This dining experience was tainted by ordering 2 drinks at the Bar then taking them to the table. I have done this many times at restaurants and most always they accommodate and Add to total bill. Especially for business this is helpful. In this case the Bar tender / server came to table & essentially demanded payment so she could get her Tip..., Rude, Unprofessional, unnecessary all for a few $$. She finally agreed after announcing to entire table this would cut her out. So I gave her cash to get rid of this embarrassing situation. Firstly - this gem of a spot is in the railroad district and while seems small at entrance, is quite spacious with room in the back and lovely outside patio area when weather permits. The bar and fireplace areas are lovely - decor and ambiance was inviting. We had Thanksgiving dinner here and they made the menu easy by only needing to select two items. Cocktails delish and homemade dinner rolls and turkey confit croquettes were delish although the blue cheese bit in the croquettes was a little too strong. Carrot soup was flavorful but almost had an indian cuisine hint. The green beans were yummy with crispy onion bits on top and two of us enjoyed the turkey entree which was complete with bread pudding/stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, squash. Two of us had the fish/halibut which was very dry and served over creamy mashed potatoes with 3 halved brussell sprouts tucked underneath. We both agreed that the brussells were the best we've ever had and would've loved more or a complete side dish of those. Dessert was delicious - homemade pumpkin pie with a maple whipped cream, sooo good - and a creme fraiche ice cream with graham cracker crumble and butterscotch shell. On my way to Portland with my paramour to visit my son when I discovered this restaurant for the first time. 1. The physical space. Warm on the inside, perfect on a cold day. The outside seating is set in a garden with fountains and festive hanging lights, a real treat. A beautiful setting for an epic meal. 2. Staff Engaged, friendly, with just the perfect amount of attentiveness. 3. Cocktails The new norm, and I'm loving it, is a bevy of signature cocktails at restaurants. Peerless doesn't disappoint. Bar director Baylee Putnam is sorta spectacular in that department. I had edge of the desert. An aptly named drink evocative of the southern deserts. Thai chili infused reposado with agave, watermelon juice, and tajin. Wow 4. Menu Inventive, playful, and delicious. I wanted one of everything! The polenta cake with heirloom tomatoes, flank steak with chili infused crema, and the Red Buttes Farm mixed greens (with fried zucchini pickles, springtime greens, and cantaloupe). Superb! They are so fresh, taste so clean! Love the texture! The carrot ginger soup was light and lovely. The entrees were beautifully presented. The pork chops were so juicy and tender, very well balanced plate. The whisky marinated hanger steak melted like butter. The amount of the onions was overwhelming but the steak was cooked perfectly. Just absolutely wonderful! The food, the location, the service - all excellent! We were traveling with our pup and wanted to bring her with us, so we made a reservation for the patio. They sat us at a table that was big enough for 4 (so we had extra room) and secluded so our dog would be comfortable. Our waitress was attentive and accommodating; I loved when she suggested doing the halibut with a split plate order (pay a bit extra to get more of the sides on each plate so that it a bigger split portion) when my husband and I were debating if splitting would leave us each with enough food. The quality of the food was top notch. From the lobster loaded potato skins (delicious, good ratio of lobster to potato), to the halibut (perfectly cooked with creamy potatoes and crisp asparagus), to the desserts (the chocolate tart was rich and indulgent with a little kick from the tequila, and the banana split was a delightful mix of ice cream, banana and caramel that took us back to our childhood), everything was perfect. Big wine list too, and solid recommendations. We enjoyed the fruit forward pinot we ordered based on the waitresses description. We sat on the patio, it was heavenly. I got to watch the water feature and enjoy a perfect summer evening. We started with a half dozen oysters, kushi's from Washington and another kind which were fatter. We had the papaya melon salad - amazing! The melon was so fresh and juicy. Beverage wise I had the vodka drink because it was made with my favorite potato vodka and (my gentleman had) the watermelon Campari cocktail. For our main we had the special of the day which was a line caught salmon served on a bed of couscous and delicious vegetables with an apricot sauce which popped it. We also shared a glass of the house red which was a GSM. For dessert we 2 and they were phenomenal. At the end of our meal we walked through the garden. The food is really tasty and we LOVE their outdoor space. So spaced out and room for the kids to run around (and welcome for them to do so). Our server was a delight, so friendly with my kids and you could see every table enjoyed her. My problem with this place is the