When I first moved to this area of Nashville and discovered there was a Penn Station close, I was super pumped! This location, which sits in the Kroger shopping plaza at the Old Hickory and Highway 70 intersection hits the mark for the sub and fries, but misses it relating to cleanliness, condition and service. My go to at any Penn Station is the Pizza Sub, which is a hot sub with pepperoni, smoked ham, provolone, parmesan, oregano and of course, pizza sauce. You can add mushrooms and onions if you want...and of course I make sure to add them both! I always side the sub with fries. Their fries are fresh cut and dropped to order, so always a no brainer! This particular location has some issues with upkeep and service. There are always plenty of folks in the kitchen, easily four each time I have visited, and not one of them seems helpful for the most part. The lobby is usually in some sort of disarray with trash on the floors and tables, along with full trash cans. Just an unappealing spots to grab food in, or at least eat in. The food itself is always top notch, so I have to give props where due. Prices have increased a bit recently with some sandwiches pushing $13 for regular and a medium/regular fry being over $4. I go back and forth on if it's worth it, and to date...it still is, but it is a special treat spot for at this point! read more

Got to give it to em, I had an order of six large sandwiches, each with their own list of customizations, and they took the challenge with a smile. The sandwiches came out quickly and all six were exactly as ordered, and delicious. The peanut oil fries were piping hot and delicious. Sub...Hoagie...Po'Boy...Torpedo...Grinder - no matter what you call it, there is an essential quality about these style sandwiches no matter who makes them or where you purchase them. They come on some sort of French bread (or Italian, depending on your neighborhood.) Today's PSECS subs came on a crispy-crust, French baguette: crunchy on the exterior, and soft/chewy on the interior. Fillings are up to the customer who can choose from a list of hot, cold, wrap, or salad preparations listed on the wall and on the on-line menu. We opted for two simple, straightforward subs we order almost anytime we are trying out a new venue or chain. Unfortunately, what we received did not resemble the subs pictured on their advertising. Of course, frequently that is the case and accompanied by the disclaimer, "serving suggestion." The fillings were sparse...really sparse; but they were fresh and flavorful. Nonetheless, it was disappointing to get nearly twice as much bread as filling. (Compare/contrast my photos with the menu photos the company provides.) Fries were mixed in terms of quality: Cut Fresh, yes; Fried Nicely, yes...BUT other than the few 2" ones pictured on the photo I took and posted, they were little 1-inch pieces and smaller, hardly big enough to pinch between your fingers when trying to extract them from the cup-container. Flavor was good...at least from what we could tell with these nibbles. The employees were friendly and courteous. The interior of the building, located in the corer of a strip mall, was dim and dingy (but appeared clean). It's unlikely that we will return to this place again. But, as with nearly all my reviews, I urge you to check it out for yourself. Just ask them to be sure to stuff your sammie with a value congruent with what you order and how much you pay. read more

Barely two stars because the food was average but service was a clown show. Ordered on GrubHub. Went to pick it up and the store was empty. Shaggy from Scooby Doo came out of the office and was instantly confused because he didn't see my order on his computer, even after sweeping the unwashed hair out of his eyes. I showed him the order on my phone and he then stumbled back to the prep line and found the order. He handed it to me without fries (which were ordered) so I corrected him with the expected response. Luckily I could see him put the fries in the bag without sabotaging them. The manager then came out from the office but didn't acknowledge me even though there was literally no business in the store except my order. Retail fast food is a nightmare these days and I'll stick with Chik Fil A from now on, the one chain that gets customer service. Penn Station is a joke. read more

I've always enjoyed their subs here! I used to work nearby and loved coming here for lunches and sometimes dinners. Their sandwiches are always delicious. I'd say if you are on a tight budget you can skip their fries and drinks or combo, because they charge a lot for them and a cookie doesn't worth what you pay for the combo. You can buy sandwiches here and get soda or drinks at Kroger next door, if you are looking to save some major cash. The service is always quick and friendly. The ambiance was ok but it's definitely not a date night or fancy type of place. Overall, I like them better than subway! read more

