An unexpected evening at Pelican's, but WOW, the service and care was impeccable, above and beyond. We go to Pelican's West once a month. It's a pleasure to know that cravings with consistency will be met. Tonight we, my love and I, shared the charred rib eye with the added sides (love that they offer this). One of the steaks was cooked to medium-well despite us ordering medium-rare. The other was inconsistent, but 2/3 medium rare. We noted the issue. Assuming that one new steak would be corrected, we were instead flabbergasted when two entirely new plates were presented. Ironically, we were sitting at the bar, so, upon presentation of the new plates we looked like absolute gluttons! My love talked to the manager, Robert, to assure that he knew we only had one issue with one steak, and never before had any issue at all, and that we certainly did not seek entirely new meals both of which were cooked to perfection. The manager said, "That's what we do". The service at this location is always thoughtful: the right amount of attention and concern. We also love that they have many young people working there that are clearly receiving excellent guidance and experience. As a teacher, I love witnessing young people being encouraged and learning by mentors that care. It may be that we had one issue with one steak, but the attention, food, and environment makes Pelican's West a continued staple worthy of 5 stars. See you next month! read more

My wife and I can't stop eating the prime rib. The fresh bread and garlic is a treat. The house salad is ginormous. Service is tops. For Albuquerque, it doesn't get much better for service, food, and price. This is where I will would take my out of town guests. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE Pelican's West. We love the atmosphere, the people, the staff, and especially the food and beverages. Whenever we have a special occasion we all pick Pelicans. It has been our place since we moved here and we found it about 15 years ago. The staff is so friendly and on top of things. We never have to flag anyone down for help. When you go, not if you go, try the Coconut Shrimp, King crab legs, the lemon caper fish, and if you are having a birthday they give you this delicious piece of cake that is to die for. We were celebrating our friend's birthday. The evening was so nice. The restaurant was busy, but our server managed to do an excellent job. Our drinks came promptly and he kept our water filled. We ordered the King Crab legs. They were delicious!! We asked for extra napkins, got them plus a nice warm, damp one for the finishing touches. Hubby and I dined here for the first time for our anniversary last night, and we will be back! Our server, Alec, took great care of us. Cocktails were delicious and refreshing. The salad was fresh and flavorful. Crab cakes were some of the best we've had in ABQ -- not overly salty or seasoned, and cooked perfectly. Four of us went to Pelican's West for a birthday dinner. The food was excellent, prime rib, catfish and bacon wrapped scallops with steak. The preparation was delicious and the prices fair. The meal is served with soup or salad and an accompaniment. Our server was efficient and friendly, he was attentive and friendly. The remodeled restaurant is very comfortable. Ordered Halibut and was given trout. When I questioned the waiter she said she would mention this to the manager. What was given to me was a battered piece of white fish with almonds thrown on top. I have ordered the almond crusted halibut plenty of times to know that's not what it looks like or tastes like. I have also ordered the fish and chips and it was near identical to that. I mentioned this to the manager and though he was apologetic, it was like eh whatever. I was excited to come back after the remodel but now I won't be as enthused to return. I will add Tori was an excellent server-attentive, kind and helpful. I hope management reads these reviews on yelp because they are doing a raffle for a gift card for people to leave positive experiences on their website. Pelicans is probably our most go to restaurant. They are consistently good and locally owned. The management is great at both properties. They have been gracious to our group meetings, that we hold regularly and have even opened for us when they are not open. We have several favorites, the chargrilled steak, shrimp pelican, the salmon, and the fish and chips. We hold many family gatherings here for birthdays and special occasions. The Christmas gifts certificates are terrific and make most of the presents for my family. For every $100.00 you spend you get a $25 certificate. Since we all eat there often, it makes the perfect gift. The west side was closed for quite a while as they recovered from a fire, but they are back in full swing. Actually, meeting a group of about 15 women tomorrow night for a Christmas party/dinner on the west side, looking forward to it! Kudos Pelicans! read more