portions are SO small. I'm down to splurge on delicious food but we all left a little hungry. I'll start with the pluses, the location was pretty, the patio dog friendly and the staff were competent and friendly. However, as much as I hate to consider cost, it was very overpriced. Do not get me wrong, I don't mind paying for great food and I don't judge on portion size. Still, if I pay top dollar I want better than okay food no matter the ambiance. I'll forgive a lot if there is great food. Honestly, here the food was just okay. The salmon was ok, but as another reviewer wrote they could make their dish better at home. Worse, the lamb was to be served medium rare and arrived after medium well. It seems to exist as a special occasion restaurant for folks of a certain age and demographic. My husband did some research on a place in Ashland to eat, and found this restaurant to be highly recommended from the online reviews. Our dining experience started off rocky, and quite bluntly, never improved. We made dinner reservations for 7:45 on a Saturday evening. We arrived at 7:40, and were told by the host that greeted us that we had "about a 5 minute wait." He asked us to wait outside and we would be called when our table was ready. No sweat. 20 minutes later, my husband walks in to check on our table, with now a different hostess, and we were sat immediately. I was already annoyed upon being sat at a patio table in the outdoor courtyard, as we passed by SEVERAL empty tables. I could only assume at that point that the host completely forgot we were waiting. The hostess acknowledged that we were celebrating our anniversary and we very much appreciated the recognition. So we sat and waited for our server to greet us. In the meantime, the hostess grabbed us some waters. They were "out" of non-alcoholic beer. No worries, Coke it was. We ordered Kumamoto oysters as an appetizer, lamb for the husband, and a cheese burger for myself. Our server Juan came back a few minutes later informing us that they were "out of lamb." So he chose the New York strip instead. I should probably point out that the ambiance and atmosphere was very quiet, relaxing and pleasant to the eye. It felt like I was having tea on my large backyard patio, using my home patio furniture, next to my well manicured plants and bushes. The restrooms were clean, but very unimpressive. Maybe we expected the "fine dining experience" where there'd be some dude dressed in a suit and tie standing next to the sinks with a hand towel and breath mint. For how much they charged per plate, this is a service that the owner(s) should really look into. lol The oyster appetizer arrived to our table at 8:20. They came fully shucked, and tasted exactly how they should. Whilst waiting for our dinner plates, we used the time to observe the action surrounding us. A particular server, not our Juan, stood out to us. He was wearing a Hawaiian shirt (now that I think about it, they all were, and it felt very awkward) with the top unbuttoned and his chest hair sticking out. He also had a pair of sunglasses hanging off the back of his head. My husband and I had a conversation about how we were so glad he wasn't our server or we might find black curly chest hairs in our food. Lol. We walked into this establishment with the "fine dining" expectations, and were met with an ensemble that belonged on the beaches of Maui. Our server did a great job with the exception that he lacked personality; he was very dry. Our entrees arrived to the table at 8:45; exactly 1 hour past our reservation time. A golden rule of thumb for 5 star restaurants: courses should never be more than 20 minutes apart. This establishment failed miserably on timing. I understand that restaurants are short staffed and customers are asked to "cut them some slack," especially when some places are just now reopening. I will typically grant restaurants that "slack," unless I'm paying $50/head; then all that "slack" goes right out the window. My burger was both good and gross. Good in the sense that the quality of hamburger was phenomenal, and gross because my potato bun was so soggy with grease that it fell apart in my hands. My husbands steak was also good; great quality of meat cooked to perfection. But here in lies the problem: it wasn't exceptional. When you pay $54 for a steak, you expect that steak to be the best piece of meat to touch your lips in a long time. It wasn't. It's the chef's job to take a high quality slab of meat, cook and season it with a blend of well thought out ingredients, and serve it with the intentions of blowing the eaters mind. Customers shouldn't leave saying "meh, I've had better." And truth be told, we've had better. For less money too. I know that I have been very critical of this restaurant, and in some cases harsh, but I personally believe my strong critique is warranted. As the daughter of a chef and the wife of a culinary expert, I have high expectations of establishments that charge San Jose prices in a small southern Oregon town. To wrap up this review, I honestly don't recommend this establishment. At least not now. Maybe once they get back on track. But as it stands today, we most likely won't be back. read more

