So the 3 star rating is really due to the price vs. wow factor. The atmosphere is great. It's like having dinner with friends in your backyard. Loved it. The stars start to disappear when you start looking at the menu, very limited and very price for the area. The food was good, not saying we didn't enjoy it. No one disliked what they had, but no one raved about it either. For the price point someone should be raving about their meal. I guess that's my biggest issue with Peerless. I had the fresh fish of the day, Salmon. It was definitely fresh, but blah, and a bit under cooked. They sides were all good though, but doesn't equal $42. Same for our friend's Salmon tartar. They said blah. My wife was hoping to have the skirt steak per their website menu, she has to be GF and doesn't do fish. Skirt steak was replaced by a $52 NY Steak salad. Yes $52 salad. Server didn't try to upsell it as something other than a salad so she skipped it and picked the baked Chicken Breast. This was good, especially the potatoes, but she said my baked Chicken at home was much better. That's not what I'm going for in a pricey restaurant. The best on the menu was the pork cheeks. If they can raise the bar on the other entrees to meet the pork cheeks then I'd definitely say it was worth it. The desserts were ok, not great and certainly not bad, just ok. read more

It was our anniversary and they went above and beyond to make sure the night was great. Complimentary champagne and the most delicious meal. I can't say enough about the amazing staff. I admit that it is hard to get 5 stars out of me. I had the good fortune of experiencing Charlie Trotter's place, and very few restaurants in my usual grazing grounds can compare well to that. Nonetheless, Peerless is simply the best restaurant that I have been to in southern Oregon over the last 20+ years of visiting. My wife and I agreed that Peerless compares well with the better restaurants in Portland. I started with the Poke and oysters. The poke is the best of any I have had in Hawaii, and I ordered poke every chance I got on two separate week-long trips. Raw oysters are raw oysters. I love them. These were very fresh and crisp tasting. The mignonette was,... well? a mignonette. I'm more of a horseradish kinda guy, but it was a good mignonette. My wife had the lamb shank in a bed a bulgar wheat (I think). She loved it . I really enjoyed the taste I had. I had the confit leg quarter on a bed of thin sliced fennel and rice. Delicious! I want to learn how to shave fennel that way. The wait staff was very efficient and friendly. They even let us sit outside, since the weather was so nice, even though they were not quite set up for it. We will definitely be going back on our next visit. read more

Peerless had great staff, cocktails, fresh ingredients and good atmosphere. The food however was way overpriced for what it was. I'm fine paying $40-60 a plate, but these dishes lacked any restraint. They were confusing to the palate and seemed to be trying way too hard. My lovely cut and cooked Barbacoa was put over hummus. The strawberries in the fried sweet and sour cauliflower made no sense. The crab cakes were on point. In all we were disappointed, especially for the price. I cannot lavish enough praise on this establishment, and in particular to Colin, who was an extremely knowledgeable, charming and attentive server and wine director.  We dined at Peerless two nights in a row and had to force ourselves to go elsewhere on the third night of our stay!   From the well-crafted cocktails, to the delicious happy hour food options, to the outstanding entrees and specials...everything was spectacular.  Colin's wine list, recommended pairings and wine flights were all spot on, and his knowledge of local Oregon wine was impressive and helpful in guiding our local tasting adventures.  The interior is well appointed, contemporary in design and comfortably classy.  We'd heard this is the best restaurant in Ashland, and I do not doubt it at all.  Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an exemplary dining experience at Peerless Restaurant whenever you find yourself in Ashland! read more

A special thank you to Crissy and the Staff for the delicious meal, beautiful setting and great service. Everything was as Crissy promised and better. We had a private room, the tables were beautifully set including flowers and napkin rings, the variety and quality of our fixed price meal was met with delight (even the request for gluten free), and the service was excellent. The food was not only delicious but very attractively served and warm and served promptly. Crissy and staff assisted us with a video presentation, which due to our lack of tech skills, took an hour to set up. They were supportive and never inpatient. Pretty decent food with a great outdoor garden. My wife and I did not dine outside though due to the summer heat. We ordered the ceviche for our app and it was very refreshing. Our main courses were tasty. My tuna burger with avocado slices was served perfectly seared. Our waiter was outstanding with great wit and charm. He really made the dining experience, by even giving me a side of Siracha sauce for my fries. Inside the restaurant was very quiet. Only halfway through our dining experience did they turn on ambient music. Don't know why it wasn't on the whole time. read more