We frequent Pelican's when my husband wants prime rib. The prime rib is always good and we love the fresh salad and the roasted garlic and bread. We had dinner here earlier this week, the food and service were great, but the dessert was disappointing. It was my husband's birthday so we ordered a piece a key lime pie to go. I couldn't believe they charged $7.95 for this piece of flat pie. The presentation was not appealing. If we had seen it before we ordered it, we would have skipped on the pie. We love this place! We frequent Fridays here and especially during lent. We sit up at the bar and just enjoy the atmosphere and all the friendly faces! The food is terrific! The service is A+! The bottomless salad with the house dressing is a great start along with the fresh baked bread and the roasted garlic in olive oil. That is a meal in itself. We order the king crab legs and share along with a prepared to your request steak. The bar menu has a few favorites like the fried mushrooms and the shrimp dinner. I went to a family dinner this Sunday and it was very good. I walk in and get seated very quickly. The staff and our waiter were all very helpful and nice to my family and I. We ordered the calamari and mozzarella sticks which were superb. Very flavorful and was fresh. I ended up ordering the shrimp scampi which was decent. Definitely good overall but nothing amazing, it was a little bit on the smaller side but I was still somewhat satisfied afterwards. I don't consider myself a food snob, but when the food prices are higher than normal, I expect the food quality and service to be top notch, which it wasn't. The scallops were disappointing and the bacon that was wrapped around them tasted weird and actually detracted from the scallop flavor. The service was disappointing, not at all what you would expect from a higher end seafood restaurant. The steak was okay. Nothing to rave about. There was a band playing in the patio, very loudly, but there were no speakers point inside, so all we could hear was the bass. If it's going to be that loud, might as well turn some speakers towards the inside so we can get the full music experience. read more

Maybe it was just a rough night in the kitchen but our peel and eat shrimp hadn't been split or cleaned so we spent more time cleaning than eating. We are here at least once a month and the consistent thing at the bar seems to be understaffed and overworked. The asparagus wasn't trimmed well either. The garlic and bread...always a success. But I won't be ordering the shrimp again anytime soon. Update: Bartender told us they don't devein or clean the peel & eat shrimp. We'd have to order the shrimp cocktail for those perks. read more

After dining at the original east side location, this was a minor disappointment. The bread was so hard I almost couldn't cut it with the serrated knife. The hard butter was from the freezer, although I saw soft butter at the prep station. The cup of green chile stew was tiny compared to the other location. The carrots & broccoli were delicious, however the pea pods were empty. The shrimp and filet were on the smaller size, but delicious. Best blackened fish in Albuquerque, nice to see that is consistent at both locations. When I was almost done, the server came to check on me and said she hadn't been back because she didn't know the food was already delivered. All I wanted for thanksgiving dinner was prime rib and some chocolate mousse cake. I ordered to go early the evening before and got the small cut when I ordered the larger one, and never got the ridiculously-priced slice of cake that I paid for at all! That's what I get for tipping for carryout I guess. They weren't busy, it wasn't the holiday yet, they just didn't care. I'm not rich. I saved for months so I could splurge for this dinner. It's a big deal for me to pay an extra $15+ for something I never got. I just hope she needed the money more than I did. Shrimp cocktail was spicy and good, very big shrimp... but only 4 of them. Southern fried catfish was mediocre. The bottomless salad was quality, and the vegetables were fresh and that was the best thing they had was the salad. Having passed this many times driving down Coors Blvd and since our 1st choice for dinner had over an hour wait today was the day we decided to try it. Not overly busy so we were seated quickly. After a few minutes our server came to take our drink order returning with drinks and warm bread. We followed up with an appetizer then ordered our meals. The escargot was cooked in mushroom caps, and bland. Plus we got 5, not 4 or 6, odd numbers are difficult to divide between 2. We had the charred rib eye with fries and a pasta dish. The pasta was good, the rib eye was tasty, not overly seasoned. But it had way too much fat. Some trimming would have made it much better. Our server came by infrequently, so I stayed thirsty. One thing I noticed was servers from other tables wore blinders - if it wasn't their table you were ignored. They didn't look in your direction, lest they make eye contact and you want something. Not very customer service oriented. Of course we fared better than the table behind us. They couldn't get the food order correct. At one point these people were served a burnt (yes, I said burnt) artichoke. Who does that? I'd have been headed for the door. The server shouldn't have accepted it from the kitchen and had another made. Needless to say not impressed. I did like the decor and salt water aquarium it set this place apart from others. Anyway this one is off the list. Considering the amount of the check, a very expensive lesson. We won't be back!!! read more