First time I've been to a restaurant in this chain, and I'm from Philly, so I KNOW. lol Really enjoyed the turkey and provolone HOAGIE I got today. The very first thing I noticed was how tasty the bread was. No bread anywhere ever has any flavor when you get a sub. This place was different. Sort of like a baguette, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and great flavor. WOW! I just dropped $20 on a Sub, Chips, Drink and Cookie. The most disappointing part was the sub was THIN and Small and didn't have much in it. Not to mention, the sandwich I picked has no meat, so really it is Artichokes and Cheese. It was mostly bread. When I go to Penn Station in Dickson- I always take half of it home because it is so filling. That tells you the difference, I left hungry. I won't be back to this location again. The customer service was not great. There were two teen boys working who were not professional and the one taking orders did not speak up. My sandwich was good, a regular BLT, but it was the only options that I saw and knew I would like. The fries were the best part but they honestly tasted like Wendy's fries. Ok. Let's do this. My initial disclaimer is that I'm from southern NJ (Atlantic City) and lived in Philadelphia for a number of years so I've had my fair share of steak sandwiches. These are pretty good. First the bread is correct. It's got the right texture and soaks up the goodness from the fillings quite well. It holds up til the last bite so well done on sourcing it. The meat portions are a little underwhelming. I was a bit disappointed about this. The peppers and mushrooms were well seasoned and the flavor was good. I'd have the hot peppers available as a side to go along with this to make it even more authentic Fries were spot on boardwalk style. Overall I'd never turn one of these sandwiches down. As I was walking in, I noticed a dog tied and muzzled outside with no water. I overheard a concerned woman that took action. I asked this woman if she spoke with the owner and she said yes. The dog owner is in this restaurant eating. After the police were called and citations issued I left. I will never go to that restaurant ever again. The owner can eat it! read more

I was so excited to find a Penn Station on my regular driving route to places north and east from Memphis. But unfortunately, the service attitude is terrible. I tried three times in the past two months and it has always been the same. It's like I'm an inconvenience to them that I have shown up. The first time, I asked for napkins, and the person behind the counter told me gruffly that she had placed them in the bag. When I said I didn't see them she stormed off telling some other guy to give me a napkin.... to be sure, she had given me one napkin crumpled up at the bottom of the bag under the fries. This became commonplace as they did that with the one napkin everytime I went. Speaking of the fries, they are pretty tight with how many you get, generally not filling the small cup with the fries. I will say the food is always great at Penn Station as a franchise. I used to frequent at least one Penn Staion branch a week when I lived in Cincinnati. But this one I will not visit again. I have yet to see anyone in the place smile. They don't even tell you they will be with you when you are waiting to order. And it's not like they are busy with customers when I have been there. My husband said he'd had a good sandwich here and since it's right by our not humble abode, we meandered over. OH! Is that freshly baked bread from my great grandmother Wilda? No. It isn't. In fact, when asked, I was told it was shipped in frozen. Fooled me! In any case, wow, that bread is good! I had the chicken parm 6" with no onions or mushrooms, and it was tayyyy-ayyy-sty! My husband and i grabbed subs to go in between soccer games. It was very difficult to find, as my map app wanted me to go west of the interstate. I see that it STILL is inaccurately pinpointing penn station's location. My kids gave up and ordered subs from subway, but in the nick of time I spied penn station and my husband and I were able to order from there. I had a terrible experience at this location. I placed an order using GrubHub, and was notified that my order was ready. I approached the counter and asked individual about my order, and this is where things headed south. My order was clearly not ready yet, and the Cook took it upon himself to step in. Somehow, from over 20 feet away, he asserted I was upset which I wasn't. The manager of the store, who overheard the entire interaction, decided to accuse me of not being a customer. Upon showing her my order on my phone, she simply shook her head. I continued to be verbally berated by three members of the staff for the duration of my wait. All of this because I simply asked about my order being ready when I was notified that it was. It was so trashy to be honest. How does someone like that own a business? I went to Penn station after reading the positive reviews here on Yelp but was very disappointed. I had the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich and regular fries. I asked for onions, pepper and mushrooms in my sandwich. I was disappointed to see that instead of fresh green peppers, they grilled the meat with pickled banana peppers, which ruined the sandwich. The fries were probably done about 2 hours prior to my arrivals and were cold and dry. Very poor experience. I will probably not go back. read more

