. so much I've stopped bringing my own charcuterie board. When they have food trucks it really adds to the experience. Let's not forget the wine! Really tremendous experience. I did the wine tasting which included 4 whites and 6 reds and for the first time visiting a long list of wineries in Virginia I was actually having difficulty narrowing it down to just 2 bottles of wine to purchase because I liked so many. The tasting is $10 and worth every penny because there is such a variety that they offer. I loved the 2013 Old Vine Chardonnay which was oaky and buttery which is exactly what I love in a Chardonnay. I also loved the 2013 Ameritage which is a Bordeaux style wine and had a great finish. Surprisingly I do not like Rieslings but it only had a low RS content and it was an easy wine to drink. The next time I come back I will probably purchase the 2012 Merlot, really impressed by the balance of fruit and tannins. The woman who provided the actual tasting experience (I think her name was Ann Marie) was absolutely wonderful at really being very descriptive and passionate about wine. The barrel room has a great atmosphere to experience with a group of friends and I look forward to putting together a group event to enjoy during the summer there. read more

Went to Pearmund Cellars recently once wineries began reopening. It was a wonderful experience. Their reservation system was easy, we felt that they were doing a great job with safety precautions, tables were well spaced. We brought our own picnic, but there was food available for order. I've been to a couple wineries and i can honestly say this was by far one of the best ones. I loved every wine on the tastings. I'll be coming back here for more. My favorite whites were petit manseng, old vine chardonnay, Riesling.. They were all good. I can't just pick one. My favorite Reds were the Merlot which is always my favorite, Cabernet franc - I think my most favorite, Armitage and syrah. The tasting made it hard to pick favorites because they were all good. Normally, I only have a couple favorite but I didn't expect to like almost all of the wines here. Ill def be coming back for more. And tug! Best wine dog, is the most friendliest dog. If you happen to stop by Pearmund before the rest of the crowds, you will have a great experience. If you get there when it is crowded (which anymore feels like nearly always) you will have to wait for a space at the tasting bar, in the line to the bathroom, and in line for the register. So please bring your patience with you. There is not a lot of space, so I think they staff accordingly, but be prepared, this place gets very busy and the waits can be fairly long. I can't say I don't understand though, their wines are fantastic! Their Chardonnay is one of my favorites in VA, and I love all their reds. If you can secure a spot on it, the porch is a great place to sip wine and enjoy the views. If not, plan on bringing a blanket and grabbing a spot on their lawn. Another great touch: in the winter they will sometimes even have homemade chili or soup available for purchase. read more

Their wines are top notch; the tastings are very informative; the tasting room and outdoor table areas are comfortable, and surrounding vineyards offer a pleasant view in which to enjoy the wine and food, which you bring yourself or buy there; and to top it off the staff are so nice, helpful, and welcoming and really make you feel that you are special. I have always found Pearmund wines, reds, whites, dessert, or sparkling to be exceptional and worth the cost which is quite reasonable. Considering how often I've been to this winery over the years, I'm surprised I haven't thought to write a review until now! My first visit was shortly after I moved to Virginia around 2010-ish, and Pearmund Cellars has remained my favorite Virginia winery ever since. For a few reasons: - Wine: several varieties, but the Ameritage and Petit Verdot has been a perennial favorites - Wine: tasting includes ~11 wines for $10 - Venue: adult-only weekends - for me, it's more relaxing without other peoples' children there - Venue: access to the barrel room which is lovely, imo - Venue: no loud, live music - Venue: some low-key entertainment (corn-hole, etc.) - Venue: open access to walk among the vines The overall effect is a peaceful, very chill place to sip incredible wine and feel a little more connected to what you're drinking. A few more notes - there are snacks to purchase when you're there. I think they used to let you bring picnics with you (at least I recall people doing that 5 or so years ago), but I think they now encourage visitors to purchase the food they have available. If you have a big group or some sort of special circumstance, my guess is that they would probably make exceptions. In my experience though, the cheese and bread options are sufficient enough and they even have gluten-free crackers. All-in-all, it's hard to beat fantastic wine in a bucolic environment. If you don't know where you're at, you're already drunk! The opening drive: By design or not, I fancied the scenic drive around the vineyards before making it to the Main building. Pearmund's greeter: With a wagging tail, Tug the Wine dog loves to be petted/belly rubs(Me too! :))))) Please note: Due to Tug being on a special diet, Pearmunds has a posted sign asking customers not to feed him. Wine Presenter: Taking in the wine for maximum benefit, Wine Presenter Kathleen showed me the proper techniques(e.g. swirling the glass, breathing, etc...). $10 Wine Testing: For ten dollars, you get to sample ten Pearmund wines: 5 white; 5 red, which I think is terrific value. Some favorites: White 2016 Petit Mansenger: Whether it's tasting/smelling, this dry wine is a fruit bombshell. Kathleen said it pairs well with seafood. Sushi anyone? Red 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon: On the nose, I smell Cherry cola. When tasting, I first get spices, blackberry and a woody finish from the oak wood barrels the wine is stored in. I attended the Lunch at The Farmstore on Sunday, August 28. Roger Sherman, owner/pitmaster of The District Pit, catered the event, and Pearmund provided the wine pairings. There was Smoked salmon, smoked chicken, smoked pulled pork, baked beans, pasta salad, mac & cheese, and pound cake with peach coulis for dessert. Everything was superb! Live music and Coyote Grille food truck available tonight at the Wine Club pickup event. Tug, the owner's dog is super sweet and can be seen lying or walking around the tasting room or patio.