My friend & I decided to have an early dinner after a movie matinee. We were waited on by a young man with blue hair. He took our order & basically ignored us from then on. I thought he must be new & untrained. He didn't seem to have a clue. But as soon as a party of 7 was seated next to us, he jumped into action like Jekyl & Hyde. He gave them bread; we didn't get any. He cleared their empty plates; he ignored ours. In fact he worked very hard not to look in our direction. When we needed more creamers for our coffee, he came over with a handful & dumped them on the table!. This post poor service ruined our dinner, although our food was quite good. Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night with my father. We ordered calamari as an appetizer, which was unavailable for some reason. Instead we ordered the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail which was more like watered down salsa with shrimp and a huge side of chips. The complimentary bread was served with roasted garlic and butter which was more enjoyable than our appetizer. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was good- fresh and light. My dad's rib-eye was cooked to perfection, he really enjoyed it. All in all, my experience was mediocre. I probably will be back to try the Yelp recommended Bacon-wrapped Scallops! Worst restaurant in Albuquerque! Management acts like trailer trash. We didn't get any of the food we ordered, no one fixed the problems. When I told the manager our issues with dinner, she told me to stop cussing at her staff. (I hadn't spoken to her staff?) then they charged for food we didn't even receive. Now that we've been to both Pelican's, I'd say they are our go-to for great steaks with the friendliest service. I had a more picturesque depiction of my first time at Pelican's (http://bit.ly/1NiD3gM) and the same pretty much goes for this location off Coors. Wait is minimal as there are plenty of seats for all kinds of occasions. I really enjoy their New York Strip and Clam Chowder. Their fries are crispy and the service is really what's made every experience at Pelican's so awesome, even 5-star worthy. I don't think I'd stray too far from the New York strip myself, but my boyfriend loves the Prime Rib. Plenty good choices all around, I just wish I had room for dessert! read more

I probably would not have ended up at Pelican's but for the gift card someone gave me last Christmas. It's tucked away off of Coors and I've honestly never heard anything great about it. Surprisingly, I was not disappointed. Unlike the myriad chain restaurants nearby, there was not wait and we got seated on the patio as requested, which by the way was adorable. I would return to sit on this patio again...perhaps to try out the happy hour! I had the cheapest glass of wine on the menu (pinot noir) and it was actually good! They also had a few local beers on tap! We had crab cakes to start, and they were pretty standard....tasty, that is, served with what tasted like a chipotle tartar sauce - yum! I had the clam chowder - it was good because it wasn't too thick and had lots of clam in it! The hubby had the shrimp linguine, which was yummy, especially because it had nice plump medium sized shrimp (as opposed to tiny shrimp). The only dish I wasn't impressed with was the salad - It was an endless salad, but I didn't have more than one plate because iceberg lettuce doesn't suit my fancy. Service was good. Our waiter brought out everything at the right time and was on top of our drink orders! The only real criticism I have of the overall experience was that it was good, not great. Service was great and my husbands filet was very good, cooked well and tender. I ordered the shrimp and was a little disappointed as they were a little greasy. We had the mushrooms for an appetizer and they were amazing. Love the roasted garlic! We have eaten here many times in the past and had the fried catfish, it was fabulous.