Visited for lunch on a Friday. Very disappointed. I have had previous good experiences. When we arrived we were third in line. The gentleman took the order for the first two before us and then went to take on other tasks and stopped to talk to the cook for a bit before taking our order. We were lucky, next group of 6 confused them with a coupon and ended up leaving. After that we observed several construction people come in for lunch and two left because they were not acknowledged. Ate lunch here on Saturday with my son. I ordered the October special (cheese steak, fries, drink) and my son ordered a club with nothing but meat and cheese. After sitting for quite a while, the gentleman manning the grill brought the cheese steak. Waited a while longer, went back up to ask about the club and fries. The girl wanted to argue that the club didn't come with fries so I had to go dig up the receipt to prove that I had ordered some. They then put the fries on my son's plate, which proved useful since his sandwich came slathered with mustard and mayo. I looked at the long line of people waiting/complaining and realized that we didn't have time to wait for another sandwich. This location is sandwiched in a strip mall. It's got excellent dubs (that come in 4 different sizes). They're all totally customizable and made with excellent quality ingredients; you can taste the difference. We received excellent service. They didn't just take our order and give our food, but walked around a couple times to see if our food was okay and if they could take anything away...which is pretty nice considering you bus your own table. They have fresh cut, "home made" fries and lemonade. However, if you pass on their cookies, that's where your biggest fail might lie! They have huge chunks of chocolate and are soft and gooey. I had the unfortunate circumstance today walking by this restaurant and seeing a poor dog tied up outside in the heat. With NO WATER and a leash lead (one that ties the dogs mouth shut). So this poor dog wasn't even able to pant. IN THE HEAT WITH NO WATER!!!!!! I walked inside and asked an employee if they knew who that dog belonged to. I did this after UPS. The next door stated they didn't know but saw someone tie the dog up and go inside Penn Station. So after asking the Penn Station employee. She said yes, they're eating at one of the tables, but she refused to say who it was. She also refused to say why no one in the establishment bothered taking water outside after seeing this. I made a call to the police. I will never ever eat in an establishment that condoness animal neglect/cruelty. Penn Station may be a franchise chain, but (this location at least) feels like a neighborhood deli, perhaps more in the manner of its homebase Dayton, Ohio than Penn Station, NYC. I've never been to a sandwich shop in "Penn Station" but there definitely is more of a "stop looking at me", "hurry up and order" shouting-in-the-kitchen "Yankee" feel to it -- much more than Jersey Mike's, which pales in comparison on both counts of quality and price. It's kind of an appropriate analogy with New York vs. New Jersey. Penn Station's crown jewel is its homemade, handcut french fries and similarly hand-squeezed lemonade: a heavenly duet to satisfy any snacktime craving. For a bigger appetite, the cheesesteaks are great (and the official cheesesteak of the Cincinnati Reds), as is pretty much any sandwich I've had there. Still hungry? Finish up with a fresh-baked chocolate chunk cookie! They offer quality meats and cheeses that they slice in-store (not bring out pre-sliced from a package), deliciously chewy bread (that's baked in-store, not warmed in-store) and fresh produce for toppings (that aren't brought out of the back in a plastic bag.) They also have a lemon press that they use for fresh squeezed lemonade they'll make right in front of you. For a franchise, I love this place. They offer a rockin' teriyaki vegetarian sub that I absolutely love! My husband always raves over the meat and I totally take his word for it :) read more