Awful service overall. Sat at the bar until the table was ready and the bartender could care less. We were the only 2 at the bar. But I was apparently interrupting her making drinks for the other patrons. Table service was horrible. Waiter didn't check on us at all. Had to flag down 2 others at separate times to get salt & pepper and refill water glasses. After 20 minutes, the waiter brought the lemon slice for my salad- after I saw him pass us and flagged him down. Dinner was not spectacular which you kinda would expect for the price. My salmon was good, but the flat iron steak was SALTY! A mouthful of the Atlantic Ocean at its best. Do not recommend- there are other really great restaurants in Ashland! read more

My boyfriend and I came to Peerless for dinner while we were staying in Medford for the weekend. My boyfriend had a burger with fries and I had the French onion soup. We shared the shrimp skewers and the cheesecake for dessert. The shrimp skewers were such a great flavor! My boyfriend really enjoyed his burger and we both loved the fries. I liked the soup, but it wasn't the best I've had. But the cheesecake...Absolutely amazing! We couldn't stop talking about it. I hope they never take it off the menu so we can come back and get it! The vibe of the place was cute but our server made us feel a bit rushed and there was a weird/strong smell coming from the fireplace in the dining room. read more

And $13 for lettuce leaves, flowers and basil? Way too many flavors trying to compete. The salmon wasn't cooked enough. And again, too many flavors. And again. Super Salty. There is a very good reason this restaurant is called Peerless! This is one of our favorites and we eat here as often as we can. The service is so good. Talking about the food is always fun, but it changes so often it's almost pointless because whatever I had this week I won't have next week. Oh wow. We loved this place! We were staying next door at the peerless hotel and wanted a place to walk to... so we did! It would have been lovely to sit outside, we could tell, but it was a little too cold. The interior is beautiful with nice furniture, the service was wonderful and prompt and the food was ridic. We loved it. Had the oysters, the kale salad, the cauliflower and the blackened sweet potteries, with some insanely good chocolate pudding ish stuff for dessert. They do the work. 2 of us shared 3 drinks that were completely original and then the bartender made a drink up at our request. It hit the spot! We had a crab-avocado salad that was very well balanced, including a healthy portion of greens. We had FRIED WATERMELLON! It was an amazing mix of sweet and savory with a corn counterbalance. We had flank steak that was soft and very flavorful. It came with grilled squash that was just as good! We also had excellent almond cake for desert. AND the wait staff were all so warm and friendly! Sometimes it can be hard finding a nice place without spending a small fortune, so I was pleasantly surprised by our dinner at Peerless. The majority of options on the dinner menu are small plates ranging in price from $5 - 15, so you can try a little of this and a little of that without committing to one expensive entree. They recommend 1-1/2 plates per person and that was perfect for our table. Our choices were the butternut squash gnocchi, baby back pork ribs, tandoori chicken, seafood cakes and the chef's whim vegetables. I was really happy with most of the dishes, but wouldn't order the ribs again. Beautiful dining space and we enjoyed sitting by the fireplace. Attentive service and throw in some glasses of prosecco for a festive way to start our evening. read more