Another night in Ashland, another stellar dining experience. Four of us had actually decided on this trip to get a cottage with a proper kitchen and cook for ourselves most of the time. Thus, on our last evening, Peerless was the choice for our one dinner out. We first walked by the place in the warmth of the morning and checked out the dinner menu posted on the door. Okay, the truth is we read the dessert menu and THEN the dinner menu. Small plates for dinner, followed by rich desserts - that's just smart living! We decided we had to have dinner in the beautiful garden. By the time our dinner reservation came up, a thunderstorm was boiling up in the North and we started thinking that might not be such a great idea. But as pleasant as the interior is with its warm hues and open beam ceiling, we still found the garden irresistible and, as luck would have it, the storm kept its distance. Ms. A started off with a caprese salad, shared all around. The mild fresh mozzarella was topped with fresh summer tomatoes and basil sprouts, all topped with fresh ground pepper and crunchy crystals of salt. For small plates, we had, among the four of us, butternut squash gnocchi with an exquisite sage browned butter sauce, yam and sweet potatoes with a bacon/carmelized onion/walnut relish, seared ahi with baby bok choi, fried yuca chips, and the 'surf and turf': a coulotte beef filet with grilled marlin. The latter was the most extravagant, though still under $18. The steak and the fish were both perfectly cooked and seared with a salty coating that brought out the subtleties of the flavors. The gnocchi was also tasty with fresh sage infusing the buttery dumplings. And I think its safe to say the yam/sweet potato melange was as glorious as root vegetables can hope for- thanks to bacon of course. The only disappointment in the dinner offerings were the yuca chips. they look like potato chips but lack any discernible flavor. What was called for we thought was an elaborate gourmet catsup on the side, maybe a curried version. It was great to open the now familiar dessert menu and not already feel as if we were stuffed from dinner. We got the first four items on the menu, a lemon and chocolate tartlet, a vanilla bean creme brulee, walnut maple cake with brown butter gelato, and the 'orbit' cake, a dense flourless delivery of chocolate into the bloodstream so fatally intoxicating it might be called 'obit' cake. The dessert portions were generous and this was the only part of the meal where it might have made sense to split instead of getting one item each. The maple cake and gelato were wholesome and satisfying with no lack of butter in either, the meyer lemon and chocolate tartlet bursting with flavor. The creme brulee was a bit less solid than I like and rather than an overwhelming vanilla flavor it smacked of Grand Marnier. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Service was gracious and professional, never causing us to feel rushed or neglected. A very good dining experience all around! read more

I'll be honest - the only time I was at Peerless, I had downed one too many glasses of their fabulous wine, and the rest of the night is a bit of a wonderful blur. I know I was happy, I know there was pork involved, and I'm pretty sure I ate two desserts. That might not sound like a very stellar review, but if you think about it, it truly is. Best service in Ashland which is filled with great restaurants and good service. The small plates menu is so affordable, much more reasonable than anything in our hometown. No wonder the locals all direct out-of-town visitors to this gem in what they call the Railroad District. Our waiter two nights in a row was Angie, who not only was happy to see us return the next night but of course remembered our likes and dislikes and steered us to different wonderful items (the mussels!) and great affordable wines by the glass. We were off to the theater so she was careful to not over serve us but suggested we split a second glass. What a find for my wife and I! Great local buzz but very gracious attitude to us visitors. I think Peerless just beat out Smithfields for my personal 'best restaurant in Ashland' rating. We had excellent service, with a very personal touch from the server, and great wine. The bacon-wrapped, chorizo stuffed dates were amazing. The lamb meatballs filled with bleu cheese were stunning. The sampler plate was fantastic. And then the filet mignon came. I have never had a more perfectly cooked piece of meat. I grilled the server for about a minute on the chef's definition of medium rare before I agreed to order it medium rare ... and he nailed it. I could cut it with a fork, and it was evenly cooked all the way through. Wow. ...and it was on a fluffy bed of chorizo-whipped potatoes. Oh yeah, that's the stuff. I ate the filet mignon with a fantastic Secreto de Viu Manent 2010 Malbec, which was the Peerless wine special for the week. I took a picture of the label so I'd be able to order it - the Malbec paired perfectly, and had notes of blackberry, raspberry, and black pepper. It wasn't too heavy for a warm evening. Standard medium-scale dinner fare, but with the option to order many things tapas style. The food is good, not mind-blowing, but very solid. My beet salad had a poblano pepper dressing, which was different and delicious. Great charcuterie plate as well. Points off for giving us an 8 pm reservation. We didn't know it was going to be crazy at that time--with the staff literally running around trying to get people out for their plays--so we ended up standing around for a long time without anyone so much as acknowledging our presence. Why not just have us come in at 8:30 so they'd have a minute to take a breather and wipe off the sweat? read more

