Somehow I've kind of just skipped over Peet's Coffee in my travels. I see a Starbucks, I go to the Starbucks. But recently I tried Peet's and, I don't know!, this might be my new airport caffeine go-to (... at least when I'm specifically in Terminal 4 of JFK)! I visited several times in the past year, and: 1. the line always moves pretty quickly 2. the staff have been friendly enough 3. the drinks are consistent My go-to order is the Iced Horchata Cold Brew Oat Latte*; it's the ideal afternoon (early morning, late evening... we're on airport time here, and airport time isn't real) treat. And - happy surprise - it's vegan as is! Despite my best efforts to mix the espresso, the horchata mixture (which I think is Madagascar vanilla syrup and cinnamon spices), and the oat milk, it really ends up becoming this layered drink of sweetness first, creaminess second, and bitterness last. I don't mind and it's kind of nice to have a drink I don't have to customize because it's TOO sugary or TOO milky (... looking at you Starbucks). Price as of writing this (after tax): $7.50 for a large. Place your order on the left hand side of the small counter, they'll pass it off to you on the right hand side where there's napkins and straws. *I'm not sure this is available year round. read more

The Mocha Frappuccino blended was not too sweet. This is usually a wonderful thing (I like it to be less sweet) but I give it fewer stars bc of inconsistency. It should be sweeter and more flavorful. Let's also consider that the ham and swiss non-breakfast panini costs $9, vs. the ham, egg, and swiss breakfast panini (which, again, let me remind you, was not available) which -would- have been $8 had it actually been offered. Peet's is certainly no Starbucks, nor does it want to be. Instead it is a 24 hour spot that seems to be the only thing kicking at all hours in JFK's one true International Terminal. I have scored many a latte here for my late nights in traveldom - they do the job, but not enough to ever really crave them. As a non-coffee / non-caffeine seeker, it feels painful to part with $5 for a hot drink that isn't even that great. But like all things in JFK, beggers can't be choosers. Hence, in the morning and peak travel hours, there are lines. If you're here for anything but coffee, you're in the wrong airport coffee stand. Food or any thing resembling something remotely edible is abysmal. Pananis, muffins, etc are marked up, bland, and a waste of carby space. Even the staff, as unethusiastic as really are, is unlikely to make any recommendations in hopes the day will end soon. Lastly, if you're among the unfortunate who is here for a long layover or simply stranded at the airport, Terminal 4 is the one place where many travelers come to sleep. The middle area couches / chairs (no wifi, not enough group seats, etc.) turns into the the makeshift motel for JFK. Travelers after 11pm are passed out and folks will occupy whatever seat, cushion, space they can and by 2am it looks almost like a morgue with suitcases. But, at least there is something to drink. Horrendous customer service. There was one person ahead of me in line when I arrived. He had just finished ordering an iced latte. There was only one person working so he went to make the latte. Halfway through the barista asked hot or iced. The customer confirmed iced. Once that was all done, the barista asked what I wanted. I asked if they had oat milk. "Haha, no." I asked what non-dairy options they did have. He rolled his eyes and said, "Almond or soy." I asked for an almond milk golden matcha latte. It was heavily advertised at that location but I again got a, "Haha, no." They were apparently out. "Ok, I will have an almond milk latte please." I then went to check in on the app. As one does at Peet's in my experience... Another eye roll and I was told I couldn't use credits. I explained I just wanted to check in. He rolled his eyes (again) and moved the scanner. I scanned my code. It beeped but wasn't clear if it had scanned. I tried again. Same thing. He started waving at the credit card reader asking me to hurry up and pay. I said I would like to please confirm my check in before scanning my card. He rolled his eyes and sighed. I asked nicely if the check in had scanned. He threw up his hands and said, "I don't know please just pay." I implored, "Sir, you have told me no at every turn. I'm tying to be nice and just asking for a basic level of customer service. Please stop rolling your eyes at me and try to help me. That's all I'm asking for." He scoffed and said, "You're the customer and you're right and I just need you to pay," while rolling his eyes again. I paid my $6.58 for a weak, poorly made latte and suggested he not scoff or roll his eyes at customers, especially if they had been told no to all they wanted to order after waiting a bit to order. So here's what I'm thinking...it's coffee at an airport served by a disinterested person who avoids eye contact of any kind and wants to make sure orders are taken as slllooooowwwlllyyy as possible, because it's not like, you know, anyone has a flight to catch. So coffee, a bottle of water and a banana is about $84 USD because you're at an airport. Okay it was actually about 9 or 10 but still, it's very overpriced. Worthy of zero stars. I ordered a double macchiato. You know. Two shots and a little foam. I was handed a large cup full of steamed milk and two shots. I asked the lady, politely what this was, to which she said it was a macchiato. I said no and described what it was. She got really defensive and told me I was wrong and started to ring me up. $5.45! A macchiato is $2.60. I told her I didn't want that drink and I wasn't paying that much. She got really angry and got the managers, whom I might add, handled this wonderfully. I bought a tiny pastry here after getting off a flight. I thought the cashier had made a mistake when she told me it was $4.50. She hadn't. This pastry was like 4 or 5 bites...so that comes out to paying about $1/bite, for an average-tasting pastry. More problematic: nothing in the bake case was labeled with a price, so you couldn't find out what the prices were until after you'd taken something and were already at the register. I got a hot coffee with cold soy and asked if I could please have an iced coffee. The response "you made me put the soy in it and now you change your mind" in a rude RUDE tone. I'm a New Yorker - so rude mean Very Rude. I paid for the coffee while sharing my disappoint politely again with the barista making eye contact, in attempt to Bully me.