Terrific. I don't normally use superlatives, but this place is great. Fascinating menu (BeefCheeks?!) very good wine list, and superb service. The owner/mgr stopped by twice, sincerely interested in our opinion. A wide price range Burke went high end. The mussels were served in a superb broth with well- seasoned pointers. The beef cheeks were moist, tender, and reminiscent of Ireland's best corn beef. No stone was left unturned with regard to service. Fireplace, small well- stocked bar, and a number of specialties. Rather remarkable place to eat. We sat outside on a lovely shaded patio that has a fountain. The food is wonderful and there are lots of creative options to choose from. The wait staff is very knowledgeable, although a bit stiff and formal. There is a $1.50 fee for a taste of any wine, and that's something I have never heard of before...I think a good restaurant or wine bar should freely offer a taste of any bottle that is open. We had the cheese plate special which featured some remarkable Oregon cheeses, as well as an Italian and Spanish cheese. We also ordered the Lamb Meatballs which were delicious, and the Chicken Tagine (which was not presented in a Tagine). In a town with lots of excellent restaurants, the Peerless stands out as one of the best. read more

My partner and I have been coming to Ashland, Oregon for many years and always regarded dinner at Peerless as a highlight of our visit. We've had many wonderful experiences there. Peerless has always managed to find the sweet spot between casual elegance and laid back. But not tonight. Peerless tonight seemed quite ordinary, kind of like Marie Calendar's but without an all-you-can-eat salad bar and three times as expensive. Our experience left us feeling totally disappointed and let down. While we both thought our food was okay (just okay, not memorable), the service was decidedly mediocre. Our server was perfunctory and polite, but not at all friendly. She took our drink orders first (we each ordered a cocktail) and came back a short while later to take our food orders. We waited and waited for our drinks to arrive. Thirty minutes later, after we'd finished our appetizers, we still didn't have our cocktails. At that point, I asked the server to cancel our drink orders and allow us order wine instead. Our server expressed not a hint of surprise or apology for not bringing our drinks, and she acted put out that when I asked to change our beverage order. Soon thereafter, our wine arrived, followed by our main courses. Everything was fine until our server handed us the bill. Turned out she charged us for the non-existent cocktails after all. When I started questioning the bill, she quickly interjected, "Okay, I'll remove the cocktail charges." Again, no apology for messing up our order and no apology for trying to bill us for drinks we never got. Peerless was outrageously expensive, and their menu was quite limited. I may give Peerless one more chance, because even the best restaurants can have an off night once in a while. But tonight's experience certainly changed my impression of the place. read more

From the moment you wait outside and meet their staff, to the impeccable service you receive from EVERY server in the house. Specialty cocktails, (made by true mixologists), incredible starters that are fresh; I had the oysters, fresh and sweet tasting of ocean. Incredible wine selection, sparkling water on the table, beautifully lit by candles in an outdoor setting reminiscent of the book, "The Secret Garden". This place is where you take your special loved ones for celebrations as it can be quite spendy but sooooo worth it! What an experience this place is, every time. read more

Hands down the best food in Ashland. When you're looking for a special night, with thoughtful food, service and ambience, this is the place. Feel free to disregard this review if you want to know about the food, because I never got near any and cannot speak to that topic. My experience, and this review, regards the dismissive and rude hostess who insisted we wear masks even though our reservation was for outside where masks are not required, and who then provided those masks but slid both of them to me atop her podium while also making copious hand contact on them so that both sides were contaminated by surface and skin contact which rendered them unwearable, and who then told us to go out and wait on the street even though we had a reservation for which we had promptly arrived. After such treatment, we decided to find somewhere else to eat. For the amount of money I was prepared to spend at this restaurant, I expect to be treated like a valued guest. That was not my experience. I was taken aback by this experience and I am not someone who is easily shocked. I hope you fare better if you decide to brave the arrogance and disrespect you might well attract if you decide to visit Peerless. read more