We have eaten here each year for the last 3 years; it is usually very good. However, it feels like it is not as good now as in the past. We shared our salad. While the greens were good and the size just right, we could not taste any dressing. We think they forgot to put any on. Rebecca ordered the Porterhouse pork chop. It was brined in cider and cooked to perfection. This was as nice a dish as we have ever had at this restaurant. It was accompanied by a twice cooked yam. This entire dish is as good as it gets. I ordered the risotto; it feet like it had been cooked ahead of time and microwaved to heat it up. The portion was small. It had little taste. It was disappointing. We did not order bread, so we could order dessert. My gelato tasted like ice cream. The flavor was good, but it was not gelato. The brandy cookie did not taste of brandy. Rebecca ordered a chocolate and praline cake. You would think with it advertised as it was the praline would be in the cake. No; it was ordinary chocolate cake with praline sauseon top. The praline was good; the cake to be forgotten. I expect we were a bit critical based upon our treatment by the host. We were staying at the hotel next door, they made the reservation for us and we eat breakfast in the restaurant. We had reservations and there were several nice tables for 2, but he insisted on putting us at the table next to the door to the kitchen. I even changed out of my jeans, because we were dining out. We looked good. We insisted and we finally got a good table. Not happy at the Peerless. I think we will take a year off before trying it again. read more

On our trip to Ashland, we went to Peerless twice! The first night we went for my birthday and liked it so much we went back the following evening. All of the food was fabulous - the small plates are a great way to go so you can sample many things. We loved the lamb meatballs and the sampler plate. It's not a cheap place but it's not overly expensive either. It's definitely worth the cost. Our service the first night was great. Tim was our server and he checked in on us a lot and was just great all around. The second night, our server was not so good. Mark seemed to forget about us a lot and didn't bring us items like plates, pretty essential for, you know, eating. But overall, I'd definitely recommend it and we'll definitely be back. read more

We were here over the holidays on a recommendation from a friend. The property is a very cool old hotel and beautiful gardens, which we couldn't enjoy since it was December. We arrived early with intentions of having a drink and scoping out the place and menu - well, we got there at 4:45 and they didn't open until 5:30. This is where my 5-stars come in - the manager Bill could not have been more gracious, offering to make us a drink and bring it to us in the hotel sitting room until they were ready to serve us in the restaurant - and he came and got us 15 minutes before they were supposed to open. It was about us and not him, he truly had that customer service people so many people do not get :""People may not remember exactly what you did or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel." Zappos founder. The food was great too! Best burger I have had in a long time with grass-fed beef and Tillamook cheddar. Beet salad and duck breast excellent too. Great service. Last night we went for drinks and appetizers first; our waiter Todd was gracious, efficient and handsome. The tomatoe soup was really amazing, as was the sweet potato and yam starter which had a bacon, onion and cheese type of dressing. We had planned for dinner at Coquina around the corner, and headed there. Upon arrival, we found the power had gone out. They seemed slightly in a panic, and our waiter didn't eve bring us water or a wine list. With a 7-yr-old in tow and not wanting to be waiting frustrated all night, we left after sittingwaiting 40 min., and went back to Peerless. We werer assured we'd have food within a half hour. Their attitude about the power outage was to "roll with it" and we had a wonderful time: more food out of this world! Angie was an old pro of a waitress, knew her wines well and recommended the 2008 Aubichon Pinot Noir which was complex and lovely; one of our fa oritce wines ever! All of our food constituted the finest meal we've had in a long time--so much flavor! The filet mignon and its sauce was tender and tasty; the gnocchi was home-made and delicious in a special sauce; the strip steak and prawns also delicious in a yummy chimichirri sauce; and we had the melange of vegetables to be healthy and were surprised by how delicious they all were! Followed by homemade ice cream in a cookie bowl, we were one happy group!! The combination of unigue and outstanding flavors and food well prepared (even with a power outage!) and professional, friendly staff gives this restaurant a 5+ star rating; they are Peerless indeed! read more

I've eaten at Peerless several times and the food and service have always been OK. But this night everything was wrong. I guess this happens sometimes, but in my humble opinion a really good resturant can pull things out of a nose dive, unfortunately not tonight. First thing that bugged me, screaming baby next to our table, when I'm paying top dollar for food and service I don't want to hear an irritated infant while eating. Second thing, I ordered a pint of stout, which was served badly poured (see photo) half foam and half beer. I ordered Kobe flat iron steak ($37.00!) for main and was served a Kobe burger, the waitress virtually called me a liar when I informed her that I ordered steak not burger. Oh well that's the last time I'll eat there. 'Peerless', an arrogant name that this resturant sadly doesn't live up to. read more

After moving away and finding myself in town with my wife for Valentines Day, I decided to finally spring for dinner there. I must say, I wasn't all that impressed. It was good and all, the service and atmosphere were both amazing, but the food was just good, not phenomenal like I had been told.
